Guggenheim Grotto Comes to Canal Street Tavern

Originally compared with Simon & Garfunkle, Dublin alt-folk duo The Guggenheim Grotto has been hard at work prepping a new album while touring in support of their third album, The Universe Is Laughing.  The album was largely written and recorded in hotel rooms and living rooms while the duo toured the United States.  They’ve been praised by NPR’s World Cafe and KCRW for their folk tunes mixed with a bit of electro-pop.

You can see Guggenheim Grotto tomorrow night (April 12th) at Canal Street Tavern along with Dayton’s own BJSR.  This will be BJSR’s last local show until August as Ben Rivet is heading out on the road in promotion of his Go W/The Flow project with local yoga instructor Tori Reynolds.

This video comes to us hot off the from presses from BJSR.  Directed by Centerville native Tom Hoying, “The Lover” is the first single from his new EP, Axe and Vox and Ben Rivet’s first fully produced music video since the shot-on-iPhone sensation, “Play”.

BJSR Releases Debut EP

October 20, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Performing under the name BJSR, Ben Rivet has become a staple in the local music scene.  He hosts Monday nights at Therapy Cafe and has been playing a variety of venues around town in support of local and national artists.  Thursday night, Rivet will celebrate the release of his debut EP, AXE AND VOX at Canal Street Tavern.

Rivet produced the EP himself with Connor Smith and Damon Sink over a ten month period, and ten musicians contributed to the tracks.  The six original songs showcase a variety of styles from simple folk tunes to indie pop.  Rivet says that making the EP has been a learning experience.

“Playing live is very freeing because I can always change up the style of each song each time I play, but I had to make very concrete decisions on the direction of each song for the EP. Doing that really allowed me to break apart and examine my music in a fully instrumentated context. That’s why I titled it AXE AND VOX. For me, it was the process of taking the songs beyond the guitar (axe) and voice (vox).”

You can catch Rivet performing live on 91.3FM WYSO on Wednesday during Niki Dakota’s Excursions (10am-1pm).  For more information on the EP release show featuring performances by BJSR, Bella Ruse, Charles Tipton Jr. and Early Arrial, check out the DaytonMostMetro Events Calendar.
