The incident began at 1:07 AM local time, near the intersection of East Fifth Street and Patterson Boulevard, in the heart of the Oregon District. Betts was armed with a .223-caliber rifle and high-capacity magazines. The quick response of law enforcement is credited with preventing further casualties.

The gunman, Connor Betts, was killed by police within a minute of opening fire. The shooting happened in the early hours of the morning in a popular entertainment area.

A memorial, known as the “Seed of Life”, was created in the Oregon District to honor the victims and support the community in their healing process. The memorial was a collaboration by Terry Welker, Jes McMillan, Sierra Leone, and James Pate and contains multiple components, including a stainless steel sculpture of nine leaves and a unity bench. But the most notable component might be the multi-colored mosaic. An estimated 5,000 people contributed to putting tiles in it.
