Liquor Permit Renewals Extended

April 27, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control announced Friday that it would be extending the May 18 deadline for renewing C and D liquor permits. This extension applies to permits set to expire June 1. A new deadline will be established once the order banning on-premises consumption is lifted.

“We are listening and recognize the financial strain of permit renewal fees to businesses at this time. Extending the deadline will provide economic relief to permit holders by giving them some breathing room for renewal submissions,” said DOLC Superintendent Jim Canepa in a press release.

Holders of permits set to expire June 1 are eligible to take advantage of this extension. This encompasses approximately 8,400 establishments holding roughly 20,000 permits in the Western portion of the state; a full list of included counties can be found here. If a business has already mailed in its extension, DOLC will contact them to determine if they’d like to proceed with their renewal or wait for the new deadline.

Many local permit holders received this correspondence from

Sandy Wilson, Program Administrator the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Liquor Control.  For more info she can be reached at (614) 644-2472.

Is my license fee due mid-May for the June renewal for District 2/the western portion of the state?

• No. The May 18, 2020 filing deadline for the June 1 renewal period is being waived at this time. A new filing deadline will be established when the Director of the Ohio Department of Health lifts her order.

Who is eligible for the Liquor Permit Renewal Extension?

• Class C and D Liquor permit holders in District 2/the western portion of the state who have on-premises general consumption permits due for renewal on June 1.

What if I already submitted my renewal?

• The Division will contact the permit holder to determine if they’d like to proceed with their renewal.

Awesome EggRoll Enters Food Truck Scene

April 22, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

After a 40 year career in the home improvement business, Michael Kauffman decided it was time for his something different. He says he’s  had a passion for cooking and for the past few years he just hasn’t enjoyed the remodeling business as much as he should. A good friend of his told him to stop talking the about the food truck and just do it.  So he took his old tool trailer and began transforming it, and he says, “if this all works out I’ve done my very last kitchen remodel.”

Four weeks ago he opened Awesome Eggrolls.  You’ll find his trailer parked in the lot of Wayne Overhead Door in Centerville at the corner of State Route 48 and Lytle-Five Points  Road.  He plans on being open Monday through Friday 11am -4pm, but probably not if it’s raining.  Last weekend he was open Saturday and Sunday to make up for some of the rainy days.

On a recent visit for lunch I tried his Special- 3 egg rolls, 1 side and a drink for just $8. I had his original egg roll – which is sausage, hamburger, cabbage, carrots and broccoli, his Philly (hamburger, peppers, onion, mushroom and provolone cheese) and his Chicken Philly.

He makes all his egg rolls onsite, with fresh ingredients, cooked to order. Served up with his own sweet and sour/soy sauce, available in mild or spicy.   Egg rolls are $3 each, 2 for $5 or 3 for $7.   His sides, currently crab rangoon of fried rice are $2 and soda’s and water are $1.

We’ll be back to visit soon and if you go visit, tell him DaytonDining sent you!

Oakwood Resident Launches Support Dayton Website

April 20, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Will Brisbane, Founder Support Dayton

Things changed for Oakwood resident Will Brisbane after the news came  of the cancellation of NCAA First Four in Dayton.  “While I understood the rationale, my first thoughts were that the locally owned businesses in the Greater Dayton area would suffer greatly from the lost revenue the tournament usually brings. As state mandated closures and restrictions started, I realized the danger to these businesses was rising.”  He continued, “I love Dayton, it’s entrepreneurs, and the businesses they run. I wanted to create a means for people to provide support for locally owned and operated small businesses during this difficult time.”

So Brisbane, with some help from his friends, launched Support Dayton. Val Smith of Real Art designed the logo, Tom Whallen helped him file the necessary  paperwork to form his non-profit. He’s enlisted more friends to help build the website, and spread the word.
This is a not-for-profit venture aimed at helping small businesses that are owned and operated in the Gem City to stay afloat during these times. The website describes the organizations purpose:   “Our local business owners need us. Most have little to no revenue coming in and there’s no real end in sight. So what do we do? How can we ensure the Dayton institutions make it through this tough time? The short answer is they need our money and our support.  According to Brisbane “for many this is just a listing of what services they still have available whether it be online ordering, According to Brisbane “for many this is just a listing of what services they still have available whether it be online ordering, limited contact carryout, etc. For others it means selling of gift cards and links to donate.”limited contact carryout, etc. For others it means selling of gift cards and links to donate.”
It costs businesses nothing to be listed. Brisbane’s “hope is that this site will help local businesses by promoting their services and providing patrons of these businesses a means to continue to support them.” Currently there are over 50 organizations listed on the website. Businesses qualify by being a Miami Valley owned and operated small business and can get listed by submitting a form at https://www.supportdayton.com/business-owners. All the information needed to get listed is there and, again, it costs nothing.

Tender Mercy Launches Laurentine- a video series featuring Sommelier Lauren Gay

April 14, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

So what do you do when your brand new night club is open for just three days before the Governor’s Order shuts you down?  You pivot and become a pop-up bodega, for your booze and necessities for your neighbors. This Dayton native left town to explore the world in 2010, did a stint in the Peace Core, spent some time in LA and Vegas and then she and her boyfriend, Brandon Fugate (now the Beverage Manager at Tender Mercy) came back to Dayton to work with The Idea Collective and open Tender Mercy.  She wants to use her wine knowledge, industry connections and help the Miami Valley use this Pandemic required slow down to explore new wines and become more educated about the industry. So yesterday they launched:

Daughtry 2020 Tour At The Rose in August

April 13, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

GRAMMY® Award-nominated and multi-platinum selling band Daughtry has announced 2020 tour dates with special guest The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. The tour will include a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Thursday, August 20th.

As the frontman for the band bearing his name, Chris Daughtry has become one of the most visible and consistent rock & roll torchbearers of the 21st Century. Daughtry has released five albums, all of which reached the Billboard Top Ten and have combined sales over 8 million copies in the U.S.

Daughtry’s self-titled debut was the best-selling album of 2007, which contained four Top Twenty hit singles including the Grammy-nominated smash “It’s Not Over.” Leave This Town also reached Number One in 2009, while 2011’s Break the Spell was certified gold. 2013’s Baptized, featured the platinum-selling “Waiting for Superman,” which the singer points to as a turning point in his songwriting.

“It was a nice hybrid of where we had been and where we’re going, and it opened my eyes a bit,” says Daughtry. “Everything was so serious and doom and gloom, and ‘You broke my heart,’ but we never saw ourselves as those people outside the music — onstage we were always joking around. That helped me wrap my head around the fact that we can be light-hearted and still be us. And that really changed the way I approach the songs in general.”

Daughtry and his band have been performing together for over a decade. “Like anything with a ten year relationship, you know more about each other than you do most of your family,” says Chris Daughtry. “It’s a love-hate thing — you get sick of being around them, but after two weeks at home you’re ready to get back out on the road and do it again. The fan base really keeps us alive. That’s the key ingredient to keeping a band together — that’s the gasoline, and without it you can’t run.”

One thing that has kept the fire burning for Daughtry has been the need to constantly challenge himself creatively. This kind of ambition has also extended to the work of Daughtry the band. “We always try to push ourselves outside of the familiar parameters,” says the singer. “If it’s anything like we’ve done before, then it’s not good enough for the record.

“If you look at the groups doing it for twenty-plus years,” he continues, “they were always changing their style, testing the water, going off the rails from what people expected — Zeppelin, Elton, Prince, they never did the same record twice. So there’s always that effort to push yourself as an artist, but I never want to abandon that sense of melody and sense of something that people can grab onto, whether it conjures up memories or helps them through a tough time. That’s what I love about music, when it makes me feel something.”

More than ten years after launching with a massive splash, Chris Daughtry claims that he and the band have grown the most on stage, and that it’s altered his whole sense of his work. “When we first came out, I’d only known what I’d seen,” he says. “I didn’t know how to be vulnerable, with no pretense. Now it’s walk onstage and, especially in our acoustic shows, just be flat-out honest and open. It’s really helped me realize that’s actually what fans want — they want 100 percent honesty and feeling like they got to know you better.”

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Friday, April 17th at www.Ticketmaster.com andwww.Rosemusiccenter.com. Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

Easter Meals To Go

April 7, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Forced to reinvent themselves amid the COVID-19 crisis, Miami Valley restaurants-turned-takeout hubs now welcome the chance to bring comfort to another change-in-the-making:  Easter meals to go.

“So much will be different this year for the holidays and for many, that won’t be easy,” said Joe Castellano, owner of Amber Rose, who switched to takeout after coronavirus restrictions forced dining-room closures.

“Many families are separated now or can’t travel to see each other, so big gatherings of family and friends won’t happen like they usually do,” Castellano said. “Traditional holiday foods can bring normalcy, familiarity through food. If we can help make that happen, I’m honored.”

So order your Easter supper, plan to Zoom in your family and friends and celebrate the holiday with a great meal.  This list is a work in progress, if you know of an Easter meal that should be added please let us know by email.

Young’s Jersey Dairy Creates A Drive-Thru!

April 6, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Young’s Jersey Dairy has a new way to serve you at the Dairy Store – A Drive-Thru!
To conform to the current public health rules, they are only taking orders using their newly created drive-thru. They’ve curated their menu to their best selling sandwiches, side orders (cheese curds!), homemade ice cream cones, shakes and sundaes.

When you arrive, follow the signs to the order booth located in front of the Dairy Store in the parking lot, place your order (one of our amazing Staff will be there to take your order), then pull around to the pickup area located in the back of the store and be on your way.

Young’s feels this limited menu is the  is the best way to get through the month of April while keeping Young’s open, giving the ability to keep some of their staff employed, and doing their part to keep everyone safe.

You can also order using their online app and then follow the sign for the pickup area.

https://toasttakeout.com (If you can’t find Young’s Dairy after you downloaded the app, you may need to ‘change your location’ within the app. Type in Yellow Springs and you’ll find them there.) You can use this app to preorder your pints (and breaded curds!). They’ll have your order ready for you when you arrive.

McAlister’s Deli Helped Lizzo Feed Front Line Heroes

March 31, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s not everyday you get a call that pop sensation  Lizzo wants to send lunch to the nurses at Grandview.  According to Amy Cotterman, the Catering Director for the Columbus and Dayton McAlister’s Deli, she got that call from Lizzo’s people this past Sunday.  They were coordinating lunch to deliveries to front line workers across the country.  They had done some homework on Dayton area hospitals, and asked Amy to confirm that their choice would be a good fit for this donation.  Through several more phone calls, arrangements were made and today boxed lunches were delivered to Grandview Hospital.

Dayton has been on Lizzo’s radar for a long time, as she has family in the area.  Following tragic mass shootings in Dayton this past August, Lizzo was among many people who took to social media to express feelings of helplessness and frustration at the lack of progress following gun-related tragedies. On twitter she posted

“Just got off the phone w/ fam in Dayton… it was a close call for them but that’s not the case for 9 other families between this & the terrorist attack in El Paso & recent other shootings I feel completely helpless.. make noise & bring awareness.. vote.. don’t normalize this.”

In a video she posted online today Lizzo shared this message:

“Hello, Grandview Medical Center. It is Lizzo and I just wanted to say thank you. A thousand times thank you for all of the hard work that you guys have been doing during this pandemic. We are trying to stay inside and we are thinking of you, and praying for you guys every day, but I wanted to do a little bit more than that and send you guys a treat. I hope you guys enjoy your food. I hope it puts a smile on your face and I hope that you guys have a moment of appreciation or that you feel the appreciation from me and all the people around the world who are thinking of you 24/7. So, if you need anything else, let me know. But other than that, have a great day and just know that I love you.”

Amy Cotterman

Cotterman shared that franchise owner Jake Mulvey believes “Health care professionals are truly on the front lines of this Pandemic and McAlister’s Deli is in awe of the work these  medical professionals do.”  Mulvey took over and has turned around the two Miami Valley locations in the fall of 2018.

Cotterman says that in dealing with the arrangements with  Lizzo’s team, they were delightful, charming and obviously have their hearts in the right place.  McCallister’s employees got a kick out of the order from Lizzo and they appreciate the fact that people care.  She also shared that they’ve done similar catering orders for other celebrity clients including John Legend.

On Thursday McCalister’s Dei will be feeding the ER at Soin Medical Center  on their own cost, “because these warriors are our heroes!”
