About the your instructors and Glass Grotto:
Glass Grotto is a group of independent glass artists that opened a studio this year in the Front Street Buildings. Open on First Fridays and Third Sundays, the Glass Grotto displays and sells their artists’ one of a kind fused glass creations. DSA member Sarah Wrona and her partners in glass Liz Shinn and Margie Elaine will be teaching participants the beautiful ways dichroic glass can be cut and created into one of a kind pieces of jewelry.
What to expect:
Participants can expect to make creative choices on what glass combinations will be used and how to cut, measure, and mold that glass to make two items. Choose to make 1 pendent and 1 pair of earrings, or 2 pendants, or 2 pairs of earrings.
Participants can pick up their pieces from the Dayton Society of Artists after Nov. 3rd
What is dichroic glass?
The origins of dichroic glass can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where artisans experimented with different techniques to create glass with multiple colors. However, it wasn’t until the 20th century that modern dichroic glass was developed. Originally used in scientific applications such as lasers and space exploration, dichroic glass eventually found its way into the world of art and design. Made of a thin layer of metallic oxides deposited onto a glass surface, dichroic glass interacts with light in different ways based on the direction it is seen from.
When: Thursday, October 19th 6 – 8 PM
Where: Glass Grotto is located at the Front Street complex (1001 E 2nd St.) in the basement of building 100. The address for direct access to the studio is 110 Front St. The studio can also be accessed from door B-C and then walk down the stairs at the end of the hallway.
Cost: $75 per person for two works of jewelry art
Parking: Street parking on Front St. is available or park in the parking lot near door B-C and use the stairs access to the basement.
