Beyond Van Gogh Returns to Dayton

Immerse yourself in Van Gogh’s artwork like you’ve never seen it before. Beyond Van Gogh — a beautiful and moving art experience — returns to the Dayton Convention Center  Nov. 11 for a 2 month run.

The traveling exhibit featureS more than 300 of Van Gogh’s works including “The Starry Night”, “Sunflowers” and “Café Terrace at Night.”

Beyond Van Gogh is a new truly immersive experience. While other shows use virtual reality or still images, our show breaks barriers by incorporating both still and moving art. Masterpieces, now freed from frames, come alive, appear, and disappear, flow across multi-surfaces, the minutia of details titillating our heightened senses. The show is projected on every surface around you, this makes you feel as though you have stepped directly into a Van Gogh painting. We accompany the show with a beautiful score and include many other surprises!

“Through the use of cutting-edge projection technology and an original score, Beyond Van Gogh breathes new life into over 300 of Van Gogh’s artworks,” the website says.

Vincent Van Gogh’s Birthday Means Discounted Admission at DAI

The Dayton Art Institute’s (DAI) latest Focus Exhibition, Van Gogh & European Landscapes, offers the Dayton region a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a remarkable pair of Van Gogh paintings, on loan to the museum from Switzerland. The DAI-exclusive exhibition opened earlier this month and continues through September 4.

Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, and the DAI will celebrate the artist’s birthday with a special museum admission discount on March 30 & 31. Mention Van Gogh’s birthday at the museum’s Guest Services Desk on either day and get $5 off one regular adult admission. The museum is open 11 a.m.–5 p.m. on March 30 and 11 a.m.–8 p.m. on March 31.

Regular museum general admission is $15 adults; $10 seniors (60+), active military and groups (10 or more); $5 students (18+ w/ID) and youth (ages 7–17); and free for children (ages 6 & younger). Admission includes access to the exhibitions Van Gogh & European Landscapes, Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms and Fired Imagination: Ancient Chinese Ceramics from the Nancy and Ed Rosenthal Family Collection, as well as the museum collection galleries.

“It is a true joy to experience real paintings by Vincent van Gogh in person and to see why he is considered the world’s most famous artist,” said Jerry N. Smith, Chief Curator and Director of Education. “You can see the vibrancy, the rich color and thick brush strokes that highlight his late paintings. In addition, you get to see his paintings alongside the works of several of the artists Van Gogh personally admired.”

The paintings of Vincent van Gogh are beloved and instantly recognized the world over for their brilliant color and bold brushwork. Despite his untimely death at the age of thirty-seven, Van Gogh worked intensely until the very end. The pair of landscape paintings in this exhibition were made in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, in July 1890, the final month of Van Gogh’s life. They are vibrant images that feature his signature style of thick dashes of color and quickly applied swirls made with a loaded brush.

 

This intimate Focus Exhibition also includes works by Charles Francois Daubigny, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Joseph Mallord William Turner, John Constable and others.

LOVING VINCENT Opens Friday at THE NEON. Big Holiday Films On Horizon!

We’re moving forward this Friday with a film many of you have expressed great interest in seeing – LOVING VINCENT. This hand oil-painted film is absolutely stunning, but its engagement will be limited (we have 2 spectacular new films that need to open on Nov. 22). Hurry down – everything will have to leave (including FLORIDA PROJECT and GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN – click either title to visit that film’s official site) within the next couple weeks.

Synopsis for LOVING VINCENT: “The man was carrying nothing; his hands clasped to a fresh bullet wound leaking blood from his belly. This was Vincent van Gogh, then a little known artist; now the most famous artist in the world. His tragic death has long been known, what has remained a mystery is how and why he came to be shot. Loving Vincent tells that story.” LOVING VINCENT is told via animated oil paintings – all done by hand. On Wednesday, November 15 at 7:15, The Jewish Community Center of Greater Dayton will host a special screening of the classic Gary Cooper film HIGH NOON at THE NEON. Speaking with the film will be the Pulitzer Prize-winner Glenn Frankel, author of HIGH NOON: THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST AND THE MAKING OF AN AMERICAN CLASSIC. The Dayton Holiday Festival, Mix 107.7 and THE NEON will present the return of the much-loved FAMILY HOLIDAY FILM SERIES. This year, we’ll look at 3 holiday gems over the course of the first three Saturdays in December. Admission is free for children 12 and under, and general admission is just $2. On December 2 at Noon, we’ll watch PRANCER – a film about a little girl who finds one of Santa’s injured reindeer. On December 9 at Noon, we’ll watch the holiday classic – MIRACLE ON 34th STREET – starring a young Natalie Wood. On December 16 at Noon, we’ll wrap up the series with HOME ALONE – this classic starring Macaulay Culkin is already 27 years old! Tickets are first come, first serve – available 45 minutes before each screening.

We’ve got a really strong line-up over the next several weeks.  We are slated to open both LADY BIRD and THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI on November 22.  These 2 films are winning praise and Oscar buzz galore.  On December 22, we are slated to open THE SHAPE OF WATER (one of my absolute favorite films of the year with the incredible Sally Hawkins) and DARKEST HOUR.  Somewhere in between these dates, we hope to get to FACES PLACES (another of my favorites of the year – an absolutely charming, insightful and uplifting film) and possibly THE SQUARE.  Stay tuned!
