Igloo Dining Anyone?

October 22, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s hard to miss these two large plastic igloos when you drive down Second Street.  Mudlick proprietor Jen Dean explained that with the popularity of their patio during the pandemic they were really worried about what the change of weather would do to their business, so bringing in these plastic pods made sense.

Their patio seating has been very popular, and the cities support of the pop-up-patio extensions has been a huge factor in Mudlick being able to stay open during this pandemic. With the loss of business from things like theater being cancelled and area businesses working from home it’s been a rough 8 months for this downtown buisness. Being able to extend the outdoor dining season will make a big difference to the bottom, Dean shared.

Two igloos were  put up on the patio yesterday, with a third on backorder.  When dining in an igloo you’re completely insulated from other people. So you’re not only further than 6 feet away, there’s actually a barrier between you and everyone else.

Each igloo will seat a party of up to eight, will be warmed by electric heat, and  sanitized in between parties.  On a nice, sunny day just with solar energy from the sun will  warm up the igloos, very similara to a greenhouse. They have a zippered door that can stay open in nicer weather and two small triangle shaped windows that can be opened as well.

Dean says phones are already ringing with people asking about them.  They can be reserved in two hour increments, with a minimum spend of $200.

Of course, socially distanced inside dining is still an option and Mudlick does have a 2nd floor that can be booked for parties of up to 60, keeping six foot spacing in place.

To reserve your igloo experience call the restaurant or email [email protected]

New Treats from Mikesell’s

October 21, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Mikesell’s Snack Food Company is excited to announce two new flavors hitting your local stores this month. After months of taste testing and interaction with our fans we are proud to announce the release of Salt & Lime Potato Chips and Pepperoni Pizza Puffcorn.  These exciting flavors will be available in your local grocery stores and convenience stores in the Dayton Area by the end of next week; as well as online via the Mikesells.com Chipper Shipper. Get 20% off when ordering on  website.
Use CODE : CHIPORTREAT2020

Finding flavors to add to our product lines is a constant focus for the Mikesell’s Team!  We are always looking for new combinations and classic creations that will enhance the properties of our already premium potato chips and puffcorn.

Pepperoni Pizza is a comfort food loved by fans young and old…and when you put that flavor on a puffed corn snack (with no hulls or hard kernels) you get a portable pizza that the whole family will love!

The Salt & Lime Chips is a bright, tangy, satisfying combination of sweet and salt that is seriously snackable.  This flavor – often found on a corn-based chip – takes on a whole new dimension when paired with a Mikesell’s Original Cut Potato Chip.

“At Mikesell’s it’s all about bringing fans something innovative that’s delicious…and still fits into what they expect from a well-loved product like Mikesell’s Snacks,” said President, Luke Mapp.  “We are really excited to have our fans taste these new products and share them with those they care about.”  Luke Mapp took the helm at Mikesell’s in March 2020; and is the first President of the company from the Mikesell’s Family in some time.

Mikesell’s is counted among the oldest, family-owned, and continually run potato chip companies in the United States.  Our proud history of making high quality, great-tasting potato chips, and extruded corn products is “How Delicious Memories are Made!”

Home Sweet Home Cafe Opens Saturday

September 30, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Brent, Jamie and their daughter Lily

Brent Herzog has dreamed about having his own restaurant since he was 18 years old.  He has worked in the industry, soaking up knowledge at each of his jobs along the way. He has managed Disney restaurants, a minor league baseball stadium, the Spaghetti Factory, Panera Bread, Papa Johns, hotel restaurants, and most currently, the food courts at the University of Dayton.

He met his wife Jaime while they both were working at Walt Disney World. After meeting, they traveled the country for a few years, got married, moved back to Florida, had a daughter, Lily, and finally moved to Dayton, where Jaime grew up. Brent was raised as a dairy farmer up in Minnesota so Ohio was new to him.

They still had the dream of opening their own eatery. They came across Jerri’s in Englewood, that specialized in home cooking and it was for sale. They decided this was the opportunity they’d been looking for.

They feel  lucky to take over Jerri’s Catering. They will be keeping a lot of their more popular menu items like the hot shots and the pork chop dinner, but they will also be adding their own touches.  Brent predicts his one pound burger Home Sweet Home burger will be a big hit.  They will  be adding some outdoor seating and a pastry bar with a coffee and tea station. Eventually, after COVID, they plan on adding  some board games and corn hole.

They are also looking forward to supporting local artists by offering their walls as gallery space.

Check out their menu’s:

Local Filmmaker to make “Triangle Park” Feature Film on the NFL’s First-Ever Game

September 29, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Allen Farst, founder of Niche Productions, is ecstatic to announce today that work has begun on his new project, “Triangle Park,” an upcoming feature film that celebrates the centennial of the National Football League’s first-ever game, played in Dayton, Ohio.

The film will send spectators back in time to experience October 3, 1920, when the hometown Dayton Triangles kicked off league history with a 14-0 victory over the Columbus Panhandles. The contest was played in front of 5,000 fans at Dayton’s now-historic Triangle Park.

Farst plans to shed a light on the largely unknown story of how Dayton emerged as one of the 13 original NFL teams. It’s an enthralling journey that showcases how the city overcame the Great Dayton Flood and experienced an industrial boom just prior to the league getting under way. Football fan or not, moviegoers will be treated to a fascinating piece of Gem City history.

This is one of the greatest stories that needs to be told from the Dayton area. I’m excited to write and direct something that will represent the community the way it should be,” Farst said

Fans can go to triangleparkmovie.com and support the film. “We are hoping to be the All-time highest-funded project in Kickstarter history!” Farst said. “Hopefully, people will help us support Triangle Park in a big way.”

Triangle Park will be Licensing exclusive photos, programs, documents and film from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and archival footage from NFL Films.

Production will begin in 2021, with the movie scheduled to be released sometime in 2022.  A kickstarter campaign to help fund the film will be launched laster this week.  Join the email list for more info.

KAJILLIONAIRE Opens, Honoring RBG, and Big Titles Coming To The Neon

September 23, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

We’ve lost an amazing woman and a marvelous judge on the Supreme Court, and we want to honor her achievements by bringing back the hit documentary RBG to the big screen for a handful of special screenings.  This return engagement will start Friday!
Additionally, we will open Miranda July’s new film – KAJILLIONAIRE – starring Evan Rachel Wood, Debra Winger, Richard Jenkins and Gina Rodriguez.  The pictures below are a couple photos that I quickly snapped while at Sundance in January.  Miranda has a unique and fascinating voice as a filmmaker and storyteller, and this quirky film is full of surprises.  If you’re a person who still listens to and loves vinyl, you can enter our contest to win a lovely vinyl soundtrack from this film by posting a picture of your favorite soundtrack on your facebook or instagram page and tagging @neonmovies.
Lastly, in our Virtual Cinema, we just added the wonderful documentary OLIVER SACKS: HIS OWN LIFE, and on Friday, we’ll add a touchingly beautiful film THE ARTIST’S WIFE starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern.
I’ve got some fun news about what’s coming down the road for in-person engagements.  Next Friday, we will open SAVE YOURSELVES! – a hit from this year’s Sundance.  On Oct. 9, we’ll open both ON THE ROCKS from Sofia Coppola (with Bill Murray!) and THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 from Aaron Sorkin!
As a reminder…tickets for STEVIE NICKS 24 KARAT GOLD THE CONCERT are on sale now.  Current scheduled shows are for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 and Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 and 7:00.

New Bookings for In-Person Screenings:
Synopsis for KAJILLIONAIRE: “From acclaimed writer/director Miranda July comes a profoundly moving and wildly original comedy. Con-artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), to swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their next scam, only to have their entire world turned upside down.” (Focus Features) Click the image below to visit the film’s official site.
Synopsis for RBG: We’ve lost a true American hero, and we’re celebrating her life by bringing back the fantastic documentary about her life! “At the age of 85, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had developed a lengthy legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. But the unique personal journey of her rise to the nation’s highest court has been largely unknown, even to some of her biggest fans – until now. RBG explores Ginsburg’s life and career.” (Magnolia Pictures) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.

New in our Virtual Cinema:
Synopsis for OLIVER SACKS: HIS OWN LIFE: “This wonderful documentary explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and storyteller, as he shares intimate details of his battles with drug addiction, homophobia, and a medical establishment that accepted his work only decades after the fact. Sacks was a fearless explorer of unknown mental worlds who helped redefine our understanding of the brain and mind, the diversity of the human experience, and our shared humanity.” (Zeitgeist Films) VARIETY wrote, “A portrait of the poetic neurologist of AWAKENINGS, shot at the end of his life, [which] takes a tender and thrilling look at the sacred demons that drove him.” Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access for $12.
Synopsis for THE ARTIST’S WIFE: Available starting September 25! “Claire (Lena Olin) lives a domestic life in the Hamptons as the wife of celebrated artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern). Once a promising painter herself, Claire now lives in the shadow of her husband’s illustrious career. While preparing work for his final show, Richard’s moods become increasingly erratic, and he is diagnosed with dementia. As his memory and behavior deteriorate, she shields his condition from the art community while trying to reconnect him with his estranged daughter and grandson from a previous marriage. Challenged by the loss of her world as she knew it, Claire must now decide whether to stand with Richard on the sidelines or step into the spotlight herself.” Click the image below to pre-order 72 hour access to the film for $12.  You can watch the trailer HERE.

Wanna know what’s coming down the road in our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.)  On October 2, we’ll open the award-winning coming-of-age film ONCE UPON A RIVER as well as a new documentary with Ohio connections – THE DISRUPTED. A really wonderful documentary – SAUL AND RUBY’S HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR BAND will open on Oct. 7, and on Oct. 9, we’ll have a film that art lovers will adore – AGGIE – a film about philanthropist Agnes Gund. On Oct 14, we’ll begin a film called MY NAME IS PEDRO – an inspiring documentary about a teacher and how transformative a teacher can be to the community at large. More to come!
Next Saturday, Oct. 3 from 11:00am until 4:00pm, many businesses in downtown Dayton will have a Sidewalk Sale.  We decided to join in this time with the help of some friends.  We’ll have our popcorn available for folks who would rather not come inside…and we’ve invited Pink Moon Goods to come set up shop for the afternoon.  Pink Moon Goods is an exciting new retail business in Dayton.  Their selection of home goods is curated and includes items that combine skill, intelligence, and virtue for ethical living.  If you are looking for new ways to reduce waste at home, support small businesses who value and respect protecting the environment, or some good old fashion socially conscious retail therapy there is sure to be something at Pink Moon Goods for you.  You can check them out on Instagram – @pinkmoongoods.
“All Access” passes and single “tickets” for all virtual presentations of The 15th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Festival are now on sale.  We had to make a major pivot this year to make the festival happen – so about 90% of it will take place virtually.  A $50 pass will get you access to all 6 virtual screenings (5 features and a package of shorts) as well as 2 tickets to our one in-person package – TOP DRAWER SHORTS VOL #2.  The line-up is strong, and we’re still ironing out lots of details (virtual filmmaker Q&A’s, video work with our sponsors, etc.).  Click the image below to check out all of our selections.  The festival is set for Oct. 9-15. Virtual components will be accessible to anyone in Ohio…so please help spread the word.  If you need a little help figuring it all out, I’ve created a tutorial video that is viewable HERE. (The image below is from the short film THE SHAWL– playing in TOP DRAWER SHORTS VOL #2.)
We hope to see you soon!
Be safe & well.
My best,
Jonathan

Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day!

September 18, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s National Cheeseburger day!

There are several theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger which dates back to the 1920s. According to one story, in 1926, Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. At that time during an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.

However, like several iconic foods, many people and restaurants claim the origin story. For example, in Los Angeles, a restaurant called O’Dell’s placed the cheeseburger on its menu in 1928. It came smothered with chili. Further, Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky claims that they invented the cheeseburger in 1934. There is one record that tells the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, CO bragging rights is the trademark that they received in 1935 for the name “cheeseburger.”

Gus Belt was another who applied for the trademark of those words. He was the founder of Steak n’ Shake and sometime in the 1930s, he also applied for the trademark. Despite all claims, one thing is sure that the cheeseburger consists of all the marks that satisfy craving and the cheeseburger is not going anywhere and always be enjoyed not only in America but in several places in the country.

Here are he  restaurants that are offering deals:
