Updated- Have Tix for Gem City Shine- What You Should Know

So this event has been put together rather quickly and we are doing our best to share with you the most helpful info we have.  We’ll keep updating this as we know more, but here’s what we can share so far:

ENTRY

The gates at the three entrances (Wayne & 4th, Wayne & Van Buren, 5th & Patterson) will be opened at 10am on Sunday. All guests will  have to enter through these three gates.  This is a weapon-free event. There will be five metal detectors at each gate that EVERYONE entering the district will have to go through. Gates will be closed once capacity reaches 20,000, organizers explained.

Fifth Street will be closed between Patterson Boulevard and Wayne Avenue beginning as early as 6 am Sunday, Aug. 25.

The Police are not allowing any BAGS or BACKPACKS  through the GATES.  Wallets and wristlets no larger than 5″x8″x1″ are allowed.  You can NOT bring chairs or umbrellas into the event either. If a guest has medical or dietary needs, related items may put in a bag (no larger than 14″x14″x4″) which will be searched and inspected. Val Beerbower from the Downtown Dayton Partnership says “the police may make exceptions for diaper bags and oxygen bags.”  Guests are permitted to bring water bottles, according to Natalie from Corner Kitchen.

Volunteers will  start manning the gates at 1pm  to check/scan tickets.  Children 6 and younger can attend with a ticket-holding parent; children 7 and older will need their own ticket to attend.  There is no re-admission.

No professional cameras other than credentialed members of the media will be allowed.

People can get commemorative T-shirts with a minimum donation of $20. Proceeds will benefit The Dayton Foundation’s Oregon District Tragedy Fund.

Emergency services will be on hand to address any medial issues. Behavioral health specialists also will be available for any emotional or mental health needs that may arise. Look for the signs.

FAMILY ZONE

A family zone with special activities, including a community art project and live entertainment, will be located in the large parking lot on the western end of Fifth Street near the Patterson Boulevard.

A food pavilion will be located in the parking lot near Omega Music, 318 E. Fifth St. This is also where the community art project, led by  The Contemporary Dayton and The Mosaic Institute, a collaborative mosaic that will be embedded in the sidewalk as a permanent memorial honoring those that were taken from us. Team Mosaic will finish the doves this week in the studio, and the community will be asked to fill in the rest Sunday during Gem City Shine. “You will be able to write a message on the back of your tile before you place it in the mosaic memorial,” says Jes McMillan of the Mosaic Institute. “In this memorial, we can place our pain, our anger, our prayers and hope for healing. Please join us.”

FOOD & DRINK

Beer trucks, soda and water stations, T-shirt stations, and donation stations will be located at several places throughout the District and in the Wiley’s Comedy Club Parking lot.

FAMILY ZONE

PARKING

There will be NO access to the parking lots in the Oregon District.  The Transportation Center garage will be FREE and OPEN all day on Sunday, so please encourage your employees to park there and give themselves plenty of time to get to work.

Shuttles
Free parking  will be available at the University of Dayton Arena lots A, B and C, with complimentary shuttles provided by Greater Dayton RTA.

Ride Sharing

There will be designated ride-sharing pick up/drop off zones outside both the North & South Wayne Avenue entrances.
