2 Crowd-Pleasers, 1 More Week + Special Screening at THE NEON

June 20, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

This week’s newsletter will be short and sweet. If you still need to see HYSTERIA or THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, you have one more week! Both films will play until Thursday, June 28. On June 29, we will open MOONRISE KINGDOM (my favorite film of the year so far) and LOLA VERSUS (for one week only). Click on any of these titles to visit each film’s official site.

On Thursday, June 28 at 7:30, The Greater Dayton LGBT Center and The Miami Valley Pride Partnership will present a screening of the new documentary VITO. This wonderful new film is about the life of Vito Russo – author, film lover, leader and activist. In addition to being educational and enlightening, I found the movie to be utterly inspiring. I’m anxious to see it again. Tickets, just $8 each, are available at our box office. (Above is an image of Vito Russo and Bette Midler…her appearance in the film is quite special!) This just in: I’m delighted to announce that Professor Charles Derry will introduce VITO on Thursday evening. It was in his class at WSU where I was first introduced to Russo’s pinnacle book THE CELLULOID CLOSET.

“Allow yourself to be immersed in a world where perception is redefined by a mysterious drug called I Razor. Dr. Gregory Fleer, a once brilliant scientist and the creator of I Razor, is transformed by his own experiment, along with a portion of the male population, into a band of telekinetic freaks who must negotiate their way through a world twisted beyond all recognition by their altered perceptions… Circus Devils (Robert Pollard of GUIDED BY VOICES and Todd Tobias) present: I RAZOR a New Film directed by Todd Tobias, starring Steve Five, Cory Race, and Brad Visker – with music by Circus Devils. Saturday July 14th at 12:30pm. Tickets are $5 each, and they are going fast. Buying a ticket will enter you into a raffle to win cool I Razor/Circus Devils stuff (I Razor Movie T Shirts, posters) before the movie…” (taken from press release)

And don’t forget that your movie ticket gets you 15% off your food order at Sa-Bai…located directly behind THE NEON.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

New Comedy HYSTERIA Opens Friday!

June 12, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

We had to change our plans for this Friday. Though I know many of you are anxious to see THE INTOUCHABLES, The Weinstein Company changed their plans and decided not to open the film in Dayton this weekend. We will eventually play the film, but an alternate date has not been determined.
Instead, we will open a new comedy with a great cast. It’s an English period piece set in the late 19th century…about the invention of the vibrator. Though HYSTERIA sounds like it could be tawdry material, it’s actually one of the most delightful comedies I’ve seen in quite some time.
If you still need to see THE KID WITH A BIKE, you’ll need to hurry down. This incredible film will only play through Thursday. THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL will stick around for another week.
Visit www.neonmovies.com for remaining showtimes for this week.

Synopsis for HYSTERIA: “Hysteria, a mischievously inspired romantic comedy set in the late 19th century, is based on the surprising truth of how Mortimer Granville came up with the world’s first electromechanical vibrator in the name of medical science. The film stars Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy, alongside Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett and Felicity Jones.” (Sony Classics) This charming comedy is more sweet than naughty, and our NEON regulars should love this summer treat. As an added note, VITO is the opening night film of The Frameline Film Festival this month in San Francisco. It is also the opening night film of Outfest in L.A. next month. THE NEON, in little ole’ Dayton, Ohio, will have this film right between San Francisco and Los Angeles…that’s pretty wonderful!

Oscar-Nominated FOOTNOTE Opens Friday

May 9, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

On Friday, we finally get to open the Oscar-nominated film FOOTNOTE. If you’ve been to THE NEON in the past couple months, I’m almost certain you’ve seen the trailer for this film that has received critical accolades from around the world.

If you still need to see JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI, it only plays through Thursday. JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME and DAMSELS IN DISTRESS will play for another week. For remaining showtimes for this week, please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

Because of limited print availability, our upcoming schedule has moved around quite a bit. In addition, we’ve added some new, great titles (see the entire line-up below). On Friday, May 18, we will open the new documentary MARLEY – the definitive life story of the brilliant musician and political/social prophet Bob Marley. In celebration of this film, we will have live music on our patio – provided by Reggae musician M. Hunter of Columbus – starting at 6pm on May 18. We hope you’ll plan to join us. (More details will be provided in next week’s newsletter.)

Synopsis for FOOTNOTE: “Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik are both eccentric professors who have dedicated their lives to their work. The father, Eliezer, is a stubborn purist who fears the establishment and has never been recognized for his work. Meanwhile his son, Uriel, is an up-and-coming star in the field, who appears to feed on accolades – endlessly seeking recognition. Then one day, the tables turn. When Eliezer learns that he is to be awarded the Israel Prize, the most valuable honor for scholarship in the country, his vanity and desperate need for validation are exposed. His son, Uriel, is thrilled to see his father’s achievements finally recognized but, in a darkly funny twist, is forced to choose between the advancement of his own career and his father’s. Will he sabotage his father’s glory?” (taken from Sony Pictures Classics) Nominated for “Best Foreign Film” at this year’s Oscars, this film is currently at 91% positive reviews on Rottentomatoes.com.  Visit the OFFICIAL SITE.

On Wednesday, May 23 at 6:30pm (registration begins at 6pm), United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 75 has rented out our space for a special screening of INSIDE JOB – “the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008″…and they’re inviting you to join them. “UFCW 75 represents nearly 30,000 members along the I-75 corridor in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky; our members work mostly in supermarkets, drug stores, food packing and food processing plants, and in health care facilities. We are Ohio’s largest private sector union. For questions, more information, or to RSVP, email [email protected].” (details provided by UFCW 75)

For those of you who use Facebook, we finally have an actual page…not just a “group” page. We will soon be fazing out the old group, so please LIKE us by visiting our page – which now has a very easy address: www.facebook.com/neonmovies

Toronto – THE FILMS – Day #7, Part 1

September 14, 2011 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

I’ve seen three films already today…I have a bit of free time and I decided to write and update now (as I might be out late this evening).

First off, I saw HYSTERIA – a comedy set in 1880 starring Hugh Dancy & Maggie Gyllenhaal.  The movie is about a young doctor who is fired from his job and has to find a new place to work.  After being turned down numerous places, he is hired at a doctor’s office for women – most of whom seem to suffer from hysteria.  Though the trailer seems nothing but breezy, this little film is a gem and is actually quite touching (on par with the likes of MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY).  The performances, set design, costumes and score are wonderful.  NEON regulars will love this film!

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf4IlHaPRUg’]

Next I saw UNION SQUARE – starring Mira Sorvino and Emmy winner Tammy Blanchard (as well as a small part by Patti Lupone).  This rather stagey character study is relatively short, and overall, I don’t think it really worked on the big screen.  The performances are strong, but it feels like a play.  The story regards a woman who shows up on her sister’s doorstep after more than 3 years of not communicating.  One sister is in a pristine house with a husband and an organic food business…the other is from the Bronx and wonders what happened to her sister and her roots.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34hSJwsz4-s’]

I just got out of a screening of ALPS – the new film from Yorgos Lanthimos – director of DOGTOOTH.  ALPS is the name of an underground group of roleplayers who substitute for people’s departed loved ones.  The relationships between characters in the group are often volatile, and the performances are often stagey and almost unbelievable…but the actors in the film are incredible.  I’m a big fan of DOGTOOTH, so I was excited to see this film.  It has some interesting things to say about the human condition and our need for roles.  Below is a photo I took of the director and his two leads actresses (I sadly didn’t see that Aggeliki Papoulia’s eyes were closed until I uploaded the photo to my computer) and a clip of some footage from the film.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj2lR6Yp-gY’]

If I don’t check in again tonight, I’ll certainly be back tomorrow.

Cheers!
