SUMMARY:Curtis Barnes\, Sr.\, Dayton Icon Exhibit Opens
DESCRIPTION:A painter and educator\, Curtis Barnes\, Sr. was a longtime fixture of Dayton’s art scene. His bold\, colorful\, experimental paintings are a distinctive blend of naturalism and abstraction. They frequently include self-portraits and portraiture depicting the people in his life. His influence is still felt today among his students and in the African American Visual Arts Guild\, which he co-founded with artist “Bing” Davis in 1992.  He was recognized for his artistic contribution and presented with the “Paul Laurence Dunbar Humanitarian Award” in 1994 and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Ohio Arts Council in 2008. \nThis exhibition comes on the 90th anniversary of his birth and is a celebration of Barnes’ life and art. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the closing Gallery Reception of the 31st Annual “The View” Juried Landscape Exhibition\, showcasing both contemporary and traditional approaches to landscape art. This prestigious annual exhibition is open to Ohio artists working in any medium and explores topics including nature\, environmental themes and world issues. This year\, 107 individual artists submitted a total of 300 pieces. From these the juror\, Liz Maugans\, selected 60 pieces representing 58 artists for the exhibition. Maugans also selected the winners of awards totaling $1\,100. Three $100 People’s Choice Awards will be presented by the Joan W. McCoy Memorial Art Fund at 2:00 p.m. during the closing gallery reception.

DESCRIPTION:The Handbell Choir of St. Augustine Lutheran Church in Gotha\, Germany embarks on its sixth tour in Ohio\, ending with a concert at Epiphany on SATURDAY\, AUGUST 2\, at 7 p.m. in the Far Hills Sanctuary.  \nThis ensemble was founded in 1987 through the efforts of Epiphany Lutheran in Dayton and Pastor Larry Hoffsis and his wife Cindy\, who travelled to West Germany and brought sets of bells through the Iron Curtain. The current choir consists of 15 youth and adults\, ringing five+ octaves of handbells.  \nThis concert is free and open to the public with a free-will offering accepted.
