Also on the island is a deformed slave, Caliban, who at first was raised by Prospero until he tried to rape Miranda. When Prospero discovers that Antonio is on a ship nearby, he starts up a storm to cause the ship to sink. Antonio, Alonso, Gonzalo, and Alonso’s two brothers, Sebastian and Ferdinand, are stuck on the island, and Prospero starts to separate them. Caliban allies himself with Stephano and Trinculo, servants of Alonso, in an attempt to overthrow Prospero. Prospero gets Ferdinand and Miranda to fall in love, but he keeps Ferdinand as a servant to make their courting more difficult. Antonio and Sebastian plot to kill Alonso, but Ariel appears as a harpy to thwart them.

A FilmDayton Fest for You (+ Ticket Contest!)

August 21, 2012 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

Major film buffs likely already know about the FilmDayton Festival. Now in its fourth year, the fest has been a celebration of great film talent and aspiring filmmakers from the region and across the world. But maybe you don’t know about it yet. Maybe this is the year you’re going to find out what it’s all about in the way that’s best for you. Here are some ways to check it out.

Looking for comedy? Start with Flick My Clip – a collection of comedy shorts and sketches with Ryan Singer. Film buffs and history lovers will want to watch the Sundance Selection These Amazing Shadows featuring film archivist George Willeman. Those who want to stay on up with ‘the best of the fests’ will enjoy Trash Dance and Tchoupitoulas and the highly-controversial Compliance. To explore what’s happening in international films and have a discussion about how multiculturalism is impacting our region – don’t miss Madrina Films Presents. Looking for a more local connection in films that are taking the fest circuit by storm – enjoy The Wonderland Express or Redlegs to see a lot of Dayton folk in the credits.

And that’s just the major screenings! Before every feature you’ll get to enjoy entertaining shorts from local students and FilmDayton-affiliated educational programming. Two (or three) films for the price of one plus great Q&A after each screening.

But the fest is more than just an awesome weekend at the movies with the filmmakers. Learn more about the process at great workshops where professionals provide insights and share experiences about everything in the industry from the story pitch to the soundtrack and film on the Web and video for business. It’s a weekend of films, workshops, parties, and more.

New this year: FilmDayton launches the inaugural FilmDayton Awards. The capstone event of Saturday night, this event is going to be huge fun and very special. Three very cool awards (designed by Susan Cannon and reminiscent of the Muybridge horse) will be given out to three wonderful local filmmakers. Dave Ackels is getting the “Innovation Award” for his visionary filmmaking, John Mays is getting the “Key Award” for his boundless, endless generosity to the film community, and Julia Reichert is getting the “Filmmaker Award” for her amazing body of work. There will be laughs, tears, surprises and more… A true celebration of quality films, filmmakers and our creative community.

A “don’t miss” event that’s fun for filmmakers and audiences alike is the kick-off event Pitch It! Story-tellers and screenwriters have two minutes to pitch their idea for the next big movie to a panel of industry experts. The audience cheers them on and the pros offer great feedback. At the end of the night, one winner comes away with a cash prize and screenwriting software from Final Draft. A great way to get in the mood for the fest!

There’s way too much happening at the FilmDayton Festival to list here – parties, films, workshops, screenLESS screenings, awards, and a lot of great conversation. If you’ve not been before – 2012 is the year to check out the FilmDayton Festival. All-Access Passes are available to enjoy the full weekend for only $75. Individual events are $9 (Pitch It!, Saturday night Filmmaker Meet-and-Greet Party, WYSO Presents Community Voices all $5/each). Get your tickets now.

Quick Guide For Every Taste:

A film buff? Start at Pitch It! to hear some great new movie storylines, enjoy These Amazing Shadows followed by a workshop with George Willeman on film preservation, cheer on local filmmakers at the FilmDayton Awards, and see what’s on the international circuit at Madrina Films Presents.

A filmmaker? Pitch your story at Pitch It! for a chance to win cash and Final Draft software, catch as many films as possible and take advantage of the Q&A that follows each one, make plans to attend the FilmDayton Awards and the Filmmaker Meet and Greet Party Saturday night.

Always looking for What’s Next? Start at Pitch It! on Friday, head over Flick My Clip for comedy shorts by current and up-and-coming comics and filmmakers, and sit in on a couple workshops that are showing how film and video is adapting with the times (Emerging Fields: The Web Series and Technology, Business and Video)

Is Music your passion? See Trash Dance on Saturday, sit in on the Music and Movies workshop on Sunday and end your weekend at Tchoupitoulas.

Want raw, intense experiences out of your movies? Hope you’re ready for Compliance on Friday night. Take a break and come back Sunday for Redlegs.

Want a uniquely Dayton Experience? Well – then you have to attend the WHOLE festival. Every film, workshop and special event has a local connection. Of course, you won’t want to miss The Wonderland Express – a sci-fi feeling dramedy and the only feature of the festival that was shot entirely in the region with a 100% local cast/crew.

THE NEON Announces Benefit with AMELIE

August 21, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal 5 Comments

Hello Everyone,

In October, THE NEON plans to shut down for a few days in order to install new digital projectors. Though we’d love to keep our 35mm projectors running, we’re being “forced” by the industry to make this change in order to stay in business. Within the coming year, bigger distributors will stop making 35mm prints, and their titles (like THE KING’S SPEECH, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, MOONRISE KINGDOM, etc.) keep us in business…and subsequently allow us to play smaller gems like THE KID WITH A BIKE and I AM LOVE.

In addition to exploring the options and trying to obtain an understanding of the new technology (this has been a big learning curve for me), there comes the challenge of paying for this new equipment. The cost will be approximately $140,000. We will be able to borrow some of this, and we have some money saved…but we have about a $25,000 gap.

The multiplexes are obtaining financial assistance from distributors to make these costly changes, but for us to maintain our community-driven mission (which includes film festivals, assisting local artists and organizations with special screenings, etc.), these programs don’t work for us.

On October 14, we will have a benefit at THE NEON to assist with the transition to digital projection. We will screen the film AMELIE on 35mm, and 3 of Dayton’s best restaurants will provide appetizers – Meadowlark, Coco’s Bistro & Roost and Heidelberg Distributors have given us a couple cases of wine.   In addition, we’ll hold a small auction of film-related items with Dayton roots. (Martin Sheen has given us some fun items, Allison Janney is on-board to provide us with something, and J. Todd Anderson will donate a storyboard from one of the Coen Brothers’ films to auction. And there’s more to come!)

Here’s our benefit announcement that you might start seeing around town:

Though we’ll be sad to see our 35mm projectors go away, we’re excited about some of the changes that will come along with our new equipment. THE NEON will finally be able to offer hearing assisted devices! We’ll also be able to occasionally offer screenings with closed captions for the hearing impaired (and I know some of our customers prefer subtitles when accents are hard to discern). We’ve got lots of options, and we’re looking forward to the new opportunities.

Within the next couple weeks, we will have a live website for purchasing tickets to our benefit…but I wanted you to know that tickets will go on sale at our box office on Wednesday, August 22.
THE INDIE LOVER Ticket is $100 – This ticket gets you your first beer or wine, appetizers from 3 great restaurants, and the screening of AMELIE.
THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER Ticket is $150 – This ticket comes with unlimited beer and wine, delicious appetizers, the screening of AMELIE and 1 Entry into our drawing for Naming Rights of our large auditorium. We think it will be a fun night!

Thanks for taking the time to read through the lengthy post!

My regular newsletter will arrive later this week.

We’ll see you soon at the movies.
All the best,
Jonathan

Obama America and Fatboy Slim at Rave Cinemas + TICKET CONTEST

August 20, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Hello Dayton! Back to  school has started and the summer blockbusters are starting to slow down.  However, there are still plenty of special events to come see at Rave Cinemas. Now, on with the  show…

Opening 08/24 at  Dayton South, 2016 Obama’s America,  this film takes audiences on  a gripping visual journey into the heart of the world’s most powerful office to reveal the struggle of whether one man’s past will redefine America over the  next four years. The film examines the question, ‘If Obama wins a second term,  where will we be in 2016?’

Across the globe and in America, people in 2008 hungered for a leader who would unite and lift us from economic turmoil and war. True to American ideals, they invested their hope in a new kind of president, Barack Obama. What they didn’t know is that Obama is a man with a past, and in powerful ways that past defines him–who he is, how he thinks, and where he intends to take America and the world. Immersed in exotic locales across four continents, best-selling author Dinesh D’Souza races against time to find answers to Obamas past and reveal where America will be in 2016. During this journey he discovers how Hope and Change became radically misunderstood, and identifies new flashpoints for hot wars in mankind’s greatest struggle. The journey moves quickly over the arc of the old colonial empires, into Americas empire of liberty, and we see the unfolding realignment of nations and the shape of the global future. Emotionally engaging, 2016 Obamas America will make you confounded and cheer as you discover the mysteries and answers to your greatest aspirations and worst fears.

Love him or hate him, you don’t know him.

Coming Up in Dayton Theatre: Aug 17 – Sept 9

August 16, 2012 By Sarah Caplan Leave a Comment

Welcome back again. After my forward-looking glance last time at what fall will bring, I feel like I was rewarded by a small sneak-peek of autumnal weather. It was glorious and refreshing. I got to see Free Shakespeare!’s production of The Merchant of Venice on an absolutely perfect evening. Thank you, cooperative weather! And now, my little tour of the happenings in our local theatre scene.

Please Help!

The Dayton Theatre Guild’s season opener Opus is in desperate need of at least two crew members! The dates of the show are August 24th through September 9th. Being a crew member is an excellent entre’ into the scene. Plus, in this case, you get the added bonus of being a hero so everyone will laud you and be very happy to see you!

Coming Soon!

Musical Chairs

Managing Maxine

The Human Race Theatre Company

The Skinny: A midwest premier, this show is a tale of “septuagenarian sexiness and matronly merriment”, featuring Broadway actress Jana Robbins as the titular Maxine, a woman who may have just found real love for the first time in her life. Tickets: Reserving tickets in advance is highly recommended and may be done by calling the Brookville Flower Shop at 937-833-3531

YOUR SISTER’S SISTER Starts Friday at THE NEON

August 15, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

We’re changing things up this weekend! If you haven’t seen BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD – one of the best reviewed films of the year – then you should hurry down to THE NEON. Thursday will be your last chance to see it with us. On Friday, we will open YOUR SISTER’S SISTER – the new film from Lynn Shelton. In addition, we’ll hold THE INTOUCHABLES…it had a terrific weekend.

Synopsis for YOUR SISTER’S SISTER: “Your Sister’s Sister is a new comedy about romance, grief and sibling rivalry. A year after his brother Tom’s death, Jack is still struggling emotionally. When he makes a scene at a memorial party, Tom’s best friend Iris offers up her family cabin on an island in the Pacific Northwest so Jack can seek catharsis in solitude. Once there, however, he runs into Iris’ sister Hannah who is reeling from the abrupt end of a seven-year relationship and finds solace in Tom’s unexpected presence. A blurry evening of drinking concludes with an awkward sexual incident, made worse by Iris’ sudden presence at the cabin the next morning. A twisted tale of ever-complicated relationships is set in motion with raw, hilarious and emotional performances from the all-star cast.” (taken from IFC Films) Visit the official website.

August 13, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Good day Dayton! This is the first of many blogs to come where we will inform you about special content that we will be showing at Rave Cinema Dayton South.  We show more than just the latest Hollywood Blockbuster!  I look forward to chatting and reading the comments with you all.  Now, on with the show…

Rave Cinemas Dayton South and Huber Heights is proud to present a very special showing of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on August 16th at 8pm. This will be for one night only as Michael J. Nelson (head writer of the original series from 1993-1999), Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett of RiffTrax.com bring their outside the box sense of humors for hilarious commentary on a terrible movie. These three are known for their sarcastic and gut wrenching shots at science fiction B-movies. Their peanut gallery style commenting is the only thing that can make the movie more tolerable! During this special event they will be reviewing “Manos: The Hands of Fate” which is widely known as being one of the worst movies to ever be made and brought up to a cult status just for being on Mystery Science Theater 3000. This is the only time this crazy funny feature will be on the big screen.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MckN7UGFINE’]

Also showing, due to such popular demand, an encore showing of Singing in the Rain! This lovable classic will be back on August 22nd at 7pm. Showing for the 60th anniversary and presented by NCM Fathom and Turner Classic Movies, the feature has been digitally re-mastered and looks fabulous on the big screen. Known to many as one of the best musical movies ever made, not only do you get to see the original stars, but Debbie Reynolds will treat viewers to a special behind the scenes interview with NCM host Robert Osborne. Synopsis; When Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) makes the transition from silent film to a musical, he meets Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), who is an aspiring actress and brought in for her ability to sing. Don falls for Kathy and a heartfelt romance blossoms.

International Sensation THE INTOUCHABLES Opens Friday at THE NEON

August 8, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

It’s time to move along. Two films that made our summer one to remember will end their runs on Thursday. If you still need to see (or maybe for a 2nd or 3rd time) MOONRISE KINGDOM or TO ROME WITH LOVE, Thursday will be your last chance to see them at THE NEON. On Friday, we will finally open a film that many of you have been waiting for – THE INTOUCHABLES. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD will stick around for another week. (for remaining showtimes for this week, visit our site at neonmovies.com)

Synopsis for THE INTOUCHABLES: “An irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, trust and human possibility, The Intouchables has broken box office records in its native France and across Europe. Based on a true story of friendship between a handicap millionaire (Francois Cluzet) and his street smart ex-con caretaker (Omar Sy), The Intouchables depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have nothing in common.” (taken from The Weinstein Co.)  Visit the official website.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsPHXVnt27g’]

Air Force Veteran Jachlin Williams will host one more screening of the new, award-winning documentary THE INVISIBLE WAR at THE NEON – Thursday, August 16 at 7:30. “A groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of our country’s most shameful and best-kept secrets, THE INVISIBLE WAR reveals the epidemic of rape within the U.S. Military. Today, a female soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. Tracing the powerfully emotional stories of several young veterans, the film reveals the systemic cover-up of the crimes they have suffered and follows their struggles to rebuild their lives and careers. These screenings are part of a campaign to tell survivors of sexual military trauma that they are not invisible.” This screenings is free. Tickets will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis – one ticket per person on the day of the screening. (Sunday’s emotionally charged screening was wonderfully received. Please spread the word.)

The Greater Dayton Association of Black Journalists will host a community discussion about the Anthony Sowell serial murder case Saturday, August 18 at 11am at THE NEON. A discussion of the societal conditions that allowed the murders to go unnoticed will be discussed following a preview of the documentary ELEVEN. The film is about the Imperial Avenue killings in Cleveland’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood in 2009. Stanley Donaldson, a reporter for The Cleveland Plain Dealer, will be on hand along with co-director Khalil Pedizsai. Donaldson wrote newspaper articles about the murders. He is also a producer for the documentary. Please help us spread the word about this free community discussion.

Very soon, I’ll be able to give you details about our benefit on October 14. More and more details are slowly coming together (here’s a late-breaking detail…MARTIN SHEEN has just provided us with a few incredible items for our auction). This benefit will help us as we transition from 35mm to digital projection – a costly but necessary endeavor.

Tickets are on sale for FilmDayton Festival – set for August 24-26. Take a look at their SITE and see what they have to offer. In addition to film screenings at THE NEON, the festival will offer workshops and special events around town. This is their 4th Annual Fest…let’s help them make it a big success.

And speaking of festivals, The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival has a fresh new website. HERE it is! It’s our biggest and best line-up yet, and we’re now in the process of securing guest artists to attend the festival. The 7th Annual Fest is set for Sept. 28-30. Dayton Playhouse presents ‘Side by Side by Sondheim’

August 8, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Dayton Playhouse will present Side by Side by Sondheim as its 2012-2013 Season extra September 7 – 16. This energetic musical, highlighting the most endearing of Sondheim’s early work, will be directed by Brian Sharp with musical direction by Ron Kindell, both of whom won acclaim for last season’s sold-out production of The Sound of Music.

Side by Side by Sondheim will feature local actor Saul Caplan as the master of ceremonies and vocalists Carol Chatfield and Bonnie Dobbs of Kettering, Kathy Clark of Centerville, Laura Bloomingdale of Beavercreek, Shawn Hooks of Dayton, and David Moyer of Springboro. Nancy Perrin and Bryon Dobbs are featured pianists.

When, in 1976, the owners of a small, struggling theater asked Stephen Sondheim for permission to produce a musical revue of his work as a fundraiser, the composer said he “couldn’t think of anything more boring.” However, Sondheim underestimated the appeal of his music, and when Side by Side by Sondheim opened, it charmed its initial audiences and caught the eye of a young Cameron Macintosh, who moved it to the Mermaid theater in London, where it became one of his first successful productions.

Widely produced, and popular with regional groups, Side by Side by Sondheim is often given credit for solidifying Sondheim’s reputation beyond London and New York theaters. This “boring” show has enjoyed numerous revivals, five Tony nominations, and over 800 performances on three continents.

Shawn Hooks and David Moyer in 'Side by Side'

Side by Side by Sondheim  is unique in that it is the only revue of Sondheim’s work to include music from West Side Story and Gypsy, shows for which Sondheim wrote the lyrics, but did not compose the music. It is also one of the only places for audiences to hear some of his lesser-known works such as “Love is in the Air,” which was initially intended to be the opening number for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, but was replaced with the well known “Comedy Tonight.”

Other musicals highlighted in the revue include the popular Company, Follies, and A Little Night Music, as well as rarely performed shows such as Evening Primrose, Anyone Can Whistle, and Pacific Overtures. The show features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, music by  Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers, and Jule Styne, and Continuity by Ned Sherrin. It was produced on Broadway by Harold Prince in association with Ruth Mitchell.

Side by Side by Sondheim opens September 7th and runs through September 16th, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, and Sundays at 2PM. Tickets, priced at $17.00 for adults and $15.00 for students and seniors, are available at www.DaytonPlayhouse.com or through the Dayton Playhouse box office at 937-424-8477.

Poet and activist Christine Leclerc at Antioch College

August 7, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Christine Leclerc

Vancouver-based poet and activist Christine Leclerc will read her new works and present a workshop on craft at Antioch College August 16 and 18. While the reading and workshop are free and open to the public, registration is required for the workshop, for which seating is limited to 12 participants.

Leclerc will read her poetry at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 16, in Olive Kettering Library. She will present the workshop “Energy, Collaboration, and Form,” from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, in McGregor Hall, Room 130. To register for the workshop, send an email to [email protected].

Leclerc is the author of Counterfeit (Capilano University Editions, 2008) and an editor of The Enpipe Line (Creekstone Press, 2012), 70,000+ km of poetry written in resistance to the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal. She studied creative writing at the University of British Columbia, and her poetry, fiction and essays have appeared in magazines and journals across North America. She has been known to direct community theater in corporate headquarters and board oil rigs at sea.

The three-hour poetry workshop will focus on energy, collaboration and form. Participants will discuss poetic engagement with energy issues and dissect the formal or structural elements of these poems. The shared vocabulary generated by this exercise equips participants with the ability to collaborate on a new poetic form or structure. The guided writing that caps off this workshop allows participants to explore the results of their collaboration.

The Writing Institute at Antioch College sponsors Leclerc’s visit to Yellow Springs. The institute supports Antioch College’s mission and Learning Outcomes by providing members of the College community with opportunities for focused study of the writing craft. In the last year, the institute has sponsored visits and workshops by poet Ann Filemyr (A Healer’s Diary, Sunstone Press, 2012), writer and artist Nikki McClure (To the Market, To the Market, Abrams Books, 2011), journalists Liz F. Kay and John-John Williams (The Baltimore Sun), local author and Wright State professor Jeffery Alan John (A Bird in Your Hand, Lucid Books, 2010), and National Book Award winner Jaimy Gordon (Lord of Misrule, McPherson, 2010), the latter co-sponsored with The Antioch Review.

Take a Ride on the Wonderland Express

August 6, 2012 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

Written by Mark Martel, FilmDayton volunteer

A mysterious device fashioned from a garage door opener changes the perspectives of four different people as they experience and are transformed by its power.  Part psychological drama, part comedy and with a dash of science fiction, The Wonderland Express premiered at the StarLite Film Fest in Winter Garden, Florida in early 2012 and won its first award. The film was invited back for a summer festival there and has been an audience favorite on the festival circuit all across the country.

Now it’s homecoming. The Wonderland Express makes its local premiere at the 2012 FilmDayton Festival in downtown Dayton at the Neon Movies on Saturday, Aug 25th. The 11 a.m. matinee screening will include the shorts The Medal and Always Believe.

Directed by Daytonian Greg Nichols, the Express stars an all-local cast including Shawn Green, Ryan Singer, Natasha Randall, Craig Roberts, and Charles Larkowski.  Nichols and Green also produced the film with Rachel Wilson.

All of the actors in the film have roots in the Cincinnati/Dayton, Ohio theatre community and have extensive past experience in improvisation.  Writer/director Greg Nichols, and cast members Shawn Green and Ryan Singer were involved in the same improv group from 1998 to 2003, and their tight interplay shows onscreen.  Although the film began as a full script, most of the dialog was improvised during filming.  Cast member Natasha Randall was recently seen in the 2010 Sundance Festival Selection Take Shelter, another Ohio independent film.  Singer currently resides in Los Angeles, CA and is a feature performer of nationally touring comedian Marc Maron.

The core of the film lies in how the characters interact with a strange device and its influence on their normal everyday lives.  In this world of cell phones and GPS, today’s science can seem like magic to the average person, which is how the characters view their experiences with the device in the film as it changes their lives.  With limited understanding or preparation, their individual experiences are what lead them to different ends.

Read more about the national accolades for The Wonderland Express, the improvisation techniques used by actors, and a focus on simplicity and skill; the full article is available and tickets are on sale NOW.

The Wonderland Express will screen as part of the FilmDayton Festival on Saturday, August 25 at 11 AM at the Neon.
