DSA’s 16th Annual Printmaking Exhibition, Litho-Lino-Mono-More

Opening February 5, the Dayton Society of Artists (DSA) is pleased to exhibit their 16th annual printmaking exhibition. The call for art was open to all adult printmakers who live, work, or attend school in Ohio. Julie Harris, graduate of Wright State University and assistant professor at Kean University, juried the entries for the exhibition.

Litho-Lino-Mono-More 2021 features thirty prints by eighteen artists who use a wide variety of printmaking methods such as screenprinting, etching, mezzotint, linoleum and woodblock printing, collograph, and serigraph. The artists included in the exhibition are Vanessa Bahr, Janet Ballweg, Stephanie Berrie, Brent Billingsley, Claire Bowman, Christine D’Epiro Abbott, Cassidy Ely, Nicole Fiely, Autumn Geer, Robin Landis, Gabrielle Lawrence, Arturo Rodriguez, Libby Slauenwhite, Ryan Stoneberger, and Kathryn Yarkosky. The artists represent a wide swath of Ohio’s cities including Toledo, Berea, Athens, Columbus, and Cincinnati. DSA is also pleased to report that three local DSA members, Shannon Grecula, Melanie Morrett, and Charles Wright, were selected to participate in the exhibition.

DSA’s annual printmaking exhibition was first started by David Smith, a well-known Dayton artist and an avid supporter of the DSA, sixteen years ago to honor his wife and printmaking artist, Kay Smith. An award will be given in memory of Kay’s legacy as well as a first and second place prize. In lieu of a reception, award announcements will be made over a facebook video and will be included on the home page of the DSA’s website.

Showing concurrently is Paul Rienzo in the DSA’s project space. Rienzo is a Chemical Engineer and a self-taught artist. His photo-realistic Millennial Parade series “convey[s] observations about evolving American society. The parade serves as a metaphor for trends of constructing of new realities and their blending, inflated importance, complexity, teaming up, the daily marching by of what matters, and anxiety.”

The exhibitions will run from February 5 through February 27. DSA’s gallery is open 12-5 Friday and Saturday, and 6-9 on First Fridays. The gallery is free and open to the public but is operating by appointment only during the pandemic. Appointments may be made on their website’s homepage, daytondsa.org or by calling 937-228-4532. The Icons of UD Basketball Call for Art

The University of Dayton and the Dayton Society of Artists are excited to announce The Icons of UD Basketball Call for Art.

The Icons of UD Basketball Call will commission six artists to create original artwork of six iconic figures known within the UD Basketball organization.

The panel will choose six finalists based on their submissions. Posters and high-end prints will be printed from selected original artwork. Posters and prints will be available for purchase during the 2018-19 Basketball Season. Proceeds from sales support the UD Champions and Scholars Fund, a fund that provides and enhances opportunities for more than 400 University of Dayton student-athletes on 17 athletic teams.

This project provides original artwork to the large and passionate UD basketball fan base while supporting artists and introducing their work to a new collectors’ market.  The artwork depicts the breadth of the community’s interests in subjects from the UD bandleader, to game announcers and basketball players.

This call is open to emerging and established artists who are 18 years or older and live in the USA.

Budget
Selected artists will receive $1000 each after final approval of the commissioned artwork.

Artist Amy Deal Depicts Dayton

Oakwood artist Amy Deal’s art continues to decorate our city.

In 2015 her design was selected as the winner from over 80 submissions to grace the flood wall at RiverScape.  Her 1000 foot mural that depicts biking, hiking and paddling also pays homage to the Wright brothers and the Dayton area’s history with bicycles.

You may have also seen her work on the walls of White-Allen Chevrolet on North Main Street.  This two year project has gone up in stages, with the south side wall being put up last November.

K12/TEJAS is transferring art this week for the North side of building.  It will be a mural of Dayton inventions. In this section you can see a stackable precast concrete stairwell unit, backpack parachute, all steel propeller, part of the self-starter, and part of the pop top. Just this week the brand new Kroger in Centerville has installed a piece of  Amy’s work “A Great Place To Live.”  This project in conjunction with Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) represents Amy’s vision of the region’s great assets, including stone buildings, paved bike paths, parks, fishing, and our rivers.

Amy Deal was born and raised in St. Henry, Oh, received her BFA from Kent State University, and resides in Dayton.  She is a fine artist and freelance visual communicator.  Amy’s work weaves typography and pigment to create poetic, layered landscapes.

A Great Place To Live illustrates the welcoming spirit of Centerville, alone with nearby Bellbrook and Sugarcreek Township.  Taking great pride in the excellent schools, parks and historic buildings and bridges, recreational offerings, and events, our residents are devoted to our community. Scenes of blue skies, neighborhood concerts, sugar maple tapping, fishing, canoeing , and its celebrated network of trails, are painted atop vintage cookbook pages from Centerville schools, churches and lady’s organizations.  The cookbook pages are also used for cut letterforms that spell out some of the area’s favorite activities and events.  See if you can find ART ON THE TRACE or SUGAR MAPLE FESTIVAL.
