Dayton Battle of the Bands series kicks off at The Brightside

The Katawicks, the 2020 winners of Dayton Battle of the Bands
The 2nd annual Dayton Battle of the Bands series kicks off at The Brightside on Thursday, January 20, 2022. The six-week series seeks to highlight emerging, original musical talent in Dayton through a unique community collaboration between The Brightside, Sound Valley, Venus Child Productions, and Levitt Pavilion Dayton.
The series runs on Thursday evenings from 7-10pm at The Brightside (905 E 3rd St, Dayton) starting January 20th and running through February. Each Thursday evening features 4 bands performing 20 min sets. Each paying patron gets a ballot and one vote. There are also 3 local music industry judges voting too. Judges and audience votes are split 50/50 during the playoff rounds. The winner of each Thursday competition will move onto the finale, which is held on Saturday, February 26, 2022.
Dayton Battle of the Bands launched in January of 2020, ran 6 weeks, and concluded before the pandemic started. Organizers were unable to host the competition in 2021 due to the shutdown, so they are extra excited to be hosting this series once again.
One major thing that is different this time is that each finalist (6 total) will get an opening spot on Levitt Pavilion Dayton’s 2022 summer schedule! This is a major opportunity for all the bands. Each finalist will also receive a video of one song performed live during the finale from Sound Valley Dayton. The winner of the entire competition will earn studio time to record an EP, which was generously donated by Dayton Sound Studios.
“Despite ‘battle’ being in the name, this is actually a really friendly competition and a great way for bands to network with each other and get feedback from the judges,” Carli Dixon, owner of The Brightside, shared with us.

The Human Race Theatre Company Announces New Artistic Director
The Human Race Theatre Company Board of Trustees, the Artistic Director Search Committee and Executive Director, Kappy Kilburn, are pleased to announce the appointment of Emily N. Wells as The Human Race’s next Artistic Director. The Search Committee, comprised of artists, community leaders, Board members and Human Race staff voted unanimously to appoint Wells after a thorough nationwide search that began last summer.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are so excited that Emily N. Wells will be leading The Human Race as the next Artistic Director,” said Board Chair Jaresha Moore Smith. “Emily is an extraordinary artist, an advocate for inclusiveness and community engagement, and has a strong vision for The Human Race’s future while embracing the success of the past. We are excited to see the innovation, the artistry, and excellence she will bring to The Human Race both on stage and off.”
Emily N. Wells is an award-winning theatre director, creative producer and educator with over 25 years experience including a significant emphasis on new plays and musicals. Joining Human Race Theatre Company as the new Artistic Director realizes a dream come true for Emily, as the company’s mission echoes her own: to open the doors of art and creativity to all people through stories that reflect our shared humanity.
While a senior producer for Houston Grand Opera, Emily focused on community building through new work development of pieces with significance to the 3rd largest Metro in the US. Her role at HGO encompassed producing a vast scale of works, including the Telly Award-winning Star-cross’d opera web series. Emily will direct the 2023 HGO world premiere of Another City, a new opera that tells the true stories of un-housed Houstonians and those who aid them. She also served as guest director and adjunct faculty at Houston’s prestigious Rice University, and led several fundraising efforts for congenital heart disease.
Prior to living in Houston, Emily’s other directing credits include Gulfshore Playhouse, Circuit Playhouse, Theatreworks/USA among others. She holds an MFA in Directing from the University of Memphis, a BA in Theatre from Washington University in St. Louis, and is an SDC and AEA Member. In her early career, Emily stage managed on and off Broadway, regionally and on national tours -including a week for The Human Race’s production of Green Gables while in development in East Hampton during the summer of 2004.
Wells will join The Human Race staff remotely in January while she finishes some projects. After spending the last 5 ½ years in Houston, she looks forward to enjoying all four changing seasons in Dayton with her husband and daughter. She plans to be full-time by the beginning of March, when she and Kevin Moore, founding member and retiring Artistic Director, will spend time together making a seamless transition into the “next act” while finalizing the 2022-2023 Loft Theatre season.
Emily Wells will be the fourth Artistic Director in the company’s 35 years, following founding Artistic Director Suzy Bassani in 1986, who passed the torch to founding member Marsha Hanna in 1993. After Marsha’s untimely passing in 2011, founding Executive Director Kevin Moore became Artistic Director. Moore will officially leave the company in June, 2022.
The company is working on plans for several community introductions and engagement events with Emily and Kevin. Stay tuned.

Woodland Cemetery Foundation Announce Changes to Boards of Trustees
Woodland Cemetery and Woodland Arboretum Foundation announce that Tony Huffman has resigned from both boards, Robert Laing has resigned from the Arboretum Foundation board and Andy Lehman has joined both boards effective January 1, 2022. Vail Miller, Jr. has been named Chairman of the Cemetery and Arboretum Foundation boards, replacing Tony Huffman, who served as Chairman of both boards since 2019 and as a trustee since 2003.
My 18 years as a Trustee and President of the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, was an incredible experience and honor,” stated Tony Huffman. “During my tenure on the board, I developed not only a high appreciation for the history the cemetery tells of our community, but also the natural beauty of its arboretum. I am especially proud of the fact, that we developed a plan to restore the historic chapel and its priceless Tiffany windows and developed a fund-raising strategy to support this initiative and execute it. The historic chapel, administrative building and entrance gates are well on their way to completion by year’s end. I am pleased that Mr. Vail Miller, Jr. is following me as the new President of the Trustees. Vail’s commitment to our community speaks for itself and he will add his own creative and professional abilities to the future growth of Woodland.”

L to R: Lee Carpenter, Robert Laing, Vail Miller, Jr., Tony Huffman, Andy Lehman, Robert Berner and Sean O’Regan.
Newly appointed Chair Vail Miller Jr. stated, “As a Cemetery Trustee for over 19 years, Mr. Huffman has contributed his time and talent to the great benefit of Woodland and we can’t thank him enough for all that he has done and continues to do for this institution and the Dayton community. Mr. Laing’s 31 years of dedicated service to Woodland’s mission is remarkable, his input will be missed but his influence continues. I am pleased to have Andy Lehman join Woodland’s board. Andy is a tremendous leader who expands the knowledge, talent and commitment of our organization.”
Mr. Lehman joins the boards that oversee Woodland Cemetery’s and Woodland Arboretum’s finances, policies and procedures, strategic planning, and community outreach.
The staff and boards of Woodland Cemetery and Woodland Arboretum Foundation are happy to welcome Andy Lehman, Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President of Kettering Health. An active member of the community, Andy has proudly served on a number of boards. “Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is a beautiful historic landmark that has been the center of our community for over 180 years. I’m honored to serve and assist their legacy of success” said Mr. Lehman. Mr. Lehman will join, Vail Miller, Jr., Lee Carpenter, Robert Berner, and Sean O’Regan as Cemetery Trustees.
“It is a bitter-sweet moment in my tenure at Woodland to bid farewell to Tony Huffman and Robert Laing from the active board,” said Sean O’Regan, President and CEO of Woodland. “Their influence, trust and friendship will always be treasured and their lasting impact is very much appreciated. I am grateful to welcome Mr. Lehman. His leadership, values, along with his interest in the growth and lasting success of Woodland will be an asset to our dedicated board of trustees.”
Woodland Cemetery sits in the heart of downtown Dayton on over 200 verdant acres of rolling hills with over 3,000 trees on the property. This historic cemetery, founded in 1841, welcomes thousands of visitors who tour the grounds each year to visit the grave sites of inventors of powered flight, Wilbur and Orville Wright; poet Paul Laurence Dunbar; Gov. James M. Cox, founder of Cox Media and three-term governor of Ohio; writer Erma Bombeck; inventor Charles F. Kettering; and entrepreneurs John H. Patterson (NCR); George P. Huffman (Huffy Bicycles); and George Mead (Mead Paper Co.).
Woodland Arboretum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation currently involved in a capital campaign to raise funds for the restoration of the Cemetery’s Romanesque Chapel, Administration Building and Gateway, which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Explore Cartooning – 4 week class
This class is perfect for a cartoonist/comic book artist who has a project in some stage of development, or at least conception. We’ll work one-on-one to help crystalize your strip or graphic novel, get it going in the right direction, smooth off the rough edges, dismantle the brick walls, jump-start that which is stalled out.
Emphasis on storytelling via illustration. Sessions are kept small enough to maximize individual attention. Of course, guidance tailored to one project may be adapted and applied to others, so never underestimate the value of being in an environment with learners who are likewise motivated.
