This week’s music video comes to us from Jasper the Colossal. They’ve got a new single called “Back of the Crowd,” and you can catch them live in concert at Gilly’s this Saturday night as part of the Baron’s Ball, a concert put on by the cast and crew of Baron VonPorkchop’s Terrifying Tales of the Macabre on DATV. For more on this concert, check out the Dayton MostMetro Events Calendar.
Music Video Mondays
Music Video Monday: January 31, 2011
Since it’s pretty late on this particular Monday, I tried to choose a music video that would serve you well going into Tuesday. If the Miami Valley does indeed get the ice storm that’s been forecast, tomorrow would be a good day to stay in and catch up on some local music. I recommend setting aside about 10 minutes to check out We Do This Every Week. It’s a documentary by Dayton expats, Angelle Haney Gullett & Steven Gullett about Musician’s Co Op, a Tuesday night tradition at Canal Street Tavern. It may even inspire you to strap on some ice skates and head over to Canal Street tomorrow night to see Co Op in person.
Music Video Monday: January 17, 2011
This Monday finds many of us mourning the loss of Barry Hobart aka Dr. Creep, who passed away on Friday. For more on Dr. Creep’s legacy on local television, I highly recommend J.T.Ryder’s article, Brilliance on the Edge of Night here on Dayton MostMetro. We’re in the process of putting together a tribute show in Dr. Creep’s honor for this week’s Kaleidoscope on WYSO. I’ll pass along more details about that tomorrow here on Dayton MostMetro.
In addition to horror films and hilarious mayhem, Dr. Creep would feature musical guests on his show from time to time. During the New Shock Theatre years, he even recorded an album with the Lawn Jockeys called The Amazing Sounds of Shock Theatre. Today’s music video is a classic episode of the original Shock Theatre series featuring a musical perform by New York band, the Freelance Vandals at the fictional “Famous Les Fern Dance Studio.”
Music Video Monday: January 10, 2011
I had originally planned on doing something else for this week’s video, but once in a while something comes along that’s too good to pass up. This Friday night, January 14th, the Motel Beds are playing a show at Canal Street Tavern with Floods and Amnesia. It promises to be a great show, and you can check out the details at the Dayton MostMetro events calendar.
In addition to the traditional show flier, the Motel Beds took the promotion one step further and created a radio spot which morphed into a video over the weekend. It’s short, but super fun. So check it out, and check all these bands out on Friday at Canal Street.
Music Video Monday: December 13, 2010
….er, Tuesday, December 14th. I’m sorry I’m a bit late this week, and I debated going into the whole story of why. I’ll give you the cliff notes version: there was a show I had heard about that I had considered using for Music Video Monday except that when I went to find the details online, they were nowhere save for a vague reference on the band’s Myspace page. The venue hasn’t updated their calendar in months, and it really makes me sad because I think it’s going to be a great show. Pardon the rant, but the long story short is my plea to both venues and bands – do the very basics to promote yourselves. Please and thank you.
After we ring in the New Year, I’ll be doing a series of posts about that very topic here on DaytonMostMetro.
Onward to today’s video. The Fair Shakes are a fantastic local garage punk band fronted by Nick Kizirnis. They’ll be playing at South Park Tavern on Saturday, December 18th with A Shade of Red. Details on the show are at the Dayton MostMetro events calendar.
Here are the Fair Shakes performing last winter:

Later this week in the Dayton Music section, we’ll be bringing you a holiday shopping guide featuring local record stores (some of which sell movies and video games too). So I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about local record stores and keep coming back to one of my favorites that’s no longer with us, Renaissance Music. So this week’s music video isn’t exactly a music video, but longtime Daytonians will remember these great commercials for one of our great local record stores starring Mr. G.
Music Video Monday: November 15, 2010
The Asylum Street Spankers have been making regular stops in Dayton for years. They’re currently on their Spanks for Everything farewell tour and will play at Canal Street Tavern this Saturday night. Full show details at the DaytonMostMetro events calendar.
The band lots of amazing footage on their Spanker Vision video page, but one of my favorites is this fan-made video for U.F.O. Attack.
Music Video Monday: November 8th, 2010 edition
Last weekend, Team Void rocked and rolled Bar Tiki in the Oregon District. If you weren’t there to experience this amazing live show, here are 9 luchatastic minutes of video to start your week with. Enjoy!

The new month brings lots of excitement, and of course some new albums. On November 13th, Auburndale will be celebrate the release of their highly anticipated new album, Alive in a Dying City. Release show details are here, and the album is now available on iTunes. Here’s Auburndale performing the an acoustic version of the title track from their new album at the WYSO studios this summer.
Music Video Monday: October 25, 2010
Halloween is so close you can almost taste the fun-sized Kit Kat bars. There are many great Halloween happenings this weekend, but one of my favorite Halloween traditions has to be the Monster Hop at Canal Street Tavern. This yearly party is hosted by the Luxury Pushers who’ll be joined onstage by Legbone and Timeless Entertainment Burlesque. Full show details are at the DaytonMostMetro events calendar.
We’ll tell you about some more Halloween concerts later this week here in the Dayton Music section. In the meantime, here’s a video of the Luxury Pushers performing at Canal Street Tavern.
Music Video Monday: October 11th edition
Now that I’ve recovered from Dayton Music Fest and the WYSO Fall Pledge drive, I’m happy to be getting back in the swing of blogging here at Dayton MostMetro. This week’s video comes to us courtesy of Chris Wright, frontman for C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks and all around great guy. The Igniters are one of those great bands from the Dayton music scene’s past. Enjoy this video and look forward to some news about the Dayton music scene’s future in the coming days.
Music Video Monday: September 27th edition
I don’t know about you, but I’m counting down the days until Saturday October 2nd. That’s when Dayton Music Fest highlights some of the best music in the region for the sixth year in a row. It was hard to choose a video to feature from the 20+ bands that are playing this year’s festival. So I made my decision based on the fact that I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to this band’s latest release. Bonneville’s newest album is called Drawing Maps and is available now. You can see them at the Trolley Stop on Saturday beginning at 9pm as part of the Dayton Music Fest lineup. For a complete list of Dayton Music Fest shows, check out the Dayton MostMetro Events Calendar.
Music Video Monday: September 20, 2010 edition
The optional subtitle of this week’s Music Video Monday is “Juliet Apologizing for Slacking by Posting Three Videos.” That’s right three videos! There is a common thread between these videos, actually a few if you know your Dayton music scene history. We’ll stick to the basics: each video features a band that’s on the bill this Friday night at Gilly’s.
Jesse Remnant and the Trainwrecks recently completed recording a new album that promises to be well worth hearing.
Floods is a newer band of veteran local musicians that’s been getting lots of attention since their first show earlier this summer.
A Shoreline Dream hails from Denver but has a local connection. Bass player Adam Edwards is a Dayton native who played in Shrug and Flyaway Minion to name a few.
Full show details are at the Dayton MostMetro Events Calendar.
Music Video Monday: Labor Day Edition
Happy Labor Day, Dayton music fans! Since we’re supposed to celebrating working, today’s video features a band that just finished working on an album. The Give Ups are celebrating the release of their new album, Gentlemen’s Club on Saturday at South Park Tavern. Show details are available at the Dayton MostMetro calendar.
Here are the Give Ups playing at Elbos back in 2006.
Music Video Monday: August 30th edition
This week gives me an excuse to share one of my favorite classic Dayton videos from a band that’s still rocking and rolling around town. You can catch Real Lulu this weekend as part of Ladyfest Dayton 2010. We’ll tell you more about Ladyfest later on this week. In the meantime, enjoy this video and check out the Ladyfest flier and other details on the Dayton MostMetro events calendar.
Music Video Monday: August 23rd edition
Whew! It’s been a busy Monday so far…so busy, in fact, that I’m just now getting around to delivering this week’s music video. Last week, I received some exciting news from the ladies of Jasper the Colossal. This Wednesday night, they’ll playing at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati opening for Stone Temple Pilots and Cage the Elephant. It’s a great achievement for a great hometown band, and our congratulations goes out to them.
So if you hadn’t already guessed, this week’s video featuring a live performance from Jasper the Colossal. This particular video comes from a Cure tribute show at the now defunct Dayton Dirt Collective. Enjoy!
