SUMMARY:Shot Heard Round the World 19 April 1775
DESCRIPTION:Wright Memorial Public Library in partnership with the Oakwood Historical Society will host local historian Andrew Lloyd as he presents “Shot Heard Round the World 19 April 1775.” Lloyd’s talk is part of the Far Hills Speaker Series and addresses the local impact and local heroes of the American Revolution as part of the America250 celebration. \nGuests can attend in person at Wright Library or virtually by registering at wrightlibrary.org/calendar. \nFollowing the program\, all are invited to an America250 tree planting at the neighboring Oakwood Historical Society’s Long-Romspert Homestead\, 1947 Far Hills Avenue\, Oakwood\, Ohio. \nAbout the Program \nTheir families originated from England\, Wales\, Scotland\, Ireland\, Germany and more. They fought in the American Revolution – a cause that took them from New England to Virginia\, the Southern Campaign of General Greene and the battlefields that brought forth the United States of America. Veterans of Valley Forge\, Brandywine\, and Yorktown lie at rest in Montgomery County\, Ohio – a county named after General Montgomery of the Continental Army and adjacent to Greene County\, after another Continental General\, Nathaniel Greene. \nThis talk looks at those veterans of the American Revolution\, their links to Montgomery County\, Oakwood\, and Centerville\, and their roles in the war that changed the Continent. It aims to put some context into the incredible sacrifices and achievements of those individuals and bring to the fore anecdotes on their road to Ohio. \nPresented by Andrew Lloyd. In partnership with the Oakwood Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Swidden: Mesoamerican Agricultural Practices Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:The final presentation in the Archaeological Institute of America Dayton Society’s 2025-2026 Lecture Series presented by Dr. Shanti Morell-Hart\, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology/Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University in Providence\, Rhode Island. \nHow do we understand human negotiations of variable ecologies from the perspective of deep time\, and identify historical shifts in these dynamics? How does such research help us to understand societal “collapse” as it has been framed by so many scholars (often outside of historical ecology and archaeology)? What cautionary tales or routes to innovation can we draw from these understandings? \nIn this talk Dr. Morell-Hart will address recent studies in Mesoamerica on ancient agriculture\, as well as resilient features of human practice in negotiating tropical landscapes. She will focus on several areas where she has carried out archaeological research in Guatemala\, Mexico\, and Honduras\, with an emphasis on the analysis of plant residues and consider: How can we negotiate productivity and sustainability (through many cultural and natural definitions)? What alternate farming solutions can we offer\, based in archaeological research and understandings of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK)? \nShe will also address contemporary issues in Mesoamerica\, from the home garden\, to the milpa\, to the forest. What new agricultural strategies in tropical Mesoamerica have been inspired– or discouraged– by ancient practices? What additional strategies might we consider in an era of radical environmental change? \nThis lecture is scheduled to take place in person in the Science Center Auditorium (SC 114) at The University of Dayton. \nFor a campus map with building and parking information visit https://udayton.edu/map/ \nThanks to the Archaeological Institute of America’s Lecture Program and its Dayton Society members this lecture is free and open to the public.
