Turkish Delights Return to the Stage with South Park Tavern Show

October 21, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

We haven’t heard much from the Turkish Delights since early this spring, but we’re very happy to report that the band is back in action with a show on Saturday at South Park Tavern.  The Turkish Delights will perform with the Smug Brothers, who are putting the final touching on their forthcoming EP, Treasure Virgins.  Cincinnati’s Minor Leagues will round out a great evening of music.  The music starts around 9pm, and this show, like most every show at South Park Tavern, is all ages.

Local Musicians Occupy Canal Street to Support Protests

October 20, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt 2 Comments

A Shade of Red (Photo by David Dotson)

Politics aside, Canal Street Tavern has a killer lineup this Friday night, and in a spirit that’s common in our local music scene, the bands have donated their time to play for a cause.  It’s suggested that the audience donate $5 or more at the door, and those funds will be donated to the Occupy Dayton movement (there will also be representatives from the movement in attendance if you want to learn more).  The music begins around 9:30pm.  Here’s the lineup:

Michael & Sandy Bashaw
Dan Raridan and the Calientes
A Shade of Red
The Professors

There are shows you plan to attend for months ahead of time.  And then there are the ones that sneak up on you last minute, causing you to drop everything to attend.  I’ve been spending the last few minutes rearranging my schedule for tomorrow night (and rearranging my Music Video Monday schedule) for what’s going to be a great show at South Park Tavern.  UK band, the Indelicates will be at SPT tomorrow night performing with locals Revampire. This is the Indelicates first US tour, so come out and give them a Dayton welcome.  As with all shows at South Park Tavern, the music starts around 9pm, and it’s all-ages.

Vandaveer, Sean Rowe and BJSR THURSDAY at South Park Tavern

September 27, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Vandaveer (Photo by Sarah Law)

Yesterday I told you about Marnie Stern performing at Blind Bob’s with the promise of another show featuring touring artists.  Well, here it is.  Thursday night you can catch DC’s Vandaveer at South Park Tavern along with Sean Rowe (also hailing from DC) and Dayton’s own BJSR.  Vandaveer is a songwriting project headed by Mark Charles Heidinger who’s been joined on vocals by several collaborators.  Heidinger has roots in Ohio and Kentucky that inform Vandaveer’s alt-folk tunes. Vandaveer released their latest album, Dig Down Deep, earlier this year.

Admission for this all-ages show is $7, and the music starts around 9pm.

Marnie Stern, R. Ring and Astro Fang TONIGHT

September 26, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Marnie Stern (Photo by David Torch)

I often hear from other music fans that they wish that more out of town/touring artists would perform in our fair city.  Well, there are 2 amazing shows this week featuring touring acts.  Tonight the amazing Marnie Stern will be performing at Blind Bob’s along with R. Ring (Kelley Deal of The Breeders, Mike Montgomery of Ampline) and Astro Fang. Stern has released several albums for Portland-based label Kill Rock Stars (home to Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith, Deerhoof and the early Decemberists’ albums among others), and combines a quick, sometimes chaotic guitar style with fantastic songwriting.  Check out the video below for a taste of what you’ll see tonight.

The show will get underway after 8pm and costs $8 at the door.

Check back to DaytonMostMetro.com later this week for info on another show featuring a touring artist.

In addition to being a fantastic blues guitarist, Noah Wotherspoon is also a very talented singer-songwriter.  Writing and performing under the name Noah and the Rescue Radio, Wotherspoon has been forging a different sound for himself, one I’m pretty fond of.  Check out this video created by Noah Wotherspoon & Jessi Bair.  If, like me, you’re a fan of the film The Science of Sleep, I think you’ll enjoy this one.

Urban Nights Street Jams in Front of Feathers

September 16, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Jay Madewell drumming in front of Feather's

Among the many cool things to check out during Urban Nights tonight, be sure to cruise by Feathers Vintage Clothing on 5th Street where Jay Madewell will present a street jam consisting of 7 different musical acts each backed by Madewell on the drums, an idea he got while hosting South Park Tavern’s Rock n’ Roll Play Date.

“For 8 months I provided a drumkit for others to use or I was available to sit in, my goal was to play 4-6 sets every Wednesday night to improve my drumming & help others w/their music,” says Madewell.  He then devoted Monday nights to music sessions with other players, to develop the music.  “I really enjoyed not having any idea what I was about to play at those open mics, yet I never felt as if I ‘fell on my face’ with any the songs.  It made me fearless as a drummer. I’ve met so many new friends through this experience. I like watching how people react to the various players’ songs; all of the performers are unique.”

Madewell says he’s considering starting a new Rock n’ Roll Play Date, something we’ll look forward to bringing you news of here on DaytonMostMetro.com.

Here’s the lineup for Friday night:

6:30 Ed Pittman (former Toxic Reasons vocalist!)
7:00 Scott J. Lee
7:30 Bucketmouth (Michael Todd Morrow)
8:00 Asides/Bsides (Aaron Altman & Bryan Beaupre),
8:30 E Ryan Roth
9:00 Brian Wells
9:30 Henrique Couto w/Joshua Egeland & Moriah Yux (of Jasper The Colossal!)

Southeast Engine and These United States TONIGHT at Canal Street

September 12, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt 12 Comments

Another Dayton Music Fest has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean more amazing shows aren’t right around the corner.  In fact, you don’t have to wait until the weekend to experience some great live music, Canal Street Tavern has you covered with an amazing Monday night show.  Athens-based (with some strong Dayton ties) Southeast Engine will playing performing this evening along with These United States (most recently based out of Washington DC).

Both bands have been gaining a lot of critical acclaim this year.  Southeast Engine was a World Cafe: Next artist earlier this year, and will be performing an NPR Mountain Stage show in Athens, Ohio in October along with the Jayhawks, Hot Tuna and many others.

The show starts at 9:30p (doors open at 8pm) and is a steal at $5.  Tod Weidner (Shrug, The Motel Beds will open) and there’s a rumor that Dayton’s new cupcake wagon may be parking near the club for those of you who, like me, enjoy baked goods with your rock and roll.

WSWO Holds Annual Record Sale

September 8, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

Vinyl junkies, start your engines!  This weekend promises to be full of good finds.  WSWO is holding their annual vinyl record sale.  It’s a chance to get your hands on some classic albums for a great price (everything is $4 or less).  It’s also a chance to support a great community radio station.

If you aren’t hip to WSWO, they’re a low power radio station broadcasting out of Huber Heights at 97.7FM and 101.1FM.  They’re a community station meaning that all of their DJs are volunteers and the station is considered a non-profit.  So purchases at the record sale do go back into helping the station with day to day operations (and trust me, running a radio station isn’t cheap).  But the best part is most certainly the music.  WSWO broadcasts “ultimate oldies” tunes from 50s, 60s and occasionally the early 70s.  They also play big band music on Saturdays and broadcast Wayne Warriors sports events.

The WSWO vinyl sale is Saturday, Sept 10 and Sunday, Sept 11, noon to 6pm at the Huber Center in Huber Heights (6182 Chambersburg. Rd.)

Kim Waters brings smooth jazz to Gilly’s

September 7, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Friday night marks the return of smooth jazz saxophone player Kim Waters to the Miami Valley.  Waters and his band combine jazz, R&B and soul with original compositions and new interpretations of classic songs.  Kim Waters will perform two shows on Friday, September 9th at Gilly’s in downtown Dayton at 7 and 10pm.  There are still some tickets available for each show at the following locations: Omega Music, The Record Gallery (both in the Oregon District), Half Priced Books and Huber Music and Video.  Tickets may also be available at the door (depending on advanced sales).
