Crafted & Cured Set To Open in Troy

February 7, 2023 By Dayton937

Crafted & Cured will host a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony with the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce and city officials on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. This marks the official opening of Crafted & Cured on Market Street in Troy.  Ribbon cutting is scheduled for 4:30 PM and Crafted & Cured will open immediately following at 5 PM with the full menu available for purchase.

Regular operating hours begin February 9, 2023; Wednesday through Thursday 3-10 PM, Friday through Saturday 3 PM – midnight, and Sunday 11 AM – 7 PM.

“We feel incredibly honored to re-open Crafted & Cured to serve the greater Dayton community. We’ve missed our clientele and we look forward to foraging new relationships in the community of Troy and beyond. Everyone’s been incredibly supportive,” expressed Andy Routson and Christian Alvarez, co-owners of Crafted & Cured.

Crafted & Cured’s new location at 8 S Market St., holds significant historical value to the area, originally constructed in 1929 as The First Troy National Bank (formerly known as US Bank). During soft opening events, customers captured photos exploring the original architecture and bank features, specifically enjoying the Safety Deposit Vault, one of two original vaults in the space.

“Crafted & Cured will provide a unique dining environment in one of Troy’s most iconic structures. There is no doubt that this location will become a regional destination for people wanting a relaxing experience in a truly distinctive atmosphere.

This will be known as a place for people to spend time to sit and talk. There are no televisions, and the furnishings are inviting. There are few places like this anywhere and we are fortunate to have something like this in Troy,” explained Wade Westfall, landlord and owner of Four Sons Development.

Crafted & Cured will open with a charcuterie bar featuring boards and bar bites, 60-taps of craft beer, ciders, sours, and meads. Wine and champagne sold by the glass and bottle. An additional bar with a bourbon-centric beverage program will be added in the coming months, along with an expanded food program.

Crafted & Cured plans to extend operating hours as foot-traffic increases and will continue to expand the staff. To join the team at Crafted & Cured, email info@craftedncured.com with resume and cover letter.

Dayton Fine Art Store To Close

February 6, 2023 By Dayton937

The Hue House, a fine art supply store and studio, which opened in Aug of 2020 on Fifth Street in St. Anne’s Hill historic neighborhood will be closing.  Owners  Dana and Ryan Vingris were “really excited to bring easy access to fine art supplies and expertise to Dayton’s vibrant arts community.”

They posted this announcement on their Facebook page:
With a broken and heavy heart, we have made the difficult decision to close Hue House mid-March.
The store has really struggled for the last two years. At the end of December we took a long and hard look at the numbers along with the other variables that have made business difficult. The sales data paired with supply chain shortages, significant price increases of goods and shipping, supplier challenges and the residual effects of the pandemic painted a very clear picture of something that is no longer sustainable. We have worked to hang on as long as possible but are out of grit and resources to keep things going.
So many of you have become wonderful friends and an extension of our family and for that we are ever grateful. We appreciate those of you who made a choice to shop local when possible and supported the store.
While the store is closing, we are fortunate to be able to take away the important things – the relationships. We will continue to be around Dayton and hope to stay in touch while we take time to focus on our family and rebuild.

Dana, Ryan, Rowan and Margot

Starting Wednesday, the store will be discounted 40%. Additionally, we will be selling tables, shelving, storage lockers, flat files, displays, studio equipment and other miscellaneous store items. Information on what is available will be available in coming weeks. We plan to have regular hours for the month of February and will have we adjusted schedule in March that will be announced at a later date so please continue to follow on social media for updated hours and schedule information.
We will honor existing gift cards while the store remains open but will no longer be selling new gift cards. Monthly discounts will no longer apply during the closing sale.

There’s a New Bloody Mary Champ in Town!

February 5, 2023 By Dayton937

Today over 400 guests celebrated the beloved brunch cocktail. A bloody mary, at its essence, is built of tomato juice and vodka. Some add Worcestershire sauce, some citrus or spices and these drinks are often further embellished by all sorts of add-ons, twists and turns as garnishes. And that’s just what a dozen local bartenders did today, using  Lily Water Vodka  from Dayton Barrel Works. Planned2Give Co-founder and event co-producer Jeff Jackson said, “it’s great to bring this back after 2 years off due to covid, and even more gratifying to know that so many people came enjoy some bloody mary’s for a great cause.”

Participating bartenders came from Another Broken Egg,  Blox Spiked Ice, Brixx Ice Co, Dublin Pub, Fifth Street Brewpub, Jaqua’s at the Greene, Loose Ends Brewing Company, Mercenary Bartenders, RADS, The Roosevelt Room, W. Social Tab and Table and Wheat Penny.

Variations included Fifth Street Brewpubs Bloody McLain made with Mezcal, Wheat Penny’s that was made with a frozen sorbet, Another Broken Egg used a pepper infused vodka, while others had secret recipes they wouldn’t share.  And the garnishes, grilled cheese sandwiches, fruit, cheese, vegetables, bacon and so much more. Scott Conrad, from The Vue Ultra Lounge,  who tied for the winner of this event  its second year tied with Scott Conrad, and in year 3 Scott took the undisputed  top prize, was back as an alumni serving up  his Rad’s Bloody Mary Mix, which he launched after his success at the Showdown.  While he’s not eligible to win any more now that’s he’s gone commercial with his RAD’s Bloody Mary mix, he may have had one of the coolest treats at his table, a gravy fountain to go with the biscuits he was serving up provided by Centerville Pizza.

Newcomer to the event, Blox Spiced Ice‘s Stephanie Brown, truly took it over the top with her garnish and it was a hit and took the best garnish title. On a fleurs de lis skewer you got bourbon chicken, andouille sausage, creole spiced shrimp, pickeled okra and a crawfih risotto ball.

They always say you eat with your eyes first so having an inviting table is a big deal and for The Roosevelt Room, located in Liberty Center, they walked away with Best Table Decor.

As a special treat, Speakeasy Sweets was on hand with their Bloody Mary Muffins.

And voted for by the people, Dayton Best Bloody Mary winner by a landslide was made by , Loose Ends Brewing Company! General manager Kent Loose says he attributes their win to “having a well balanced cocktail mix.” They walked away with $500 cash and bragging rights!  Well at least until we do it all again on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Proceeds from the Bloody Mary Showdown were donated to The Castle, a gathering place of trust and friendship which supports people with mental illness and disorders to achieve their highest level of competence  and independence.”

I’m inspired by artists like half•alive, Death Cab for Cutie, Cage the Elephant, and Tessa Violet. And I shamelessly still listen to some early 2000’s Pop hits.

Black History Month Art Exhibition

January 31, 2023 By Dayton937

Ed Dixon, owner of the Edward A. Dixon Gallery in Downtown Dayton has curated a Black History Month art exhibition for this February featuring several local artists from the Dayton area.

The artwork featured in the exhibition includes pieces from Clifford Darrett that center on the distinguished military service of Black Americans, artwork from Gregory DeGroat highlighting culturing figures and many other artworks that focus on Black History from the 20th century to present.

They Gave the Supreme Sacrifice by Clifford Darrett

“It’s a great collection of artwork. I not only encourage people to come see the exhibition and read the descriptions, but also take the opportunity to do further research on the people, places and events covered in the show. There are many layers to history beyond the highlights we often receive that can give us a better context and knowledge into who we are, how we got here and where we can go.” ~ Ed Dixon

Ben Carson – by Clarice Moore

This is the first formal exhibition at the gallery since moving to its new location at 222 N. St. Clair Street. The gallery initially moved from its original location next the Dayton Arcade to a small space inside the Talbott Tower when the COVID-19 pandemic started taking its toll on most businesses in 2020. When the country began to recover, a new location was scouted, secured and opened for business in August 2022.

Ali – by Gregory DeGroat

The Black History Month art exhibition is slated to open to the public on Thursday, February 2nd and run until February 25th. There will be a public reception and artist talk with light refreshments on Friday, February 17th from 6pm-8pm.

A university student exhibition is also planned for the Spring and the 3rd Annual We’re Doing It All Wrong® art exhibition will open in the Fall.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss at The Rose May 3rd

January 31, 2023 By Dayton937

On the heels of a triumphant year that saw Robert Plant and Alison Krauss reunite for their first international tour in more than a decade, the duo has announced new tour dates for 2023.

Kicking off in April, this latest run will bring the music of 2021’s T Bone Burnett-produced, Grammy-nominated Raise the Roof and 2007’s Grammy-sweeping Raising Sand to audiences across the US, including a stop in Huber Heights, OH for a performance at Rose Music Center on Wednesday, May 3.

Taking Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ return to the road, which included sold-out shows at NYC’s Beacon Theatre and LA’s Greek Theatre as well as headline slots at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, and Roskilde has been heralded as “a collaboration that should last for ‘Evermore,’” (Variety), and “a master class of a concert” (Chicago Tribune).

Backed by an all-star band of guitarist JD McPherson, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Dennis Crouch, string player Stuart Duncan, and Viktor Krauss on keyboards and guitar, setlists have included favorites from both Raising Sand and Raise the Roof, as well as reimagined arrangements of Led Zeppelin classics.

A highlight of their recent tour was the band’s performance at Denver’s storied Red Rocks Amphitheatre on September 1. Now, for the first time, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss: Live at Red Rocks will be available to stream in its entirety on March 16 at 8:00 PM GMT for viewers in the UK/Europe and 8:00 PM ET for US viewers, exclusively via Mandolin, the music industry’s leading digital fan engagement platform. Tickets for the stream, which will have a viewing window of 48 hours from its premiere, will be available for purchase starting on February 14. For more information, go to https://mandolin.com/

Raise the Roof is currently nominated for three GRAMMY Awards and was the #1 most played album at Americana radio in 2022, having occupied the #1 spot on the Americana radio chart for 21 consecutive weeks. Last week, Raise the Roof was named Best International Album at the UK Americana Awards ceremony in London. Since its release, the record has amassed critical acclaim from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Variety, Pitchfork, NPR, and more. Additionally, Plant & Krauss appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Kelly Clarkson Show, CBS, PBS, MSNBC, BBC, and beyond, and closed out the year with a special 90-minute episode of CMT Crossroads.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Friday, February 3 atTicketmaster.com and RoseMusicCenter.com.

WSU Theater Arcadia Feb 3 – 12

January 30, 2023 By Dayton937

Wright State Theatre will present Tom Stoppard’s romantic play of ideas, ARCADIA at Wright State University’s Creative Arts Center from February 3-12. Stoppard is widely considered one of the greatest playwrights of the English language, and ARCADIA one of his most impressive works. Many audiences know Stoppard for his early play, ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, or his screenplay for SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. First produced in 1993, ARCADIA leaps artfully between the past and present, certainty and confusion, genius and unexpressed passion in what one critic called “Tom Stoppard’s richest, most ravishing comedy to date”.  The play explores the possibilities life offers as we make seemingly minor, but irreversible choices.

ARCADIA is directed by Marya Spring Cordes (Associate Chair of the School of Fine and Performing Arts), whose recent works at Wright State include SWEET CHARITY, THE WOLVES and THE CURIOUS INCEDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME. She is also a regular contributor at The Human Race Theatre Company, among other professional theatres. About ARCADIA she says, “Arcadia is a witty and thoughtful comedy that strikes you immediately with the beauty of the language and complexity of the relationships.  The audience moves between real time (of 1809) and a future reality decidedly set on exhuming the mysteries of the past. The play is emotionally riveting, Stoppard’s mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat and the payoff is stunning”. Set in a classic British manor home called Sidley Park, Stoppard has created a dual world of both the present day and 1809, which alternate and eventually overlap with each other in a theatrical experience that will leave audiences enraptured. Stoppard has the rare ability to make complex ideas of physics, philosophy, higher math and even chaos theory accessible and powerfully dramatic to all of us.

ARCADIA has scenic design by Michael Brewer (Wright State’s SWEAT, 9 TO 5 and others), costume design by senior Design/Technology major Sean Hannah, lighting design by Prof. Matthew Benjamin, properties design by John Lavarnway, sound design by James Dunlap, technical direction by Kevin Nedberg, and stage management by Isabella Myers.

Arcadia runs from February 3 – 12 in Wright State’s Creative Arts Center Festival Playhouse. For tickets, www.wright.edu/theatre or Box Office (937) 775-2500.
