Arrive Safe Free Rides Return!

December 22, 2021 By Dayton937

Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. announced that the ArriveSafe program will be offered over the Christmas and New Years holiday weekends, thanks to continued support from Heidelberg Distributing/Budweiser and Key-Ads.

Prosecutor Heck said, “Law enforcement across the state are increasing patrols in an effort to reduce the dramatic increase in fatal traffic crashes. A combination of distracted drivers, drug and alcohol impaired drivers, and excessive speed have caused the state to experience more than 1,300 traffic fatalities this year, which is over 100 more than last year. Don’t become a statistic. Either have a sober designated driver or make a call to ArriveSafe. We will get you home safely.”

ArriveSafe returned over the Thanksgiving weekend, and 175 rides were given. The program now offers Uber rides, but works the same as in the past. The person requesting an ArriveSafe ride calls 937-449-9999 and gives the operator their name, a cellphone number, and their pick-up and drop-off locations. The operator will dispatch an Uber driver to get them home safely. The caller doesn’t need to have an Uber account or the Uber app on their phone – they will receive text messages with information about their Uber ride.

ArriveSafe will be offering free cab rides home for Montgomery County residents over Christmas from 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 24, 2021, through 6:00 a.m. Sunday, December 26, 2021, and again over New Years, from 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2021 through 6:00 a.m. Sunday, January 2, 2022.

DAI Announces Special Exhibitions For 2022

December 21, 2021 By Dayton937

As the new year approaches, the Dayton Art Institute (DAI) is excited to announce a diverse lineup of exhibitions for 2022, highlighted by the Special Exhibition Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms and the Focus Exhibition Van Gogh and European Landscapes, as well as several other DAI-exclusive exhibitions.

“The exhibitions for 2022 will be memorable and enjoyable,” said DAI Chief Curator & Director of Education, Jerry N. Smith. “We will introduce works by living artists from across the country, celebrate how conservation helps us preserve the many treasures within our outstanding collection and will feature one of the most intriguing photographers working today. We will also bring a pair of remarkable paintings by Vincent van Gogh to Dayton, along with a host of diverse offerings.”

2022 SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

The DAI will return to presenting three large Special Exhibitions in 2022.

The Special Exhibition season kicks off in February, with the DAI exclusive Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms, on view February 26–May 22. Presented in collaboration with Dayton’s own African American Visual Artists Guild, this juried exhibition will feature exceptional contemporary art by African American artists from across the United States. This will mark the seventh annual presentation of Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms and its first time being hosted at DAI. The exhibition’s Best in Show winner will be featured in a 2023 Focus Exhibition at the DAI.

A close look at how conservation protects artworks for future generations will be the subject of DAI’s summer exhibition, Art for the Ages: Conservation at DAI, on view June 25–September 11. Organized by the Dayton Art Institute, the museum will be the exclusive venue for this exhibition. Presenting rarely displayed works, as well as favorites seen in a new light, it includes examples from a variety of time periods, cultures and materials.

The 2022 Special Exhibition season concludes in the fall with American Myth and Memory: David Levinthal Photographs, on view October 15, 2022–January 15, 2023. This touring exhibition, organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, brings together highlights from Levinthal’s fascinating photographs of toys as a way to examine American stories.

2022 FOCUS EXHIBITIONS

The DAI’s Focus Exhibition lineup presents a series of smaller, intimate exhibitions, based around a variety of themes.

The 2022 Focus Exhibition season will be highlighted by the work of the world’s most famous artist, Vincent van Gogh. In Van Gogh and European Landscapes, on view March 5–September 4, a remarkable pair of Van Gogh paintings, on loan to the DAI, will be at the center of this look at European landscape painting.

Other planned Focus Exhibitions include:

Fired Imagination: Ancient Chinese Ceramics from the Nancy and Ed Rosenthal Family Collection, on view February 5–July 24, presents a private collection of ceramics, ranging from figures to vessels and spanning more than 3,000 years of Chinese history.

Mysteries abound in Something Unknown, on view March 12–June 5, a display of photographs and works on paper in which details about the work, such as the identity of the artist, the subject matter, the location, etc., are unknown to the museum. Maybe you can help the DAI solve a mystery!

Netsuke and the Art of Little Wonders, on view August 27, 2022–February 12, 2023, features netsuke, which are delicately carved personal accessories that depict subjects from popular culture–such as heroes, monsters and folk tales–in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868).

Additional Focus Exhibitions will be announced in the new year. For more information and updates about both Special and Focus Exhibitions at the DAI, go to www.daytonartinstitute.org/exhibitions.

“Our curatorial team has put together an outstanding selection of exhibitions for 2022,” said DAI Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “You won’t want to miss any of these, especially the rare opportunity to see the work of Vincent van Gogh here in Dayton. I encourage you to consider becoming a museum member, which gives you unlimited free admission to the museum, as well as many other benefits.”

Through the end of this year, the DAI is offering a special holiday membership discount–get 15% off the cost of select new and gift memberships through December 31, 2021. To take advantage of this offer, visit the DAI Guest Services Desk or call 937-223-4278 during regular museum hours, or purchase online at www.daytonartinstitute.org/membership using the discount code HOLIDAY2021 at checkout.

Be sure to also include a visit to the DAI in your holiday plans. Current exhibitions at the museum include Ralston Crawford: Air + Space + War, on view through January 23, Norman Rockwell: Stories of Emotion, on view through February 13, Formless Form V: The Calligraphy of Ronald Y. Nakasone andSpotlight on Africa: Gifts from Dianne Komminsk, both on view through January 2, Within Reach of All: Early Dayton Photography, on view through February 6, and Beyond the Woodblock, on view through March 6.

Straight No Chaser at The Schuster

December 20, 2021 By Dayton937

If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses… think again. STRAIGHT NO CHASER (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase and a long list of accomplishments including two RIAA Gold Certified albums, over 1.5 million concert tickets sold, over 1 billion streams on Pandora, and over 2 million albums sold worldwide. STRAIGHT NO CHASER is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense… and with a sense of humor.

World Class Film Production Space Coming to Dayton

December 15, 2021 By Dayton937

1913 Studios announces the purchase of 721 Springfield Street in Dayton, Ohio. The 210,000 square foot building will house three large production spaces, more than 60 offices and pre/post production support spaces that will support the next generation of cutting edge filming and media production. Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2022.

“1913 Studios is excited to make this commitment to Dayton,” Joey DiFranco, co-founder of 1913 Studios. “This city has incredible infrastructure and a talent pipeline in terms of technology, media production, and the arts. We are looking forward to building our company headquarters here.”

Over the past year, 1913 Studios has been in conversations with organizations such as the City of Dayton, Montgomery County, FilmDayton, the Dayton Development Coalition, JobsOhio, and others as they refined their vision for the space. The facility will be a vertically integrated production studio that includes development, production, and editing suites all under one roof.

“We’ve worked hard to cultivate Montgomery County into a business-friendly area, and we’re excited that 1913 Studios has chosen to build here,” said Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge. “This new, high-tech company is adding to our already diverse economy, and the content produced here will put the Dayton region on the map for media production.”

DiFranco and his 1913 Studios co-founder Seth Hummel both call the region home. DiFranco, a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, returned to Dayton in 2019. Hummel, who completed post graduate studies at MIT, is a Dayton native and lifelong resident who has started and grown a number of businesses in the region. “Dayton has a well known history of innovators who have created industry leading technologies. We plan to continue that tradition by cementing this city and 1913 Studios as the premier multimedia production center of the Midwest,” said Hummel.

“This project is such a creative way to breathe new life into a space,” said Maranda Camden, business development manager with Wilcon, the Dayton-based general contractor on the project. “The way 1913 Studios will creatively reuse this massive space underscores their commitment to Dayton. Wilcon is thrilled to be part of this long-term vision and energy that will be concentrated here.”

Rounding out the project team is the Dayton-based architecture firm MODA4.

“Dayton’s architecture and building stock provides so many development opportunities,” said Jamie Owens, Director of Business Development at MODA4. “Having spent years working on The Arcade, we can’t wait to dig into another large project that demonstrates what can happen when a building is creatively modified with aesthetics and technology befitting the 21st century.”

ABOUT 1913 STUDIOS: 1913 Studios will be home to a state-of-the-art production facility supporting technology, content development, gaming development, media production and the arts in Dayton, Ohio, a region that embraces opportunity and is supportive of rapid growth.

According to Dayton Regional Film Commissioner Lisa Grigsby, ” 1913 Studios are going to be a game changer for the film industry in Dayton.  Bringing new jobs, internship opportunities and National attention to the students of the Tom Hanks Motion Picture School at Wright State University, FilmDayton knows that the playing field in Dayton just got bigger and we are ready to take on the challenge.”

The Nutcracker Returns to the Schuster For 8 Performancrs

December 7, 2021 By Dayton937

On Friday, December 10 at 7:30 pm; Saturday, December 11at 2:30 and 7:30 pm; Sunday, December 12 at 2:30 pm; Friday, December 17 at 7:30 pm; Saturday, December 18 at 2:30 and 7:30 pm; Sunday, December 19 at 2:30 pm in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, the Dayton Ballet, accompanied by the full Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will present the holiday favorite The Nutcracker, the second ballet of the DPAA 2021-2022 season.

Dayton Ballet’s beloved The Nutcracker is Dayton’s biggest and best holiday performing arts tradition. With choreography by Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke, sets by designer Ray Zupp, and costumes by Lowell Mathwich, the story of little Clara, her prized Nutcracker, the Rat King, the handsome Cavalier, and, of course, the Sugar Plum Fairy comes alive on stage this December. The elegance, grace and sheer athleticism of the full company of Dayton Ballet dancers brings the magical story to immediate, colorful life.

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Neal Gittleman, again takes up residence in the orchestra pit, giving Tchaikovsky‘s music the full, rich, gorgeous interpretation that it requires. There is no better way to enjoy this classic ballet and experience the full depth of this wonderful music than at the Schuster Performing Arts Center, a world-class venue that stands as a jewel in the Gem City.

In addition, Dayton Ballet’s The Nutcracker involves a cast of 29 children from the Dayton area, representing the following communities:  Arcanum, Beavercreek, Bellbrook, Centerville, Dayton, Englewood, Enon, Franklin, Kettering, Oakwood, Springboro, Tipp City, Troy, West Carrollton, and Xenia. The following young dancers, including dancers from Dayton Ballet II Senior and Junior Companies, will appear this year on stage at the Schuster Center, alongside the 19 professional dancers from Dayton Ballet:

Before the performances and during intermissions, the Schuster Center Wintergarden bustles with the excitement of the holiday season. Find the perfect holiday gift at the Dayton Ballet Boutique, peer into the famous whimsical Rike’s window boxes, or treat yourself with candy and ice cream at the Graeter’s Sweet Shoppe.

Several events are planned to highlight the Dayton Ballet’s presentation of The Nutcracker as follows:

  • Behind the Ballet – After each performance, ticket holders are invited free of charge to “Behind the Ballet,” a Q&A with Ms. Burke and professional dancers from Dayton Ballet in the orchestra area of the theatre, giving audiences the opportunity to learn more about the life of a dancer at Dayton Ballet.

  • Nutcracker Boutique – The Dayton Ballet Nutcracker Boutique opens before each performance and during intermissions and features hundreds of holiday nutcrackers of all sizes, painted pointe shoes, and ballet-themed items for sale. The Boutique is a wonderful display of unique pieces to purchase as a way to remember your lovely visit to The Nutcracker or to give as the perfect holiday gift to a loved one.

  • Graeter’s Sweet Shoppe – To complete everyone’s visit to the Land of Sweets, Graeter’s Ice Cream will offer holiday goodies available for purchase at each performance.

  • Rike’s Holiday Windows in the Wintergarden – For those seeking a walk down memory lane, the former Rike’s Department Store animated holiday windows are on display in the Schuster Center Wintergarden once again this year. The Rike’s Windows are a holiday tradition for countless Dayton families since the elves first appeared in the windows of Rike’s Department Store in the 1940s.
