We have Lionel Sternberger to thank for his invention of gastronomic genius. Lionel was 16 years old in 1926, flipping burgers inside his dad’s sandwich shop, the “Rite Spot,” in Pasadena, California.  Lionel, out of curiosity, added a piece of American cheese onto a hamburger frying on the griddle.

According to a 2019 report from Technomic, 70% of people would order American cheese on their cheeseburgers, compared to 59% who would order cheddar, 40% who would order Swiss and 39% who would order mozzarella. The default position for most cheese slices is squarely on top of the burger patty. At least, this was a widely held position until people on the internet lost their minds in 2017 when Google’s cheeseburger emoji featured cheese being placed below the patty, spurring a brief but intense internet debate as to the cheese’s rightful place in the burger hierarchy.

Many of your  favorite burger joints are offering deals to celebrate today, so enjoy a cheese burger today!

McDonald’s

The fast food chain McDonald’s is practically synonymous with burgers, so they definitely weren’t going to be left out of the celebration. McDonald’s app users can claim a double cheeseburger for just 50 cents.

Don’t have the app? Download it and join MyMcDonald’s Rewards for a free large fries. After you make your first purchase through the app, you’ll also qualify for your choice of free hash browns, vanilla ice cream cone, McChicken sandwich or a cheeseburger.

Burger King

You can also save some serious cash at Burger King this Saturday. Grab your choice of a Double Cheeseburger Meal, which includes small fries and a small drink, or a Snack Box, with a cheeseburger, medium fries, 10 nuggets and a small drink, for just $3.

Red Robin

There’s one word for this offer: Yummmm! Red Robin will offer buy-one-get-one 50% off on cheeseburgers for all Royalty club members all week. Offer is valid once per day for each member all week through September 19.

Smashburger

Smashburger will have $5 Double Classic Burgers on September 18. Order with cheese and customize with your choice of toppings.

SONIC
Timed perfectly with National Cheeseburger Day on September 18, the SONIC Grilled Cheese Burger is currently available for half price when ordered online or through the SONIC App. This offer is available now through Oct. 31!

Wendy’s

Not to be outdone by its fast food counterparts, the folks at Wendy’s decided to extend National Cheeseburger Day through the whole week, from September 13 – 19, 2021. Take advantage of their buy-one-get-one special and choose any two premium cheeseburgers for the price of one.

If you’re looking for Dayton’s best burger Slyder’s , Lucky’s, Hanks Local, Blind Bobs and Benjamin’s The Burger Master come to the top of the list over and over again, according to Dayton Foodies.
