Experience the Best of Downtown at Urban Nights

May 8, 2013 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Photography by Josh Mayes

More than 100 downtown venues are offering special events, discounts and more for the May 10 Urban Nights.

Urban Nights is getting an updated flavor and feel. Entertainment now will focus on three “hotspots” located throughout downtown, allowing visitors to experience downtown’s biggest street party in a new way by visiting hubs of activity throughout downtown. The next Urban Nights will be held 5 to 10 p.m. this Friday, May 10, in downtown Dayton, the Oregon District and Wright-Dunbar Business Village. A list of the hotspots at the spring event is below.

“We celebrated the 10th anniversary of Urban Nights last year and felt it was a good time to re-evaluate the event,” said Sandy Gudorf, president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership, which presents Urban Nights. “It’s clear the event has been extremely successful, as it brings more than 30,000 people to our downtown, many business owners report record sales, and we continue to receive a great deal of positive feedback from the community about Urban Nights.

“Still, we wanted to make sure Urban Nights more effectively meets its overall goal: to showcase all downtown has to offer and the places that only can be experienced in downtown Dayton,” Gudorf added. “We believe this new plan will encourage people to visit more places downtown during Urban Nights while giving us the opportunity to better highlight different areas in our center city.”

A map of participating venues and a complete performance schedule, including a listing of all participating locations’ events and specials, is available online. Follow Urban Nights on Facebook for regular updates and more information.

More than 30,000 people come downtown to experience this free event, when more than 100 establishments showcase downtown’s dining, nightlife, art, music, retail and housing options. The best way to see as much as possible during Urban Nights is to walk, and many of the destinations are just a short distance from each other. Greater Dayton RTA also will provide free event busses to help visitors get around.

Urban Nights is presented by the Downtown Dayton Partnership, Montgomery County and the City of Dayton, with support from Greater Dayton RTA, Bud Light Lime, Miller-Valentine Group, the Downtown Priority Board, Sinclair Community College, Mix 107.7-FM, WYSO 91.3-FM, Wright-Dunbar Business Village and the Ohio Arts Council.

Nightbeast has been writing and performing for about 10 years, but earlier this year he teamed up with a band to give his already awesome live shows an extra punch.  Nightbeast also released an EP earlier this month called You’re Welcome, which is available on iTunes.  The video below made its debut during the release party for You’re Welcome, and word has it that a follow up video is already in the works.  You can catch Nightbeast at the 90s Reloaded show on August 31st at Canal Street Tavern.

According to Okay Lindon’s Facebook page, the band has been hard at work to a follow up to their 2012 album, Rotating Dates.  A release date for the new project hasn’t been announced yet, but in the meantime you can check out the band live this Friday night at Blind Bob’s along with Roley Yuma, Post Coma Network and Bridget Egan.  For details on this and other upcoming shows, check out the Dayton Most Metro events calendar.

This week’s video features Okay Lindon performing one of my favorite songs from Rotating Dates, “Table Talk,” shot by Drexel Dave Sparks.

This Wednesday marks the latest edition in the Dirty Little Secrets series of shows at Wiley’s Comedy Club.  This time around the theme of the variety show is Social Consciousness and will feature comedy, debate and beatboxing from Dayton’s own ErratiC and Chubbs.  We’re featuring them as this week’s video with some footage of their performance at South Park Tavern.  Skip ahead to about 1:05 when the tunes really get rolling, and get more details on the Dirty Little Secrets Social Consciousness Show at the Dayton Most Metro events calendar.

It’s funny when things work out.  I spent all morning trying to find the perfect Presidents’ Day music video to no avail, but luckily, our friends at The Music Seen tipped me off to a great show happening this week with a slight presidential or rather First Lady connection.  Hailing from Louisville, KY, The Ladybirds will perform Thursday night at South Park Tavern with local openers, Army of Infants.  Check out our events calendar for more info.

February 3 and 4th mark the second outing for the Dayton Does Dayton music festival at Canal Street Tavern.  The two event celebrates our community’s music with a robust lineup of local bands covering each others’ work and performing their own original music.  We’ll be bringing more info on the festival next week, but for now, let this video explain more.

Starving in the Belly of the Whale released their latest album, The Journey Less Traveled, at the end of last year.  It, along with the band’s previous two albums, is available for free download on the band’s website (though they are accepting PayPal donations at the bottom of the page, so chip in if you’re so inclined).  Starving in the Belly of the Whale will perform on Friday, January 20th at South Park Tavern with the New Old-Fashioned and Bernoulli.

This week’s video is the second song from The Journey Less Traveled, “Waiting is a Virtue.”

Traditionally the beginning of a new year is slow for album releases, but not here in Dayton.  Several great local albums are set to be released in the next few weeks including the highly anticipated debut EP by Good English.  The band will celebrate the release of Take Control on January 20th at Canal Street Tavern.  In the meantime, enjoy the band’s debut music video for the title track.

This week’s video is a new band that features some familiar faces.  The New Old-Fashioned is the combined forces of David Payne, Kent Montgomery, Tom Blackbern and Jon Chasteen. The band has roots in Xenia and performed its debut show at the Xenia Area Community Theater (X*ACT) a few weeks ago, which is where today’s video is from.  Put this band on your list of folks to watch in 2012, and let’s hear it for the combined forces of local music and community theater.  I know I’d love to see more of that kind of collaboration in the new year.  Enjoy!

There’s a lot to celebrate and be thankful for this week.  One thing that I’m celebrating my thankfulness for is Canal Street Tavern, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this weekend.  A week of Thanksgiving traditions, including shows from The Psychodots and Shrug, will culminate on Saturday night with a 30th Birthday Party & Hoot, open to any of the musicians who’ve performed on Canal Street’s stage over the years. We’ll tell you more about the festivities later this week, but for today enjoy a preview of Thursday night at Canal Street Tavern when Werksgiving will return to the stage.

In the words of a classic film minus a classic killer, “8 more days til Halloween, Halloween, Halloween…”  Okay, so we’re actually a bit farther a long than that.  So it’s a perfect time to share a fantastic music video by local musician and filmmaker Henrique Couto.  It’s a new twist on the classic tune, Monster Mash and features Couto alongside Moriah Yux (Jasper the Colossal), Jay Madewell (Fab Gear) and a host of friends and ghouls.

There are shows you plan to attend for months ahead of time.  And then there are the ones that sneak up on you last minute, causing you to drop everything to attend.  I’ve been spending the last few minutes rearranging my schedule for tomorrow night (and rearranging my Music Video Monday schedule) for what’s going to be a great show at South Park Tavern.  UK band, the Indelicates will be at SPT tomorrow night performing with locals Revampire. This is the Indelicates first US tour, so come out and give them a Dayton welcome.  As with all shows at South Park Tavern, the music starts around 9pm, and it’s all-ages.
