There’s a new spot for subs, sports and spirits in Kettering.  After much anticipation The Submarine House opens today in the old Family Video Store space on Dorothy Lane.  Open daily from 10am- the kitchen is open til midnight every night.  Best known for their famous Cheese steak, they’ve expanded the menu to include tacos, pizza, salads and more. Brody Danner, who shares ownership of the company with his brother Jason shares, “it will be our biggest store to date at 4,600 square feet with a 2,000-square-foot patio, totaling 6,600 serviceable square footage. Registration Opens For Mud Volleyball April 1st!

It’s the largest mud volleyball tournament in the country. Mud Volleyball for Epilepsy is a muddy good time, featuring volleyball, beer, raffles, food, music and more.  In the past over 250 teams  have join forces to play in the mud for charity. Scott Barnett serves at the chair, Joe Erickson is co-chair, they’ve been doing it for while.

Teams have the choice to select the category they’d like to play in:

  • Competitive: for the go-getters out there, this tournament bracket seeds automatically from morning round-robin play into afternoon. Want a chance to be crowned Champions of MUD? Look no further.

  • Non-Competitive: in it to sorta/maybe win it? We’ve got just the spot for you. Morning round-robin play will end and you will have an opportunity to elect to continue your day for a more relaxed tournament bracket. All of the fun, less of the pressure.

Your team needs a minimum of 6 players and a maximum of 10 (including you). At least two of the players must be female. All players must be 16 years of age by the tournament date. You will need their email addresses and t-shirt sizes to register them to your team. Payment must be made when you register.  Register in April or May and your team fee is $375, in June it goes up to $400 and in July you’ll pay $450. One of the advantages of early registration is you’ll have first pick of the time you get to play.

This year’s theme: the WHITE OUT. Bring your white tux, your favorite white pair of shoes, and a bright white hat. Of course we can promise you they won’t be white when you leave!

If you raise enough money your team can call the Taj Mahal headquarters. You’ll have a tent and chairs set up for you. The best part about that is you won’t have to haul mud caked chairs home!

Funding raised goes to the research and programs, of the Epilepsy Foundation and all funds raised here will go to the Ohio budget to help  the more than 126,000 people with epilepsy in Ohio, says Executive Director Crystal Hagans.

If you don’t to play you can always volunteer and you’ll get a cool t-shirt for your time. From selling beer tickets to running through the mud, there’s a job for everyone.

Featuring 35+ volleyball courts filled with mud, live music and cold refreshments, the event attracts over 4,000 people each year. Teams battle for the coveted Budweiser trophies and bragging rights.
The event takes place at Jay Lake (behind Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark).

The Psychedelic Furs To Play The Rose July 6th

The Psychedelic Furs have announced additional dates for their Made Of Rain 2022 Tour in support of their new album Made Of Rain — the band’s first new album since 1991. The tour will feature support by special guest X and includes a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center at The Heights onWednesday, July 6.

The Psychedelic Furs may not have invented rock & roll per se, but their influence since arriving on the post-punk scorched-earth landscape four decades ago has reverberated and resonated among all those who cherish the sweet-and-sour spot where rawness and romanticism meet. Born out of the UK rock scene and led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands at college and alternative radio scoring a multitude of major hits with “Love My Way,” “Pretty In Pink,” “Heaven,” “The Ghost In You,” and “Heartbreak Beat” in all releasing eight studio albums, spawning several compilations, a boxed set, a live concert DVD and inspiring one of the most iconic motion picture soundtracks of all time.   Their latest release Made Of Rain became the Furs’ second highest charting UK Album ever and was prominently featured in the end of year “Best Albums” roundup in a multitude of publications worldwide. The Furs especially thrive live in concert having headlined the U.K.’s famed Glastonbury Festival, performing at sold out gigs at the California’s Hollywood Bowl and continuing to tour quite regularly around the globe. The Psychedelic Furs touring lineup remains Richard Butler (vocals); Tim Butler (bass); Rich Good (guitar); Mars Williams (saxophone); Amanda Kramer (keyboards) and Zachary Alford (drums).

Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in the first wave of LA’s flourishing punk scene; becoming legendary leaders of a punk generation.  Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978, followed by seven studio albums released from 1980-1993. Over the years, the band has released several critically acclaimed albums, topped the musical charts with regularity and performed their iconic hits on top television shows such as Letterman and American Bandstand.   X’s first two studio albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift are ranked by Rolling Stone among the top 500 greatest albums of all time.  The band continues to tour with the original line-up fully intact: Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake.

“Colors of Spring” at the ARTery

The ARTery Gallery has a new Exhibit on display for April and May, “Colors of Spring”.  Please join us in welcoming a new Member Artist to our Co-Op Gallery, Charlene Fox, a truly lovely watercolorist who often incorporates cold wax and encaustic techniques into her work.  Our Visiting Artist this Month is Joanne Janetta, a local Photographer who loves to capture the beauty of Nature with the lens of her camera. 

They are introducing their Highlighted Artist of the Month, Samantha Farkas who is a very talented watercolor and ink artist whose work is not only creative and fun, but it is sure to make you smile.

“Primarily“ is one of Farkas’ newest paintings and a perfect example of one of her colorful, whimsical, and adorable bird paintings.  The birds are painted in a variety of shapes, colors, and orientations, and each one seems to have it’s own unique personality. We hope you will take time this month to come meet the artist in person and see her wonderful wall of work at the ARTery Gallery this First Friday in April from 5-9pm.

Samantha Farkas was encouraged from a very young age to follow her passion in the arts, with her late grandfather advising her to “travel the world, capture the perfect photo, and then paint it.” Samantha has indeed taken this wisdom to heart, travelling across North America, Japan, and Central Europe in pursuit of adventure and the perfect photo. Observing local flora and fauna, especially birds, provides her predominant artistic inspiration and satisfaction during her travel experiences. The birds and other wildlife of her Midwestern home are a perennial muse for her work as well. The artist captures the individuality and unique characteristics of each plant and animal, and incorporates the natural movement of wind, water, and wings into each line drawing and splash of color to call attention to the oft-overlooked details of the majestic creatures just in front of each of us, and of those awe-inspiring creatures hidden throughout the world. 

Farkas developed and refined her artistic focus during her undergraduate studies at Kentucky’s Morehead State University. She has displayed her work in a variety of mediums within galleries across Ohio and Northern Kentucky with regular appearances in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton. She presently shares her abilities and insight as an art instructor at Raise Your Brush in Centerville, Ohio.  The artist is an Ohio native who has resided in Yellow Springs for the past decade.

Country music from The Roads Below & Jamie Suttle

The Roads Below was formed by Arkansas native singer/songwriter Phil Evans, and Los Angeles-based guitarist Max Martilik. Shortly after meeting in the Spring of 2015, the two moved to Nashville where they linked up with local musicians to complete their lineup and establish their roots.

Mixing hard-hitting melodies with a twist of homegrown country edge, the band brings a fresh and dynamic sound to the current country scene.

“I Want Us,” the band’s debut self-released single, organically garnered attention, amassing over 5 million streams without any mainstream press or radio.

That was followed up by a series of self-released singles and sold-out Nashville shows before linking up with War Road Music, where they are now preparing to release their debut LP.

Miami Valley Meals Celebrates 2nd Anniversary

Miami Valley Meals, a nonprofit organization that turns donated food items into chef-prepared meals for those in need, marks its second anniversary today, March 25, 2022.

The organization as it exists today began with friends and former co-workers from the culinary industry providing pandemic-relief support to the House of Bread and St. Vincent de Paul. Soon, with initial funding from the Miami Valley Community Action Partnership and with food contributions from The Foodbank, the group began preparing and donating meals to various nonprofit organizations across the Miami Valley that were already providing services to the hungry.

Throughout the organization’s lifetime, Miami Valley Meals (MVM) has provided 304,000 meals to 34 zip codes and has recovered 247,000 pounds of food from 30 sources. MVM prepares an average of 3,540 meals each week that are distributed to the hungry by an average of 40 distribution partners per month.

“Early on, we recognized the tremendous work that dedicated nonprofits were already doing to address the hunger problem in our area,” said Amanda DeLotelle, Executive Director of MVM. “To be most effective in reaching hungry folks, we decided to take advantage of those existing pathways. The meals are free to the nonprofits, resulting in people being fed and more room in their budget to connect individuals with other wrap-around services.”

Over the past year, MVM transformed its headquarters on Edwin C. Moses to a fully operational kitchen so all meals can be prepared and packaged in one place. Previously, the group’s culinary operations were made possible by host kitchens at the Life Enrichment Center, Our Lady of the Rosary Church, and through a partnership with Daybreak by leasing space at Lindy’s Bakery.

“We are thankful for all of the support we have received from our partners, the coalition, and the community. Without it, we would not have been able to ‘Serve those who serve the hungry,’” said DeLotelle. “As we transitioned from being a bandaid operation to becoming a bridge to the future, we have grown to be more efficient and more purposeful. We are unwavering in our commitment to create meals made with love, and we are dedicated to being a cornerstone of support for those in the fight against food insecurity.”

In order to gain back his land, Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to rescue the feisty princess, Fiona. Setting off with his faithful companion, Donkey, Shrek begins the journey of a lifetime. Popeyes Adds New Sweet Treat to Menu

The chain recently welcomed back its Cajun Flounder Sandwich. Now available at Popeyes locations nationwide, the Cajun Flounder Sandwich begins with the main component: flounder. Sourced from the Pacific Ocean, the flounder filet light, flakey and seasoned in a blend of Cajun classic and spicy seasoning. It is fried and topped with barrel-cured pickles and tartar sauce and served on a buttery toasted brioche bun. This year, though, the annual fish sandwich offering comes in two varieties, with guests able to choose from classic or spicy.

Free Community Wellness Event at the Dayton Arcade

As Dayton moves into a post-pandemic world, the newly renovated Tank Inspired by CenterPoint Energy at the Dayton Arcade will host a community event that offers hope and healing.

“Now, more than ever, we need to tap into the value and healing resources that true community involves. Our overall health is dependent upon the proper balance of the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of ourselves. When one of those things is out of alignment, our whole system begins to suffer. This event was created to provide education, support, and community connections so we may begin to function as a whole and balanced entity,” said Misty Brown, owner of Wellspring Healing Studio and Founder of Love Shack.

The event will be held this Sunday from 11am – 4pm and will offer alternative healing methods such as aroma therapy, chakra screening, reiki, sound healing, art therapy, and more. Open to the broader Dayton community, organizers hope that this event will inspire new ways of thinking about health and self-care.

“There are so many valuable and unknown options to healing and wellness that offer risk free alternatives. It is my goal to provide education and hands on experience with these healing modalities to empower people to take control of their wellness journey and begin to treat themselves as a whole person,” said Brown.

Kettering Children’s Theater Presents: The Neverending Story

While escaping from bullies, Bastian bursts into an antique book store, where his curiosity leads him to a book called The Neverending Story. The adventure begins to unfold as the fantasy world of Fantasia is slowly devoured by a malevolent force called “The Nothing.” When Bastian reads a description of himself in the book, he begins to wonder if Fantasia is real and needs him to survive.

Vincent Van Gogh’s Birthday Means Discounted Admission at DAI

The Dayton Art Institute’s (DAI) latest Focus Exhibition, Van Gogh & European Landscapes, offers the Dayton region a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a remarkable pair of Van Gogh paintings, on loan to the museum from Switzerland. The DAI-exclusive exhibition opened earlier this month and continues through September 4.

Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, and the DAI will celebrate the artist’s birthday with a special museum admission discount on March 30 & 31. Mention Van Gogh’s birthday at the museum’s Guest Services Desk on either day and get $5 off one regular adult admission. The museum is open 11 a.m.–5 p.m. on March 30 and 11 a.m.–8 p.m. on March 31.

Regular museum general admission is $15 adults; $10 seniors (60+), active military and groups (10 or more); $5 students (18+ w/ID) and youth (ages 7–17); and free for children (ages 6 & younger). Admission includes access to the exhibitions Van Gogh & European Landscapes, Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms and Fired Imagination: Ancient Chinese Ceramics from the Nancy and Ed Rosenthal Family Collection, as well as the museum collection galleries.

“It is a true joy to experience real paintings by Vincent van Gogh in person and to see why he is considered the world’s most famous artist,” said Jerry N. Smith, Chief Curator and Director of Education. “You can see the vibrancy, the rich color and thick brush strokes that highlight his late paintings. In addition, you get to see his paintings alongside the works of several of the artists Van Gogh personally admired.”

The paintings of Vincent van Gogh are beloved and instantly recognized the world over for their brilliant color and bold brushwork. Despite his untimely death at the age of thirty-seven, Van Gogh worked intensely until the very end. The pair of landscape paintings in this exhibition were made in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, in July 1890, the final month of Van Gogh’s life. They are vibrant images that feature his signature style of thick dashes of color and quickly applied swirls made with a loaded brush.

 

This intimate Focus Exhibition also includes works by Charles Francois Daubigny, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Joseph Mallord William Turner, John Constable and others.

 

“This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view two Van Gogh paintings that are rarely seen outside Europe, and we are honored to be able to host them here in Dayton for the next few months,” said DAI Director & CEO, Michael R. Roediger. “Don’t miss the chance to see works in person, as well as the outstanding Special Exhibition Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms, another DAI exclusive, which is on view through May 22.”

McDonald’s Brings Back Szechuan Dipping Sauce

McDonald’s is surprising fans with the return of its fan-favorite Szechuan dipping sauce, the company announced on March 21. Limited edition packets of the sweet, spicy sauce will be available on the restaurant’s mobile app for a limited time starting March 31, according to a news release. Fans can enjoy it for free with any order of Chicken McNuggets, or they can can buy up to five a la carte via the app. “It’s only returned three other times in the past 24 years, and we’re excited for fans to get another taste of the elusive favorite for just a few days … while supplies last,” the release reads.

McDonald’s iconic Szechuan Sauce has a savory and slightly sweet taste profile with hints of soy, garlic, ginger and mild vinegar notes to round out your dipping sauce experience.

It’s only returned three other times in the past 24 years, and we’re excited for fans to get another taste of the elusive favorite for just a few days beginning March 31, while supplies last.
