SUMMARY:Beyond the Swidden: Mesoamerican Agricultural Practices Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:The final presentation in the Archaeological Institute of America Dayton Society’s 2025-2026 Lecture Series presented by Dr. Shanti Morell-Hart\, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology/Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University in Providence\, Rhode Island. \nHow do we understand human negotiations of variable ecologies from the perspective of deep time\, and identify historical shifts in these dynamics? How does such research help us to understand societal “collapse” as it has been framed by so many scholars (often outside of historical ecology and archaeology)? What cautionary tales or routes to innovation can we draw from these understandings? \nIn this talk Dr. Morell-Hart will address recent studies in Mesoamerica on ancient agriculture\, as well as resilient features of human practice in negotiating tropical landscapes. She will focus on several areas where she has carried out archaeological research in Guatemala\, Mexico\, and Honduras\, with an emphasis on the analysis of plant residues and consider: How can we negotiate productivity and sustainability (through many cultural and natural definitions)? What alternate farming solutions can we offer\, based in archaeological research and understandings of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK)? \nShe will also address contemporary issues in Mesoamerica\, from the home garden\, to the milpa\, to the forest. What new agricultural strategies in tropical Mesoamerica have been inspired– or discouraged– by ancient practices? About 1 in 9 Americans ages 65 and older has Alzheimer’s\, and the Tri-state has more than 151\,000 individuals either living with dementia or caring for a loved one who does. \n“For more than a decade\, the Queen City has stood beside us in our mission to support Cincinnati’s aging community through Mimosas for Memories\,” said Dr. Christian Gausvik\, MD\, founder and board president of the Giving Voice Foundation. “This event is more than a fundraiser. DESCRIPTION:The Spring rendition of the Girls on the Run 5k will return to Wright State University.  Girls on the Run is an incredible program that inspires girls to be joyful\, healthy and confident using a fun\, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.  Girls on the Run strives for a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.\nAs many of you know\, our Girls on the Run participants traditionally run alongside an adult Running Buddy. The job of the Running Buddy is to provide one-on-one support and encouragement to their girl as she takes on a great challenge. YOU can help our girls find their happy pace and share in the magic of helping her cross the finish line.  The race day give-away is a Girls On The Run branded reusable bag and is first come first served – so don’t wait to sign up!\nBack this year\, we are continuing a Fun Run.  The half-mile fun run will start and finish at the same start finish line as the 5K.  It will start at 12:30pm. This race will not be timed\, but we will run the clock for participants to see their time.  It is open to anyone not quite ready to take on the entire 5K – and a great opportunity for younger siblings and friends!\n  \nWhen: Saturday\, April 25\, 2026. 5k at 1:00pm.
