Wes Anderson, More Hitchcock, FLANNERY & More

July 22, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello NEON Fans!
We’ve got a whole new slate this week!  Audiences have been loving the classic Hitchcock films, so we’re bringing two more – Tippi Hedren in THE BIRDS and Hitchcock’s personal favorite, SHADOW OF A DOUBT.  In addition, many of you chimed in and said you wanted to see Wes Anderson films back on the big screen – so we’re bringing two big hits back – MOONRISE KINGDOM and GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (we’ll consider these the precursor to FRENCH DISPATCH – Anderson’s next film due later this year). In our Virtual Cinema, we just added a documentary about the famous author, FLANNERY, and on Friday, you’ll be able to virtually access NEVER TOO LATE.  If you need to see any of our current selections – MARNIE, REAR WINDOW, NEVER TOO LATE or BLADE RUNNER, Thursday will be your last chance to catch them at THE NEON.
In the past few days, I’ve been a part of two great virtual discussions. On Sunday, we assembled four special guests to talk about CREATING A CHARACTER.  If you’d like to check out that free discussion, click the image below.  If you haven’t yet seen CREATING A CHARACTER, here’s the LINK where you can gain 72 hour access for $12.  One of our special guests was WSU grad Jasmine Batchelor – she appeared in the documentary and is the star of another film in our Virtual Cinema THE SURROGATE.  If you haven’t seen her critically-acclaimed, incredible performance in this film, you can gain 72 hour access to THE SURROGATE by clicking this LINK.  On Monday evening, The Jewish Community Center of Greater Dayton invited me to take part in a discussion about THE TOBACCONIST.  You can watch that community discussion HERE, and you can gain 72 hour access to THE TOBACCONIST HERE.
On July 31, we will open 3 NEW films in person at THE NEON – THE FIGHT, SUMMERLAND, and GORDON LIGHTFOOT: IF YOU COULD READY MY MIND.  Please help us spread the word.  Social distancing measure will certainly still be in place…but results will help us determine how we need to proceed regarding our hours of operation.

Synopsis for THE BIRDS – In Person Screenings:  “Loosely based on the 1952 story by Daphne du Maurier, THE BIRDS focuses on a series of sudden and unexplained violent bird attacks on the people of Bodega Bay, California, over the course of a few days. The film stars Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren in her screen debut, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Veronica Cartwright. The screenplay is by Evan Hunter, who was told by Hitchcock to develop new characters and a more elaborate plot while keeping du Maurier’s title and concept of unexplained bird attacks. In 2016, The Birds was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress, and selected for preservation in its National Film Registry.” (wikipedia) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for SHADOW OF A DOUBT – In Person Screenings:  We’re wrapping up our 6-film HITCHCOCK 101 Series with the film that was Hitch’s personal favorite! “Charles Oakley lives alone in a rooming house. One day, his landlady tells him that two men came looking for him; he sees the two men waiting on the street in front of his room and he decides to leave town. Charlotte (Charlie) Newton is a bored teen-age girl living in the idyllic town of Santa Rosa, California. She receives wonderful news: Her mother’s younger brother (her eponym), Charles Oakley, is arriving for a visit. Her uncle arrives and at first everyone is delighted with his visit, especially young Charlie. Uncle Charlie brings everyone presents. He gives his niece an emerald ring which has someone else’s initials engraved inside…” (wikipedia) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for MOONRISE KINGDOM – In Person Screenings:  NEON audiences have expressed their love of Wes Anderson numerous times to us…so we’re bringing back a couple favorites! “Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore – and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in every which way. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff, Captain Sharp. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader, Scout Master Ward. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bishop. The cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Bob Balaban; and introduces Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as Sam and Suzy, the boy and girl.” (Focus Features) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL – In Person Screenings:  One of our highest grossing and most beloved films of all time at THE NEON is coming back as we look at the work of Wes Anderson. See it back on the big screen the way it’s meant to be seen! “THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune — all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent.” (Searchlight) The all-star cast of this visually stunning film is too lengthy to list (but I can’t help myself in mentioning Saoirse Ronan and Tilda Swinton)! Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for FLANNERY – Virtual Engagement: “Winner of the first-ever Library of Congress / Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film, FLANNERY is the lyrical, intimate exploration of the life and work of author Flannery O’Connor, whose distinctive Southern Gothic style influenced a generation of artists and activists. With her family home at Andalusia (the Georgia farm where she grew up and later wrote her best known work) as a backdrop, a picture of the woman behind her sharply aware, starkly redemptive style comes into focus. Including conversations with those who knew her and those inspired by her (Mary Karr, Tommy Lee Jones, Lucinda Williams, Hilton Als and more), Flannery employs never-before-seen archival footage, newly discovered personal letters and her own published words (read by Mary Steenburgen) alongside original animations and music to examine the life and legacy of an American literary icon. Content Advisory: This film contains offensive language, including an ethnic slur that-in an effort to retain the integrity of the literary works examined therein-has not been muted or otherwise distorted in the presentation of the documentary. Racist language was wrong during Flannery O’Connor’s lifetime and is wrong today. This film, the filmmakers and those presenting the film do not condone, support or promote the use of racist language in any way.” Click the image below to gain 72 hour access to the film for $12.
On Friday, we will begin offering NEVER TOO LATE in our Virtual Cinema. This senior-driven romantic dramedy stars James Cromwell and Jacki Weaver.  Starting Friday, you can click the image below to gain 72 hour access for $12.

Continuing in our Virtual Cinema:
JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE in our Virtual Cinema. Synopsis: “Rated “100% Fresh” on Rottentomatoes! “Using interviews and rare archival footage, JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE chronicles Lewis’ 60-plus years of social activism and legislative action on civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration.”  Click the image below to gain 72 hour access to the film for $12.

Wanna know what’s coming down the road in our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.)  On July 31, we will open the doc about the resilient work of the ACLU – THE FIGHT (this one is also opening in person). Additionally on July 31, we will open Ron Howard’s latest doc REBUILDING PARADISE (Ron Howard’s doc about Pavorotti was a big hit for us – you can watch the trailer as well as pre-order the film via the link).  On August 7, we will open 2 new films –  GORDON LIGHTFOOT: IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND (which opens in person on July 31) as well as OUT STEALING HORSES.  More to come!

Upcoming at The Neon: “The Invisible War”, “Eleven” and Special Announcements

August 1, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

We’re holding steady this week. If you still need to see TO ROME WITH LOVE or MOONRISE KINGDOM, this will more than likely be your last week to see these films at THE NEON. In addition, we will hold BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. Though this film didn’t perform as well as we had hoped, audiences have really embraced it…and we hope positive word-of-mouth will help build attendance.

Check out the website for BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD.

Air Force Veteran Jachlin Williams will be hosting two screenings of the new, award-winning documentary THE INVISIBLE WAR at THE NEON. The first is this Sunday, August 5 and the second is on Thursday, August 16. “A groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of our country’s most shameful and best-kept secrets, THE INVISIBLE WAR reveals the epidemic of rape within the U.S. Military. Today, a female soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. Tracing the powerfully emotional stories of several young veterans, the film reveals the systemic cover-up of the crimes they have suffered and follows their struggles to rebuild their lives and careers. These screenings are part of a campaign to tell survivors of sexual military trauma that they are not invisible.” These screenings are free. Tickets will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis – one ticket per person on the day of each screening.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECOqpv45tIo’]

The Greater Dayton Association of Black Journalists will host a community discussion about the Anthony Sowell serial murder case Saturday, August 18 at 11am at THE NEON. A discussion of the societal conditions that allowed the murders to go unnoticed will be discussed following a preview of the documentary ELEVEN. The film is about the Imperial Avenue killings in Cleveland’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood in 2009. Stanley Donaldson, a reporter for The Cleveland Plain Dealer, will be on hand along with co-director Khalil Pedizsai. Donaldson wrote newspaper articles about the murders. He is also a producer for the documentary. Please help us spread the word about this free community discussion.

Very soon, I’ll be able to give you details about our benefit on October 14. Slowly but surely, we’re getting details in place so we can make a big announcement (here are a few wonderful details – Meadowlark, Coco’s Bistro & Roost have already confirmed to provide appetizers). This benefit will help us as we transition from 35mm to digital projection – a costly but necessary endeavor.

Did you see that FilmDayton revealed their line-up for their 4th Annual Festival? Check out their site to see the latest. This fest is set for August 24-26, and I can’t wait to see COMPLIANCE. Postcards with the complete line-up are also available at our box office.

And speaking of festivals, The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival is ready to announce this year’s line-up. HERE is is! It’s our biggest and best yet, and we’re now in the process of securing guest artists to attend the festival. The 7th Annual Fest is set for Sept. 28-30. Visit the site, watch the trailers and mark your calendars…it’s gonna be great! (Please contact me if you or your business might be interested in sponsoring this annual event.)

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

July 25, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

It’s time for a new film, and it happens to be one of the most critically-acclaimed films of the year. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD has garnered 100% reviews from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Time, Variety, and many, many more…and it will be playing exclusively at THE NEON!

Synopsis for BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD: “In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.” (taken from Fox Searchlight) Visit the official site.

Hello Everyone,

This is another short & easy newsletter. We had great attendance again over the weekend. TO ROME WITH LOVE and MOONRISE KINGDOM continue to draw crowds. Thank you so much for your support of these films. (You can visit either official site by clicking the titles above.)

We are holding steady for another week!

We go on a week-to-week basis with all of our films.  These current hits (along with our recent engagement of BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL) have performed better than any other films for quite some time…so we’re holding them over.  As soon as possible, we’ll get to BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and THE INTOUCHABLES.  (Sometimes dates move at our request…and sometimes distributors move dates around.)

Check out the MAKING OF Featurette for MOONRISE KINGDOM:

Next week, I will have firm details regarding the August 5 screening of THE INVISIBLE WAR.

2 Great Films, Another Great Weekend at THE NEON!

July 12, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

This is a short & easy newsletter this week. We had another incredible weekend at THE NEON. People are really liking Woody Allen’s latest film – TO ROME WITH LOVE (some people have been quite vocal about their disgust for the review that appeared in Dayton Daily…and some have said they like the film as much as MIDNIGHT IN PARIS). In addition, MOONRISE KINGDOM continues to draw big crowds. Thank you so much for your support of these films. (You can visit either official site by clicking the titles above.)

Check out this fun “Behind the Scenes Clip.”

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M_ySP5M1F0′]

We are holding steady this week! That said, we do have a special event on Saturday.

“Allow yourself to be immersed in a world where perception is redefined by a mysterious drug called I Razor. Dr. Gregory Fleer, a once brilliant scientist and the creator of I Razor, is transformed by his own experiment, along with a portion of the male population, into a band of telekinetic freaks who must negotiate their way through a world twisted beyond all recognition by their altered perceptions… Circus Devils (Robert Pollard of GUIDED BY VOICES and Todd Tobias) present: I RAZOR a New Film directed by Todd Tobias, starring Steve Five, Cory Race, and Brad Visker – with music by Circus Devils. Saturday July 14th at 12:30pm. Tickets are $5 each, and there are only a few left! Buying a ticket will enter you into a raffle to win cool I Razor/Circus Devils stuff (I Razor Movie T Shirts, posters) before the movie…” (taken from press release) Word has it that Guided By Voices will be in attendance.

In the coming weeks, I’ll have news about a special event surrounding the film THE INVISIBLE WAR (August 5) and news about a NEON Benefit (Save the date – October 14) to assist with our upcoming digital conversion.

And don’t forget that your movie ticket gets you 15% off your food order at Sa-Bai…located directly behind THE NEON.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Best Week Ever + TO ROME WITH LOVE at THE NEON!

July 5, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal 2 Comments

Hello Everyone,

Wow! What a fantastic week!! Thank you to everyone who has come out and supported us over the hot, stormy week and weekend. It has been our absolute best ever!! (2nd place now goes to our opening of MILK while SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE was playing in our other auditorium.)

I’m sad to say it, but THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL and HYSTERIA are on their way out. On Friday, we will open the latest from Woody Allen – TO ROME WITH LOVE. Allen’s last film – MIDNIGHT IN PARIS – was our longest running film last year (13 weeks)…we’re anxious to see how this new film performs.
And it goes without saying that we will hold the delightful and crowd-pleasing MOONRISE KINGDOM.

Synopsis for TO ROME WITH LOVE: “To Rome with Love is a kaleidoscopic comedy movie set in one of the world’s most enchanting cities. The film brings us into contact with a well-known American architect reliving his youth; an average middle-class Roman who suddenly finds himself Rome’s biggest celebrity; a young provincial couple drawn into separate romantic encounters; and an American opera director endeavoring to put a singing mortician on stage.” Starring Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis and more! Visit the OFFICIAL SITE.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhBs9-G6sms’]

Additional thanks go out to everyone who came and supported our one-night-only screening of VITO last week. The introduction by Professor Charles Derry was extra special…and the film was incredible. It was nice to see such a well-attended screening of a documentary!

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,

Magical MOONRISE KINGDOM Starts Friday at THE NEON!

June 27, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Our plans have changed for this weekend. In an unusual turn of events, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL experienced a major upswing in attendance this past weekend…so we’re going to hold it (along with one daily screening of HYSTERIA) for one more week. That said, on our other screen, we will still open my favorite film of the year – the charming, magical, and beautiful MOONRISE KINGDOM.
(Woody Allen’s latest – TO ROME WITH LOVE – is slated to open July 6.)

Synopsis for MOONRISE KINGDOM: “Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, the film follows a young boy and girl falling in love. When they are moved to run away together, various factions of the town mobilize to search for them and the town is turned upside down – which might not be such a bad thing.” (taken from Focus Features) This new film from Wes Anderson has an incredible cast including Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton and more.  Visit the official site – it’s a really fun!

Don’t forget about our special screening of VITO on Thursday evening. The local press has been great, and the movie screens Thursday, June 28 at 7:30. Tickets are still available for $8 each. Professor Charles Derry will introduce VITO on Thursday evening. It was in his class at WSU where I was first introduced to Russo’s pinnacle book THE CELLULOID CLOSET. Don’t miss this chance to see a great film introduced by my favorite professor.

Tickets are $5 each, and there aren’t many left! Buying a ticket will enter you into a raffle to win cool I Razor/Circus Devils stuff (I Razor Movie T Shirts, posters) before the movie…” (taken from press release)

And don’t forget that your movie ticket gets you 15% off your food order at Sa-Bai…located directly behind THE NEON.

I’m anxious to see it again. Tickets, just $8 each, are available at our box office. (Above is an image of Vito Russo and Bette Midler…her appearance in the film is quite special!) This just in: I’m delighted to announce that Professor Charles Derry will introduce VITO on Thursday evening. Cinematic Gem – THE KID WITH A BIKE – Starts Friday

June 5, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL continues to be a hit at THE NEON. Unfortunately, SOUND OF MY VOICE underperformed this weekend. If you still need to see this new thriller, hurry down. Thursday will be its last day. Because VOICE is leaving so quickly, we now have room on our schedule to bring a cinematic gem to town…but only for one week! THE KID WITH A BIKE, the new film from the Dardenne Brothers, is one of the last films from my list of favorites at last year’s Toronto International Film Fest. (It was right at the top with THE DESCENDANTS and THE ARTIST.) Numerous critics have given the film a 100% rating – The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly & more! Unless you were at THE NEON this past weekend, you may not have seen the trailer. If that’s the case, please take a moment to check it out below.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfz-IGE66vg’]

Synopsis for THE KID WITH A BIKE: “Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, the deeply moving new film by the Dardenne brothers delves into the emotional life of troubled 11-year-old Cyril. When his father abandons him, Cyril obsessively searches for his bicycle – placing his last bit of hope in this symbol of their relationship. Almost by accident, he becomes the ward of a kind hairdresser, who seems surprised to find herself so determined to help him. With his wild, unpredictable behavior and his disastrous search for father figures, Cyril risks losing her – though she refuses to give up without a fight.” (IFC Films) THE KID WITH A BIKE is only slated to play for one week!!

Don’t forget about WSU’s BIG LENS FILM FESTIVAL this Thursday (a second show at 9:30 has just been added). Details about it and other films for this week are on our website at www.neonmovies.com

On June 28 at 7:30, The Greater Dayton LGBT Center and The Miami Valley Pride Partnership will present a screening of the new documentary VITO. SOUND OF MY VOICE Opens Friday + Great NEON News

May 30, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Opening weekend of THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL was terrific…thanks to everyone who came out to see it. Memorial Day weekend is traditionally quite good for us…but this was our best ever! Audiences are loving the film, and there have been several rounds of applause after screenings over the past few days. In addition, I appreciate the fact that many of you voted for THE NEON as “Best Movie Theater.” Though we didn’t end up in first place, I’m not distraught. We only do about 5% of the business of the multiplexes, and I’m terribly grateful that so many of you jumped at the chance to vote for us.

If you still need to see MARLEY or DARLING COMPANION, tomorrow will be your last chance to see either film at THE NEON. On Friday, we will open a new thriller – SOUND OF MY VOICE.

Synopsis for SOUND OF MY VOICE: ” Peter and Lorna, a couple and documentary filmmaking team, infiltrate a mysterious group led by an enigmatic young woman named Maggie. Intent on exposing her as a charlatan and freeing the followers from her grip, Peter and Lorna start to question their objective and each other as they unravel the secrets of Maggie’s underworld.” (Fox Searchlight)

Like its predecessors, Big Lens 2012 will no doubt entertain, educate, enlighten, and excite. Check out the roster: IN WITH THE NEW – Alex Taylor & Eric Risher; PROFILE – Jon Swansiger, Colin Brooks, & Chris Flannery; NO NAME #3 – Joe Asta, Cole Pisano, Colin Brooks, & Alex Taylor; WOMEN WHO YELL – Megan Hague & Kyle Wilkinson; ANY OTHER DAY – Rick Moosbrugger & Andrew Grigiss.

MARIGOLD HOTEL, Vote NEON & More

May 23, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

We’ve got 2 new movies opening this Friday (+ 1 holdover)…but we also need your help. First, let’s talk movies.

In last week’s newsletter, I mentioned that we have received more phone calls, e-mails and customer questions about THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL than any film in recent memory. Well it’s finally coming to town, and we hope you’re making plans to see it soon. This little British import (though shot mostly in India) has been a huge hit in larger markets, and we’re hoping it’s a hit for us, too.

In addition to MARIGOLD HOTEL, we’re opening a little film that we don’t anticipate sticking around too long. DARLING COMPANION – starring Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline – was directed by Lawrence Kasdan (THE BIG CHILL, GRAND CANYON). Hurry down if you want to catch this one.

Though MARLEY only performed moderately well, we’re going to hold onto it for one screening a day for one more week. When the film opened on Friday, the enthusiasm and energy was tremendous. Special thanks to M Hunter for his wonderful music on the patio, Elizabeth Gorman for her help in building the needed community ties, and to all of you who came out on that beautiful night. It was fantastic!

If you still need to see FOOTNOTE or DAMSELS IN DISTRESS, Thursday will be your last chance to see them at THE NEON. For remaining showtimes, please visit our official site. And as an added note, because of the holiday, Monday’s schedule will have extra screenings of our upcoming features (schedule is below).

Synopsis for THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL: “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past.” (Fox Searchlight)
[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDY89LYxK0w’]

Synopsis for DARLING COMPANION: “On a wintry day, Beth saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the freeway. Struggling with her distracted, self-involved husband Joseph and an empty nest at home, Beth forms a special bond with the rescued animal. When Joseph loses the dog after a wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies, the distraught Beth enlists the help of the few remaining guests and a mysterious young woman in a frantic search. Each member of the search party is affected by the adventure, which takes them in unexpected directions – comic, harrowing, and sometimes deeply emotional.” (Sony Classics)
[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_OSjd8nKlQ’]

And now for the part where we need your HELP!
Active Dayton (a part of Dayton Daily News) is once again holding their contest for “Best Movie Theater”…and THE NEON is way behind. (This contest completely slipped past me last year, and it’s the only year we didn’t win.) If you have a few seconds, please visit this LINK and vote for your favorite cinema in Dayton.

WSU’s BIG LENS – a showcase of the latest films from WSU’s Motion Picture Department – is now on the calendar…and it’s only a couple weeks away. I’ll have more details in next week’s newsletter, but make sure to save the date for Thursday, June 7 at 7:30pm. Tickets will be on sale starting this weekend, and they’re only $7 each.

For those of you who use Facebook, we finally have an actual page…not just a “group” page. We will soon be fazing out the old group, so please LIKE us by visiting our page – which now has a very easy address: www.facebook.com/neonmovies
And don’t forget that your movie ticket gets you 15% off your food order at Sa-Bai…located directly behind THE NEON.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Oscar-Nominated FOOTNOTE Opens Friday

May 9, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

On Friday, we finally get to open the Oscar-nominated film FOOTNOTE. If you’ve been to THE NEON in the past couple months, I’m almost certain you’ve seen the trailer for this film that has received critical accolades from around the world.

If you still need to see JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI, it only plays through Thursday. JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME and DAMSELS IN DISTRESS will play for another week. For remaining showtimes for this week, please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

Because of limited print availability, our upcoming schedule has moved around quite a bit. In addition, we’ve added some new, great titles (see the entire line-up below). On Friday, May 18, we will open the new documentary MARLEY – the definitive life story of the brilliant musician and political/social prophet Bob Marley. In celebration of this film, we will have live music on our patio – provided by Reggae musician M. Hunter of Columbus – starting at 6pm on May 18. We hope you’ll plan to join us. (More details will be provided in next week’s newsletter.)

Synopsis for FOOTNOTE: “Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik are both eccentric professors who have dedicated their lives to their work. The father, Eliezer, is a stubborn purist who fears the establishment and has never been recognized for his work. Meanwhile his son, Uriel, is an up-and-coming star in the field, who appears to feed on accolades – endlessly seeking recognition. Then one day, the tables turn. When Eliezer learns that he is to be awarded the Israel Prize, the most valuable honor for scholarship in the country, his vanity and desperate need for validation are exposed. His son, Uriel, is thrilled to see his father’s achievements finally recognized but, in a darkly funny twist, is forced to choose between the advancement of his own career and his father’s. Will he sabotage his father’s glory?” (taken from Sony Pictures Classics) Nominated for “Best Foreign Film” at this year’s Oscars, this film is currently at 91% positive reviews on Rottentomatoes.com.  Visit the OFFICIAL SITE.
