Human Reunion releases Carbonics 7″

May 27, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

This Friday night is your chance to celebrate yet another great release from one of our local bands.  Human Reunion will unveil their new 7″ inch, Carbonics at their show at Blind Bob’s.  There will be a limited number of white-vinyl copies available at the show as well as standard editions on gold vinyl from Detroit’s Five Three Dial Tone Records.  Also available that evening is Prelude to A Miss Volume 1.  This is the first installment of a cassette series from Five Three Dial Tone and will feature demos and instrumental versions of songs from Carbonics.

If the music collector in you isn’t already lining up for this show, then the rest of the lineup will have you sold.  Human Reunion will be joined onstage by the Motel Beds (who just sent their new album Feelings off to press) and Pittsburgh’s Summer Lungs.

First Friday in music

May 5, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

First Fridays are always full of activity and opportunities to enjoy some of the best our area has to offer.  This month is no exception.  Here’s just a taste of the musical offerings this Friday night:

Canal Street Tavern will host three great local bands: The Black Who’s?, Fuzz Hound and 2006 Dayton Band Playoff winners, Orange Willard.  The show starts at 9:30pm and is $5

The Rubbles will bring their 60’s style rock and roll to Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District, starting at around 8pm.

Down the street at the Trolley Stop, the Curious Animals will hit the stage around 9:30pm.

If you prefer your music with a seafood dinner, Puzzle of Light will perform at Jay’s Restaurant from 9pm until midnight.  You can just come for dessert or a drink and, of course the music, but if you’re going to do dinner, call ahead for a reservation (937-222-2892).

Or if you feel like taking a drive out to Yellow Springs, Sohio will be headlining Peaches Grill with the Black Owls starting at around 9pm.

What are your musical plans for Friday night?  Do you know of another great that’s not on this list?  Share it in the comments!

April 27, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

MotelVegaFriday is the last day of the month, and if you feel like celebrating with some great music, Blind Bob’s is the place to be.  The Motel Beds will take a break from working on their highly anticipated new album, Feelings, to share the stage with New Vega.  They’ll also be welcoming Cincinnati’s Roger Klug to town.  Klug’s latest album, More Help for Your Nerves, made the rounds on quite a few Best of 2009 lists.  Former Captain of Industry front-man Nathan Peters will round out a great night of music with a solo set.

8-Bit Revival and the Lab Partners to Release Albums on April 2

March 16, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

8bitRevivalA while ago I had predicted that 2010 would be a big year for local music and between what’s already been released this year and what’s coming up, I stand by that prediction.  Two big names in local music are teaming up for a joint release show on April 2nd at Blind Bob’s.

8-Bit Revival (pictured on the left) will unveil their second full-length album, You’ve Been Believed (Minor Manor) as they prepare to kick off a spring tour.  The Lab Partners will celebrate the release of their latest album, Moonlight Music (Pravda Records).  They’ll share the stage with Middletown’s  Okay Lindon.

8-Bit Revival will also stop by WYSO’s studios on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) for a live performance on Kaleidoscope (8-11pm).

Ed vs. Radio is Back

February 11, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

EVR--Flyer-2-13-2Ed vs. Radio was a big name in local music between 2004 and 2006 when band members decided to pursue individual interests.   Toward the end of last year, there were rumblings of the band’s return, and I’m happy to report that Ed vs. Radio is indeed back in action.  Original members Jason Gilmore (guitar and vocals) and Jeff Coates (drums) will be joined by James Daniels on bass and Jasper the Colossal’s Paige Bellar on vocals.

Ed vs. Radio will be playing an all-ages show at the Attic in Kettering on Saturday, February 13. The following Friday (Feb 19th), they’ll hit the stage at Blind Bob’s with Me & Mountains, The Javeline Dance, and 8-Bit Revival.  As a prelude, the band will be playing live on Kaleidoscope on Wednesday, February 10 beginning at 8pm on WYSO.

Boonshoft Museum’s Pub Science Series Explores Nanotechonolgy

February 5, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

nanotech

Concept of micro-bug repairing red blood cells

Imagine a world where microscopic organisms roam the human body, devouring harmful cholesterol and fats within the bloodstream.

Now envision a scenario in which  super-small enzymes are deployed to quickly and safely consume hazardous materials like oil spills or nuclear wastes.

Sounds like something out of a movie or a sci-fi novel, right?

Well, science fiction is rapidly becoming science fact as nanotechnology is poised to transform the worlds of medicine, health care and consumer electronics.

MurrayTerry

P. Terry Murray, Ph.D

Explore the technology that will make this possible with nanotech expert P. Terry Murray, Ph.D.  Murray, a scientist at the University of Dayton Research Institute.  He will be the guest speaker for the next “Pub Science” presentation, a monthly series of informal learning programs sponsored by the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.

The series, which kicked off last December, was created as a fun way for anyone to learn about science and technology in a relaxed, informal setting. Previous topics discussed were cryopreservation and forensic science.

Pub Science-Nanotechnology is Feb. 9 UPDATE Feb. 16 , at  Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. and will continue until all audience questions are answered.

Admission is free, though donations are encouraged.

Smug Brothers, Motel Beds, and John Gassett Unveil New Albums at Blind Bob’s

February 3, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

It’s certainly a cause for celebration whenever a local artist releases a new album, but on Saturday, February 6th, the excitement will be tripled.  The Smug Brothers, the Motel Beds and John Gassett will each be releasing a new album that night at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District.  Toads and Mice will round out what’s sure to be a great night of live music.

20537_243124511706_117612601706_3725853_794707_nWhether you’re a longtime fan of Dayton’s music scene or this will be your first show downtown, Saturday is going to be a great opportunity to add 3 local albums to your music collection.  I’ve mentioned before that I think 2010 is going to be a big year for music in Dayton, and this seems like a really solid start.

The Smug Brothers and the Motel Beds will also be playing an acoustic set live on Kaleidoscope on Wednesday, Feb 3rd beginning at 8pm and talking about their new albums.  You can catch Kaleidoscope every Wednesday night (8-11pm) on WYSO 91.3FM or online at wyso.org.
