Lucky Foods For The New Year

December 27, 2022 By Dayton937

Cork Shot Out From a Bottle of Champagne --- Image by © Royalty-Free/CorbisFor many the start of a new year is all about making a fresh start.  For others it’s a time of tradition.  Either way, why not start your year with some of these foods considered to bring good luck and prosperity  for the new year. Here’s a round up of some of the best know food traditions:

Hoppin’ John—  A traditional southern New Year’s dish —black eyed peas and ham hocks. An old saying goes, “Eat peas on New Year’s day to have plenty of everything the rest of the year.”

Eating-12-GrapesGrapes – consume 12 at midnight. Each grape represents a different month, so if the 3rd grape is a bit sour, March might be a rocky month.  This tradition hails from Spain in 1909 by grape growers who were trying to create a market for left over grapes.

Noodles– Eat noodles for longevity. In China, the New Year’s Lucky Foods meal always includes noodles. You must eat at least one long noodle in one piece (without chewing) for a good long life, so you will need a big pot to boil them whole and practice your slurping skills. Japan has the same belief and serves long toshikoshi soba noodles on New Year’s Day.

Seafood –  In Japan, herring roe is consumed for fertility, shrimp for long life, and dried sardines for a good harvest. Fish swim forward, and their scales are believed to symbolize silver.  Another superstition is that, since many fish swim in schools and lay lots of eggs at one time, it is a sign of abundance.

Donuts – The Dutch love to eat a donut on New Year’s Day because they believe that the circular food item symbolizes the full circle of life.

Black Elucky-new-years-food-01-slyed Peas–  Considered a common good-luck food in the South since they swell when cooked, symbolize prosperity, black-eyed peas are thought to bring prosperity, especially when served on a bed of collard greens.

Greens – The color green symbolizes luck — think about four-leaf clovers, dollar bills, and jade jewelry. As if that’s not enough, eating a plate full of greens (kale, green beans, and Brussels sprouts) will start your year off on a healthy note.

Pork– pigs symbolize progress & its rich fat content signifies wealth and prosperity.  Roast suckling pig is served for New Year’s in Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, and Austria and Austrians are known to decorate the table with miniature pigs made of marzipan.

Pomegranates –  are eaten in Turkey and other Mediterranean countries for luck in the new year. It is symbolic of abundance and fertility.progress & its rich fat content signifies wealth and prosperity.  Roast suckling pig is served for New Year’s in Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, and Austria and Austrians are known to decorate the table with miniature pigs made of marzipan.

Lentils – Thought to resemble coins, lentils are eaten throughout Italy on New Year’s Day to bring good fortune in the year ahead.

Cornbread – Said to symbolize gold, cornbread is a popular New Year’s southern tradition. To ensure extra luck, some people add extra corn kernels, emblematic of golden nuggets. Some like to use a drizzle of honey or honey butter as a topping on their cornbread, due to its golden color, to add even more luck.

Citrus–  In China, oranges and tangerines are placed on the table for the New Years meal. This could be because “orange” and “tangerine” sound very much like “wealth” and “luck” in the Chinese language.lucky-new-years-food-05-sl

Cakes–  Round shaped cakes and breads are eaten all over the world on New Years day-  a symbol of coming full circle. In most countries, a coin or a trinket is hidden inside the cake. The recipient to get that slice is said to have good fortune all year long.

What Not to Eat:

Just as there are lucky foods, there are also some foods that carry the stigma of bringing bad luck, so be warned:

Lobster– they move backwards and could therefore lead to setbacks

Chicken– they scratch for food so those who eat poultry will “scratch” for food all year.

Winged fowl– because good luck could fly away!

White foods – The Chinese avoid eggs, cheese, and tofu, because white is the color of death.

Wishing you a happy and healthy new year!

December 24, 2022 By Dayton937

The City of Dayton’s sustainability efforts are getting noticed.

Power a Clean Future Ohio, a statewide, non-partisan coalition, has acknowledged Dayton with three awards:

  • The Climate Action Community Award recognizes Dayton’s “Strategy for a Sustainable Dayton,” the City’s comprehensive sustainability plan.
  • The Clean Energy Community Award recognizes Dayton’s 100% renewable energy electric aggregation program.
  • The Energy Justice Champion Award recognizes Dayton’s commitment and actions to achieve energy justice for all Dayton residents.

Meg Maloney, City of Dayton sustainability specialist, was also presented the Clean Energy Staff Champion award for her leadership and dedication to building a clean energy future for Dayton.

Mayor Jeffrey Mims accepted the awards on behalf of the City of Dayton at a Dec. 16 awards ceremony co-hosted by Power a Clean Future Ohio and the Ohio Mayor’s Alliance. The two organizations highlighted these initiatives as the driving reasons behind Dayton’s recognition:

  • Work to install solar generation facilities at the former Kittyhawk Golf Center.
  • Partnering with local organizations to tackle energy burdens on residential households.
  • The equity commitment in the City’s sustainability plan and budgeting process.

Dayton was one of Power a Clean Future Ohio’s founding cities; the coalition now consists of more than 40 cities. For more information on Dayton’s sustainability plan, go to daytonohio.gov/sustainability.

ArriveSafe Program is Back For The Holiday

December 21, 2022 By Dayton937

Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. announced that his ArriveSafe program will be offered over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weekends, thanks to the continued support from Heidelberg Distributing/Budweiser and Key-Ads.

Prosecutor Heck said, “I am happy to announce that over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, there were no fatal traffic crashes in Montgomery County. In large part because so many in our community made the smart choice and did not get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol and instead used ArriveSafe. I am proud to announce that 189 people got home safely by getting a free Uber ride home.”

Prosecutor Heck noted that his ArriveSafe Program has provided nearly 8,600 free rides home for Montgomery County residents since the program was started in 2007.

Over the past five years, due to a deadly combination of drug and alcohol-impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and excessive speed, Ohio motorists had over 78,000 OVI-related traffic crashes, which resulted in more than 3,000 fatalities.

ArriveSafe will be offering free Uber rides home for Montgomery County residents over Christmas from 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 23, 2022, through 6:00 a.m. Monday, December 26, 2022, and again over New Year’s, from 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2022 through 6:00 a.m. Monday, January 2, 2023. Those residents who need a ride home can scan the QR code at www.mcpo.com which will add a voucher to their Uber account.

Prosecutor Heck added, “Let’s work together and make sure there are no fatal traffic crashes in Montgomery County this Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Let ArriveSafe provide you with a free ride home.”
