Jazz Spotlight: Randy Fankell + Upcoming Jazz Feb. 27 – Mar. 12

Happy February 27th; Jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon was born on this day in 1923, he was among the earliest tenor players to adapt the bebop musical language of people like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie.  Click here for more information.

Who is Randy Fankell:

I have known and followed Randy Fankell for many years and to this day, he is one of my favorite jazz drummers.

Randy has played drums for mRandy Fankell DMM clipore than four decades, making his professional debut at 18 years of age with the Steve Adams Blues Band.  Following a brief stint in college, Randy opted for education “on the road” spending the 70’s and part of the 80’s traveling and performing with a variety of bands and show groups.  Traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada included working in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Chicago, and many other major venues.  Randy has also performed in Aruba, Norway, Finland and Germany.

In the mid-80’s, Randy settled in Dayton, OH and started to pursue his real love in music – Jazz.  Randy has performed with an array of artists such as Grammy-Winning composer, pianist and recording artist Bill Cunliff, and master bassist, the late great Dave Carpenter whose credits include Buddy Rich and Peter Erskine.  Randy also played with recording artist Randy Villars, Tony Monaco and Doug Simon (Jack McDuff).  From 2003 to 2010 Randy was the house drummer at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dayton, OH, performing with a variety of artists.

After years of professional musicianship as a ‘sideman’, Randy has moved into the leadership role with the Randy Fankell Jazz Trio/Quartet and has had numerous performances in local venues to include Wright State University and The Crowne Plaza Hotel, downtown Dayton.

WDPS-FM is Dayton’s only jazz radio station. A non-commercial radio station; however, they do accept underwriting. They broadcast from the new David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center in downtown Dayton. The station is staffed by students and the following volunteers: Clay “The Cooker” Collins, Paul and Patti Gehred, Charles “The Ice Man” Stone, Kyle Fisk and Amanda Romero, Slammin’ Steve Wilson, Clifford Darrett, Jim Woodford, Mike Reisz, George Balog, Jazz Cat & Deb, ChrisSmith and program manager Chris “Hippie” Hartley.

4 years ago as we were preparing to move to our new studios at the David H. Ponitz career technology center. We decided to make a change in the format of the district’s radio station. When exploring the radio dial in Dayton I found that there was an underserved group of listeners; Jazz was just not getting its due in Dayton radio.

I made the announcement that The Dayton Public Schools’ radio station would become “All Jazz All the Time.” To begin to promote the new format I sought the advice of two people, Ron Gable of Jazz Advocate and Clay “The Cooker” Collins. After our first meeting we formed a partnership that i feel has benefited the Dayton Schools, Jazz Advocate and the local Dayton Jazz Scene. That partnership has sprouted many projects including, work with the Gabriel Foundation, hundreds of hours of on air promotion of local jazz events, free Jazz Listener Appreciation Concerts and much more.

One of the most noted outgrowths of that initial meeting is Clay “The Cooker” Collins being back on the radio in Dayton! Clay is an incredible talent who volunteers to be on the air each weekday and assist with the training of our students in radio broadcasting. Just the ability to interact with someone of his caliber and experience is a tremendous advantage for Dayton students. At the end of the day WDPS is still a teaching tool of the Dayton Public Schools. Students in The Radio & Television Broadcasting Class at Ponitz work on all aspects of running the radio station and web stream. From on air talent, to spot production, to preparing the broadcast logs. It is all about the students! Giving them exposure to Jazz is a great thing! They come to us thinking they will not like Jazz and leave our program with jazz favorites and a bit of knowledge of the jazz greats.

I encourage everyone to listen to WDPS-FM 89.5 Monday through Friday from 9:15 until 4:30 and 24 hours a day on WDPSFM.com.

Bill BurnsWho is Bill Burns?

William (Bill) Burns is a Jazz Educator and Performer from Centerville Ohio: He is a music educator for the Centerville City Schools and president of the Jazz Education Connection of Ohio,  a freelance saxophonist and recording artist.

Bill is an active educator and performer across southwest Ohio and teaches elementary general music and Jazz Ensemble in Centerville City Schools. He holds a B.A. in Music Education from the University of Dayton and Masters in Saxophone from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Bill is an in-demand clinician across southwest Ohio and has been invited to present at the national Jazz Education Convention and the Ohio Music Education Association conventions. He also maintains a busy performance schedule. Bill has recorded with numerous groups including the CCM Jazz Ensemble, The Dayton Jazz Orchestra, and the Bill Burns Quartet. The Dayton Art Institute will present their 2013 Vectren Jazz & Beyond season on the second Thursday of the month this year. The schedule is as follows:

Performances take place 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the intimate setting of the museum’s Shaw Gothic Cloister. Admission is FREE for museum members and $8 for non-members.

Over the years many big bands have played at Jazz Central and back in the day they even had their own band. It’s my understanding their band was mostly made up of Air Force players and they always had a grate time playing the music they loved. Coming up on Thursday, January 17 that very same music is returning to Jazz Central. This is because club owner Charles Stone had saved the original charts and Mike Rinderle had the idea of getting a band together to fill in the spot of the vacationing Generations Big Band. Well Mike has assembled some of the very best players in our area:

Happy January 2nd!  American jazz singer Arthur Prysock, best known for his live shows and his baritone influenced by Billy Eckstine was born on this day in 1929.

JazzJamWhat is a Jazz Jam?

In simple terms a jam session is a musical act where musicians play by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. A regular jazz jam is usually sponsored by a venue where this is a predefined core group of paid regulars and any and all musicians who care to come and join in are welcome. The guest musicians or vocalist would need to check or sign in with the event MC to maintain a good performing balance.

There are regular ongoing jams in Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus, which are known well enough to draw guest performers both local and many times from out of town. Like I tell everyone, every chance I get, “Many times, depending upon who shows up, you get some of the very best jazz at jams!” Last Sunday at Jazz Central proved to be the case when the Slaughter Brothers, Clarence (saxophone) and William (trumpet) showed up to jam. Over the years many young jazz players have cut their teeth on Jazz Central’s stage, which has been home to Dayton’s longest running jazz jam.

The Slaughter brothers, who have been doing big things in South Carolina and New Orleans, are home for the holidays and we were treated to a rare performance. In addition to the Slaughters we had Kenny Baccus on organ, John Hampton Wagner as MC as well as trumpet and vocals and Greg Webster on drums, Clifford Darrett and Ahmed Abdullah on congas, and Ron Appleberry on bass as the basic jam core group. Additional guest performers included David Jenkins on saxophone and Darren Witherspoon on drums, two young Stivers School of the Arts students who were new to the jam sessions. Rounding out the evening were vocalist Jeff Ward and Always Triple, trombonist Mushandi Pillow, saxophonist Grant Koeller and drummers Henry Preston and Ismail Muhammad as well as Jack Hart on organ and Jerry Cox on flute. If I haven’t missed anyone (hopefully I’m correct on the spellings) there were eighteen on stage during the evening; what entertainment for a mere $2.00 cover charge.

Clarence started playing on the Jazz Central stage at age 12, was one of the Serious Young Musicians that played Showtime at the Apollo and has performed with some of today’s biggest names in New Orleans. Younger brother William Patrick who also grew up at the club is currently based in the South and comes back to us as a professional player of unbelievable skill. It’s my understanding that the brothers will be with us trough next Sunday’s jam and Clarence is scheduled to be part to Saturday’s “Secret! Master Sergeant Cameron R. Voorhees is a Guitarist with the United States Air Force Band of Flight’s Concert Band, Night Flight, and Prism Brass, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Cameron is one of many Band of Flight members both past and present who make a tremendous impact in our local jazz scene.

Sergeant Voorhees was born and raised in Leavenworth, KS, where he began studying guitar in the fourth grade. He graduated from LeavenworthSenior High School in 1976 and continued his studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Sergeant Voorhees graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Composition.

Sergeant Voorhees enlisted in the United States Air Force in August of 1992 and completed tours with Air Force Bands at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, and Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. He began his current assignment with the USAF Band of Flight in August 2004. In addition to his performance duties, he serves as Unit Security Manager and Operations Representative.

A couple of years ago I met Cameron at Jazz Central where he was a regular part of their jazz jams for a period of time. One thing led to another and he helped me book the Band of Flight Nighthawk Jazz Combo (one of the groups of which he was a member), for Jazz Advocate’s 2011 Jazz & Peace Festival that we held in Centerville at Stubbs Park.

I just recently receive an email announcement: Cameron will be retiring from 21 years in the USAF in January of 2013. Cameron has had a great career over the past 21 years and has done some amazing things.  We are very proud of him and wish to celebrate his career. His official ceremony will be on Friday, January 25, 2013 here in Ohio at the base. He will be missed and we wish him the best in the next chapter of his life. In his spare time, Sergeant Voorhees is active in his local church and enjoys spending time with his family, studying the Bible and playing jazz in the local community.

Roderick Wilson, Eddie Brookshire and Jack Novotny at Jazz Central

What do Johnny Lytle, Lady Day, Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Dizzy Gillespie have in common?

These are names of some of the great jazz legends who contributed music that formed much of the backbone of jazz in our nation. This is also the list of artists who have had tribute concerts held in their honor at Jazz Central over the last sixteen months. All as part of the resurgence of jazz in Dayton, Ohio by our local talented jazz performers.

The latest example was last Saturday, December 1st. when Roderick Wilson and Friends: Roderick – trumpet, Jack Novotny – saxophone, Archie McPherson – keyboard, Eddie Brookshire – base, Fenton Sparks – drums and Cliff Darrett – congas paid tribute to Dizzy Gillespie one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time. September a year ago Mark Smarelli paid tribute to Springfield, Ohio native vibraphonist Johnny Lytle, then Teresa Moneé Gill did a Gabriel Foundation benefit tribute to Lady Day (Billie Holiday) in October of 2011. Next came Grant Koeller doing Charlie Part justice on his saxophone December a year ago and then came trumpeter Wade Baker paying homage to Clifford Brown in January, 2012. In March, 2012 Dean Simms brought Louis Armstrong to life for an entire evening and last October Ronald Hartwell played Benny Goodman while Mark Smarelli played Lionel Hampton.

Each of these events was not only very entertaining but educational and each had a story to tell us about the wonderful history of America’s great art form called Jazz! In addition to tribute concerts Jazz Central has offered many benefit, memorial and face-off concerts; all designed to expose the public to jazz and help keep the art alive. I was told years ago, by one a club owner, when I was writing for another paper that I shouldn’t write about what has happened but only about upcoming events. I disagree; I believe if people read about the fun and great times others had at an event, they will be encouraged to attend some of the great future events coming up:

What is Sinclair Community College?

This could easily be one of those “man bites off more than he can chew” items so lets keep it simple and say what is Sinclair in regards to jazz music. This season Sinclair is offering four Jazz Ensemble concerts with Bruce Jordan conducting and one Jazz Combo concert with Eddie Brookshire directing all in Blair Hall Theatre. Blair Hall is the College’s premiere theatre facility. The facility is an elegant 459-seat proscenium style auditorium that serves the entire community. Located in Building 2 alongWest Fourth Street, Blair Hall Theatre is the home of Sinclair’s Theatre department productions and Music department concerts. Check my local jazz calendar for the dates and times.

Sinclair College is yet another great asset to the Dayton Community that my wife and I, living downtown, like to take advantage of. I’d like to share one of their events that we attended last Saturday.  During their Community Wind Symphony as listed in the program “Concerto for Winds and Piano Right Hand (2012) – Stranger in Paradox with Jeff Hufnagle on piano and Christian Berg on Bass. A little over a year ago I received word that local jazz artist Jeff Hufnagle had a bad stroke, which left him without the use of his entire left side. Imagine how happy I was to have received the following: “Folks, This Is Great News! Jeff will premier Chris Berg’s Piano Concerto with the outstanding Sinclair College Wind Symphony.” An amazing performance with Jeff playing better with one hand than many with both. I also want to share Jeff’s email message: Even though playing the Christian Berg piano concerto is a miraculous milestone on my road to recovery, full recovery; playing with both hands, walking unassisted, driving a car, are still probably years down the road for me. Working with Chris and the Sinclair wind symphony has made me feel like a musician again and has certainly had a beneficial effect on me. Repairing the severe damage that was done to my brain is a slow and painful process that can’t be rushed I expect no miracles. The love and support of the local music community has kept me from sinking into the abyss. Peace, Jeff.

Jazz Spotlight: Taylor Moore + Upcoming Local Jazz Nov. 7-20

Happy November 7th; The American trumpeter and bandleader Al Hirt was born on this day in 1922.

Because many people in our area may not know some of the better local jazz artists who perform regularly in our area I’ve been doing a “Who Is” opening in each of my recent articles. I’m deviating slightly in this article with a performer from Chicago:

Who is Taylor Moore?

I have seen this young lady perform twice recently at Jazz Central and was so impressed I decided to showcase her in this month’s Gabriel Foundation benefit concert this Saturday, November 10th.

While in kindergarten, she entered an Afro-centric after school program that offered the rhythms that had always been a part of her. Over the years, Taylor honed her skills playing classical music pieces as a member of the Kenwood Academy H. S. Concert and Marching bands. Her classical music training also included playing with the Protégé Philharmonic and the All-City Concert Band in Chicago, Illinois.

A lover of all kinds of music, this talented young lady branched out into jazz in her sophomore year, playing with the Kenwood Jazz Band and the Jazz Links Ensemble. Taylor was identified as a gifted percussionist and was a scholar in the Ravinia Jazz Scholars program in the Chicago Public School system.
This percussion phenomenon recently made her debut at The Jazz Showcase in Chicago, a premier venue which has featured such jazz luminaries as Art Blakey, James Moody and Charlie Parker, among many. Taylor one of the youngest headliners ever at the club and one of the city’s most sought-after musicians also performed at this year’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival.

Taylor Moore has played with a multitude of great musicians like percussionist Shelia E., singer Patrice Rushen, world-class drummer Ndugu Chancler, jazz pianists Willie Pickens, Ken Chaney and Robert “Baabe” Irving III, gospel greats Andrae Crouch and Sandra Crouch, jazz singers Kurt Elling and Maggie Brown, legendary jazz organist Rueben Wilson, and blues guitarist Clarence Spadey. She has also been mentored by music legends such as world renowned percussionist/drummer, Steve Berrios and Grammy Award-Winning vocalist, Cassandra Wilson, just to name a few.

A college graduate, Taylor received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance (Jazz Drumset) and Production from theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on May 15, 2011.

The rhythm that attracted Taylor Moore from infancy has become an integral part of her life. Her drumming has been called “crisp, passion-filled, expressive and all consuming.”

Jazz Spotlight: Phil DeGreg + Upcoming Local Jazz Oct. 24 – Nov. 6

Happy October 24th; Well You Needn’t – First recorded for Blue Note (549) on October 24, 1947, it is one of Thelonious Monk’s most recorded and most popular tunes, and a very good example of Monk’s penchant for chromatic harmonic motion.

Who is Phil DeGreg?

Phil DeGreg began playing the piano in his childhood and now performs as a jazz pianist internationally. His earliest jazz influences were Bud Powell and Bill Evans, but he is accomplished and comfortable in a wide range of jazz styles, ranging from mainstream to bebop to Brazilian jazz. His versatility has led to professional performances with dozens of internationally recognized jazz artists, as well as leading and recording with his own groups. Phil DeGreg has released nine recordings as a leader and has been recorded as a sideman on many other jazz projects.

A native of Cincinnati, Phil completed a degree in psychology from Yale University before becoming a professional musician. After three years working and studying music in Kansas City, he finished a masters degree atUniversity of North Texas, and subsequently toured the world for a year with Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd. Later he was the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts grants. He was named one of the 10 finalists in Jazziz Magazine’s 1995 “Keyboardists on Fire” competition, and was a 1996 finalist in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition. Phil has performed in clubs and concerts throughout the United States, and in the United Kingdom,France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Brazil.

Phil considers music to be a gift and is dedicated to sharing his love of jazz through teaching. Phil was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to lecture about jazz in Brazil, which he did for three months in the spring of 2008. He is currently Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, where he teaches jazz theory, arranging, piano, and ensembles. He has taught for the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops (since 1982), the UK Jazzwise Jazz Camps (since 1996) and has served on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, the Miami Valley Summer Jazz Workshops, and the Jim Widner Jazz Camps.

Who is Ronald Hartwell?

     Ronald Hartwell has been performing, teaching and enjoying music for over thirty-five years. He regularly entertains audiences in formal and informal settings. Currently he performs in Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati areas of Ohio. I’ve seem him lead all size groups from his Different Hats Big Band at RiverScape to jazz jams for young players at the BRD House in Englewood. He is the hardest working musician and educator that I have the pleasure of knowing. He never ceases to amaze me in his ability to play virtually every instrument he picks up as well as being a credible vocalist. He combines a deep love of traditional music from across Europe and the Americas with a flair for innovation, improvisation and composition. He is equally at home performing musical theater and jazz laced rendition of popular songs as he is in the concert hall. Performances regularly include the best of Broadway, Jazz Classics, and gems from the rich heritage of North / Central / South America and Europe.

     Ronald Hartwell has studied historical art music of North America and Europe at the University of Arizona, jazz, theater and composition at Berklee College. His mentors have included Peter Walker (Julliard) for Piano Proficiency Richard Herman (Indiana) Flute, Joseph Viola (Conservatories de Paris – Marcel Mule) Saxophone and Ernest Dalwood (Cambridge – BBC and ESO) Clarinet. In addition to instrumental studies he has studied voice with Carole Forte and acting with Rylan (L.B.) Brenner.

     Upcoming on Saturday, October 20 he is producing, as part of Jazz Central’s resurgence of jazz in Dayton, a tribute to one of the greatest King of Swing legends in history when he plays Benny Goodman and Mark Smarelli plays Lionel Hampton from 8:00 pm to midnight, which will cover the small group music renditions from Goodman’s trios, quartets, quintets and sextets.

Jazz Spotlight: Mike Wade + Upcoming Local Jazz Sept. 26 – Oct. 9

Who is Mike Wade?

Mike Wade is currently the Band Director at Withrow High School. He began his journey with the trumpet during his preteen years. While a student at The Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC, he received a National Symphony Scholarship to study with Symphony Trumpeters. Following a year at Howard University, he completed his musical education with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education at Central State University, he then went on to the University of Cincinnati, Conservatory of Music to complete graduate studies in classical trumpet performance.

Professionally, he is no stranger to the titles of producer, composer, arranger, and educator.  He is also the founder and leader of the Standard Time Quintet, Mike Wade & The Jazz Mafia, and the Mike Wade Reality Band. Mike Wade can blow his trumpet in hard bop style, hence his nickname “Shorty Bop”, and he can also play funky grooves that make you want to swing.  Wade has been prolific in performing, recording, composing, producing and arranging. He has recorded three CD’s under his name; “Standard Time”, “The Broach Approach”, and “Reality.”  A fourth CD is currently in the works, all of which features new arrangements of straight-ahead standards and original compositions.

Mike is no stranger to the Dayton scene having performed with the Sinclair College Jazz Ensemble at Blair Hall, and numerous times at The Dayton Art Institute and Gilly’s.
On Saturday, October 6 he is bringing a quartet to Jazz Central consisting of Mike Wade (trumpet), Dr. William Menefield (piano), Anthony “T” Lee (drums) and Brandon Meeks (bass), which will afford local Dayton fans to see a great group from Cincinnati.

Coming Up in Local Jazz – September 12 through September 25

Happy September 12th; the  jazz saxophonist Scott Hamilton was born on this day in 1954.

Who is Ron Jones?

Ron Jones, leader of the Ron Jones Quartet, graduated Cum Laude in 1980 from Florida A & M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. Jones was a member of the world famous FAMU Marching 100 and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity.  Along with teaching 50 private saxophone students per week, Jones and his quartet are in high demand to perform many events in Louisville as well as the surrounding Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, and Illinois area.

Jones is very involved in the world of jazz education. For 10 years Jones taught at the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camps, as well as other camps and Festivals in Ohio and Indiana. He has given jazz improvisation workshops and has been a guest soloist at Ohio State University, Austin Peay State University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Indiana State University, Bradley University, Ball State University, Purdue University, The University of Dayton, St. Louis University, Central Michigan University, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, The University of Kentucky, The University of Evansville, Eastern Kentucky University, Jefferson Community College, and many others.

Jazz Advocate with help from WDPS Radio, Park-N-Go Airport Parking, Kroger, Jazz Central and the Dayton Pizza Factory will produce their sixth benefit concert for the Gabriel Foundation to attain funds for musical instruments for area youth. On Saturday, September 22nd the Ron Jones Quartet from Louisville will perform from 8pm to midnight at Jazz Central 2931 E, 3rd St. in Dayton, Ohio. Tickets, some of which will be given away on WDPS 89.5-FM Radio, are $7.50 advanced and $10 at the door. Jazz Spotlight: Dayton Art Institute + Upcoming Local Jazz Aug 29 – Sept 11

What is the Dayton Art Institute?

Founded in 1919, The Dayton Art Institute is one of the country’s premier fine arts museums and a major asset to our fair city. In addition to exhibiting outstanding special exhibitions and impressive collections of art from throughout the world, the museum is renowned for education programming that includes an array of offerings for diverse audiences.

The Dayton Art Institute also hosts concerts, family and youth programs, classes, social events and more. Of most interest to local jazz fans is the Vectren Jazz & Beyond series, upcoming on September 6 they will present the Rob Dixon Quartet. The local Dayton Public School radio station, WDPC 89.5-FM provides their disc jockeys, on a rotating basis to help MC these events.

Vectren Jazz & Beyond showcases some of the best and brightest local and regional jazz performers … and more! Performances take place on the first Thursdays of March – June and August – November (no performance in July). All performances are 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the intimate setting of the museum’s Shaw Gothic Cloister.  Admission is FREE for museum members and $8 for non-members. Cash Bar is available for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets may be purchased at the museum the night of the performance.

Jazz Spotlight: Who is JD Allen?

Tenor saxophonist JD Allen who along with Sonny Rollins, was one of four performers nationwide this year to be nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association for Tenor Saxophonist of the Year.  Hailed by The New York Times as “elegant and hard-driving” in his style, JD Allen’s 2011 album “Victory!” (Sunnyside) landed in the top three list of NPR’s Best Jazz of 2011 selections and rave reviews in jazz national media. Climbing the ranks of New York City’s scene in recent years, Allen’s career has seen cultivating engagements in Manhattan’s haven clubs such as Village Vanguard, alongside performers like legendary vocalist Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Lester Bowie, Ron Carter, Jeremy Pelt and Jack DeJohnette.

One of the brightest and most unique voices on sax today, who Bloomberg writes “channels Coltrane”, Allen performs internationally with his sax-bass-drums trio and has a sixth album under his belt in 2012’s “The Matador and the Bull” (Savant). Known for his intense and uncluttered sound on the instrument, JD Allen was the winner of DownBeat magazine’s Critics Poll for “Rising Star” in 2011 for tenor saxophone.

Possessing a thoughtful rigor towards the craft, and having established a recognizable sense of innovation in composition, JD Allen (a native of Detroit) joins with Midwestern friends for a 10pm show this Saturday, August 18th at The De’Lish Cafe, which is located in the heart of downtown Dayton’s Arts District next to the Schuster Center.

Jazz Spotlight: Gene Walker + Upcoming Local Jazz – August 1-14

Three veteran musicians and the owner of an iconic club are among the latest to be recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as Jazz Masters: Saxophonist Lou Donaldson, pianist-songwriter Mose Allison and Latin jazz bandleader Eddie Palmieri join the owner of New York City’s Village Vanguard, Lorraine Gordon, as the 2012 recipients of the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy.

Many people in our area may not know who some of the better jazz artists who perform locally on a regular basis.  The following is my attempt to rectify this shortcoming:

Jazz Spotlight: Who is Gene Walker?

Walker, Eugene tenor sax; He got his BME at The Ohio State University. Solo performances have included many notable musicians and entertainers such as Brook Benton, Wilson Picket, Aretha Franklin, Etta Jones, Benny Green, Wild Bill Davis, Bobby Shew, Jimmy Scott, Charles Earland, Lloyd Price, Jimmy Reed, The Isley Brothers, Neil Diamond, Melba Moore, Billy Daniels, Charli Persip, Elvin Jones and Irene Reid.  Jazz saxophonist, composer, bandleader, studio recording and educator Gene Walker lives in Columbus, Ohio where he currently performs with his own groups, Gene Walker’s Generations and The Cotton Club Orchestra. He began performing and touring in 1958 with such groups as Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and The Chris Columbo Quintet. In 1965 he toured with the Beatles, playing in Shea Stadium along with King Curtis.

Gene was a member of the faculty of Ohio State University, held three Ohio Arts Council residencies and has taught saxophone yearly in Jamey Aebersolds’ Summer Jazz Clinics since 1998.  He’s toured Italy, England, the Netherlands with the Jimmy McGriff Quartet, playing at the prestigious London Club, Ronnie Scott’s, and in 1997 Gene performed with the Hank Marr Quartet at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland. In addition, he has made a number of distinguished appearances, including at Carnegie Hall and Town Hall, NY; Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London, U.K.; North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, Holland; and Umbria Jazz Festival, Italy.  Recently Gene Walker and jazz organist Hank Marr were honored during a ceremony at the Lincoln Theatre Walk of Fame in Columbus. The Lincoln Theatre Walk of Fame honors Columbus natives who have made outstanding contributions in their respective professional careers. You will be able to catch this outstanding jazz saxophonist on Saturday, August 1 when he performs a benefit concert at Jazz Central in Dayton for the Gabriel Foundation.

Thursday August 2 – is again big band night with Joe Aceto and his Orchestra at Riverscape MetroPark and the Dayton Jazz Orchestra performs at the Dayton Art Institute.

Friday August 3 – Catch the Shawn Stanley Trio at Carvers Steaks & Chops in Centerville and in London, Ohio (not too far away) there’s a Jazz & Rib Fest on Friday and Saturday (Aug 4) details at: https://www.facebook.com/LondonRibandJazzFest

Saturday August 4 – Deron Bell’s Smooth Jazz Band will be at Riverscape MetroPark, JT Fredrick’s Sax Groove will be at Gilly’s in Dayton and can catch Dave Koz with special guest BeBe Winans at the Fraze Pavilion in Kettering.

Sunday August 5 – the Hoo Doo Soul Band plays the Rumba Café in Columbus and Jazz Central’s regular Jazz Jam continues in Dayton.

Monday August 6 -Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra is at the Clintonville Woman’s Club in Columbus and the John Taylor Trio is at the Brio Tuscan Grille in Beavercreek.

Tuesday August 7 – the Part St. Tavern has a Jazz Jam and Tony Monaco Trio is at the Rumba Café in Columbus and Ed Moss & the Society Jazz Orchestra is at Schwartz’s Point in Cincinnati.

Wednesday August 8 – Blue Wisp Big Band performs at the Blue Wisp in Cincinnati, Rich Lopez is at Rigsby’s in Columbus and Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers holds fort at Neil’s Heritage House in Dayton.

Thursday August 9 – Riverscape Metro Parks presents Pam Noah and Her Big Band and the Retrospect Jazz Quartet featuring Elisabeth Hayse is at Jazz Central in Dayton.

Friday August 10 – Doc Broadnax and the Thompson House in Newport presents Ralph Peterson Fo’tet with Edwin Bayard.

Saturday August 11 – World-class jazz saxophonist Gene Walker will perform a benefit concert for the Gabriel Foundation at Jazz Central in Dayton and George Benson is at the Fraze in Kettering.

Sunday August 12 – Phil DeGreg Trio performing at Dee Felice in Covington, Ky. and Jazz Central offers its regular Jazz Jam in Dayton.

Monday August 13 – Sandy Suskind continues their long running jazz jam at the Blue Wisp in Cincinnati and Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra is at the Clintonville Woman’s Club in Columbus.

Tuesday August 14 – Derek DiCenzo Trio plays at Local Roots in Powell, OH
