Grab & Go Keto Meals and More

November 16, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Scratch Food has been undergoing a massive overhaul to prepare for the launch of PangeaKeto Dayton– a grab and go KETO retail store and bakery, located behind The Paragon Supper Club in Washington Township. Opening day is Tues, Nov 17th!

On the day I was there, Chef Marshall Bartley was making fresh-baked Pumpkin Donuts- that have just 1 NET CARB! This is just one of the proprietary items they will offer. Their  autumn line included, fresh-baked chocolate donuts, donut holes, and Cupcakes with Pumpkin Spiced Cream Cheese Frosting. Chef said the best thing he’s created is their KETO waffle. Owner Matt Hayden pipes in and says it’s their KETO chocolate.

For those not familiar with the ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. Ketogenic diets can cause significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand all the science involved, there will be plenty of folks at the store that can explain it to you.

PangeaKeto has been developing and producing some of the best sugar-free, low/no carb meals, snacks, baked goods, and sweets available on the market! You can pick up breads, sauces, snacks and so much more.  They even make their very own pork rinds, fulfilling that craving for crunch that so many on keto diets crave. Try their soups, the cheesy cauliflower, broccoli cheddar crab caught my interest.

Choose from 15 Keto  pre-made meals that include:

Smoked chicken gouda
Meatball w/ zoodles & tomato alfredo
Italian Sausage Risotto
Bbq bacon cheddar chicken
Pasta-free lasagna
Chicken codon bleu
Sausage zucchini bake
Seasoned chicken wings
Southwestern Pork
Cheesey chicken & broccoli
Mu Shu Pork
Coconut braised chicken thighs
Enchilada beef bowl
Mushroom Swiss Burger

They also have about 20 other meals for other dietary needs.

Meals are $10.99, come frozen and can be cooked in the microwave in minutes. You can also order these meals online.

PangeaKeto even has makes its very own chocolate bars, plain and with crunch.

Visit this Saturday and you’ll be able to sample their 9″ pizza’s, made right in the shop to order. Choose from a red sauce, alfredo or walnut pesto and add you favorite toppings.  While it’s cooking you can stock up on groceries for the week.

New Asian Restaurant Opens Near Dayton Mall

November 16, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

It may have been a long time coming- as there have been coming soon signs in the windows of this former Qdoba spot since last winter.  But then again no one predicted  we’d have a pandemic either. Finally opening it’s doors just last week, Fu Mon Lau is now serving lunch and dinner seven days a week in a very modern feeling dining room on St Rt. 725 in  South Town Centre,  just east of the Dayton Mall.  They specialize in Cantonese style Chinese cuisine with a wide selection of seafood.

The name Fu Mon Lau in Chinese means a house full of happiness and my lunch today sure made me happy.  The lunch special of szechuan beef came with a choice of white, brown or fried rice and soup (egg drop, wonton or hot and sour) for just $8.95.  Lunch specials are available from 11am – 3:30pm.

Your $25 ticket includes 2 drink tickets and a lavish spread of hors d’oeuvres. Moeller Brew Barn Releases Holiday Beers

November 1, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Moeller Brew Barn is preparing for a successful end to 2020 with the release of several new brews, including Peppermint Bark Silo Seltzer and Roasted Hazelnut Milk Porter in early November.  To pair with Troy Main Street’s upcoming Enchanted Wonderland Weekend, the Troy location, along with the Maria Stein location, are set to release a Peppermint Bark Silo Seltzer.

“We are so excited that Moeller Brew Barn is joining our downtown merchants in the festivities by releasing their new Peppermint Bark Seltzer. It has been so much fun to have Moeller Brew Barn in downtown Troy and we love all the ways they work to support the Troy Community,” mentioned Andrea Keller, Executive Director at Troy Main Street. “We hope everyone will come enjoy downtown Troy’s Enchanted Wonderland Weekend, and we hope that while you’re here you’ll grab a bite to eat and try a new holiday drink at Moeller Brew Barn!”

The Enchanted Wonderland Weekend will be held the first weekend of November with the Peppermint Bark Seltzer being released on Friday, November 6. The beverage will be the first wintery Silo Seltzer in Moeller’s history. A week after its release, the Roasted Hazelnut Milk Porter will hit the taps, an annual tradition.“Our milky-sweet chocolate porter is blended with roasted hazelnuts,” said Moeller. “If you’re looking to indulge, this is the one for you. It’s a perfect pair for the cooler temperatures.”

In early October, Salted Caramel Coffee Ale was released in both Taproom locations. The success of the ale, with 5.2% ABV and 25 IBU, has proven significant. Six-packs can be purchased at participating retailers statewide, and Salted Caramel can be found on tap in both Moeller Brew Barn Taprooms and at various establishments across the state of Ohio. “This year’s salted caramel coffee ale boasts a big aroma of something salty and sweet. All the flavors round out well in its medium body and hop bitterness. Crack one open, give it a vigorous pour, and enjoy,” said Nick Moeller, owner of Moeller Brew Barn.

Every week through November and December, additional seltzer and beer releases will be announced to celebrate the season. To learn more about these various releases, visit Moeller Brew Barn’s online untappd menu or www.moellerbrewbarn.com.

The McRib is Coming Back

October 30, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

I’ve never understood the fascination with this pork sandwich that McDonald’s seems to roll out about once a year for a limited time.  If it was all that great, wouldn’t the add it to the menu?

But for those of you that are fans, mark your calendar for December 2nd when this fan-favorite returns. Not familiar? It’s seasoned boneless pork, swimming in a smoky, tangy barbecue sauce. It’s then topped with slivered onions and tart pickles on the bun to round out the flavor profile.

The McRib has been a beloved menu item at McDonald’s since its inception nearly 40 years ago,” Linda VanGosen, vice president of menu innovation, said in a statement. “There’s nothing quite like the taste of the McRib. To our customers, it’s become more than a delicious, saucy moment … It’s a season, and it’s taking the internet by storm. That’s why this year, we’re proud to serve the McRib nationwide for everyone to enjoy.”

Four Nights of FREE TEDxDayton Talks

October 27, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

For the first time, this year’s TEDxDayton will be a virtual event featuring four new talks on four nights in November — 16 talks in all — during live-stream events that can be viewed online for free.

The events will be live-streamed on YouTube and at TEDxDayton.com at 7 pm on Nov. 10, 12, 17 and 19 — each one an entirely different program with new talks and performers.

“This is both unusual and exciting for us. In past years when our Signature Event has been done live at the Victoria Theatre, we’ve never released the speaker lineup before the day of the show,” said Brenden Wynn, one of this year’s co-chairs of the event. “This year is different, of course. The pandemic made it necessary to make the event virtual, and this year we want our audience to know what to look forward to when they tune in.”

“It was very important to us to keep TEDxDayton going this year,” said co-chair Bridget S. Hutt. “So many events have been canceled or postponed; knowing how important the ideas and stories of TEDxDayton are to our audience, we wanted to present TEDxDayton 2020 as our gift to the community during this challenging year.”

“What is the same this year, despite the online format, is that our talks, hosts and performers have deep Dayton-area connections and each, in their own way, show anew how this is such a wonderful place to live and work. Our speakers have worked as hard as ever to give the talk of their lives, in the TED spirit of presenting us with Ideas Worth Spreading,” said Ron Rollins, the third co-chair for this year’s event.

The live-stream programs will also feature new performances by Dayton guitar master Jim McCutcheon, the popular longtime host of Discover Classical’s “The Intimate Guitar,” and Ted Yoder, a nationally renowned player of the hammered dulcimer who shares how this beloved folk instrument helped him meet a rock star.

Also on deck is a newly created dance by well-known local choreographer Rodney Veal — also a former TEDxDayton speaker — featuring Dayton Contemporary Dance Company member Brianna Rhodes and music by Josh Strange.

“We’re so proud of the entire group of speakers, volunteers, performers and partners and the great work they’ve put in during this unusual year,” Wynn said.

Here is the lineup for each night’s program:

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7 pm

Host: Lisa Wagner
Speakers:
• Daj’za Demmings, discussing intergenerational mentorship.
• Anne Marie Romer and Conor Crippen, discussing Conor’s traumatic brain injury and giving up the burden of trauma.
• Subhashini Ganapathy, sharing how industrial systems engineering is actually fun and improves our world.
• Timothy Nevius, discussing the exploitation of college athletes.
• Performance by Ted Yoder.
The evening will include a Q&A session between Wagner and Demmings about her talk.

Thursday, Nov. 12, 7 pm

Host: Joshua Stucky
Speakers:
• Dr. Ronald Fletcher, former health director for the state of Ohio, on how the AIDS crisis taught us lessons about the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Kathleen Wiant, discussing the dangers of hazing and bullying, and how it affected her family.
• Ann Puckett, sharing how DIY isn’t about doing it yourself and actually builds community.
• Amy Riegel, discussing affordable housing and how our zip codes define our opportunities.
• Performance by Rodney Veal and Brianna Rhodes.
The evening will include a Q&A session between Stucky and Fletcher about his talk.

Tuesday, Nov. 17, 7 pm

Host: Karen Townsend
Speakers:
• Jacquelyn Wright Palmer, discussing genealogy and her family’s history of enslavement.
• Shomari Payne, discussing the inheritance of poverty.
• Christopher Wyatt, discussing how opioids, overdoses and breathing are connected.
• TEDxYouth@Dayton speakers Dana Clark and Ryann Mescher talk about the non-profit they created to address “period poverty.”
The evening will include a Q&A session between Townsend and Palmer to discuss her talk.

Thursday, Nov. 19, 7 pm

Host: Neal Gittleman
Speakers:
• Jodie Mader, talking about how it feels to be a Luddite in a high-tech world.
• Elijah Muhammad, sharing his personal experience with labor trafficking.
• Joshua Montgomery, discussing how building “Star Wars” droids made him a better teacher. • Charlie Campbell, sharing his personal experience with downsizing and saying goodbye.
• Performance by Jim McCutcheon.
The evening will include a Q&A session between Gittleman and Mader about her talk.

Talks and performances were recorded before small, socially distanced and masked groups of family and friends in October at the Creative Arts Center at Wright State University, with the close partnership of staff and students from the College of Liberal Arts.

This year’s event is made possible with support from title partner Wright-Patt Credit Union and our creative partner, Wright State College of Liberal Arts with special thanks to the Theater, Dance, and Motion Pictures Department.
