SUMMARY:36th Annual Dayton Area Works on Paper Juried Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Works on Paper is a juried exhibition created for artists living within a 40-mile radius of Dayton\, Ohio. This annual exhibition features two-and three-dimensional works of art on or of paper. Artist awards totaling $1\,100 will be selected by the juror James Pate. Gallery visitors will select a People’s Choice Award made possible through the Joan W. McCoy Memorial Art Fund. The exhibition will be on display from January 20 to February 28\, 2026 with a closing reception on Saturday\, February 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. \nAbout the Juror: James Pate is an award-winning artist\, born in Birmingham\, Alabama\, and raised in Cincinnati\, Ohio. His work has been exhibited in a number of galleries and museums\, including the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis\, TN\, and the DuSable Museum in Chicago\, IL. He has received countless commissions from a diverse array of entities\, including the Duke Energy Convention Center\, Cincinnati\, Oh\, and the prestigious law firm\, Wilmer Hale\, Washington\, DC.

DESCRIPTION:Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book\, The Conjuring of America: Mojos\, Mermaids\, Medicine\, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic\, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women\, in secrecy and subterfuge\, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. This book is a love letter to the real magic Black women used\, their herbs\, food\, textiles\, song\, and dance\, used to sow rebellion\, freedom\, and hope.
