Coming Up in Local Jazz – August 28 through September 10

What is C’est Tout?

I went with my wife, Rosemary and some friends last Saturday night to see James and Moore at the C’est Tout Bistro 2600 Far Hills Avenue in Oakwood, Ohio. This was the Gable’s second trip to this venue and I’ll have to say it’s a unique experience. Chef/Proprietor Dominique Fortin says “You know, the thing that we do here is a French bistro, good food, fresh food at the right price.” It truly has the ambience of a French bistro, a very meticulous setting for your dining pleasure. To say the food is outstanding is a gross understatement; that combined with the service and the entertainment (the reason I came) made our two evenings something way above our normal life style. I’ll be honest, two retirees living on a fixed income budget makes me very apprehensive about dining in a fancy restaurant but after two trips I found their prices affordable and when you consider the quality of their cuisine, very affordable. You might want to check out their website.

Now lets get back to the reason for the trip, you know the Jazz Advocate doesn’t like to pay the fare for a good meal without some good entertainment. We’ve been following James & Moore for a number of years and I’ve seen Lou James for many years before they formed their duo. Lou is a superb musician who can do magical things on that state of the art keyboard he plays. His song list is virtually unlimited. How many guys do you know who can play Tin Roof Blues, Honky Tonk and just about all of the Great American Songbook? As to the Moore part ot the duo; Pamela especially loves the music of the 30’s and 40’s, the Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald tunes. The song’s that tell the stories of life and this young lady has the voice to deliver that kind of music. Pamela says “just 6 years ago I started to live out my dream to be a Singer” and I for one am glad she did.

In summary, a great time was had last Saturday by our group of friends. Great food, great service (Steve the bartender was really something) and last but not least, great entertainment. Entertainment that I feel is the perfect fit for a French bistro style venue. I know the economy is tough and James and Moore will be completing their ten month run this Saturday August 31st. I’m thinking about one more trip to France this coming weekend.

What is the Gabriel Foundation?

The Gabriel Foundation is non-profit operating under Jazz Advocate’s 501c3 and dedicated in supporting “Youth in Jazz” in our area.

Back in September of 2011, I was talking to a lady who lived in my apartment building and she was telling me about her eleven year-old grandson who played alto saxophone in an event with a group from the Stivers School for the Arts jazz orchestra. Of course she said he is very good and hoping to get into Stivers next year at age twelve. She told me he was renting his horn through the school and needed his own saxophone and the family didn’t have the money to buy one.

Since then Jazz Advocate started the Gabriel Foundation and partnered with WDPS-FM 89.5, the DABICO Artist Factory and Jazz Central. We held a number of concerts to generate funds to obtain and/or refurbish musical instruments for deserving local youth who otherwise could not afford one. On Sunday, October 23, 2011 the Gabriel Foundation presented young Cade Stevenson an alto saxophone. Turns out he later auditioned at Stivers and called me with the good news that he had been accepted into Stivers School of the Arts.

Presently the Gabriel Foundation is working with Dayton area High Schools to produce a series of “High School Jazz Night” events at Jazz Central, who is donating the use of their club to us. This is a slight change of direction for the Gabriel Foundation and will be an addition to the obtaining musical instruments for youth in our area. The high school jazz nights will not only contribute to keeping jazz alive in our area but more importantly it will give our jazz students a chance to perform in an authentic jazz club in front of a live jazz audience, which is an educational experience they will not get in the classroom or a traditional school concert setting. In addition the event income goes to the school’s music program.

On Friday, June 14, 2013 the Gabriel Foundation held a benefit concert for Stivers student David Jenkins, which was billed as the first “High School Jazz Night” at Jazz Central. We have several schools on board and will be offering the Odyssey Combo (students from Centerville and Alter), on Friday, August 16th. I have a list of prospective high school jazz band directors to contact but we are at the point where we need to generate some funds for operation and advertising for the series to insure the productions. Coming Up in Local Jazz – July 31 through August 13

As a rule, I don’t dwell on past jazz performances but sometimes they’re so good you want to let your readers know what they missed in hopes some small spark of memory may entice them to come to see the artists who performed on a particular occasion the next time they’re available. So to all the fans that missed this great show remember the artist names for future events.

What a night; the place was packed and the joint was jumppin! This was another outstanding show at Jazz Central showcasing the Mighty Hammond Organ. In this case three organs manned by three of the best in the business – Tony Monaco, Lincoln Berry and John Slate accompanied by Rob Pad dock on drums and Cameron Voorhees on guitar. That’s right folks; just five players on stage and the walls were vibrating like they couldn’t hold anymore sound! Last night wasn’t a show; it was an experience of what Jazz is

supposed to be in what a Jazz Club is supposed to be.

The show started with a set of all players on the stage trading fours, switched over to a set for each organ player accompanied by drums and guitar and then back to all five players for the finale. The final song Back to the Chicken Shack by Jimmie Smith was the longtime favorite of Miss Freddie, who managed the club for many years before her passing. At Jazz Central, because of its longevity, you can feel the spirit of many people and their associated music living on.

There is no way to give justice to what came off at this event with words; you just had to be there. In addition to their weekly Sunday Night Jazz Jam events, Jazz Central offers many special jazz events in the $5 to $10 range, which can’t be beat for entertainment value. Man, it’s great in Dayton!

Who was Rick Evans?

A wonderful jazz singer, winner of 2010-11 Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District Lifetime Achievement Award and dear friend of mine passed away on Tuesday, July 9th.

Excerpt of an article by Adam Alonzo contributing writer for the Dayton Daily News:

The Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District gave significant recognition to jazz vocalist Rick Evans, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award of $10,000 for his outstanding musical accomplishments and community contributions. “(He) has touched so many lives through music, his commitment to the preservation of jazz, and his outreach to seniors and people in need,” said County Commissioner Debbie Lieberman.

“I’ve never read a note of music in my life,” Evans remarked at the award ceremony. “I’ve never had a voice lesson or anything like that, yet still I love music.” He took to the stage himself during his career in the Air Force, singing in USO shows and base entertainment programs in the U.S. and overseas. After retiring from the military, Evans settled in Dayton and began to work for the postal service. While he delivered the mail, he was given the nickname “The Singing Postman,” Evans remained active as an entertainer in the area, performing with the Masters of Jazz combo and the Dayton Jazz Orchestra. He sang regularly for the residents of more than 150 nursing homes, traveling to many remote locations throughout seven counties. “Thank God for the GPS,” he said. “I think I’m the only one in the world who has a wheelchair brigade,” Evans said of his elderly listeners. “It warms the heart to see them smile, to laugh, to sing, even get up and dance and have a good time remembering what I call the good old days,”
It is was with great pride that I had submitted the name of Richard Lee Evans for Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District’s 2009-2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. Rick had so many fans and friends that I felt extremely lucky to have been in the right place at the right time to be his nominator.RIP Rick Evans

A memorial service will be held 6:00 P.M., WEDNESDAY, July 17, 2013 at Thomas Funeral Home, 4520 Salem Ave. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. A committal service will be held at the Dayton National Cemetery (date & time TBA) In lieu of flowers please make donations at any W.P.C.U. to The Rick Evans Music Scholarship Fund. In addition some of his musician friends and I are planning a celebration of Rick’s life memorial to be on Monday, August 12th.

Jazz Spotlight: Youth in Jazz + Upcoming Jazz June 5 – 18

About Our Area’s Youth in Jazz:

A slight deviation in this week’s article from “Who is,” “What is” to “About?” I assume if you’re reading this column you are a jazz fan and if so you understand “Youth in Jazz” is our future. Fortunately for us, most of the high schools and many of the middle schools in our area have music programs that include jazz. Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton, Beavercreek High School, Centerville High School, Fairborn High School, Xenia High School and lets not forget the University of Dayton just to name a few: In addition the Dayton Jazz Orchestra has been putting on a jazz camp for our youth for many years – Todd Couch says “there is still time to register for the 20th Miami Valley Jazz Summer Camp!!! June 10-14th at Kettering Fairmont High School. We even have a few scholarships available!!! Go to www.daytonjazzorchestra.com for more information.” The last “Jazz and Beyond” event at the Dayton Art Institute was High School Night featuring the Centerville High School Jazz 1, Jazz Combo 1 and Student Combo called “The Odyssey.” Taking off on this High School Night idea, on June 14 the Gabriel Foundation in conjunction with Jazz Central is producing a special concert to help generate funds for David Jenkins’ quest to attend the Skidmore Summer Jazz Institute, in New York. David and some of his Stivers student friends have formed a quintet for the evening’s entertainment with:

Jazz Spotlight: Robert Sanae + Upcoming Jazz May 8-21

Who is Robert Sanae?

Dayton native, Robert Sanae, born Robert Jones, is a product of a rich musical heritage with relatives who were accomplished musicians of groups such as ‘Sun’ and ‘Dayton’, and his father an original member of the acclaimed Ohio Players. Robert is a multi-genre producer, composer, writer as well as a multi-instrumentalist. Robert began his professional career as a member of the R&B Group ‘Zapp’ featuring Roger Troutman, where he was a trumpeter, keyboardist, vocalist where he learned numerous other skills, including audio engineering and editing. With the Troutman organization, his credits encompassed five albums out of the Troutman camp, which included ‘Zapp IV’ and its hit track “Computer Love,” Robert composed and arranged the horn parts for several tracks as well as singing background and some small lead vocals on that project; Roger Troutman’s solo project, ‘The Human Body’; Shirley Murdock’s Debut album ‘As We Lay’ and Sugarfoot’s solo Project ‘Kiss.’ His story is not unlike so many other musicians/artists throughout the world that have navigated the vast music abyss along with trying to make a living via a life in music. He came to the realization some time ago that he must accept who he is to the core and not attempt to ignore the gift bestowed upon him by his creator. After ending his tenure with the Troutman organization, Robert moved to California to further his career as a writer, composer, artist as well as a producer and later moved to New Orleans, La. Over the years Robert has created an extensive catalog of productions ranging from R&B, Hip Hop, Neo-Soul, Pop, Adult Contemporary Smooth/Contemporary Jazz and Rock and continues to develop as a producer/composer/musician, aspiring to become a master producer/composer. This coming Saturday, May 11 you will be able to sample some of Sanae’s expertise at Jazz Central in Dayton, when he and some of his friends will introduce his latest venture called “Prelude to Carter Creek – Indigo Blue.” Sanae reaches out to a broad audience, while injecting the highest level of musicianship into every note, phrase and song. I’ve seen Sanae perform on trumpet, keyboard and bass, although a credible player on all instruments, his main forte, in my opinion is the composition and the blending of sounds. What comes out is the real McCoy, a truly new version of an old art form.

My near term recommendations for some good upcoming entertainment: this Thursday it’s High School Jazz night at the Dayton Art Institute, Friday it’s the Spring Edition of Urban Nights in downtown Dayton and Saturday check out Robert Sanae at Jazz Central. Life is short, get out and hear some good live Jazz!

Who is a Lincoln Berry?

Jazz organist Lincoln Berry: Was born in St. Paul, MN and was the oldest of twelve. His musical background started on the piano at age three and played his first concert when he was at five yrs old. He was named church pianist at age eight. At age fourteen he played guitar as guest artist with Sam Cooke before he left the gospel group. At 16 he played behind Mahalia Jackson for several appearances with rev Billy graham crusade. At 17 he worked with young musician in several states in the mid-west training them to set-up and play the Hammond organ as churches in his denomination were acquiring them in large numbers. At 18 he did first pro gig as bassist, his 2nd as pianist, his 3rd as drummer and a few more on the piano all as a senior in high school.

Ten years ago Lincoln gave me the following for an article I was writing for a Dayton paper: “In 1962 started my true pro career started in Denver co. I was miles from home, had no job, almost broke, and didn’t want to be a burden on my family (after all I am the eldest of 11). I was walking down Welton Street and saw a sign that read, “talent contest every Tuesday night, winners receive $50, $25, $10″. I said to myself “I’m going to win that contest!” when upon entering the club there sat my favorite instrument, a “b3”! I was dashed when the bartender said, “that ended two weeks ago. We now have twist contest” (chubby checker era}. As I was leaving, the owner was coming in the door and asked, “May I help you young man?” (I looked all of 16). I said “no sir. They don’t have contest here any more.” “What do you do?” he asked, “Play the organ” I replied. He wanted to hear me so I played for him. I only knew about five secular standard tunes. Later I found out he and the barmaid were discussing my performance. She said, “He’ll never make it”. He said, ” Look at those big feet. He’s our next organist”. I would be replacing the well-known James Booker. That night I stopped in to hear the group. I thought I will never be able to do this, but I’m hungry so I must. I met the fellows and played for them. The guitarist (Brice Roberson) asked where I was from. It turned out he knew my cousin Thelma who was a dancer at the key club inMinneapolis. He said he knew of my reputation as a top gospel organist in the mid west. The bandleader, homer brown (tenor sax) showed me some charts and asked me to play them. He said, “you have an excellent left foot, but for jazz you need to develop your left hand. The singer (Gladys Denton) acted kind of snooty and gave me the feeling that I wasn’t good enough for them. I was to start in ten days. Homer worked with me every day and I learned three to five tunes and/or arrangements a day. I was only to play bass lines from the start, but after two nights I could not hold back from copying chords I heard from Brice who said “he said he has ears as big as this room” Three weeks and 100 tunes later, Gloria Lynn was to headline three days at the club. That was my first time backing well-known artist. I did not own my own b3 so I was stuck at this location for two and a half years. It so happened the club owner Leroy Smith was a promoter and hired many national known artists for concerts and performances at his club. Our band backed up about 75% of them.”

Lincoln and Joselane “Jo” Berry have been synonymous with the Jazz Central night club on East Third Street many years. Club owner Charles Stone told me “Lincoln Berry walked in one day and stayed thirty years.” They left Dayton on April 19, 2007 and went back to Minneapolis where Jo passed away on October 1, 2009. Lincoln comes back to the club on a yearly basis and will be performing a special concert with guitarist Cameron Voorhees this Saturday, April 27th.

Jazz Spotlight: Dean Simms + Upcoming Jazz April 10-23

Local (Springfield, Ohio) jazz artist, Dean Simms, has created a 90 minute full length musical stage play called that tells the story about the amazing life and career of Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong. This musical tells the story about the amazing life and career of Louis Armstrong in a full 90 minute bigger than life stage production. His script was selected out of 100’s by the DC Black Theater Festival to be performed in the nation’s capital on June 21-29 2013.

I have always considered Dean an outstanding trumpet player ever since the days when Rosemary and I first caught him performing at the old Silver Fox Night Club in Dayton. As it’s my nature to mentally track the players I like, I took great interest of an email I received from Dean in October of 2011: “Hello Ron, here is the link to my next Satchmo concert. It is sponsored by the Springfield Arts Council, and the Clark County Historical Society. This show is both educational, highly entertaining and I have a great group of Ohio State players as backup.

My next involvement with Dean’s Satchmo project: “Once upon a time in America there was a young boy who learned to play a horn in reform school, became the ambassador of jazz to all nations and left us with a wonderful world. On Saturday, March 10th, 2012 a tribute to Louie Armstrong was held at Jazz Central, the club that’s bringing jazz back. Dean Simms and a very talented group of Ohio State players brought “Satchmo” back on that evening. This resurgence of jazz project was sponsored by Jazz Advocate and WDPS-FM radio.”

After the tribute to Louie at Jazz Central, which ranks #1 to any live performance I’ve ever seen, I was able to convince the folks at the Dayton Art Institute to include Dean’s show in this year’s “Vectren Jazz and Beyond” series. You will be able to catch them on September 12, which would be a wise move because I have a feeling the big times will be taking this group on high. As Dean says “My tribute to Louis Armstrong has been presented in concerts, festivals, state fairs, and night clubs as a band only. I have now taken it much further to bring his life into a full length musical play from the various time periods in his life when his career began in the 1920’s to 40 years after his passing. His accomplishments in over 35 movies, touring abroad, hit records, civil rights movement, all done in a bigger than life stage production.”

I recently backed the 1st American Rock Star Louis Armstrong the Musical on Kickstarter with a small contribution to help Dean with this endeavor. He needs our help for travel, set design, hotels, food, rehearsal venue etc, which we can provide through Kickstarter. Scott Gasaway and the Stivers Jazz Orchestra

Because I’ve been to six big band performances in the last couple of weeks, this is a good time to write about the impact of jazz band music past and present day in our area. The overall subject is too large to cover in depth but you can find an interesting read here.

A big band is a type of musical ensemble that originated in the United States and is associated with jazz and the Swing Era typically consisting of rhythm, brass, and woodwind instruments totaling approximately 12 to 25 musicians. Standard 17-piece instrumentation evolved in the big-bands, for which many commercial arrangements are available. This instrumentation consists of five saxophones (most often two altos, two tenors, and one baritone), four trumpets, four trombones (often including one bass trombone) and a four-piece rhythm section (composed of drums, acoustic bass or electric bass, piano and guitar).

There were two distinct periods in the history of popular bands. Beginning in the mid-1920s, big bands, then typically consisting of 10–25 pieces, came to dominate popular music. At that time they usually played a form of jazz that involved very little improvisation, which included a string section with violins, which was dropped after the introduction of swing in 1935.

Some names you’re likely to be familiar with today: Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman and Glen Miller because today’s bands play much of their music. The big bands of old toured the country and attracted large crowds, today as a rule those audiences are no longer available but we are fortunate to have many college and high school jazz bands in our area in addition several bands that still survive the leaner economics, mainly because the players love the music and want to keep it going. In today’s market you will also find pocket bands made up of fewer players selected in a manner to play the big band charts.

Speaking of pocket bands and getting back to the performances I’ve seen lately on the 14th of this month The ShinSings Orchestra was at the Dayton Art Institute, a week prior on the 7th it was the Jazz Central Big Band, going forward it was the Sinclair Jazz Ensemble on the 15th, Stivers Jazz Orchestra on the 18th, Generations Big Band on the 21st and this last Saturday, March 23rd it was the fourth annual Jazzcakes where the Centerville School’s put on a benefit concert consisting of three middle school and three high school jazz ensembles. Some other area jazz bands/events I should mention are the Beavercreek Weekend of Jazz where a dozen or more local middle and high school bands compete. The Dayton Jazz Orchestra, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Blue Wisp Big Band and coming in August a series of five weeks of big bands at RiverScape in Dayton.

One final note, I’m told on April 10th at Cline Elementary School in Centerville the Stand Kenton Alumni band concert will perform along with a pre-concert student jam session, from 6:30-7:15. Check it out here.

Jazz Spotlight: Scott Gasaway and Stivers Jazz Orchestra + Upcoming Jazz March 13 – 26

Stivers Leader Student Combo (1) Scott Gasaway is the new Band Director at Stivers School for the Arts – though he’s not new to jazz, or to the Dayton area. Born on November 9, 1987, in San Diego, California, Scott’s family moved to Dayton when he was just six years old. Scott credits his mom, Lourdes, with providing him — and his two brothers, Nicholas and Matthew with supporting their education in the arts, an opportunity she did not have as a child.

Scott came up through the Centerville High School band program, which is where, under the guidance of many highly influential teachers, he discovered his passion for music and decided that music was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Upon his graduation, Scott went on to pursue music education and saxophone at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he studied under saxophonist Dino Govoni and saxophonist and clarinetist Shannon LeClaire and performed with vibraphonist and composer Victor Mendoza and bassist Oscar Stagnaro.

Upon graduation from Berklee, Scott accepted a position as the high school music director with Hull Public Schools, in the Town of Hull, Massachusetts, where he was put in charge of starting the band program — teaching band, piano and music technology. It was while he was back home in Dayton to visit his family last summer, that Scott received a call from Stivers Jazz Orchestra Director Emeritus Claude Thomas.

Scott had met Thomas when Thomas was a faculty member of the Miami Valley Jazz Summer Camp and Scott was still an aspiring jazz musician. Thomas was calling to say that he had retired from Stivers to focus on composing full-time and that he wanted to recommend Scott for his position. The rest, as they say, is history.

Scott is now responsible for the operation of the band at Stivers School for the Arts, where he teaches music theory, directs the middle-school concert band, the high-school symphonic wind orchestra and the jazz orchestra. “It keeps me on my toes — and I can’t imagine doing anything else,” he says, with great pride and excitement.

Scott will make his debut with the Stivers musicians in their March 18 concert entitled “On the Shoulders of Giants” — a salute to the celebrated Stivers student musicians who captured national honors at three separate Berklee High School Jazz Festivals in Boston and who were invitees and performers at Lincoln Center during the New York City Jazz Festival last year.

The March 18 concert is also a celebration of the release of the new CD “From Boston to New York.” The Stivers musicians will be joined by international jazz artist Greg Abate, who played lead alto sax with the Ray Charles Orchestra and who has recorded with jazz legends Rufus Reid and Kenny Washington. The evening’s program will include works from Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Buddy Rich and more.

Jazz Spotlight: Randy Fankell + Upcoming Jazz Feb. 27 – Mar. 12

Who is Randy Fankell:

I have known and followed Randy Fankell for many years and to this day, he is one of my favorite jazz drummers.

Randy has played drums for more than four decades, making his professional debut at 18 years of age with the Steve Adams Blues Band. Following a brief stint in college, Randy opted for education “on the road” spending the 70’s and part of the 80’s traveling and performing with a variety of bands and show groups. Traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada included working in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Chicago, and many other major venues. Randy has also performed in Aruba, Norway, Finland and Germany.

In the mid-80’s, Randy settled in Dayton, OH and started to pursue his real love in music – Jazz. Randy has performed with an array of artists such as Grammy-Winning composer, pianist and recording artist Bill Cunliff, and master bassist, the late great Dave Carpenter whose credits include Buddy Rich and Peter Erskine. Randy also played with recording artist Randy Villars, Tony Monaco and Doug Simon (Jack McDuff). From 2003 to 2010 Randy was the house drummer at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dayton, OH, performing with a variety of artists.

After years of professional musicianship as a ‘sideman’, Randy has moved into the leadership role with the Randy Fankell Jazz Trio/Quartet and has had numerous performances in local venues to include Wright State University and The Crowne Plaza Hotel, downtown Dayton.

Jazz Spotlight: WDPS-FM (Support our local Jazz Educators)

WDPS-FM is Dayton’s only jazz radio station. A non-commercial radio station; however, they do accept underwriting. They broadcast from the new David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center in downtown Dayton. The station is staffed by students and the following volunteers: Clay “The Cooker” Collins, Paul and Patti Gehred, Charles “The Ice Man” Stone, Kyle Fisk and Amanda Romero, Slammin’ Steve Wilson, Clifford Darrett, Jim Woodford, Mike Reisz, George Balog, Jazz Cat & Deb, ChrisSmith and program manager Chris “Hippie” Hartley.

4 years ago as we were preparing to move to our new studios at the David H. Ponitz career technology center. We decided to make a change in the format of the district’s radio station. When exploring the radio dial in Dayton I found that there was an underserved group of listeners; Jazz was just not getting its due in Dayton radio.

I made the announcement that The Dayton Public Schools’ radio station would become “All Jazz All the Time.” To begin to promote the new format I sought the advice of two people, Ron Gable of Jazz Advocate and Clay “The Cooker” Collins. After our first meeting we formed a partnership that i feel has benefited the Dayton Schools, Jazz Advocate and the local Dayton Jazz Scene. That partnership has sprouted many projects including, work with the Gabriel Foundation, hundreds of hours of on air promotion of local jazz events, free Jazz Listener Appreciation Concerts and much more.

One of the most noted outgrowths of that initial meeting is Clay “The Cooker” Collins being back on the radio in Dayton! Clay is an incredible talent who volunteers to be on the air each weekday and assist with the training of our students in radio broadcasting. Just the ability to interact with someone of his caliber and experience is a tremendous advantage for Dayton students. At the end of the day WDPS is still a teaching tool of the Dayton Public Schools. Students in The Radio & Television Broadcasting Class at Ponitz work on all aspects of running the radio station and web stream. From on air talent, to spot production, to preparing the broadcast logs. It is all about the students! Giving them exposure to Jazz is a great thing! They come to us thinking they will not like Jazz and leave our program with jazz favorites and a bit of knowledge of the jazz greats.

I encourage everyone to listen to WDPS-FM 89.5 Monday through Friday from 9:15 until 4:30 and 24 hours a day on WDPSFM.com.

Who is Bill Burns?

William (Bill) Burns is a Jazz Educator and Performer from Centerville Ohio: He is a music educator for the Centerville City Schools and president of the Jazz Education Connection of Ohio, a freelance saxophonist and recording artist.

Bill is an active educator and performer across southwest Ohio and teaches elementary general music and Jazz Ensemble in Centerville City Schools. He holds a B.A. in Music Education from the University of Dayton and Masters in Saxophone from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Bill is an in-demand clinician across southwest Ohio and has been invited to present at the national Jazz Education Convention and the Ohio Music Education Association conventions. He also maintains a busy performance schedule. Bill has recorded with numerous groups including the CCM Jazz Ensemble, The Dayton Jazz Orchestra, and the Bill Burns Quartet. Dayton Art Institute’s 2013 Vectren Jazz & Beyond

Centerville High School Jazz Ensemble

The Dayton Art Institute will present their 2013 Vectren Jazz & Beyond season on the second Thursday of the month this year. The schedule is as follows:

Jazz Central

Over the years many big bands have played at Jazz Central and back in the day they even had their own band. It’s my understanding their band was mostly made up of Air Force players and they always had a grate time playing the music they loved. Coming up on Thursday, January 17 that very same music is returning to Jazz Central. This is because club owner Charles Stone had saved the original charts and Mike Rinderle had the idea of getting a band together to fill in the spot of the vacationing Generations Big Band. Well Mike has assembled some of the very best players in our area:

Happy January 2nd! American jazz singer Arthur Prysock, best known for his live shows and his baritone influenced by Billy Eckstine was born on this day in 1929.

What is a Jazz Jam?

In simple terms a jam session is a musical act where musicians play by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. A regular jazz jam is usually sponsored by a venue where this is a predefined core group of paid regulars and any and all musicians who care to come and join in are welcome. The guest musicians or vocalist would need to check or sign in with the event MC to maintain a good performing balance.

There are regular ongoing jams in Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus, which are known well enough to draw guest performers both local and many times from out of town. Like I tell everyone, every chance I get, “Many times, depending upon who shows up, you get some of the very best jazz at jams!” Last Sunday at Jazz Central proved to be the case when the Slaughter Brothers, Clarence (saxophone) and William (trumpet) showed up to jam. Over the years many young jazz players have cut their teeth on Jazz Central’s stage, which has been home to Dayton’s longest running jazz jam.

The Slaughter brothers, who have been doing big things in South Carolina and New Orleans, are home for the holidays and we were treated to a rare performance. In addition to the Slaughters we had Kenny Baccus on organ, John Hampton Wagner as MC as well as trumpet and vocals and Greg Webster on drums, Clifford Darrett and Ahmed Abdullah on congas, and Ron Appleberry on bass as the basic jam core group. Additional guest performers included David Jenkins on saxophone and Darren Witherspoon on drums, two young Stivers School of the Arts students who were new to the jam sessions. Rounding out the evening were vocalist Jeff Ward and Always Triple, trombonist Mushandi Pillow, saxophonist Grant Koeller and drummers Henry Preston and Ismail Muhammad as well as Jack Hart on organ and Jerry Cox on flute. If I haven’t missed anyone (hopefully I’m correct on the spellings) there were eighteen on stage during the evening; what entertainment for a mere $2.00 cover charge.

Clarence started playing on the Jazz Central stage at age 12, was one of the Serious Young Musicians that played Showtime at the Apollo and has performed with some of today’s biggest names in New Orleans. Younger brother William Patrick who also grew up at the club is currently based in the South and comes back to us as a professional player of unbelievable skill. It’s my understanding that the brothers will be with us trough next Sunday’s jam and Clarence is scheduled to be part to Saturday’s “Secret! Who is Cameron Voorhees?

Master Sergeant Cameron R. Voorhees is a Guitarist with the United States Air Force Band of Flight’s Concert Band, Night Flight, and Prism Brass, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Cameron is one of many Band of Flight members both past and present who make a tremendous impact in our local jazz scene.

Sergeant Voorhees was born and raised in Leavenworth, KS, where he began studying guitar in the fourth grade. He graduated from LeavenworthSenior High School in 1976 and continued his studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Sergeant Voorhees graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Composition.

Sergeant Voorhees enlisted in the United States Air Force in August of 1992 and completed tours with Air Force Bands at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, and Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. He began his current assignment with the USAF Band of Flight in August 2004. In addition to his performance duties, he serves as Unit Security Manager and Operations Representative.

A couple of years ago I met Cameron at Jazz Central where he was a regular part of their jazz jams for a period of time. One thing led to another and he helped me book the Band of Flight Nighthawk Jazz Combo (one of the groups of which he was a member), for Jazz Advocate’s 2011 Jazz & Peace Festival that we held in Centerville at Stubbs Park.

I just recently receive an email announcement: Cameron will be retiring from 21 years in the USAF in January of 2013. Cameron has had a great career over the past 21 years and has done some amazing things. We are very proud of him and wish to celebrate his career. His official ceremony will be on Friday, January 25, 2013 here in Ohio at the base. He will be missed and we wish him the best in the next chapter of his life. In his spare time, Sergeant Voorhees is active in his local church and enjoys spending time with his family, studying the Bible and playing jazz in the local community.

Tonight Wednesday, December 19 – Tonight, for you dancers The Dayton Event Connection is featuring a ten piece swing band and The Steve Schmidt Organ Trio Christmas Spectacular w/Eugene Goss & Mandy Gaines is at the Comet Bar in Cincinnati.

Thursday December 20 – The Generations Big Band invites you to their “End of the World Concert “ at Jazz Central.

Friday December 21 – James and Moore are performing at the C’est Tout Bistro in Oakwood and the Dan Karlsberg Quartet is at the Blue Wisp in Cincinnati.

Saturday December 22 – Schwartz’s Point in Over-The-Rhine has The NEW Ed Moss Trio in Cincinnati and Steinhaus Restaurant has the Phil DeGreg Trio in Florence, KY.

Sunday December 23 – Wade Baker & Friends Christmas Party from 5 to 9 pm and the Jazz Jam Session w/ Kenny Baccus continues at Jazz Central in Dayton from 9 pm to midnight.

Monday December 24 – the John Taylor Trio is at the Brio Tuscan Grille in Beavercreek and James and Moore are at the C’est Tout Bistro in Oakwood.

Tuesday December 25 – Christmas Day – Happy Holiday!

Wednesday December 26 – John LaIacona is at Eddie Merlot’s in Cincinnati and Ricky Nye & Bekah Williams is at Chez Nora in Covington,KY.

Thursday December 27 – Songwriter showcase with Lisa Biales is at Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza in Worthington, OH and Ricky Nye & Dottie Warner is at Arnold’s Bar & Grill in Cincinnati.

Friday December 28 – Shawn Stanley Trio is at Carvers Steaks & Chops in Centerville, OH and April Aloisio sings at Bella Luna Café inCincinnati.

Saturday December 29 – There is a tribute to Ray Charles at Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza and the Erik Augis Trio is at the Worthington Inn both in Worthington, OH.

Sunday December 30 – the Jazz Jam Session w/ Kenny Baccus is at Jazz Central in Dayton and Hoo Doo Soul Band is at the Rumba Café in Columbus.

Monday December 31 – Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra is at the Clintonville Woman’s Club and the Worthington Inn has the Rachel Sepulveda Trio in Worthington, OH.
