Let Tabari McCoy Make You Laugh At WIley’s!

July 2, 2023 By Dayton937

Given the fact many Dayton comedy fans just celebrated America’s birthday,  Tabari McCoy knows some people might a little tired after their Fourth of July events.

That’s not going to stop him, however, from bringing plenty of fireworks to the stage when he headlines Wiley’s Comedy Club this weekend.

“Let’s break it down: Tuesday was  recovery day for many people, especially if they didn’t go to work Monday because they were too busy partying Friday night-Sunday. That means they’re going to cram four days’ of work into Wednesday and Thursday, making them ready to relax as soon as Friday hits,” McCoy says, envisioning how the week is going to go leading up to his shows. “You already grilled, got sunburnt and/or spent too much money to end up home alone or with the same person you’ve been with forever, so why not come get some laughs? There’s no threat of burning down your house with those extra M-80s you forgot were near that bottle of lighter fluid in the garage.”

While it remains to be seen whether he is can make such predictions accurately, McCoy’s comedy track record reflects his ability to entertain audiences with hilarious results. Possessing 17+ years’ experience on stage, McCoy has performed at several festivals such as the San Francisco Sketchfest, Gilda’s LaughFest in Grand Rapids, Mich. and the inaugural Limestone Comedy Festival in Bloomington, Ind. Routinely heard on Pandora and Spotify, he has also appeared on the Fox’s former late night stand-up show “Laughs” and has released two albums, Laughing with a Panther and Remarkable.

In addition, McCoy is an accomplished writer with work published in The Cincinnati Enquirer and Ebony.com among other outlets. (Many of the reviews from his McCoy on Movies blog are featured here on Dayton 937.) His appearances at Wiley’s, however, come in support of his latest project: “Be Happy,” his debut 1-hour stand-up special from Four By Three Productions currently available to watch on YouTube. Clips from the special have garnered views in the tens of thousands across Instagram and Facebook.

“I knew I had a funny and true joke about how most of America is really just the Midwest, but not to the tune of 85,000-plus views. If I ever find the time to start making all the sketches I have ideas for, maybe I can just become a TikTok influencer and have companies pay me to just eat burritos,” McCoy says. “Seriously, what is wrong with us that so many people just sit around watching others do everything things for hours on end; smartphones are just ironically named at this point!”

That notwithstanding, he hopes all those who come out to his shows will be happy that they did.

“Pretty much anyone with a pulse knows the world is insane and we do horrible things to each other daily. The fact I haven’t caught a case dealing with the way people drive on I-75 between 8 a.m. to midnight is nothing short of a small miracle,” he says half-jokingly. “When I talk about being happy, I think how great it is I can get people – who sometimes may be a little intoxicated – to not think about the person or people in their life that drive them nuts while I’m on stage. I don’t want to get into that laughter/medicine cliché, but no one has ever left one of my shows to then start mailing crazy-*** letters to the media about teaching the world ‘the truth’ – RIP Ted Kaczynski!”

24 4th of July Celebrations Around Town

June 29, 2023 By Dayton937

Also known as Independence Day, the 4th of July commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which solidified the American colonies’ resolution to fight for their independence from Britain.
In Fourth of July celebrations, fireworks signify national pride and patriotism. They had been used in China since at least the 12th century, and in the 15th century they became popular with European monarchs as a way to celebrate national triumphs, the restoration of peace, and the monarchs’ own birthdays. Fireworks have been part of Independence Day in the United States since its first celebration, in 1777.

Phish Announces 2 Nights in Dayton!

June 27, 2023 By Dayton937

Phish has just released their fall tour schedule, which includes stops in Chicago, Nashville and two nights at Dayton’s Nutter Center. October 10 and 11, Phish returns to  the campus of Wright State University.

The group first played what was then known as the Ervin J. Nutter Center on November 30, 1995. Another stellar Phish performance at the venue came during the legendary Fall Tour 1997 on December 7, 1997. Twenty years later the band was back at the Nutter Center on July 18, 1997.  Phish fans refer to that show as what is still one of the best sets of their career, Phish’s Dayton show on this day in 1997 saw the band ride a massive swell of momentum to one of the most complete, fluid, well-crafted shows they’ve ever played.

Registration for a ticket lottery is open now at tickets.phish.com. The request window closes on Monday, July 10 at 12 p.m. ET. Tickets then go on sale to the general public on Saturday, July 15 at 10 a.m. ET. You can purchase Phish fall tour tickets via Ticketmaster.com.

Graeter’s also announced a new “secret menu item,” a Lemon Meringue Pie sundae. The sundae features white bundt cake, strawberry topping, Lemon Meringue Pie ice cream and marshmallow topping. It is available while supplies last.

As will all Graeters’ bonus flavors, they are a limited-time offering, and once the flavor is gone, it is retired for the year.

The other bonus flavors that debuted earlier this year were Dough’licious, a caramel brownie batter ice cream loaded with peanut butter dough, cookie dough and brownie pieces and Hot Honey Crunch which is a crunchy honeycomb with  sweet icing pieces combined with a little heat.

You can get  Lemon Meringue Pie at any of the area scoop shops or online, or by using the Graeter’s app.

Santana at The Rose

June 25, 2023 By Dayton937

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Carlos Santana Delivers with a level of passion and soul equal to the legendary sonic charge of his guitar, the sound of Carlos Santana is one of the world’s best-known musical signatures. For more than five decades – from Santana’s earliest days as a ground-breaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco – Carlos Santana has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural, and geographical boundaries. To date, Santana has won ten GRAMMY Awards and three Latin GRAMMY Awards, with a record-tying nine GRAMMY Awards for a single project for 1999’s Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”). He has received the Billboard Century Award (1996), was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998), received the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor (2009), and was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Award (2013). Among many other distinctions, Carlos Santana has been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time;” and has joined the Rolling Stones as one of only two bands to have an album reach the Top 10 in every decade since the 1960s. In 2018, he released his first MasterClass, and recently celebrated three epic milestones – the 20th anniversary of his ground-breaking album Supernatural, the 50th anniversary of his legendary performance at Woodstock, and the 50th anniversary of his masterpiece Abraxas. His most recent album, the powerful, energy-infused Blessings and Miracles (2021) features collaborations with Rob Thomas, Chris Stapleton, Steve Winwood, and many others. Santana continues his residency at the House of Blues Las Vegas where he celebrated his 10th anniversary of performing in the intimate venue in May 2022.
