Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving: 3 Great Shows for Wednesday Night

November 23, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Whether you’ve just gotten back into town and are ready to kick start a weekend of old friends, family and food with some music or you just need some good old fashioned rock and roll to prepare for Thursday’s feast, there are quite a few great local shows this Wednesday night.  You can check out a full list of Wednesday night happenings on DaytonMostMetro’s Events Calendar, but here are 3 of my best bets for Thanksgiving eve:

  • C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks will be bringing their instrumental guitar-driven boogie to the Tumbleweed Connection in the Oregon District.  They’ll play 3 full sets for only $5 giving you plenty of time to preemptively dance off that turkey and gravy.  Here’s a live track from the band to put you in the mood:

  • Gem City Tattoo Club recently opened on East Third Street, and several local bands will be celebrating by playing a launch party for the new business at South Park Tavern.  The bill includes Me & Mountains, a new collaboration between Kris N and Joe Anderl called Fathers Day and Amusiac.  This show, like all others at South Park Tavern is all-ages.  Here’s a track from Me & Mountains’ debut album for your sampling pleasure:

  • The Psychodots will perform their annual Thanksgiving Eve Concert at Canal Street Tavern beginning at 9pm.  This Cincinnati trio enjoys a healthy fan base here in Dayton, and the Thanksgiving Eve show has become an area tradition.  Here’s a video of one of the band’s earlier performances at Canal Street Tavern:
  • Will you be going out to hear some live music on Wednesday night or staying home to stuff the turkey?  Let us know your plans in the comments!

The Asylum Street Spankers have been making regular stops in Dayton for years.  They’re currently on their Spanks for Everything farewell tour and will play at Canal Street Tavern this Saturday night.  Full show details at the DaytonMostMetro events calendar.

The band lots of amazing footage on their Spanker Vision video page, but one of my favorites is this fan-made video for U.F.O. Attack.

Vanity Theft celebrates homecoming, new EP

November 9, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

The ladies of Vanity Theft have been staying busy this year.  They welcomed bass player, Lalaine earlier in 2010 and have spent the summer and fall touring almost non-stop.  In late October, they released a new EP and embarked on a short Midwestern tour.  That tour will wrap up this Friday night at Canal Street Tavern.  It’s a combination homecoming show and release party for the Anatomy EP.  It’s also the band’s last show of the year.  Word has it, they’ll be prepping a full length album for 2011.  Vanity Theft will be joined onstage by local bands Bonneville and Jasper the Colossal and Minneapolis’ Sick of Sarah.  Full details at the DaytonMostMetro Events Calendar.

Here’s a track from the Anatomy EP:

A Shade of Red unveils Blush

October 29, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

When I met Sean and Georgia of A Shade of Red a few months ago, they were preparing to perform in the semi-finals of the Dayton Band Playoffs and mentioned that they had an album in the works.  That album was Blush, and A Shade of Red will be celebrating its release Friday night at Canal Street Tavern with Orange Willard who will be releasing an EP of their own that night.

Blush highlights the strength of Georgia Goad’s vocals and matches them perfectly with Sean Pennington’s mellow yet still driving drumbeats. The band recorded Blush in their basement studio and says, “With no sound engineers or producers it was a lot of guess work in the studio on the recording technique, so we played around with a lot of ideas on how to get the sounds we wanted. Then we give the tracks to Jarren Nicoletti, who would mix it down and balance it all out. He put a lot of hours in to this for beer and pizza.”

You get a copy of Blush at this evening’s show or visit A Shade of Red’s website to hear a preview and buy the disc online.

BJSR Releases Debut EP

October 20, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Performing under the name BJSR, Ben Rivet has become a staple in the local music scene.  He hosts Monday nights at Therapy Cafe and has been playing a variety of venues around town in support of local and national artists.  Thursday night, Rivet will celebrate the release of his debut EP, AXE AND VOX at Canal Street Tavern.

Rivet produced the EP himself with Connor Smith and Damon Sink over a ten month period, and ten musicians contributed to the tracks.  The six original songs showcase a variety of styles from simple folk tunes to indie pop.  Rivet says that making the EP has been a learning experience.

“Playing live is very freeing because I can always change up the style of each song each time I play, but I had to make very concrete decisions on the direction of each song for the EP. Doing that really allowed me to break apart and examine my music in a fully instrumentated context. That’s why I titled it AXE AND VOX. For me, it was the process of taking the songs beyond the guitar (axe) and voice (vox).”

You can catch Rivet performing live on 91.3FM WYSO on Wednesday during Niki Dakota’s Excursions (10am-1pm).  For more information on the EP release show featuring performances by BJSR, Bella Ruse, Charles Tipton Jr. and Early Arrial, check out the DaytonMostMetro Events Calendar.

Jesse Remnant and the Trainwrecks

Jesse Remnant and Trainwrecks have been busy prepping a new album, but that hasn’t kept them from performing live shows around town.  This Friday you can catch them at Canal Street Tavern beginning at 9:30pm.  Also on the bill is Shrug (with whom the Trainwrecks share several members).

Check out Jesse Remnant and the Trainwrecks performing their song, Ohio 35 earlier this year.

The Black Who's?

Why wait for the weekend to see some live music?  This Thursday our local musicians will be serving up some great tunes at the following shows:

  • The Black Who’s? are hosting two bands from Atlanta at Blind Bob’s.  They’ll be joined onstage by The Biters who are currently touring with The Booze. Take the next 24 hours to practice saying, “I’m going to see The Black Who’s at Blind Bob’s with The Biters and The Booze” five times fast.
  • If you’re craving something harder, South Park Tavern may be the place for you.  Turlock, California hardcore band Verona will be stopping by to play with By Way of Sunstorm, who are finished up their first full length album.
  • The Dayton Band Playoffs are getting down to wire.  Thursday marks the last show of Round 3 and will determine who the last band is to move on to the Semi-finals at Canal Street Tavern.  A Shade of Red and Less Than 3 are on the bill so go out and put your vote in for one of these local bands.

What are your plans for Thursday night?

July 22, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

This Friday will be your first chance to get a copy of Bonneville’s first full length album, Drawing Maps.  It’s more polished album overall than the band’s previous EPs and shows that this foursome has grown up a lot since their days playing together in junior high.

Here’s the title track:

You can pick up your very own copy and check out Bonneville live at their CD release party Friday night at Canal Street Tavern.  They’ll be joined onstage by Orange Willard with Michael Shoup opening.  The show is 18+ and costs $5.

The weekend in music starts early

July 7, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

The Fourth of July holiday gave some of us the opportunity to have a short work week.  Looking ahead to this weekend in music, it looks like we’re getting a head start on things with several great shows slated for Thursday night.

Here’s the rundown:

– South Park Tavern will feature Brooklyn’s the Judy Blooms along with Roley Yuma and Andy Smith of Andrew & the Pretty Punchers.  For those unfamiliar with the Judy Blooms, it’s the brainchild of former Daytonian Jake Geisege who you may remember from the band Wild & Free.  This all-ages show is $5 and begins around 9pm.

– Forgoing the usual Thursday open mic night for a week, Blind Bob’s is featuring an evening of music presented by Poptek Records.  Chicago’s The Love of Everything will join Poptek’s own Kris N on the stage.  Brooklyn’s Vox Humana and local musician (and Blind Bob’s open mic host) Brandon Hawk will round out the bill. This show is 21+ and costs $5.

– If you want to rock out for a cause, head over to Vex.  The Jackalopes will join Jasper the Colossal along with Todd the Fox and Henrique Couto and the Tallywacker Express (members of Splattertude).  The show is a benefit for local filmmaker, Andy Copp’s newest project, Church of the Eyes.  This show is $5 at the door and gets started around 10pm.

-You can also put your vote in for Round One of the Dayton Band Playoffs over at Canal Street Tavern.  Thursday night features performances by The Whataveya, N.P.D., and A Shade of Red.  $3 gets you in the door, and you’ll get to vote on your favorite act during this seeding round of the Playoffs (the top 16 bands move on to Round Two).

Monte Montgomery at Canal Street Tavern on Saturday

June 2, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Dayton’s in for a treat this Saturday night when Monte Montgomery brings his trademark electrified acoustic guitar music to Canal Street Tavern.  The Austin native will be playing at Bonnaroo later this month, but his music will be right at home in Canal Street’s intimate setting.   Tod Weidner from Shrug will open the show, which begins around 9:30pm (doors open at 8).  Tickets are $14 in advance or $15 on the day of the show.

Here’s a YouTube taste of Monte Montgomery’s music:
