Special Needs Family Information Roundtable: Understanding ETR/IEPs and 504s

Speakers will discuss topics relevant to caregivers of children and teens with special needs. This month’s topic is
Understanding ETR/IEPs and 504s.

Dawn Millhouse is the parent mentor for Centerville and Oakwood Schools. She provides support to parents who have children on IEPs or 504 plans. She also attends meetings, helps parents understand the process and helps them connect to community resources. As a parent of two children who have special needs, she connects with parents with lived experience helping them better advocate for their children.

Dr. LaShell Dauterman is a seasoned educator with 28 years of experience in teaching and leadership roles. She maintains a fervent dedication to the field of education and continually enhances her expertise in educational leadership and special education, particularly focusing on Autism Spectrum Disorder. Currently serving as a school administrator in Montgomery County, Dr. Dauterman has delivered presentations on Special Education at OCALI and TESOL, and has contributed articles to the Dayton Daily News and Southwest Ohio Parent regarding ASD. Furthermore, she holds the position of Vice President at the Dayton Autism Society, where she offers valuable guidance and resources to families in the Miami Valley region. Dr. Dauterman actively engages in outreach initiatives, providing training to law enforcement personnel and delivering informative sessions to community groups on the subject of ASD.

With over a decade of experience in human services and five years in the education system, Carrie Farley brings a wealth of knowledge from roles such as Substitute Teacher, Mental Health Specialist, Restorative Justice Specialist, and School Psychologist Assistant. Carrie holds a BA in Sociology and Social Work, an MS in School Counseling from Capella University, a Certificate in Contemporary Theories in Psychology, and an Ohio Career Guide Certification. On a personal note, She has two wonderful daughters—Calynn, a 6th grader, and Jordynn, a 8th grader who is both an actress and a published author. Jordynn is on a 504 Plan due to Rolandic Benign Epilepsy,and Calynn is receiving occupational therapy services for being twice exceptional with executive functioning deficits, giving her firsthand experience with educational accommodations. Carrie is passionate about improving student success, particularly in literacy, supporting transitions from ages 3 to 22, and helping families navigate their rights and responsibilities in the education system.
