17 Montgomery County Artists Awarded Opportunity Grants for 2020

January 17, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The Artist Opportunity Grant program, which is funded by the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District (MCACD) and administered by Culture Works, provides funding for Montgomery County artists of all disciplines to pursue professional development opportunities and complete new works. Applications for funding are reviewed by an independent panel of artists, arts administrators, educators, and community leaders.

Based on the recommendations of the 2019-20 grant panel, 17 local artists will receive grants totaling $39,336 in 2020–the largest amount ever awarded through the program.

Read about their upcoming projects below:

LEROY BEAN

Opportunity: Travel to France for the 2020 Conference on James Baldwin for academics, artists, and activists celebrating the 50th anniversary of Baldwin’s arrival in Saint-Paul de Vence. Bean will be engaged in scholarly exploration of all things Baldwin and social justice, developing his skills in creative writing under the facilitation of Cornelius Eady, a co-founder of Cave Canem.

About the Artist: Leroy Bean is a spoken word poet, published author, and co-founder of Underdog Academy and Baldwin Café from Dayton, Ohio. An artist activist, he uses his gift to describe different aspects of beauty and life that all can relate to, but also to speak truth about racially charged, social and political issues. He has shared stages with accomplished artists such as Sierra Leone, HBO Def poet Black Ice, Sunny Patterson, and Bing Davis and has performed in many venues, including the PNC Arts Annex, Levitt Pavilion, Schuster Center, and Victoria Theatre.

Artist Statement: “Currently I am diving deeper into being a teaching artist, and I have launched my online writing workshop for writers of all kinds to learn communication skills, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, creativity, how to apply literary devices, using writing as a tool of personal wellness, and more! I am also currently working between three poetry book ideas, all of which I am keeping in mind during my trip to France, and I hope to find a residency to be the resource of time, space, and funding I need to manifest either one or all of these projects in 2020.”

CURTIS BOWMAN

Opportunity: Attend the Algonkian Writers Retreat for five days of intensive work with established authors on a work in progress.

Artist Statement: “I have been a storyteller all my life, but up to now, most of my writing has been in service of a goal: selling something, recruiting volunteers, to make people laugh at a conference or to teach people at a workshop. Recently, I have been inspired to tell a larger story.”

CAITLIN CARTWRIGHT

Opportunity: Create a body of work, an interactive workshop, and a gallery show inspired by the events in Dayton, Ohio, in the summer of 2019 focusing on the healing and resilience of our community.

About the Artist: Caitlin Cartwright is a social change artist whose vibrant narrative works combine painting, drawing, and collage to explore the stories that connect people across cultures. Although her intimate works deal with themes of loss and isolation, each piece contains elements of community, comfort, and hope. Many years spent living and working with vulnerable populations in locales such as Madagascar, Namibia, India, and elsewhere influence both the emotional and geographical scope of her pieces. Caitlin earned her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, as well as a masters degree in sustainable international development from SIT, and completed a six-moth residency at the Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft in Columbia, NC. In combination with a long career in global health, she uses art as a storytelling tool for economic empowerment, peace building, and healing and wellness. Caitlin is currently based in Dayton, where she is the Director of Programming at We Care Arts. Her works and collaborative projects continue to be shown both nationally and abroad.

These works–which will feature authors such as Toni Morrison and Helen Oyeyemi and poets such as Ntozake Shange and Upile Chisala–will be displayed at the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch gallery in August/September 2020.

About the Artist: Janyce Denise Glasper is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and independent scholar. She has a BFA in drawing from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and post baccalaureate and MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Artist Statement: “Through the disciplines of figurative drawing, painting, and writing, my artistic practices emphasize the collective beauty in the Black experience, especially in womanism, a term coined by Alice Walker. My primary goal is to continue dismantling the stereotypical perception of Black bodies.”

JOSH MERRITT

Opportunity: Attend the 2020 Glass Art Society Annual Conference in Smaland, Sweden to study new techniques and technological advances in glass blowing.

Artist Statement: “I began blowing glass in 2009 as an apprentice. I studied, created, and now enjoy teaching numerous glass art techniques, including vessels, ornaments, flowers and more.

In 2016, I moved to Columbus and enrolled at The Ohio State University. At OSU’s glass program, I continued to develop my skill and passion for glassblowing. I also expanded into other areas such as stained glass, fusing, engraving and sandblasting.

The magic of glass never ceases to amaze me: the challenge of creating an intricate glass piece; the delicate balance of heating and cooling at different times and stages; the planning and teamwork required for success. It all comes together into an intense moment from which either fine art or floor shards are created.”

Artist Statement: “My work is both abstract and realistic, mostly done in oil, acrylics, and mixed media. My paintings are very colorful because I believe that color sparks synesthesia and involuntarily evokes feelings of joy. I look forward to improving my work as an artist and delving deeper into the question of whether color plays a role in uplifting the general well-being of individuals and thereby alleviating depression.”

SARAH ROBERTSON

Opportunity: Travel to Pittsburgh, PA to attend the Kinderflute+Blockiflute certification course, which is considered by flute teachers as one of the ideal methods to teach young children flute. The unique method is designed to help flute students find and establish their innate potential as musicians and human beings. About the Artist: Sarah Robertson holds a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from Indiana University of South Bend and a Master of Music in Music Education from Wright State University. KATE HUSER SANTUCCI

Opportunity: Travel to Seattle to attend a studio workshop with encaustic artist Alicia Tormey, where participants will learn new techniques, work on professional marketing and the business of being an artist, learn how to ship encaustic paintings, and continue to develop their personal voices as encaustic painters.

About the Artist: Kate Huser Santucci graduated from Wright State University with a BFA in visual art, concentrating in sculpture. She now primarily works in mixed-media encaustic painting, using beeswax and pigments to create multi-layered images that reference her interest in the natural sciences.

Artist Statement: “In my current body of work, I use mixed-media encaustic painting techniques to explore themes such as time–both on a cosmic and human scale–communication outside of the human sphere, and the way things change, both for people during a single lifetime and for the universe we are in. I often use images of microbes, plants, animals, bones, and water to tell the story of the way we change and evolve. The work involves multiple layers and textures, inviting the viewer to look deeper into the piece and glimpse imagery floating beneath the surface of the wax.”

JESSECA YNEZ SIMMONS

Opportunity: Travel to New York City and Los Angeles to conduct on-camera interviews with four crucial interview subjects for “We Will Not Turn To Stone”–a feature-length hybrid documentary that re-conceptualizes Medusa, one of the most infamous mythic females of all time, through a non-patriarchal lens. Too quick to decapitate, too fearful of turning to stone, we finally look up to meet Medusa’s gaze.

About the Artist: Jesseca Ynez Simmons is a documentary filmmaker and has a special interest in hybridization. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Media Production at the University of Dayton and a Sustainability Scholar for the Hanley Sustainability Institute.

Artist Statement: “I create documentaries that explore the superimposed realm of reality and fantasy; what one experiences with both open and closed eyes. By letting the explicit factual and imaginative qualities of a story graze on the same plane, it is possible to gain something more than if they were treated separately. I aspire to push these boundaries by letting narrative and experimental techniques of cinema bleed into my documentary films.”

Now standing before the world whole and grateful, finding reasons to give thanks for it all. Healing is a process. Grace refines.”

Dayton’s 2020 Fish Fry Guide

January 17, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

This weekend marks the official beginning of Fish Fry Season in Dayton!

Dayton came by its fish fry tradition many years ago.  Many of the European settlers who flocked to the Gem City  and many of those immigrants were Catholic, and the tradition of foregoing the consumption of meat on Fridays made the fish fry a natural evolution.

The fish fry tradition developed even further during the Prohibition era, when fish fries became a way for former alcohol-purveying establishments to stay in business. Many went so far as to conceal their illicit speakeasies beneath the intoxicating aroma of frying fish, offering free or low-cost fish to those who imbibed.

As time moved forward, fish fries became an easy way to avoid meat while enjoying a night out and eating affordably. The tradition grew from there, providing Dayton families an opportunity to go out to dinner without breaking the bank.

Many places in town have fish fries and after much searching, asking and eating, here are some of the best places in the city to catch a fish fry. You’ll also notice Fish Frys aren’t just on Friday anymore!

And, as always, if we’ve forgotten your favorite, please share it with others by posting a comment below or emailing us.

Ever though about doing improv comedy?  Well here’s your chance.  Comedian Karen Jaffe will be leading a Short Form Improv class starting this Sunday from noon -2pm.  This eight week course will end with a final public performance in late March/early April – date tba.

It is an adult class, with a minimum age requirement of 16. The ideal student is someone who wants to learn how to be “in the moment” more. You don’t need to be funny, in fact it’s mostly about learning how to listen and be on a team. According to Karen, “This class is not as much about acting like other classes can be. This is more about communication and interpersonal skills, but it happens to be really fun.”

Short Form means short fun games or exercises that last about 2 to 5 minutes, such as a group doing a collective task (like building a machine with each performer becoming one of the parts) or playing scenes with specific conditions imposed (such as starting every sentence with a particular letter). Performers are encouraged to use their  spontaneity and overcome shyness. The performers often start with a prompt, making up the story as they go along. Although they improvise, the process draws on time-honored principles—the first among them being “yes, and.” Simply put, “yes, and” means performers accept whatever their scene partners do or say as part of the reality of the scene and then build on it with their own contributions. They must be present in the moment, listening carefully, and contributing freely. These skills turn out to be particularly useful in workplaces that rely on adaptability. The television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? is short form improv.

Your instructor, Karen Jaffe, has been making people laugh since the age of six, when she punched an actor from Sesame Street LIVE in a rather sensitive area in front of a theater full of people. However, she didn’t think about making people laugh on purpose until she studied improv at The Second City Conservatory in Chicago. After Chicago, she moved back to her hometown of Dayton, Ohio and tried stand up for the first time. An unnamed number of years later, she is still doing stand up in clubs and venues all over the US and Canada, and she teaches improvisational comedy to stand up comics. Her podcast, “Everybody Dies,” is available on Facebook.

How To Attend:

Wiley’s Comedy Club
101 Pine Street in the Oregon District

8 week class, $100
Sunday 12-2, Jan 19 – March 8

Plan on showing up about 15 minutes early to register prior to the first class.

Winans Riverscape Location Now Open

January 13, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Owner Whitney Wedding

The brand new Winans Chocolates + Coffee opened quietly today at  221 N. Patterson Boulevard, just across from the ball park near RiverScape.  Their actual grand opening will be this Friday.

When I went in to visit there was a line of people ready to get their caffeine fix.  Owner Laurie Reiser shared that she was excited and a little overwhelmed with the new location.  Not that the business was new to her, she had worked with Ben Czaka, another Winans franchise owner, as well as with Caribou Coffee, Peets Coffee and has spent the last five years with Starbucks.

She explained when they bought their first Winans franchise, located at The Greene, the business was already up and running, so creating this one from scratch was a bit more of a process.  With guidance from Winans Corporate and a bit of her own decorating taste,  the store has a rich, elegant and welcoming feeling The chairs just got delivered today, and they are still waiting on some of their table bases.  Their wine permit is pending with the state and Laurie says she hopes to have their wine to sell by Friday.

She says she was “ready for something she could own  and when CareSource came calling, offering up the location I loved the idea of being downtown where so much was happening. While there are a lot of coffee shops on the other end of town, there is nothing around here.” There is even a door that leads directly to the CareSource offices upstairs, which guaranteed them some instant business.

All Dayton area stores are franchises, withe several different owners.  This will be the 21st Winans, all in Ohio, except for one lone location in Iowa.   all chocolates are still made at the Piqua headquarters as is all coffee still roasted there and delivered to the stores. Currently the business, established in the early 1900’s and in its 4th generation of family ownership, still makes all the all chocolates  at the Piqua headquarters and all the coffee is still roasted there and delivered to the stores, according to Winans corporate owner Laurie Winans Reiser.  Coincidently there is a corporate owned Winans that also opened today in Sidney.

Whitney’s franchise stores have partnered with Boosalis Baking to bring in fresh baked goodies each day, along with the chocolates and coffee drinks, frozen hot chocolate, lattes and smoothes.

Yellow Springs Filmmakers Nominated for Academy Award!

January 13, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The announcement was made this morning, American Factory, the documentary about the Chinese company Fuyao, was nominated for Best Documentary.  This is the fourth nomination for Julia Reichert and the second nomination for Steve Bognar.

The film follows the opening of the Fuyao plant, which makes glass for automobiles, that reopened a former plant in Moraine. Led by its self-made billionaire owner, Chairman Cao Dewang, Fuyao brings along 200 experienced Chinese employees to oversee production and hires over 1000 locals.  Working with 1,200 hours of footage — heroically edited by Lindsay Utz — Steve & Julia  have amazing access to a complex economic reality that is touchingly hard on workers.  Wages are low, work expectations high and there is certainly a culture clash between workers from the two nations.

Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar

Netflix acquired the  non-fiction feature out of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary.

According to a Indie wire, “The Participant Media production focuses on the dramatic culture clash when a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand blue-collar Americans. Following its Sundance premiere, the film impressed Barack and Michelle Obama, who launched their Netflix-partnered Higher Ground Productions last spring “to harness the power of storytelling,” as the former U.S. president described it at the time. This marks the first title from Higher Ground to premiere on the streaming service.”

“We are honored and thrilled that Netflix and Higher Ground are teaming up to bring ‘American Factory’ to the world,” said Reichert and Bognar in a statement. “Their energy and enthusiasm is infectious. We’re excited about the national and global conversations we believe this film can spark.”

A Night of Symphonic Hip Hop with Wyclef Jean

January 11, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

The ability of singer, composer, actor, and activist Wyclef Jean to channel raw emotion into one song after another has made him a champion of the world’s people. The music that he has written, performed, and produced — both as a solo superstar and as founder and guiding member of the Fugees — has been a consistently powerful, pop cultural force for over two decades.

In 1996, the Fugees released their monumental album The Score, which inspired notoriously prickly rock critic Robert Christgau to write: “so beautiful and funny, its courage could make you weep.” The album, created in Wyclef’s studio in his uncle’s basement in New Jersey, hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned a trio of smash singles (including their indelible reinvention of Roberta Flack’s 1973 ballad “Killing Me Softly”), and is now certified six times platinum.

After his success with the Fugees, Wyclef Jean launched himself as a producer and solo artist, drawing from an innovative and eclectic palette that included elements of pop, country, folk, disco, Latin, and electronic music. He has been rewarded for his creativity and adventurousness with three Grammy Awards, a spot on the cover of Rolling Stone’s special “Top 50 Hip Hop Players,” and the opportunity to make music with such legends as Michael Jackson, Queen, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kenny Rogers, and Tom Jones. As a solo artist, he has released six albums that have sold nearly nine million copies worldwide.

When Wyclef Jean takes the stage with an orchestra, something primal, powerful, and beautiful happens. Dayton is thrilled to welcome him to center stage at the Schuster for one night of Symphonic Hip Hop with the Dayton Philharmonic!

Indigo Girls Coming to Victoria Theatre Stage!

January 7, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Grammy®- winning duo, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, also known as the INDIGO GIRLS will perform in Dayton on March 3rd at the historic Victoria Theatre.

Twenty years after they began releasing records as the Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have politely declined the opportunity to slow down with age. With a legacy of releases and countless U.S. and international tours behind them, the Indigo Girls have forged their own way in the music business. Selling over 14 million records, they are still going strong. Amy & Emily are the only duo with top 40 titles on the Billboard 200 in the ’80s, ’90s, ’00s, and ’10s.

In 2012, Saliers and her Indigo Girls partner Amy Ray embarked on a bold new chapter, collaborating with a pair of orchestrators to prepare larger-than-life arrangements of their songs to perform with symphonies around the country. The duo found an elusive sonic sweet spot with the project, creating a seamless blend of folk, rock, pop, and classical that elevated their songs to new heights without scarifying any of the emotional intimacy and honesty that have defined their music for decades. Now, after more than 50 performances with symphonies across America, the experiences have finally been captured in all its grandeur on the band’s stunning new album, ‘Indigo Girls Live With The University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra.’

The power of unity, both in music and in life, has been an Indigo Girls calling card ever since they burst into the spotlight with their 1989 self-titled breakout album. Since then, the band has racked up a slew of Gold and Platinum records, taken home a coveted GRAMMY Award®, and earned the respect of high-profile peers and collaborated from Michael Stipe to Joan Baez. NPR’s “Mountain Stage” called the group “one of the finest folk duos of all time” while Rolling Stone said, “they personify what happens when two distinct sensibilities, voices, and worldviews come together to create something transcendentally its own.”

The duo has balanced their long, successful musical career by supporting numerous social causes – the Indigo Girls don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk. Both on and off the stage, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have secured their spot as one of the most legendary musical acts of this generation.

Tickets for the March 3 performance go on sale Friday, Jan. 10 at Ticket Center Stage, by phone at 937-228-3630, (toll-free) 888-228-3630 or online at ticketcenterstage.com.

New Seafood Restaurant Now Open South of Dayton Mall

December 24, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Blue Crab Juicy Seafood opened today on Kingsridge Drive, just behind the Dayton Mall.   I was the second table seated in the eatery by the manager Hery.
Prior to opening this location, he worked at their Indy location.  I asked him what their specialties would be and he said the seafood boils, crab legs and mussels. While the layout is the same as when Max & Erma’s was here, they’ve added quite a few nautical touches to reinforce their seafood menu.

The menu offers quite a few appetizers you’d expect, like hush puppies, fried cheese sticks, onion rings and chicken wings,  and you can also choose from raw or steamed oysters, fried calamari or fried soft shell crabs. Soups include a New England clam chowder, shrimp or crawfish etouffee and a lobster bisque. A house or caesar salad is also an option.

Fried baskets on the menu include shrimp, tilapia, catfish and chicken tenders and all come with french fries (regular, sweet potato or cajun style)  or coleslaw. A house or caesar salad is also an option.

Shrimp is offered head on or for just a couple dollars more can be served head off.  Their is also a kids menu offered.

I started my meal with the fried oysters, which were crispy, with a light batter and juicy inside, served with a tangy cocktail sauce that had just a bit of a bite.

But then I saw the table next to me get their seafood boils delivered and I knew I had to have one!  There are six combinations you can choose from and each comes with one mini cob of corn and two potatoes and your choice of butter, garlic butter, lemon pepper or the juice special, which combines all of the sauces.

I ordered boil A for $25.99 that included:

1/2 lb of black mussels,

1/2 lb shrimp (no head)

1/2 lb snow crab

They bring your bag to the table, shake it up so the sauce gets on everything and then you ca open it up and enjoy.  I thought it was a nice touch that they bring you plastic gloves so you don’t have to get your hands all dirty if you don’t want to.  A big plastic bucket is put in the center of your table for shells and rolls of paper towels are set on each table.  Wet wipes were also provided for a quick clean up at the end.

I couldn’t finish mine, so I just tied up the bag and took the rest home to enjoy later. The menu offers cheesecake for dessert, but that will have to be on another visit.  Beer, wine and cocktails are available.  There are 2 areas available for parties, one area in the back is semi-private (pictured above) the other area seats about 50 upstairs.

General Manager Hery shared, “we can do a buffet style private party with a couple of weeks notice.” He’s excited about this location and says its about twice the size of their Indy restaurant, which just opened in August of this year.  According to their website another Blue Crab Juicy Seafood will be opening soon in the  Mapplewood suburbs of St. Louis, Mo.

And yes, they will be open on Christmas day from noon – 10pm.

FilmDayton Hosts Workshop for Aspiring TV Writers

December 21, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

If you’re an aspiring screenwriter with an interest in television, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of a TV series bible, but if you’ve never actually pitched a show, there’s a chance you’re not 100% clear about what that is. A series bible can be an essential tool in pitching a television show. It’s used as an additional way to explain the tone, look and themes of your pilot.

FilmDayton is hosting a  two-day session that will allow writers to learn how to craft their bible for their Television Series and create a pitch document outlining their show. Through writing exercises, group workshopping, and looking at existing shows and their series bibles — writers will gain a thorough insight into what it takes to get your show ready for the next level.
The last session will include a Q&A skype session with industry experts. Past guests have included writer’s (Leftovers, Westworld, House), Literary Managers and Agents, and Studio Executives.
Our instructor,  Marishia Mukerjee, helped create the very first FilmDayton Festival in 2009 when she was on the FilmDayton Board. She’s been a location manager, producer and filmmaker, and successful writer. Her writing/producing credits include: The Bridge (FX), Heroes Reborn (NBC), Quantico (ABC), Titans (DC Streaming), Shantaram (Apple).
This two day workshop costs $225 and you can sign up online.  FilmDayton members can attend for $175.
