The Oregon Historic District is preparing to show off its homes for the holidays. The neighborhood’s annual Candlelight Holiday Tour – a Dayton tradition since 1979 – is slated for Dec. 3 to 5.
The beloved event is the Oregon Historic District Society’s largest fundraiser and attracts hundreds of Miami Valley residents.
Six lavishly decorated residences will participate in this year’s tour, including this year’s dessert house constructed by stepladder inventor John H. Balsley more than 140 years ago. The district’s residences, gazebo and lampposts will be decked out with greenery and/or festive candle lights and decor in time for the tour.
After touring the interiors of six beautiful homes, guests will be treated to a large assortment of pastries, punches and coffees at the Balsley mansion. A musician will play Christmas carols in the living room.
Their homes are completely decorated by themselves and it is always a delight to see how creative they can be.
Guests begin their experience at the “meeting house”.
From there volunteer tour guides dressed in top hats and capes guide our guests through our neighborhood with lanterns highlighting the history of our homes and restorations.
