SUMMARY:Shot Heard Round the World 19 April 1775
DESCRIPTION:Wright Memorial Public Library in partnership with the Oakwood Historical Society will host local historian Andrew Lloyd as he presents “Shot Heard Round the World 19 April 1775.” Lloyd’s talk is part of the Far Hills Speaker Series and addresses the local impact and local heroes of the American Revolution as part of the America250 celebration. \nGuests can attend in person at Wright Library or virtually by registering at wrightlibrary.org/calendar. \nFollowing the program\, all are invited to an America250 tree planting at the neighboring Oakwood Historical Society’s Long-Romspert Homestead\, 1947 Far Hills Avenue\, Oakwood\, Ohio. \nAbout the Program \nTheir families originated from England\, Wales\, Scotland\, Ireland\, Germany and more. They fought in the American Revolution – a cause that took them from New England to Virginia\, the Southern Campaign of General Greene and the battlefields that brought forth the United States of America. Veterans of Valley Forge\, Brandywine\, and Yorktown lie at rest in Montgomery County\, Ohio – a county named after General Montgomery of the Continental Army and adjacent to Greene County\, after another Continental General\, Nathaniel Greene. \nThis talk looks at those veterans of the American Revolution\, their links to Montgomery County\, Oakwood\, and Centerville\, and their roles in the war that changed the Continent. It aims to put some context into the incredible sacrifices and achievements of those individuals and bring to the fore anecdotes on their road to Ohio. \nPresented by Andrew Lloyd. In partnership with the Oakwood Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Wright Library to Host Author Gilbert King
DESCRIPTION:Wright Memorial Public Library is pleased to present a special evening of conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King on Friday\, November 7 at 5:00 p.m. to kick off the 2025 Dayton Literary Peace Prize weekend. Wright Library’s Community Room seating capacity is 80\, so please arrive early to ensure your seat. The program will also be livestreamed through Zoom\, with a link available at wrightlibrary.org. \nKnown for his narrative nonfiction exploring issues of civil rights and injustice\, King was a 2013 runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for his New York Times bestseller\, Devil in the Grove\, which also garnered the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. \nThe Dayton Literary Peace Prize\, inaugurated in 2006\, is the first and only annual U.S. literary award recognizing the power of the written word to promote peace. “Gilbert King’s work embodies the spirit of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. We are honored to host him for what is certain to be an insightful conversation\,” said Wright Library Director Kristi Hale. \nHis latest book\, Bone Valley: A True Story of Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida\, was published in October 2025. Bone Valley is the result of King’s multi-year investigation into the story of Leo Schofield of Lakeland\, Fla.\, who was convicted of his wife’s murder in 1988 after a flawed investigation and inadequate defense – despite maintaining his innocence. Schofield served over 30 years and was declared innocent\, and released\, in 2024.  King also produces and hosts a multi-part narrative podcast\, also called Bone Valley\, about the case\, which is currently in its third season. \nKing has written about race\, civil rights\, and the death penalty for the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and The Atlantic\, and he was a 2019-2020 fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars at the New York Public Library. King’s earlier books include The Execution of Willie Francis (2008)\, and Beneath a Ruthless Sun (2018). He lives in Brooklyn. \nThe November 7th author talk at Wright Library is made possible with support from the Wright Memorial Library Foundation and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation.

SUMMARY:DAYTON HUNGARIANS: STORIES\, GLORIES\, AND FOLKLORE
DESCRIPTION:Wright Memorial Public Library welcomes award-winning journalist and columnist Mike Sakal as he shares highlights from his book\, Dayton Hungarians: Their Stories\, Glories\, and Folklore\, a comprehensive history about the Hungarian community in Dayton\, Ohio – one of Dayton’s largest ethnic groups – spanning from the late 1890s to the present day. \nThe book\, which was a history preservation project sponsored and supported by the Old Troy Pike Community Church (formerly the Hungarian Evangelical and Reformed Church of Dayton\, Ohio)\, features many stories about Dayton’s former Hungarian neighborhoods and families\, including his own\, on the city’s West Side and Old North Dayton. \n“It was important to preserve the legacy of [the] Dayton Hungarian community as all three of its churches now are closed\,” said Sakal. “I’m hoping that my book inspires historians of Dayton’s other ethnic groups to write similar books.” \nSakal\, a second-generation American Hungarian\, was a sports journalist for the Dayton Daily News. After his article about the Dakota Street Football Team\, which existed on Dayton’s West Side from 1922 to 1941\, made an impression on the Dayton Hungarian community\, he began researching photographs of the neighborhood restaurants where the team celebrations took place. \nCommunity interest in his books has led to a partnership with the National Park Service for a walking tour of the former West Side Hungarian neighborhood along the National Aviation Heritage Trail and other projects that document the imprint Hungarian families left on Dayton. \nCopies of Dayton Hungarians: Their Stories\, Glories\, and Folklore will be available for sale following the program\, along with a book signing. \nFor details about this event and other library programs\, please visit wrightlibrary.org/calendar or call Wright Library at (937) 294-7171.
