For the final DP&L Summer in the City signature event, the Downtown Dayton Partnership and its local arts partners will pull out all the stops. Art in the City takes place Friday, August 4, in conjunction with First Friday activities.
After last year’s successful turn-out, the Dayton Visual Arts Center is back with its juried art show. Twenty-five local artists will have one of their original creations displayed at one of 25 downtown businesses. The installations will be up for two weeks, and the public is invited to vote for their favorite. The winning artist takes home $500! The juried show debuts on August 4 and voting is open until Friday, August 18. More information is available online.
To celebrate the kickoff for the juried art show, downtown will be buzzing with arts activities, featuring both visual and performing arts. K12 Gallery & TEJAS is leading the charge to organize the Art Walk on Jefferson, a five-block “art crawl” connecting K12’s space with DVAC. Enjoy live art demonstrations, “yarn/crochet bombs,” dance performances, a family fun corner at Second and Jefferson, and art-making stations all along the Art Walk from 5 to 9 pm. Check the website for participating artists.
Downtown’s Avenue of the Arts (Main Street between First and Second) will be activated that evening, featuring performances inside and outside the Schuster Center, Victoria Theatre, and the Loft Theatre. Most programs are scheduled from 5 to 9 pm. The Schuster Center will also have the winners from the 2017 Downtown in Focus photography contest on display. The website has more information about artists and organizations participating here.
More fun abounds on downtown’s most popular summer spots. From 6 to 8 pm, select patios will feature visual or performing arts entertainment during the Party on the Patio. Check the website for locations and activities.
Of course it’s also First Friday, which means there’s more fun happening throughout the evening, including a Dayton Dragons home game, Courteous Mass bike ride, dining and drink specials, shopping events, Pickin’ in the Park concert and Urban Outdoor Experience at RiverScape MetroPark, and more!
There’s even more arts fun planned the week of the big night. Arts Week on the Square, presented by Sinclair College, will take place from 11:30 am to 1 pm.
