Dayton at Work and Play: Richard Lundin

July 18, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Richard Lundin, property manager of Front Street, home to the largest community of artists, artisans and small businesses in Dayton.

“My wife and I were living in Chicago” he told me. “When I retired the owners of Front Street asked if I could help them out. I thought I’d be here a few months, but that was five years ago. We love living in Dayton, and we love our customers, the artists and small businesses who rent space at Front Street.”

“A hundred years ago these three buildings housed a company that made stamped envelopes that were sold in post offices across the country. Now we have 125 different tenants, about two thirds of which are artists or groups of artists. To help these artists, we’ve done what we can to attract customers to this space. We have music and food at First Friday, Second Look Saturday, and Third Sunday events that attract sizable crowds. The pandemic has hurt the artists who rent here, but no one has moved out. We’re still 100% full, with a waiting list.”

“To attract more customers we’ve made several changes to our outdoor spaces. We started a sculpture garden, and we added an outdoor gallery space. The gallery is called The Cube, and will be curated by Nicholaus Arnold. We’ve also added a few outdoor studios in a secure lot next to one of our buildings.”

“Sunday from 11 to 4 we’re having what we call a soft re-opening of our 3rd Sunday Market. There will be art, crafts, lunch and live entertainment. Many of our artists will have their studios open, so there will be things to do both indoors and out.”

The Contemporary Dayton Reopens from 29th Annual Members Show

July 10, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The Contemporary Dayton (The Co) presents The 29th Annual Open Members’ Show. The Co is thrilled to re-open its galleries for the first time since COVID-19 safe-distancing measures were put into place in March with one of its most popular exhibitions of the year—a literal celebration of over 100 local and Ohio artists.

The Annual Open Members’ Show is our annual all-media, all-level Artist Member celebration. All Artist Members were invited to submit one work of art that spoke to the theme: Reflections of COVID-19. Since many in our community faced financial hardship this summer, The Co opened up the show to all artists regardless of Membership and were surprised and excited to accept over 100 works of art. Artworks will also be for sale to benefit both the artists and The Co.

The exhibition opened today  with a Friends & Family Open House.  Art will be on display through August 15th during normal gallery hours.

The Co requests that masks be worn and social distancing practiced for the duration of the event.

The exhibition is organized and installed by The Co’s guest curator, Michael Goodson, Senior Curator of Exhibitions at Wexner Center for the Arts. Over the past 15 years, as Director of Exhibitions at CCAD’s Beeler Gallery and James Cohan Gallery, NY, and now as Senior Curator of Exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts.

The exhibition will include a number of cash and recognition awards. This year’s prize juror is Willis “Bing” Davis, renowned artist, cultural leader and founder of Dayton’s EbonNia Gallery and the SHANGO Center for The Study of African American Act & Culture. Davis will be selecting artworks to receive The Lombard Prize for Best in Show, The Mike Goheen Memorial Award for Emerging Photographers, and The Mayor’s Office Exhibition Award.

Condado Tacos Now Open At The Greene

July 9, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Last night’s full house at the Sneak Peek event at Condado Tacos was well received, with folks appreciating the variety of options for tacos, frozen drinks and attentive customer service.  The mural filled walls are amazing, all created by local artists.  Pictured below Tiffany Clark has included so many Dayton celebs- we just love this! Other local artists featured include Adam Hernandez, Alexandra Wood, Bryan Brady, Alex Linton, Joshua Redmond, Nicole Gangwer, AC Eckely, Maggie Reckers, ETCH, Rachael Kaufman and Amy Kollar Anderson!

Today to celebrate the grand opening, guests can enjoy a free taco with purchase and half-priced house margaritas all day!  In addition, guests who post their taco photo to Instagram with #condadothegreene will also be entered to win one of 25 $100 gift cards. The Dayton restaurant is the 17th in the Columbus based  build-your-own-taco concept that started in 2014.

The concept is all about choices, there are 9 different margaritas, and even more choices when you mix and match the flavors.  Draft and bottled beer as well as Sangria options are also available. House Horchata, lemonade, tea and fountain drinks are also available. The menu suggests you ask your server for tequila and whiskey options. Chips and Dips are your next set of choices, starting with four salsa options, five kinds of queso and of course guacamole.

We started our meal out with chips with 1/2 portions of Queso with  chorizo, pico de guaco and corn salsa queso (dips are $4-5 for 1/2 portions) or 3 for $12.

And then it’s time to build your own taco. The menu walks you through the process, which begins with your selection of a shell or a bowl.  You then pick your protein from the 11 options, then onto toppings, cheese, salsa and sauces.

And don’t worry, you can also choose from a list of taco suggestions, like the BUBBA KUSH -Peezler shell, pulled pork, jackfruit BBQ sauce, cilantro + onions, jicama + cabbage slaw, Middlefield smoked cheddar, and pineapple salsa which runs $4, THE HEATER – Sweet Lucy shell, tequila-lime steak, jicama + cabbage slaw, pickled jalapeños, cilantro + onions, pepper jack cheese, Mexican chimichurri, and cilantro-lime aioli for $5 or the vegetarian MANTIS = Sweet Lucy shell, pulled jackfruit, cilantro + onions, tomatoes, pepper jack cheese, and habanero-mango sauce.

Her’s a build your own taco  featuring tequila lime steak, cilantro lime dressing, pineapple salsa in a  peezler shell (flour soft + corn hard + bacon refried beans + sour cream + guac)

One of the options that may come in very handy is the online wait list– you can check to see how long the wait is, add yourself to the list and shop until it’s time for your table

Condado Tacos

Beavercreek, OH 45440.

Hours:

Sunday-Thursday from 11 am to 11 pm

Panelists to Discuss Racial Justice Issues

July 7, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Layla F. Saad’s book Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor offers a lot to think about, and plenty to discuss. Dayton Metro Library presents an online, recorded Panel Discussion on Wednesday, July 8, 5 – 6 p.m.  View the discussion live at www.BigRead.org. The recorded conversation will be posted online for later viewing.

Amelia Robinson, Dayton Daily News Community Impact Editor, will moderate the discussion. The panelists are:

Debbie Feldman, President and CEO, Dayton Children’s Hospital

Shannon Isom, President & CEO, YWCA Dayton

Kevin M. Kelly, Executive Director, Dayton International Peace Museum

Brian O. Martin, AICP, Executive Director, Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission

Questions or comments for the panelists to consider should be submitted in advance at the Facebook event page or online here.

“This will surely be an important conversation for our community as we all work to push Dayton forward,” Amelia Robinson said.

“We have no doubt that hearing from these respected community leaders will help all of us better understand racism locally, and feel more knowledgeable and confident discussing ways we can move our community forward as a result,” said Tim Kambitsch, Library Executive Director.

Me and White Supremacy takes readers on a 28-day journey to dismantle the privilege within themselves so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on people of color, and in turn, help other white people to do better, too. It is available for unlimited borrowing in eBook and Audiobook formats through OverDriveat DaytonMetroLibrary.org through July 31, meaning an unlimited number of readers can borrow and read the book at the same time.

“I was motivated to become involved in this project because it is only through honest and often painful dialogue can we ever hope to make progress,” said Kevin Kelly of the Dayton International Peace Museum. “We have a long-overdue opportunity and a responsibility to find permanent solutions and fresh ideas on how to finally end the timeless scourge of racism and inequity in this country.”

“I feel it is important to participate in this project because this movement is so very painful for everyone,” said MVRPC’s Brian Martin. “We feel like we need to do something. I’m hopeful that this Big Read will lead to more discussions across the area, Ohio, and the Nation.”

View the discussion live at www.BigRead.org. The recorded conversation will be posted online for later viewing. For more information about the book, the author, or other ways to continue the conversation, visit The Big Read website.

New Ownership for Tipp City Restaurant

July 7, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef Rob Scott worked as the sous chef under Art Chin at Greenfire Bistro for about 3 years. Then Art retired in 2019 and turned over the restaurant to a new owner.  But things didn’t go quite as planned and Art grudgingly ended up running the restaurant again.  Then came the mandatory shut down brought on by the pandemic. And that  became an opportunity for Chef Rob Scott to own his own restaurant.

Today, July 7th is the first day that Greenfire Fresh will open it’s doors.  Chef Scott took a few moments today to share with us his vision for what the business will look like under his ownership. He says he’ll keep about 10 of  the top sellers from the Chin regime.  “We are doubling down of the the seafood, we’ve added Chilean sea bass to the menu and will have a new take on fish tacos,” shared Scott. “We’ll feature house made Crème Brule and key lime pie for dessert.”

Corner Kitchen Shuts Its Doors

June 29, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

After just having reopened with a quick-serve concept earlier this month, the husband and wife owners who opened  Corner Kitchen five years ago have decided against operating during the pandemic and posted this on their Facebook Page today:

It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we write this, but we cannot ignore the situation in which we find ourselves. We are officially closing Corner Kitchen indefinitely.

Throughout the Miami Valley, we have felt so much love and support from the day we opened five years ago. We know that the passion of our hard-working staff provided so many memorable dinners and led to many, many friendships. However, the challenges of the current pandemic and the affect that it has on restaurant businesses has made us analyze the viability of continuing to operate. While we reopened with a change to our concept, we realize that we had to make a departure from what has come to be expected of us and the Corner Kitchen dining experience.

A restaurant operates with a tacit public trust that the top priority is the health and well-being of the guests that they serve and the staff that they employ, and that has always been paramount for us. Neither our new model nor our previous model can survive in this current climate with our expense load and reduction in volume. We simply cannot find a financial model in any iteration of the dozens of scenarios that we have explored without either operating in an unsafe environment or incurring insurmountable debt.

Although this is the hardest decision that we have ever made, it is one that would be irrational to delay or foolish to ignore. Our initial hiatus and reopening planning during stay-at-home provided us with precious time as a family, a challenge for all restaurant owners, and that perspective has also made us rethink and focus on our future at home.

We implore you to continue to support our local, independent restaurants. They need you more than ever.

We shall cherish all of the memories that our community shared with us. We are sorry that we couldn’t do more, and we are utterly heartbroken, we will miss all of you – we will miss the joy that you brought to our lives. Thank you for helping make our dream come true.

With great regret we say goodbye to Corner Kitchen,
Jack and Natalie

We can’t imagine what an agonizing decision this must have been, and we wish the Skilliter family the very best for their future.  A true loss for the Dayton culinary world.

Peruvian Street Food Makes Up the Menu at Fino Sur

May 28, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The husband and wife team behind FINO SUR were both born in Lima Peru.  They came to Dayton 15 years ago and have been working in restaurants over the years, while catering Peruvian food for friends and parties.  Last September they participated in The Heritage Festival and after success there, decided to open a restaurant  featuring the foods they loved to make.

The goal was to open the new restaurant in Centerville, OH early March 2020 and bring delicious Peruvian dishes and culture to the city. Unfortunately, the covid-19 crisis delayed our opening but they are finally ready to serve you.

Learn more about the food they serve:

How would you describe Peruvian cuisine?
Peruvian cuisine as we know it today is a product of miscegenation that occurs in Peru. First The arrival of the Europeans with the discovery of America and the conquest. Then they come to migration from different parts of the world. This is how Africans, Chinese, Italians, Japanese, Jews, and Arabs arrive. This mixture of cultures and races was given in the homes of Peru. Immigrants begin to cook the products they find in the new continent using their techniques. This is the case, for example, that the Lomo saltado is born, pieces of meat sauteed with onion, tomato, yellow pepper, tools such as the wok and the technique of the Chinese immigrants that giving it a few turns and the wrapping in the flames creates an exquisite dish like this. What does anticuchos mean?
The name of anticuchos derives from the Quechua words “Anti”: an eastern region of the Andes and Kuchu: cut. They are popular and inexpensive meat dishes that originated in the Andes during the pre-Columbian era specifically in the Antisuyu region of the Tahuantinsuyo (Inca Empire). The most popular anticucho is that of the heart of beef and you find it in the streets of Lima as well as in restaurants.
Why is one of the most popular sauces of Peruvian food called Huancaina sauce?

The most popular sauce of Peruvian cuisine takes its name in tribute to the city of Huancayo in the Mantaro river valley in the Junin region. The creator of the recipe bought the potato in this region and named it in honor of the city of Huancayo “Papa a la Huancayo-Huancaina”.

What is Rocoto?

Rocoto is a hot pepper. Its name has its origins in Quechua “luqutu” o “rukutu” is found mainly in Peru and Bolivia. Rocoto is a hot pepper that dates back to pre-Inca times. For those that like spicy food we are making a spice sauce to accompany your food.

What is Chimichurri sauce?

A sauce that has origin in South America in the countryside of Argentina and Uruguay. It is made of finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, oregano, olive oil, and red wine vinegar.
