Dayton Music Fest

Daytonpoolza!: Dayton Music Fest 10 Years Strong

October 3, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

(Manray Photo courtesy: Dayton Music Fest)

Dayton Music Fest organizers Don Thrasher and Kyle Melton take a seat with me in the patio area at South Park Tavern.  While we  are sitting at our table, an influx of people come and go throughout the duration of the early evening.  It’s mostly due to the  establishment’s half off priced pizza promotion that they are running that evening.  For some others, they have chosen to stick  around and settle in the covered patio.  Those same individuals are also taking full advantage of the fall weather and the terrific  selection of craft beers that are waiting on tap.

Since the end of May, the duo listened to 60-100 demos of submitted music from bands that wanted a chance to be selected.  Now  the final preparations are underway.  The duo are in the middle of a press junket, including a couple of radio spots and our  meeting.  Melton and Thrasher have also been preparing for their set in the music event with their band, Smug Brothers and  currently run the indie label Gas Daddy Go.  While sipping on a beer, Thrasher and Melton talk about some of the acts that will be  taking the stage.

“Have you had the chance of checking out Manray yet?  Definitely check them out,” Thrasher mentions.  “Also don’t miss out on catching Dead Rider.  They love playing here in Dayton, so we are thrilled to have them coming and playing in town.”

Dayton’s music scene has seen some bands get included in the national spotlight.  You have Kelley and Kim Deal’s alternative rock band The Breeders see their hometown success sky rocket in the 90s to become indie legends.  You have the recently split lo-fi rockers Guided By Voices, led by the one and only Robert Pollard, blaze through with their endless releases of new material.  You also can’t forget the past local bands Enon, Swearing At Motorists, and Brainiac who left their imprint on the music scene in Dayton.  With the widespread talent circling around the area, it would be difficult to not have an event like Dayton Music Fest.  It’s a celebration of the melting pot that is the music that surrounds the city.

In 2004, Dan Clayton, Andy Ingram, and Shawn Johnson felt that the national scene wasn’t giving the Dayton area the appreciation that it once did.  Johnson and Clayton threw out the idea that Dayton needed a showcase the burgeoning music scene.  The duo quickly went to work on setting up the bands and locations for the shows to be at.  They then recruited Ingram to create the posters and flyers.  No one knew exactly how it was going to turn out, but they felt that it was needed to be done.

Now it’s 10th year, the Dayton Music Fest has become one of the highly anticipated and heavily attended events in the area each fall.  Individuals from all corners of life will be able to seize an opportunity to come out and partake in the celebrated music scene.  Festival goers will fully consume all of the special, unforgettable performances, along with some surprises.

As soon as the final band finishes up their set Saturday night (Motel Beds at Blind Bob’s), both Melton and Thrasher will be no longer curate the event.

“We were at practice Sunday night, and afterwards we looked at each other and said, “You done after this one?”.  We shook our head in agreement,” Thrasher explains when the decision was made to call it a day.

Besides increasing the visibility by scheduling some of the selected bands and artists to perform at The Midwest Outdoor Experience, which is one of the largest festivals in the Midwest.  This past April, Melton and Thrasher had a kickoff event for the Dayton Music Fest with a special concert-the Buffalo Killers performed with a backing choir at the Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Dayton, 20 W. First Street.  You can get the DMF mobile app, where you can rank and follow the bands with Q&A posts.

The duo has handpicked local band’s Speaking Suns bassist Conor Stratton to take over the reins.  “We think that he is going to be great,” Thrasher says.  “He manages the band, and runs his record label (Great Guys Records).  He’s already been calling some people and is getting a team together.”  As for Melton and Thrasher?  They will continue to play in Smug Brothers and prep some upcoming releases with Gas Daddy Go.

While it will be tough for Melton and Thrasher to no longer coordinating the yearly festival, they have no regrets on ending their run.

“We wanted to give someone else a chance to do it, and make it even better,” Melton says.  “We did some great things to make the festival better.  Five years is a great run.”

A run that deserves a toast while sitting in the patio at South Park Tavern.

The Dayton Music Fest is on Friday, October 3rd starting at 7pm at The “Old” Yellow Cab, Saturday October 4th from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. at Eastwood MetroPark, or Saturday night beginning at 9 p.m. in the Oregon District.  For more information on the Dayton Music Fest, please visit daytonmusicfest.com.

Buffalo Killers Kick Off DMF’s 10th Year Anniversary With Special Show

April 21, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

For the past nine years, the Dayton Music Fest has spotlighted the burgeoning music scene in Dayton, Ohio.  Founded by Dan Clayton, Andy Ingram, and Shawn Johnson, the Dayton Music Fest features artists and bands from all around the area over two days in several area establishments.  Within walking distance from each other, festival attendees are able to experience live, local music in ways that they never thought possible.  The event also allows people who don’t come down and watch live shows often the opportunity to witness the rich musical talent that is coming out of Dayton.

Now curated by Kyle Melton and Don Thrasher, the tenth anniversary of the Dayton Music Fest will undoubtedly be one of the best yet.  For starters, the DMF organizers, along with David C. Obenour and Ghettoblaster Magazine, will be having their kickoff event this Friday night at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Dayton (20 West First Street).  The kickoff event will feature Dayton’s/Cincinnati’s own Buffalo Killers.

Lead by songwriting brothers Zachary and Andrew Gabbard, along with Joseph Sebaali and Sven Kahns, Buffalo Killers have drawn the attention of the likes of The Black Crowes’ own Chris Robinson and Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys.  Robinson enjoyed the band so much that he even invited the Buffalo Killers to open a string of dates.  The band’s previous albums, Buffalo Killers (2006), Let It Ride (2008), 3 (2011), Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. (2012), Ohio Grass (2013) present signature hook heavy homegrown rock n roll play with an undeniable Southern psychedelic tone.

Buffalo Killers have recently released their fifth studio album, Heavy Reverie this month via Sun Pedal Recordings.  Heavy Reverie was recorded in Cleveland, OH at Crushtone Studios with producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Fiona Apple).  The show on Friday will feature a backing choir accompanying the band for select songs,  truly a once in a lifetime experience that fits perfectly into Dayton Music Fest’s vision each and every year.

Tickets are limited to 250.  Advanced sales are available through Monday at: http://daytonmusicfest.bandcamp.com/, and additional tickets will be available at the door.

Also on the night of the show, Toxic Brew Company will be releasing the limited edition Buffalo Killer Brown Ale.  The tapping will be at 5pm.

2013 Dayton Music Fest: 5 Bands To Checkout During The Weekend’s Event

October 4, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

In 2004, the Dayton music scene was comprised of tremendous acts playing all around the town each and other night.  Problem was there were folks who lived in town that still didn’t know just how good the music was here.  Dan Clayton, Andy Ingram, and Shawn Johnson went to work and they wanted to showcase the extravagant talent in a unique way.  Thus the Dayton Music Fest was started.  Going in its 9th year now, Dayton Music Fest is now in the hands of Dayton’s own Don Thrasher and Kyle Melton.  The two have assembled 32 acts ready to perform in various locations throughout Dayton for Friday and Saturday night.  Each set will undoubtedly give the crowds that fill the venues a diverse collection of talent that shines brighter than most cities.  Here are 5 bands you need to check out.  For some, these acts are staples.  For others that haven’t seen these acts-you are in for a treat.

Noah + The Rescue Radio

Outstanding blues guitarist Noah Wotherspoon has built quite the resume, developing a following all around the world with his performances.  He also has opened for Leon Russell, Latimore, and Boz Scaggs.  Wotherspoon has multiple appearances at the Chicago Blues Festival, The Blues Masters at the Crossroads Festival in Salina, Kansas.  He has now expanded his mastery of blues and has added Tom Rastikas on bass and Josh Johnson on drums to make up Noah + The Rescue Radio.  The band’s lo-fi sound will feature influence from ’60s British pop/rock along with Wotherspoon’s signature guitar play.  Noah + The Rescue Radio will be performing at Canal Street Tavern, which will suit the band’s style just perfectly.  Showtime is tonight at 11.

Tim Pritchard & The Boxcar Suite

Tim Pritchard and the Boxcar Suite’s shows are a music lovers dream.  Their jangly sound present a little bit for everyone.  Fans of  country and fans of rock will come together in unison with the incredible guitar play from Pritchard himself, along with Tony Moore  and bassist Phil Caviness.  The lyrics of the songs according to the band are ‘bittersweet and beyond’.  You can see and hear for  yourselves at Canal Street Tavern Saturday night at 10:30pm.

Red Hot Rebellion

For those who to catch a set from a group that are low-key, chilled out-you aren’t going to find it with Red Hot Rebellion.  You are not  going to get anywhere near that.  You will be witness to a band that play at a frenzied pace, with no know having their shirts dry.  This  punk/metal hybrid, Ramones influenced band will be thrashing the stage, giving the audience all the more reason to rise up and let  their hair down.  For the faint of heart-you may want to stay away.  For those who want to rock-get yourself down to Blind Bob’s on  Saturday night.  Showtime is at 10:30.

Meghna & The Majority

We can’t forget the ladies that will be highlighted during the Dayton Music Fest.  Meghna & The Majority’s sets have included mind-  blowing renditions of Adele’s Skyfall and Florence and the Machine’s Dog Days Are Over.  Don’t be fooled, however.  The band will  also play originals that will be infused with jazz, country, and folk.  Meghna’s lyrics dive into her relationships from the present and  the past, good and bad.  Each lyric sung oozes bluesy tones.  Meghna & The Majority is perfect for all ages to sit back and enjoy.  Catch  them 1pm Saturday afternoon at the Midwest Outdoor Experience.

TEAM VOID

TEAM VOID has recently released their second album ‘Robot Killer’, which is full of their vintage, surf rock sound.  These Luchador-  mask wearing quarter are simply a pleasure to listen to.  Nothing but instrumental play, expect to be dazzled with an onslaught of  seamless guitar play and superb horn play.  TEAM VOID will be nothing like you have ever seen.  The masks will unquestionably  throw off newcomers to the band, but will quickly forget it once you start to hear the band play.  The band will be closing out the  night at Oregon Express on Saturday around midnight.  Perfect timing for their set.

Admission for all the shows is $10, and $5 for any one venue.  For more info, click onto www.daytonmusicfest.com.

An Introduction to the Scene with Dayton Music Fest

September 15, 2011 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Sad Cadillac performing at Dayton Music Fest (Photo by Don Thrasher)

Editor’s note: please welcome Justin Guinn, one of our Dayton Campus Connect interns.

The 7th annual Dayton Music Festival this past weekend allotted a surprisingly vast, wholesome and weird introduction into the Gem City’s live music scene.

Sad Cadillac kicked-off the noise Saturday night at the Oregon Express. Their sound was an excellent balance of crunchy rhythm and stellar lead guitar mixed with hard, smooth vocals. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club knotted with a faint ‘90s grunge vibe. The three piece(two guitars and drums) laid it down right and left me yearning for a full length set sometime soon.

Oxymoronatron performing at Dayton Music Fest (Photo by Don Thrasher)

After Sad Cadillac, I made my way up 5th Street to catch Oxymoronatron at the Tumbleweed Connection. Little did I know of the strangeness that awaited. Oxymoronatron was unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed before. They come on like a traumatic dose of amphetamine and leave you confused and exhausted. These four performers bring an intensity that could, under the roof of a more appropriate venue, be instantaneously fun and contagious. But in the Tumbleweed, the band seemed cramped and reserved. The weirdness of Oxymoronatron came out of nowhere and moved in leaps and bounds. After their set, my auditory pallet was significantly over-saturated.

To distract my mind from the craziness of Oxymoronatron, I traced my steps back to the Oregon Express to check out Moon High. I was afraid I’d be stuck in an Oxymoronatronic daze, but immediately the beach-folk-Americana of Moon High calmed my nerves. Their sound was firmly driven, but in a smooth, natural way. They had this indie folk, SoCal beachy quality like a raw, modern CSNY that made me want to take a road trip to the coast, any coast. Their set was a perfect blend of peaceful serenity and harmonious musical talent. They definitely earned a top spot on my list of bands to watch.

Natalie Felker and Michael Campbell of the Fervor (Photo by Don Thrasher)

I could have easily floated downstream on Moon High’s beautiful sound all night, but they followed suit with a half-hour set and, of course, I had a job to do. I was still looking for a deep, driving, in-your-face rock band. My wish was granted at back the Tumbleweed. After meeting up with an old friend and ordering a Moe-garita, we made our way to the balcony to observe The Fervor. What a sight they were. I knew I was in for a good time when their lead girl, Natalie Felker threw a verbal right hook at a heckling, over-served patron. She is reminiscent of a Grace Slick/Zooey Deschanel mix with stellar piano skills. Add to that the impressive sound and energy of their guitarist, her husband, Ben Felker, and the result is pretty damn soulful. It was no surprise when I read on their MySpace that they teamed up with My Morning Jacket frontman Yim Yames to release their latest album, Arise, Great Warrior.

Each of these bands were entirely unique from the others, except that they all had this very apparent organic, “we do this because we love it” quality. I was blown away by the sounds they put out, and honestly, I didn’t think I would be. They all laid it down hard, leaving me wishing they had been slotted for full sets. The music was on point, but what really stood out to me was the Oregon District itself.

That .2 mile stretch between Patterson and Wayne is timelessly hip. Not in the sense of wayfarers, flannel and tight jeans, but in a freak power/destined for the edge way. It’s hospitable, but the air carries this slightly unstable energy capable of break at any moment. Come as you are, stay as long as you like, return soon or never, it doesn’t matter. It’s something every town/city ought to have, but something not all towns/cities could handle. I’m ashamed that I’m in my fourth year at UD and have just now discovered this magical place. Saddening, but at least I realize it. I got my first real dose of the Oregon District last Saturday and now I yearn for another.

Jane’s Best Bets (9/7 – 9/11)

September 7, 2011 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

This week, it’s all Greek to me.  Well, that’s not really the truth.  It’s only partially Greek, with a little Italian, a little German, and a little Hispanic, mixed in with many other things.  Variety is the spice of life, so if you want to spice up yours, check out some of these suggestions for things to do!

On Wednesday, make your way to Courthouse Square for The Square Is Where featuring Gary Hill (Solo Classic Rock).  Art lovers should hop on over to the University of Dayton’s Roesch Library Gallery for the University of Dayton Art Hop.  Looking to find a volunteer opportunity that matches your interests?  Consider attending Generation Dayton’s 2011 Volunteer Speed Match at the Dayton Racquet Club, where you will be able to “date” several non-profits in the area.  Also downtown, head to The Wine Gallery for their Weekly Wine Tasting or to the Trolley Stop for their Old Time Acoustic Jam.

On Thursday, there will be another “The Square Is Where” performance at Courthouse Square, which will feature Alabama Capital. If you are trying to eat healthier foods, consider making your way to the Centerville Farmers Market.  Head to McCormick & Schmick’s for their Greek Wine Dinner…make it a big fat party.  Although you may feel full afterwards, I don’t think it will make you permanently big and fat.  Don’t miss the nice weather and an opportunity to meet some of the players from the Dayton Silverback football team at Quaker Steak and Lube for their Bike Night.  Or head to Wings Sports Bar & Grille for their Weekly Cornhole Tournament.

Friday is when the Greek comes in – in a big fat way!  Go to the Dayton Greek Festival and be sure to eat a gyro…which is the result of butchering (unless you’re eating the vegetarian type) and whose name gets butchered on a regular basis.  The Italian also comes in with the Italian Fall Festa.  Both of these are awesome events that you do not want to miss.  They’re going on throughout the weekend, so make plans to head to one on Friday and the other on Saturday.  The Dayton Music Fest will be going on at a variety of locations this weekend to spotlight Dayton’s indie music scene.  So, music will also be ringing in your ears this weekend…perhaps literally with how loud speakers usually are!  (Please be sure to check out the link for a full listening of bands playing this weekend!)  All you ballerinas who have dreamed of making it big should put on your tutus and head to Victoria Theatre for the Dayton Ballet II Open Auditions.  And if you’re interested in theater, check out The Oldest Profession at the Dayton Theatre Guild or God of Carnage at The Loft Theatre.

On Saturday, you will again be able to get some fresh and healthy produce at the Troy Farmers Market or at the PNC 2nd Street Market, where there will be live music by Eli Everhart.  In addition to the Dayton Greek Festival and the Italian Fall Festa, you will be able to head to RiverScape for the Hispanic Heritage Festival.  If you’re German (or even if you’re not), participate in the German Wine Tasting at Arrow Wine in Centerville.  I’m usually used to German beer, but I’m guessing they have good wine too!  In addition, don’t miss some great live music as part of Dayton Music Fest…there are TONS of options at a variety of places including Canal Street Tavern, Oregon Express, Trolley Stop, and Blind Bob’s.

On Sunday, if you didn’t have a chance because you were working on some home improvement project (or something like that), be sure to check out either the Italian Fall Festa or the Dayton Greek Festival.  There are a couple other festivals going on including Guitar Fest at Stubbs Amphitheater and the Ohio Renaissance Festival.  Enjoy locally grown produce and locally made crafts at the Garden Station Sunday Market.  Make your way to Sinclair for A Day of Remembrance in order to observe the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.  At the Dayton Art Institute, enjoy one of their exhibits, including Exhibit: ‘Trash? Look Again’ and From Romance to Rifles: Winslow Homer’s Illustrations of 19th-Century America.  And if you feel like heading to your local bar or sitting on your couch to watch NFL football, that is perfectly okay too.

And now it’s time for the Dumb Joke of the Week. Drum roll please…

Wear short sleeves…support your right to bare arms!

These are just a few best bets from the DMM Calendar.  There are plenty more events listed there, so if you haven’t, I encourage you to check it out today!  Also, if you have an event to share or promote, please submit it– it’s great marketing and better yet, it’s FREE!  And finally, if you have a dumb joke to share, I’m all ears!

Have a great week Dayton!

Dayton Music Fest Moves to September, Opens Band Submissions

May 19, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

DMF 2011 logo by Ryan France

As summer (hopefully) approaches, many of us are already looking ahead to one of our favorite music events of the fall: Dayton Music Fest.  2011 marks the seventh of the festival, and we’re very excited to see what organizers Kyle Melton and Don Thrasher have in store after taking over the helm of the event last year.  One big change this year that’s already been revealed is that the festival is moving to September 9 & 10 from the first weekend of October.  So take a moment, and mark your calendars.

For the musically inclined among you, now is the time to submit to perform at this year’s festival.  Visit the Dayton Music Fest website’s submission page to learn more.  Submissions are open now through June 30th.

First Friday in Music: October Edition

September 29, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Saturday’s a big day for local music, but don’t forget that the weekend begins with First Friday.  Here are some of my picks for October’s festivities:

-From 1969 until 1984, the Hotmud Family was making waves in their native Dayton and beyond.  They were known for performing traditional American music which they recorded and released on Cincinnati label Vetco in the 1970’s.  A new album, The Complete Vetco Sessions is now available, and the Hotmud Family will be performing at Canal Street Tavern this weekend for three shows that benefit WYSO.  You can get tickets for the Friday night show at WYSO’s website.

–Lucky Spauling will perform at the Trolley Stop beginning at 9:30pm.

-Friday night marks the start of Gearfest, a weekend long celebration of outdoor/active living.  We’ve got details on the gear side of things in the Active Living section of Dayton MostMetro, but did you know that there’s also music?  On Friday night, Ben Rivet better known as BJSR will emcee and perform along with Magic Jackson.

-Speaking of festivals, Poster-tastic kicks off Friday night at Derailed Salon in the Oregon District.  Although not a concert, Poster-tastic celebrates the art of gig posters and is considered a sister event to Dayton Music Fest.  In the show’s third year, you’ll have a chance to vote for best gig poster and you can purchase your wristband for Dayton Music Fest right then and there.

-If you’re going to be spending the evening in Yellow Springs, check out Sawgrass performing at Peach’s Grill.

-For First Friday with a beat, head over to c{space.  DAS EFX will perform along with a great lineup of local hip hop artists including Ohio Hip Hop Award winner, Status Flo.  Check out the lineup here.

More First Friday happenings are available on the Dayton MostMetro Events Calendar.  Is there something you’re excited about on Friday night?  Add it to the calendar, and tell us about it in the comments!

Jane’s Best Bets (9/29 – 10/3)

September 29, 2010 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

It was great seeing so many of you at Oktoberfest at the Dayton Art Institute this weekend!  Although Dayton’s Oktoberfest is officially over for the year, October is just beginning this week.  You’re probably thinking, “How in the world could this happen?”  I did too.  However, when I asked my buddy Jeeves, he told me that in another part of the world, Munich, Oktoberfest actually starts in September and ends in October.  Having this mystery solved, hopefully we can all sleep well tonight.  But before hitting the hay, let’s check out our options as Oktober…I mean October…begins.

On Wednesday, head on over to the University of Dayton’s ArtStreet for the SO Percussion: Workshop & Jam Session.  There are opportunities for audience participation, so if you have always dreamed of playing the triangle, here is your opportunity.  Are you a high school student?  If so, I’m surprised you’re reading this.  If not, do you know a high school student?  If you answered yes, encourage him/her to check out the College Prep Night presented by Fifth Third Bank at Fifth-Third Field.  Plus, there is an opportunity for those who RSVP in advance to win a $1,000 scholarship!  If you love flowers, consider going to Going Green in Dayton at GalleryBlue Man Group St. John, where you will have the opportunity to look at photos, sketches, and paintings by local artists of over 120 wild flowers in Dayton environments.  And finally on Wednesday, if you’re looking for something that is unique and fun, check out the Blue Man Group as they perform at the Schuster Center.  Although they describe themselves as blue, I have heard they are actually mauve…“mauvelous” that is!

On Thursday, Give the Best Pint in Town at the Community Blood Center! if you didn’t have the opportunity to do so last week.  While you’re there, get your very own, super cool Octoberfest t-shirt!  If you are looking for pointers on how to write grants (i.e. how to get free money!), check out the Southwest Ohio American Association of Grant Professionals Regional Conference at Atrium Medical Center.  If you grew up always wanting to be a princess, head on over to the Nutter Center for Disney On Ice presents Princess Classics.  Also, Tinker Bell (a.k.a. the “hottest fairy of them all”, according to a five-year old boy I know) will make an appearance.

On Friday, if fashion is your thing, check out the BRAVO! Fashion Show and Champagne Brunchat the Sinclair Ponitz Center to benefit the Dayton Opera.  If you’re feeling like a Friday after-work happy hour is in order, consider heading to Arrow Wine’s Centerville location for their 13th Annual Oktoberfest Celebration…which betcha by golly wow is actually in October!  On Friday night, downtown is definitely the place to be.  Head over to The Neon for a sneak preview of the award-winning documentary, The Elephant in the Living Room.  Or, before the weather gets too cold, get that bike out and join the Courteous Mass October Ride.  If you enjoy the outdoors, then you will definitely want to check out GearFest at Eastwood MetroPark.  This outdoor festival will feature athlete demonstrations, competitions, camping, the latest products/gear, and music!  Also, while downtown, check out First Friday, which will feature a variety of entertainment options, from live music to art galleries to bonfires!  (For more info on First Friday, click here.)   Or, head on over to the Firefly Building’s amazing rooftop for Pecha Kucha Dayton Vol. 5, which will involve snacks, drinks, social networking, and idea sharing with eight creative presenters.  And if you don’t mind the drive and would like to experience Oktoberfest again, head up to Minster for their version.  Although I’ve never been, I’ve heard that Minster’s Oktoberfest is famous for serving beer in half-gallon plastic jugs!

On Saturday, get off that couch and check out the 33rd Annual Spring Valley Potato Festival.  If you enjoy learning about other cultures, head over to Middletown for Middfest International 2010 Celebration of Botswana.  All you music fans will want to experience the Dayton Music Fest, which will feature numerous bands playing at several different Dayton venues.  If you want to be one of the first ones to get a pumpkin, head to Young’s Dairy for the 34th Annual Fall Farm Pumpkin Festival.

Also on Saturday…All you motorcycle lovers better rev up your engines and speed over to Thomas Cloud Park for the Pink And Chrome – Ride for the Cure for Susan G. Komen for the Cure! And in the evening, even though the “official” fish fry season hasn’t yet started, check out the Fenwick High School Fish Fry, Monte Carlo, & Silent Auction night…where all proceeds raised will support student athletes at my alma mater!  Also, Minster Oktoberfest, The Elephant in the Living Room – Movie, and GearFest will all still be strong options!

On Sunday, check out the 2010 Harvest Fest at Garden Station Community Garden and Art Park.  Or, head to one of the many events you may have missed this week/weekend:  the 33rd Annual Spring Valley Potato Festival, the 34th Annual Fall Farm Pumpkin Festival, Minster Oktoberfest, Blue Man Group, The Elephant in the Living Room – Movie, or Midfest International Celebrates Botswana.  It’s truly going to be a “mauvelous” week in Dayton!

And now it’s time for the Dumb Joke of the Week. Drum roll please…

What would you get if you crossed two fish with two elephants?
A pair of swimming trunks.

These are just a few best bets from the DMM Calendar.  There are plenty more events listed there, so if you haven’t, I encourage you to check it out today!  Also, if you have an event to share or promote, please submit it – it’s great marketing and better yet, it’s FREE!   And finally, if you have a dumb joke to share, I’m all ears!

Have a great week Dayton!

Music Video Monday: September 27th edition

September 28, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

I don’t know about you, but I’m counting down the days until Saturday October 2nd.  That’s when Dayton Music Fest highlights some of the best music in the region for the sixth year in a row.  It was hard to choose a video to feature from the 20+ bands that are playing this year’s festival.  So I made my decision based on the fact that I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to this band’s latest release.  Bonneville’s newest album is called Drawing Maps and is available now.  You can see them at the Trolley Stop on Saturday beginning at 9pm as part of the Dayton Music Fest lineup.  For a complete list of Dayton Music Fest shows, check out the Dayton MostMetro Events Calendar.

2 Months Til Dayton Music Fest (video)

August 2, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

Happy Monday! There are a lot of great shows to talk about this week.  So while I’m getting organized and caffeinated, take a look at this great video by Shelly ‘GladGirl’ Hulce featuring music from the Turkish Delights.  Only 2 months until Dayton Music Fest…..

Last week for Dayton Music Fest submissions

July 26, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

As we prepare for another week of great music in Dayton, I wanted to put a quick reminder out there that this is the last week to submit your band for consideration to play in this year’s Dayton Music Fest.  Submissions end on Saturday, July 31st so stop by the Dayton Music Fest website to get your submission off to the organizers before then.

To get you in the festival mood, here’s Swearing at Motorists playing at the first ever Dayton Music courtesy of our friends at the Music Seen.
