Big Easy Ways to Celebrate Fat Tuesday

March 7, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

Down in New Orleans  Fat Tuesday is a major event — parades, food, costumes and such run through Mardi Gras. Dayton may not have the parades and but we’ve sure  been known to get into the Big Easy swing of things itself. If you’re looking for a place to take on some Cajun grub and party down, here’s where the beads will be flying:

Rue Dumaine is letting Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!!!!  They’ve ordered in lots of Oyters, made homemade hurricanes and are hosting at ABITA BREWING COMPANY  beer tasing featuring Abita S.O.S Charitable Pilsner, Restoration Ale
and Mardi-Gras Bock -$12 includes the beers and  an Amuse-Bouche prepared by the RUE DUMAINE kitchen.

Here’s Chef Anne’s  MARDI GRAS menu 2011 for March 8th:

Louisiana oyster & Gulf shrimp gumbo $6.5
Chilled Creole poached gulf shrimp and mirliton slaw with remoulade dressing-$9
Char-grilled oysters with garlic (4 per order)-$9
Oysters on the half shell-$10.5/half dozen $22/dozen
Pepper jelly glazed chicken livers** over griddled cornbread rusk-$7.5
Smothered chicken quarter with crawfish tails and spinach, served over cheesy grits-$15
Creole braised beef & French fry po-boy dressed with cabbage slaw (y’all are gonna need a napkin or 2 with this one)-$14
Cornmeal crusted catfish with house made tasso-black eyed pea salad and Creole mustard butter sauce-$14
Grilled Andouille sausage with red beans & rice-$13
Bananas Fosters bread pudding with caramel-pecan sauce-$5
Calas (classic Louisiana fried rice fritters) with triple berry jam filling -$5

Reservations are always suggested at Rue Dumaine, locatated at 1061 Miamisburg Centerville Rd in Washington Township.    Call  610-1061 for more info.

The Winds in Yellow Springs celebrates in style with Fried Oysters, Bananas Foster, Festive Cocktails and lots of Beads.
Reservatations are suggested,  call 937.767.1144

A trip to Troy may be in order to attend the Mardi Gras Ball at LeDoux’s Restaurant.  For $20 /guest you ‘ll enjoy a Live Dixieland band, dancing, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, beads, games and more. Attendees are encouraged to wear a festive costume and/or mask for a costume contest. Raffle tickets for sale for a trip for two to New Orleans. A portion of the ball admission fee benefits the Piqua Arts Council. Call for reservations at  (937) 875-2000.

The Wine Loft has joined forces with Clothes That Work to host a Fat Tuesday celebration featuring a Dayton’s Best Legs Photo Shoot to kick off the 4th annual Hunks in Heels fundraiser.  For $20 guests get admission, 2 drinks, appetizers and 2 votes for their choice of Dayton’s Best Legs!

Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District invites you to come on out for cajun food specials, hurricane shots, pub science, the malibu girls, live DJs and Ashley will have SUPER SOAKERS FULL OF SHOTS!  Food specials are available all day!

TJ Chumps is hosting a party  with “crazy drink specials” including 75 cent well drinks for the ladies and $2 domestic pints for the guys from 11am – 9pm on Fat Tuesday

Don’t worry if you already have Tuesday booked, McCormick & Schmick’s is hosting a Creole Wine Dinner on Thursday at 6:30pm  $50 includes a four-course Creole menu paired with French wines.  Reservations required, call (937) 431-9765.

If you’re not celebrating out and about, may we suggest you stop by your favorite bakery and and least pick up a King Cake!

History of Mardi Gras King Cake

Hundreds of thousands of King Cakes are eaten during Mardi Gras each year in New Orleans, Louisiana. In fact, a Mardi Gras party would not be authentic without the traditional King Cake as the center of the party.

The cake is made with a rich Danish dough, baked and covered with a sugar topping in Mardi Gras colors; purple representing justice, green representing faith, and gold representing power.

Originally objects such as coins, beans, pecans, and peas were hidden inside of every King Cake. Wealthy Louisiana plantation owners in the later 1800s would sometimes put a precious stone or jewel in their King Cakes. In the mid-1900s, a small plastic baby became the symbol of this Holy Day and was placed inside of each King Cake.

The New Orleans tradition is that each person takes a piece of cake hoping to find the plastic baby inside. The recipient of the plastic baby is “crowned” King or Queen for the day and that person is obligated to host the following year’s party and supply the King Cake.

Here’s to becoming the King or Queen! Cheers!

Music Video Monday: February 28, 2011

February 28, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

This week I decided to offer two music videos for the price of one (so, still free as usual). Both videos come from bands that are playing at Blind Bob’s on (First) Friday night.  Check out the DaytonMostMetro events calendar for more information.

The first comes to us from The Story Changes.  They filmed this music video in Dayton last summer so be on the lookout for familiar faces and places.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPngzpVOycY’]

Our second video comes from Me & Mountains.  In addition to the Blind Bob’s show, they’ll be playing a free show at OMEGA Music for First Friday beginning at 6pm.  Details are for this performance are also at our events calendar.

Me & Moutains, The Seedy Seeds and No No Knots at Blind Bob’s

January 19, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Me & Mountains unveiled their self-titled debut album about six months ago to much acclaim, and lucky for us, they’ve already started on the next one.  There’s no release date yet, but the band is aiming for a spring or summer.  There’s also already some national buzz for the new album as You Indie recently featured an interview with Me & Moutains’ vocalist and bassist, Burris Dixon.  Check out that article here.

You can catch Me & Mountains live at Blind Bob’s tomorrow night (Thursday, January 20).  They’ll be hosting two great Cincinnati bands: The Seedy Seeds and No No Knots.  The Seedy Seeds have played quite a few shows in Dayton over the past few years and are also prepping a new release due to come out in February.  Word has it, they’ll be unveiling some new material at Blind Bob’s.  No No Knots have just released an EP called Quiet to the Night.  You can download it for free here.

Full show details are available at the Dayton MostMetro events calendar.

Here’s one of my favorite tracks from Me & Mountains’ self titled debut album.

Live Music on Friday: Two Best Bets

January 13, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

If you’re looking to see a great show on Friday night, there are quite a few options.  Here are two shows that I’m especially looking forward to:

  • The Dirty Socialites are playing Blind Bob’s along with My Latex Brain and Columbus’ Lollipop Factory.  These three bands put on a really solid rock show on their own this bill promises to be a lot of fun.  Full details here.
  • Earlier this week, I shared a promo video for Friday night’s show at Canal Street Tavern.  This is another great three band bill featuring The Motel Beds along with Floods and Amnesia.  Full details here.

Are you planning on seeing some live music on Friday night?  If so, what shows are you looking forward to?

Boonshoft’s Pub Science Series Continues with the Science of Beer

September 13, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery continues their monthly Pub Science speaker series with a lecture on beer brewing by one of the area’s foremost authorities on the subject.

Mike Schwartz, owner of Belmont Party Supply and Brewtensils, will present “The Art and Science of Beer Brewing” on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 7:00 p.m. at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District.

Schwartz’s “world-recognized” beer store consistently ranks in the top 25 stores nationwide by respected craft beer websites ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com.  He opened Brewtensils, an equipment and supply store for making beer, wine and cheese, in Oct. of this year and conducts various introductory classes aimed at the beginning home brewer.

“I’ll talk about yeast and how it affects your beer,” says Schwartz regarding Tuesday’s presentation.

The Pub Science series, which began in December, was created as a fun way for anyone to learn about science and technology in a relaxed, informal setting. Previous topics discussed were nanotechnology and forensic science.

Pub Science is held the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. There is no cover charge for the event however, donations are accepted.

For additional information, please call (937)275-7431 or check our event calendar!

Three shows for your Thursday

August 18, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

The Black Who's?

Why wait for the weekend to see some live music?  This Thursday our local musicians will be serving up some great tunes at the following shows:

  • The Black Who’s? are hosting two bands from Atlanta at Blind Bob’s.  They’ll be joined onstage by The Biters who are currently touring with The Booze. Take the next 24 hours to practice saying, “I’m going to see The Black Who’s at Blind Bob’s with The Biters and The Booze” five times fast.
  • If you’re craving something harder, South Park Tavern may be the place for you.  Turlock, California hardcore band Verona will be stopping by to play with By Way of Sunstorm, who are finished up their first full length album.
  • The Dayton Band Playoffs are getting down to wire.  Thursday marks the last show of Round 3 and will determine who the last band is to move on to the Semi-finals at Canal Street Tavern.  A Shade of Red and Less Than 3 are on the bill so go out and put your vote in for one of these local bands.

What are your plans for Thursday night?

The Story Changes celebrates Dayton homecoming

August 5, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

The Story Changes have been making tracks across the country for the last 8 weeks on their summer tour with fellow locals, Hawthorne Heights.  The tour wrapped up a few weeks ago, and now the band will celebrate their return to the Gem City with a show this Saturday night at Blind Bob’s.  They’ll be joined onstage by 8-bit Revival, Rad Company and Ed vs. Radio who may be going back into the studio this fall to work on a new album.  It’s a 21+ show that costs $5.

Kuan//M

August 5, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

KUAN08

…while we informed you a while back about Kuan’s upcoming tour of the US that starts tonight in Indianapolis, we just received the band’s upcoming EP, Colors, which the band lovingly hand-crafted and will be taking on out on the road with them. Kuan will celebrate locally upon their return on September 5 with a show at Blind Bob’s. You can hear the track “M” below [which picks up the alphabetical torch from their previous release, Standby/On], which continues to showcase the band’s impeccable craftsmanship: muscular riffing juxtaposing delicate jazzy passages; effortless dynamic shifts; a penchant for math rock intricacies, yet never compromising the composition. If yr anywhere on the tour route of these gentlemen over the next month, we highly recommend you make a point to catch them live…

Auburndale prepping new album/show this Saturday

July 23, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of buzz since Auburndale came back from hiatus this winter and began work on a new album.  That album, Alive in the Dying City, is slated for release this fall.

You can hear a preview of the new album as well as an interview and acoustic set with Auburndale from this week’s edition of Kaleidoscope on WYSO.

You can also see Auburndale live this Saturday night at Blind Bob’s with the Sound for Language, Columbus’ Ships in Masses and Segments who are making their live debut.  This 21+ show is $5 and starts around 9pm.

Here’s some video of the band performing on Kaleidoscope earlier this week.

Marijuana Johnson and By Way of Sunstorm at Blind Bob’s

July 13, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

This Friday night at Blind Bob’s is going to be a loud one.  Dayton’s  Marijuana Johnson and By Way of Sunstorm will be joined onstage by two great touring bands.  Toronto’s Burning Love is currently doing a few US shows before they embark on a huge European tour this fall.  They’re joined by Louisville’s Coliseum at this 21+ show.

Here’s a video of By Way of Sunstorm performing at Blind Bob’s earlier this year from our friends at The Music Seen.

The Turkish Delights release …Ahem!

July 8, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

This time last year, the Turkish Delights had just finished playing Round One of the Dayton Band Playoffs, which they would go on to win in September.  One year later, they’re celebrating the release of their latest album, …Ahem!  with a show at Blind Bob’s.  They’ll be joined onstage Saturday night by Me & Mountains and Toads and Mice.  This 21+ show is $5.

$5 is also the cost of a copy of …Ahem, and it’s well worth it.  The Turkish Delights recorded the album at home, and it features a great variety from the band’s catalog. After the release, the Turks hope to work on a regional tour and will start work on their next album.  For more on the Turkish Delights, and for a preview of the album, check out the interview I did with the band on this week’s Kaleidoscope (WYSO).

The weekend in music starts early

July 7, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

The Fourth of July holiday gave some of us the opportunity to have a short work week.  Looking ahead to this weekend in music, it looks like we’re getting a head start on things with several great shows slated for Thursday night.

Here’s the rundown:

– South Park Tavern will feature Brooklyn’s the Judy Blooms along with Roley Yuma and Andy Smith of Andrew & the Pretty Punchers.  For those unfamiliar with the Judy Blooms, it’s the brainchild of former Daytonian Jake Geisege who you may remember from the band Wild & Free.  This all-ages show is $5 and begins around 9pm.

– Forgoing the usual Thursday open mic night for a week, Blind Bob’s is featuring an evening of music presented by Poptek Records.  Chicago’s The Love of Everything will join Poptek’s own Kris N on the stage.  Brooklyn’s Vox Humana and local musician (and Blind Bob’s open mic host) Brandon Hawk will round out the bill. This show is 21+ and costs $5.

– If you want to rock out for a cause, head over to Vex.  The Jackalopes will join Jasper the Colossal along with Todd the Fox and Henrique Couto and the Tallywacker Express (members of Splattertude).  The show is a benefit for local filmmaker, Andy Copp’s newest project, Church of the Eyes.  This show is $5 at the door and gets started around 10pm.

-You can also put your vote in for Round One of the Dayton Band Playoffs over at Canal Street Tavern.  Thursday night features performances by The Whataveya, N.P.D., and A Shade of Red.  $3 gets you in the door, and you’ll get to vote on your favorite act during this seeding round of the Playoffs (the top 16 bands move on to Round Two).
