4 new Gingko Trees line Stonemill Road.
We all remember several Ginkgo trees that were taken down in the University of Dayton area. The Gingko trees had lived peacefully in the area since the days before UD and during the NCR days. At that time, the decision to remove the trees was controversial, with folks choosing sides between the robust, sprawling trees, which were magical come fall…and the stinky, leafy giants with the thick-skinned fruit!
With that in mind, the Rubicon Mill section of Dayton is bringing the Gingko back….at least somewhat! 5 or 6 new Gingko trees have been replanted in the Stonemill area in hopes of reviving the lost look and feel of the botanical giants! Not only have Gingko trees been planted in the picturesque Rubicon Mill area, but a variety of trees have been planted along the streets in the South Dayton neighborhood.

Rubicon Mill boosts beautiful gardens.
Rubicon Mill encompasses the Patterson Homestead, which also touts a wide variety of trees and bushes that awaken this time of year. The Gingko tree has a rich history. They are affectionately called ‘living fossils’ as they are believed to be hundreds of thousands of years old. Their disease-free resilience has made these revered trees legendary. There is no doubt that the Gingko trees will be around for years to come, delighting Daytonians! And with any luck, they, too, will be enjoyed and remembered for their beauty….for many years to come!
