DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday night\, October 23rd\, 2025 as we welcome the Gunnar Gidner Trio back to the Whisperz Speakeasy stage! They’ll perform from 6-9pm alongside our Thursday night $10 Martini Time offered all night long every Thursday! \nGunnar Gidner is saxophonist based in Cincinnati\, OH. He has studied music at CCM and UMKC conservatories of music. He has performed on stage with Bobby Watson\, Joel Frahm\, Eric Alexander\, Steve Davis\, Mike Wade\, Bob Bowman\, and more. Gunnar has a strong love for Swing\, Be-Bop\, and Hard-Bop music from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. He also plays a variety of music\, all the way from Bossa Nova to Funk & Rock. \nHe will be joined by bassist Peter Gemus and drummer Jim Leslie. Peter Gemus grew up in New Jersey before moving to Cincinnati\, OH to attend the UC College Conservatory of Music. During his time in Cincinnati\, he played with and learned from many of the great musicians in that area. In 2020\, Peter relocated to Los Angeles where he completed his Bachelor of Music at the USC Thornton School of Music. He keeps an active schedule as both a performer and teacher. \nJames Leslie is Lecturer at the University of Dayton\, where he coordinates the percussion and jazz areas. James is the drummer for the Blue Wisp Big Band (replacingthe late John von Ohlen in 2017)\, the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra\, and Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers. He has performed with The Stan Kenton Alumni Band\, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra\, The Harry James Orchestra\, as well as artists such as Randy Brecker\, Harry Allen\, James Carter\, Boots Randolph\, Bobby Watson\, and Terell Stafford. \nPlease remember\, we do not accept reservations. DESCRIPTION:Wright Memorial Public Library welcomes award-winning journalist and columnist Mike Sakal as he shares highlights from his book\, Dayton Hungarians: Their Stories\, Glories\, and Folklore\, a comprehensive history about the Hungarian community in Dayton\, Ohio – one of Dayton’s largest ethnic groups – spanning from the late 1890s to the present day. \nThe book\, which was a history preservation project sponsored and supported by the Old Troy Pike Community Church (formerly the Hungarian Evangelical and Reformed Church of Dayton\, Ohio)\, features many stories about Dayton’s former Hungarian neighborhoods and families\, including his own\, on the city’s West Side and Old North Dayton. \n“It was important to preserve the legacy of [the] Dayton Hungarian community as all three of its churches now are closed\,” said Sakal. “I’m hoping that my book inspires historians of Dayton’s other ethnic groups to write similar books.” \nSakal\, a second-generation American Hungarian\, was a sports journalist for the Dayton Daily News. After his article about the Dakota Street Football Team\, which existed on Dayton’s West Side from 1922 to 1941\, made an impression on the Dayton Hungarian community\, he began researching photographs of the neighborhood restaurants where the team celebrations took place. \nCommunity interest in his books has led to a partnership with the National Park Service for a walking tour of the former West Side Hungarian neighborhood along the National Aviation Heritage Trail and other projects that document the imprint Hungarian families left on Dayton. \nCopies of Dayton Hungarians: Their Stories\, Glories\, and Folklore will be available for sale following the program\, along with a book signing. \nFor details about this event and other library programs\, please visit wrightlibrary.org/calendar or call Wright Library at (937) 294-7171.

Much like the artists who have inspired him\, from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan\, and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter he most admires\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul combines deeply personal experiences with social issues to create provocative works that feel both timely and timeless. Born and raised in Maine\, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and became a regular on the city’s open-mic circuit in the evenings. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition\, he caught the attention of folk legend Bill Morrissey\, who produced his indie album “Say Something” in 1993. This led to a seven-album contract with Rounder Records and the release of “Stories” in 1994. \nHis songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award-winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). Through a steady succession of his own albums — a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans.
