The Court House Ball by The Jane Austen Society of North America

Are you longing for a Ball? Binging Bridgerton? Pining for Pemberley?

You are invited to join the Jane Austen Society – Dayton Region for a winter’s ball in the Old Court House! Imagine yourself in an Austen novel at this elegant event, dancing the Country Dances Jane loved! The elegant Greek Revival Court House is not open to the public, but will welcome you for this special evening of dining and dancing in Regency style.

Join the dancers in the spacious Rotunda, where professional caller Tom Tumbusch will instructs guests in the dance so everyone can participate. Retire to the card room for a round of whist, and bid on a small, curated selection of themed items in the silent auction to benefit the Jane Austen Society.

Savor a three-course meal with a champagne or sparkling cider toast , White Soup, and your choice of Chicken Forestierre, chicken in mushroom wine sauce or vegetarian Portobello Mushroom Stack, accompanied by rice pilaf and green beans in a carrot wrap. A Pastry Tray is included with the coffee and tea service. Cash bar will be available.

The Venue:

The Old Court House, built in 1847, was modeled on the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens, Greece and is considered the nation’s best surviving example of a Greek Revival courthouse. Many U.S. Presidents like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan and William Clinton have all campaigned from the limestone steps. The exterior doors weigh one ton! The interior retains its original faux-grained woodwork, and the curving staircase to the second floor is a photographer’s dream.

COVID -19 Policy: Ticket holders will be required to provide identification and proof of vaccination to enter, either on paper or on a smart device. Masks are not required, but are encouraged when not eating or drinking. The capacity of the venue has been reduced to provide some social distancing. Please weigh your own risk.



Do I need to wear Regency dress?

Regency dress is NOT required, but much admired! You are welcome to wear festive, formal attire from any era.

Is there an age limit to attend?

There is no age limit to attend the Ball, however persons under the age of 18 must have their own ticket and be accompanied by a parent or guardian who also has a valid ticket.

Where do I park?

Metered street parking is available all around Courthouse Square, but there is no charge on Saturday nights. The Arts Garage, near the Schuster Center has covered parking available. Other parking garages are nearby. Guests of the Radisson-Dayton have a parking garage included in their lodging.

The Court House has a lot of stairs. Is there a ramp?

The historic Montgomery County Court House has a LOT of stairs. There is a small lift on the Courthouse Square side of the to bring you to the level of the front door. Once inside, the evening events take place on one level. There is a interior staircase to the second floor, but it is not necessary to go to the upper level.

Is there somewhere to stay nearby?

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Radisson-Dayton for $95 per night until December 9, 2021. This special rate is available for three days before or after the event if you would like to spend the weekend downtown! You may call the hotel at 866-247-5162 and identify yourself as part of the “Jane Austen Society” to get the group rate.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Your printed ticket is not necessary for admittance. You may bring either your printed ticket or your smart device to registration.

Is my Registration or ticket transferable to someone else?

Your ticket may be used by someone other than the named ticket holder if they bring a copy of the printed ticket.

What is the refund policy?

A refund, minus any costs already incurred by JASNA-Dayton on your behalf, will be issued for cancellations received at least seven (7) calendar days prior to the event. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after the deadline. The Reservation coordinator must be notified via e-mail or text for cancellations: tickets@jasnadayton.org or 937-668-3186. If a waitlist has developed you may receive a refund within the seven days of the event if your place can be filled from the waitlist.

We are happy to send a contribution acknowledgement letter for tax declaration purposes if you would like your non-refunded and unused registration fee to become a charitable contribution to JASNA-Dayton.
