RENOIR9.jpgHello Everyone,

Another 2 new films are heading to THE NEON this weekend – RENOIR and TO THE WONDER…and MUD will stick around for another week.  We’ve had several really great, fun films come and go rather quickly around here (i.e. – STARBUCK, THE SAPPHIRES).  If you see a title that piques your interest, hurry down.  It may not stick around too long.

Every year, The Dayton Daily News holds a contest for “Best Movie Theater.” Special thanks to all of you who took the time to vote. WE WON…and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Synopsis for RENOIR: “Set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915, Jean Renoir — son of the Impressionist painter, Pierre-Auguste — returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I. At his side is Andree, a young woman who rejuvenates, enchants, and inspires both father and son.” (taken from Samuel Goldwyn Films) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Synopsis for TO THE WONDER (One Week Only!): “The anticipated new feature from renowned filmmaker Terrence Malick (Tree of Life, The New World), TO THE WONDER boldly and lyrically explores the complexities of love in all its forms. Parisian single mother Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and Midwestern tourist Neil (Ben Affleck) fall madly in love in France and relocate to Oklahoma with Marina’s young daughter to start a life together. As their relationship wanes and her visa nears expiration, Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Javier Bardem) who is struggling with his faith, while Neil renews a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Jane (Rachel McAdams).” (taken from Magnolia Pictures) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site. If you’re interested in the films of Terrence Malick, you won’t want to miss this one on the big screen.

Less than 10 seats remain for our upcoming special screening of GIRL RISING. For more about this film, click this LINK. This is the site where you can watch the trailer, read about the film and reserve your ticket. The screening is set to take place on Wednesday, June 5 at 7:30. Advanced tickets are only available on the website listed above. If tickets remain, we will be able to sell them at the door on the night of the show. Watch the trailer…this film looks terrific!

On Thursday, June 20 at 7:30, we will host a special screening of the new film I DO. (I saw this film at The Cleveland International Film Festival, and the audience adored it!) “A gay Brit living in New York is deprived of his immigration status, and risks losing his family and life in the U.S. He marries his lesbian best friend to remain in the country and stay with his family, but things get complicated when he meets the love of his life and is forced to make an impossible choice.” This one night only screening is part of Dayton’s PRIDE festivities. Tickets are $9 for General Admission. Members of The Greater Dayton LGBT Center get in for $7 (with valid membership card). Tickets are on sale now at THE NEON’s box office (I’ll also be at the PRIDE event on Courthouse Square this Saturday…with tickets ready to sell).

About Jonathan McNeal

Jonathan McNeal, a graduate of Wright State's Motion Picture Production program, has been managing THE NEON in downtown Dayton since the Fall of 2001. Having grown up in a small town in northeast Ohio, the idea of an independent movie theater that showed hard-to-find films seemed like something that could only be found in a major metropolis. Upon moving to Dayton in the early 1990's, finding THE NEON was a was like finding a new home.
McNeal's film work includes the documentary of Dayton's beloved drag troupe - THE RUBI GIRLS. The doc premiered in San Francisco in 2003 and played across the country and as far away as Australia. The film continues to be played at night clubs and on college campuses as an educational and outreach tool.
McNeal himself has been a part of the performance troupe since 1997.
