A wise man once said, “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change” and that’s one thing that those of us at the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC  has come to know, understand, adapt to, and appreciate!  After all without change things become boring, stagnant, and let’s face it predictable–all things that Fashion should never become!  So with that being said, the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC is excited to announce changes to our schedule of events for May!! 😀

 Originally it was announced that we would be having our very first Fashion Week May 6-10, however after revisiting our ultimate goal and mission which is to provide support for area and independent designers and then reviewing our own availability from Models (most of whom are in school age and or in college during the week), our very own staff (all of which have day jobs and faced a few scheduling issues), a few participating designers(who were only available during the weekend), and of course one of our main events conflicted with one of the largest events in Downtown—URBAN NIGHTS!!  So after careful thought and consideration, it was decided that “(DE-FI)ance Fashion Week” should be consolidated into a weekend event and hence “A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance” was born!!

So without further ado, we are proud to announce the schedule for (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week which will kick off during the largest street party in Dayton—URBAN NIGHTS!!

Event Description:  Kicking off on Friday May 9th at Urban Nights, “A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance” will be hitting the streets with our Fashion Police who will be patrolling the grounds looking for suspects to participate in our Ambush Makeovers!  Sponsored by Beaute Box, (DE-FI) Designers, Shuttereye Photography, PTB Photography, and Salon J Ladner participants will undergo a head to know makeover complete with a full photoshoot that will we be featured in the December issue of (DE-FI)ance Magazine! We will also, have a street team on location looking for some of the most stylish Daytonians who are styled to perfection and making a Fashion Statement to be featured on our Facebook and Twitter pages!!  But the fun doesn’t stop there, attendees  of Urban Nights will also get a firsthand look at all of the behind the scenes madness that takes place during Fashion Events like Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, with hair, makeup, and a full runway production taking place right in the middle of the streets of Downtown Dayton!!

Event Description: With Mother’s Day on May 11, we will kick off the Mother’s Day Celebration with our Stylish Mom Runway Show!! Complete with a continental breakfast, our Stylish Mom Runway show will pair two of the Midwest’s most well-known Wardrobe Stylist Jennifer Link of Dayton and Sheree Alexis of Columbus  who will be putting together looks from American Pi Dayton, Zig Zag Gallery, Ruby Ribbon, Izzi Bags, and (DE-FI) Kids Line Designer Sonya Mills of Kerapa Kids!!  But unlike our other fashion events, we aren’t using models…we’re using some of Dayton and the Miami Valley’s most deserving and inspirational Moms to rip our runway!!  The top looks will be featured in the December 2014 Issue of (DE-FI)ance Magazine and of course we will be using the Moms once again as the models along with their children.

Kettering Cultural Arts Manager Picks Her Top Moments in Dayton Visual Arts 2013

A collaborative project between artist Leesa Haapapuro and the Young People’s Homeschoolers program at K12 Gallery culminated into a short show at the Dayton Visual Arts Center. The young circus performers next to their murals, sculptures and paintings, created an incredible new world of possibility and magic for youth and adults.

Nam June Paik and Jud Yalkut, Beatles Electroniques, 1969

One of Dayton’s most treasured artists, Jud Yalkut was revered for his advocacy of the arts, his pioneer video works, his collages and his writing.  The exhibition captured many of his artworks, including special screenings of his film and video works, many of which hadn’t been seen by the public in decades.  Jud passed away in July 2013, marking an end of an era and a huge loss to the Dayton arts community.  Learn more about the his timely retrospective and career here.

As evidence of Dayton’s vitality, a special project launched in January captures the city’s pulse. Local radio station WYSO 91.3 and filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar teamed-up to create the multi-platform media project Reinvention Stories, a series of audio stories and short films of Dayton and its residents. The project, instigated by WYSO’s general manager Neenah Ellis, is based on a series of questions: how does a city of inventors reinvent itself? How are individuals reinventing themselves? How are people dealing with the economic turmoil of recent years? How is Dayton doing? Through this documentation, a collection of videos and photographs were selected by Eva Buttacavoli, Executive Director of the Dayton Visual Arts Centre, and partnership with the Dayton Visual Arts Center and WYSO 91.3. Inside Out 11M is a project based on Jr’s Inside Out with a focus on the question of immigration. Focusing on the residents of Dayton, the project captured portraits of hundreds of kids, adults and seniors. HWD, or Height x Width x Depth, featured dozens of artists working in three-dimensional form. Exploring the boundaries between drawing and sculpture, Park’s chainlink fence and plexiglass transformed the Stein galleries into a moving experience.  Originally commissioned by Rice University, Park’s beautiful installation has been traveling to galleries around the country.

The Yellow Springs Arts Council launched its first symposium in October, focusing on the process of lost-wax bronze casting.  Commissioning four sculptors, including D’jean Jawrunner (New Mexico), Susan Byrnes (Cincinnati), Brian Maughan (Yellow Springs), and John Weidman (New Hampshire), the artists created works on site for two-weeks, culminating in a live pour of their molds.  Exhibitions, lectures and artist talks complemented the artmaking daily.  More info is here.

A stunning collection of medieval alabaster sculptures, on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum, demonstrate the dramatic, narrative and intricate scenes interpreted from biblical texts.  An art form popular in the 15th and 16th centuries, alabasters were considered a low-end of medieval craft for centuries. Over 40 examples at the Dayton Art Institute show the merit of this art form, which finally gained recognition by scholars and collectors in the twentieth century.

James Pate and DECA students collaborative drawing

Art Street presented a complicated, difficult and important question within the multi-faceted collaborative art installation with artist James Pate, Dayton Early College Academy, South Chicago Art Center and Newtown, CT artists. Focused on creating a dialogue on issues of gun violence with a focus on South Chicago, Newtown and Dayton, panel discussions were a major component to the gallery exhibition. Artworks included New York artist S.B. Woods’ Meditation on Mourning, paintings made by Sandy Hook shooting survivors, Dayton-based artist James Pate and a group of DECA high school students. From the website: “This piece was conceived in part by James Pate, and in part by the students. After a conversation about gun violence, the students came to the consensus that ‘we as a society pull the trigger.’” Chicago artist Sarah Ward and students from the South Chicago Art Center created etchings of bullets to symbolize one for every person affected by gun violence on a daily basis. Dayton’s Day of the Dead parade and celebration took place on Friday, November 1, from the Oregon District to the historic St. Anne’s Hill neighborhood.  Hundreds of folks participated, many donning costumes and painted faces as music, art and food commemorated our loved ones. Stivers School for the Arts students, professional and emerging musicians and artists contributed to the celebration.  Spearheaded by volunteers, including Jean Howat Berry, MB Hopkins, Tonia Fish, Lisa Grigsby, and several others, the event found support from the community in its crowdsourcing fundraiser, as well as Welcome Dayton’s sponsoring of the parade, and Missing Peace Art Space and the Unitarian Fellowship for World Peace hosting.

535741_355776941219109_178054346_nWell, it’s been a while since you’ve heard from us last, most of it has been by design because we are serious about what we are doing and are quality focused and we want to be under the radar while we are still laying our foundation.  The last time I wrote a blog, we were in the midst of planning our “Fashion in the Mystic Garden” Launch Party and the debut of our Fashion and Lifestyle Magazine (DE-FI)ance which can be purchased at http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/606271?__r=435971!  With over 250 people in attendance, 70 models, 10 designers, a Native American drum group Chaske Hotain, the Soul fire Tribe, and the majestic settings of SunWatch Indian Village we let the world know that Dayton is here and we are weaving our pattern into the fabric of the Fashion Industry!!

With that being said, we are ready to give you a sneak peek into the future of (DE-FI), starting with our September 15, 2013 Casting Call taking place at the Shuttereye Studio located in the Entrepreneur Building at 714 E. Monument Ave., in downtown Dayton from 2p-4p!  We are in the need of about 20-30 additional models to add to our current roster of 60+ models.  This Casting Call will be open to both males and females age 4 and up, however we are putting additional emphasisevents on male models. (NOTE: ALL MODELS MUST BRING WITH THEM AN APPLICATION THAT CAN BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE AT http://www.daytonemergingfashionincubator.com starting on Sept.1, 2013).  Models in attendance at this Casting Call will know the day of if they have been selected for a callback and should plan to stay for a model meeting taking place after the Casting Call at 5pm.

One of our long term goals was to open up an actual store front location via the Activated Spaces program in 2014—well, things have been moving along rather rapidly for us and we are excited to announce that on Friday September 20th  during Urban Nights, the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC will be officially opening the doors to a custom clothing design boutique featuring the designers that were showcased during our July 13th Launch Party at SunWatch and other independent designers from across the country!!  If you weren’t able to attend our Launch Party and you have no idea the level of talent and creativity that was showcased, please visit our Facebook page and check out our albums at http://www.facebook.com/daytonemergingfashionincubator.

While we ARE NOT going through the Activated Spaces program for the boutique, this will be a 3 month trial intended to help us get our feet wet in the retail industry!! We are looking for  additional designers, seamstresses, and those willing to learn to sew via our partners at Sew Dayton to help the designers produce their lines for us to sell in the boutique, interested individuals should email us at info@daytonemergingfashionincubator.com.  We are taking over the old American Pi location located in the St. Clair Lofts on St. Clair St., in downtown Dayton and we can’t wait to help these designers grow their brands! (NOTE: As of 8-28-13 we will not be opening our storefront in the St.Clair Lofts).

Mark your calendars for December 31st for an event that you won’t want to miss!!  We are going to be taking flight into the New Year with our “First Flight…Now Fashion” Couture Ball taking place at Commander Aero!  “First Flight…Now Fashion” promises to bring a fashion experience that will capture the world’s attention and have everyone talking!  More details coming soon!!

Dayton Sideshow 8: The Art and Music Lovers Weekend Celebration Welcomes Another Year

The definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.  A person’s imagination can come to life in a variety of different styles.  A single swipe of paint onto a canvas could be the start of an elegant painting.  A photographer snaps a picture of a moment in time.  A block of clay is the start of amazing, with the finished product being able to have unlimited possibilities in the end.  Art is everywhere around us, whatever or realize it or not.  Every year around this time, Dayton’s artists have a two day event that gives them the platform to present their work to the public.  The event is the 8th annual Dayton Sideshow.

The Sideshow began with the idea from Laurana Wong.  Wong had a vision to organize an evening that brought people together to celebrate the local art being made and the artists that created it.  The show as free for the participants to submit their work, the organizers that would set it up, and for the guests that appeared.  Wong believed that by having this show take place, it would bring attention to the arts and give everyone a chance to connect to their similar interest.

The event took place on June 24th, 2006 at what is now the Cannery.  60 artists from all around the area had work showcased throughout the evening.  Everyone that attended and also volunteered loved what the night brought everyone, except one thing:  the heat.  “It was horrible (laughter)”, Vice-Chairperson for Dayton Circus Creative Collective Erin Vasconcelos mentioned to me.  Vasconcelos was one of the many individuals that helped with the show.  “There was no air, so it just made the room feel horrible.  It didn’t care, though.  We all had an amazing night.”

With the first show being a huge success, the organizers and volunteers continued to make the Sideshow a staple in the Dayton community.  With each year passing, the show remained staying true to its core principals-give the local artists in town the spotlight.  And with every year, the show has become larger and better than the previous one.  The show has in the past few years found a home that can be able to have the space that can hold the massive show-the Yellow Cab Building.  The show has also found the perfect time to hold their event-the weekend of the spring Urban Nights.

Sideshow organizer and current Dayton Circus Creative Collective Chairman Jeff Opt also enlisted live music to the event each year.  “Music is a form of art.  We are lucky to have a great music scene, and it deserves to be celebrated”, Opt says.  Due to the fact that the show is now placed at the Yellow Cab, the show can showcase up to 40 bands with having two stages.

This year’s showcase will be drawing attention to well over 60 local visual artists, and over 20 local music acts. Some of the work that folks will expect will absolutely give people more reason to fall in love with the work being done in town.  They will be live interactions of many of the artists finished products that will give the people that attend an experience they thought that they would have never expected.  Also something new this year came from the minds of a younger generation.  Two young children noticed that something was missing from this year’s event and it felt like it needed to be added.  “There will be a section for kids!”, Vasconcelos said.  The developers of this idea-the children of Opt and Vasconcelos.  In the area for children, there will be photos of artwork and a chance for the youth to make some of their own.

For people who don’t have the chance to help out with the Sideshow, there’s many ways to contribute.  One thing that the committee is doing this year is by setting up a donation section on the fundraising website, Indiegogo.com.  For the next couple of days, everyone is able to give to the show.  By donating certain amounts, donators will be given perks, including photography sessions from photographers Gary Mitchell or Jennifer Clarke.  To donate, click here.

This weekend will once again be shining bright on the town by putting the focus on the Sideshow.  The mind-blowing experiences you will have by seeing the marvelous work of the artists will leave you glad you came.  If that doesn’t do it, stay for the music from great bands like Smug Brothers, Nasty Bingo, Tim Pritchard & The Boxcar Suite, WolfCryer among others.  Dayton Sideshow is a staple of the community.  It’s a weekend where art truly does come alive.  Come see for youself.

Experience the Best of Downtown at Urban Nights

More than 100 downtown venues are offering special events, discounts and more for the May 10 Urban Nights.

Urban Nights is getting an updated flavor and feel. Entertainment now will focus on three “hotspots” located throughout downtown, allowing visitors to experience downtown’s biggest street party in a new way by visiting hubs of activity throughout downtown. The next Urban Nights will be held 5 to 10 p.m. this Friday, May 10, in downtown Dayton, the Oregon District and Wright-Dunbar Business Village. A list of the hotspots at the spring event is below.

“We celebrated the 10th anniversary of Urban Nights last year and felt it was a good time to re-evaluate the event,” said Sandy Gudorf, president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership, which presents Urban Nights. “It’s clear the event has been extremely successful, as it brings more than 30,000 people to our downtown, many business owners report record sales, and we continue to receive a great deal of positive feedback from the community about Urban Nights.

“Still, we wanted to make sure Urban Nights more effectively meets its overall goal: to showcase all downtown has to offer and the places that only can be experienced in downtown Dayton,” Gudorf added. “We believe this new plan will encourage people to visit more places downtown during Urban Nights while giving us the opportunity to better highlight different areas in our center city.”

More than 30,000 people come downtown to experience this free event, when more than 100 establishments showcase downtown’s dining, nightlife, art, music, retail and housing options. The best way to see as much as possible during Urban Nights is to walk, and many of the destinations are just a short distance from each other. Greater Dayton RTA also will provide free event busses to help visitors get around.

Tours and Exhibits Commemorating the Great Dayton Flood of 1913

Get around Urban Nights while learning about our city’s largest natural disaster. Narrators on specially marked Flood Tour buses will detail factors that led to the catastrophe and recount survivors’ personal stories and those of heroic Daytonians from 100 years ago. The free 30- to 45-minute tour will follow the Urban Nights blue bus route and will stop at various locations throughout downtown Dayton. The tour officially begins at the corner of Monument Avenue and Jefferson Street, but visitors can get on and off the bus at any of the designated stops.

At its historical administrative building, the MCD will feature pocket park clean water tours and display 1913 flood inundation maps. The MCD also will host open-mic story telling about the flood along with other displays and giveaways.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Dayton Chapter has organized a self-guided tour for those intrigued by the architecture of Dayton and the history behind it. Refer to the Architectural Week brochure (distributed with Urban Nights program books) for more details or start at any of the buildings that are on the tour, where more information also will be available. The tour highlights the exterior architectural features of buildings, and not all buildings will be open to tour the interiors.

The Dayton Circus Creative Collective again will kick off its two-day celebration of music and art in Dayton during Urban Nights. This event showcases the work of more than 60 artists and more than 20 musicians, and it hosts an event after-party until 1 a.m. Food and refreshments available. Urban Bikes @ Urban Nights 

Start at Courthouse Square, Third and Main streets, at 6 p.m.

Get a preview of Urban Nights from the seat of your bike. Join hundreds of cyclists on this police-escorted ride through downtown. Riders are encouraged to wear a helmet and should be able to ride at a decent pace. This is not a ride for young children on their own bikes. From 5 to 8 p.m. on the Square, GetUP Montgomery County will present an event with live music, fitness demonstrations and other interactive activities focused on active, healthy lifestyles.

Cityfolk presents an exhibit that includes entries from a recent Cityfolk photo contest and work by artist Glenna Jennings, who will present her project “Looking at Looking.” Her photographs depict residents and visitors to downtown Dayton observing historic images from the National Cash Register archive.

Steamroller Printmaking: Flat-Out Fun!

Printmakers from the Dayton Printmakers Cooperative and students from Stivers School for the Arts will print large-scale linoleum blocks using a real steamroller as a printing press. Anyone can carve a smaller version of the linoleum blocks prior to the event (available for purchase at the Dayton Visual  Arts Center for $10), called “Parking Prints,” and have it printed the night of the event. At DVAC, 118 N. Jefferson St., view large-scale and parking prints from the previous two Steamroller events.

Light My Fire & Brilliant Trash Competition

More than 100 hand-crafted mosaic lanterns will be lit in front of and inside the gallery as part of the Light My Fire exhibit. The lanterns will be for sale, with proceeds benefitting programming at K12 and TEJAS. K12 also will host the Brilliant Trash Competition, featuring upcycled works of art by local artists vying to be named Craft Master 2013, along with the exhibition “Can I Get a Witness?,” featuring abstract paintings by Rebecca Sargent and Erika Hess. Enjoy light refreshments, music and salsa dancing.

Friday Sept 14th, 2012 was a great evening in Downtown Dayton.  The Urban Nights event showcased dining, nightlife, retail shops and more.  Good art and good music filled the city, as did festival goers.  But The Food Adventures Crew were at this huge street party to try the street food for an Urban Food Adventure.  It was great to see the bustling downtown area with businesses and restaurants opening their doors to the public.  Dancers and musicians entertained the masses and there were even people repelling down one of Dayton’s tallest buildings!

Crowds gathered from Riverscape to the Oregon District.  Dayton was hopping during Urban Nights.  There were dozens and dozens of restaurants and food vendors selling their eats.  So many vendors, that it would be impossible to list them all here, so please click on our photos below.  A picture is worth a thousand words, right?

There was soul food and seafood.  There were pies and burgers ‘n fries.  Varieties ranges from Bratwurst eats to vegetarian treats.  We ate South American food, Italian food and Indian specialties.  The event also featured beer and wine vendors.  Some vendors, like the ones near Riverscape, made you purchase 3 dollar tickets to buy food at any vendor.  Other street vendors downtown were on a cash for food basis.

There were even 3 separate stages spread out across the downtown area where you could listen to live bands and more.  We dined to some classic rock by local band ‘Spungewurthy.’

Did you miss Urban Nights and the food extravaganza?  Then mark your calendars for Friday night May 10th, 2013 when Urban Nights returns to the Gem City.

The atmosphere was friendly and fun.  It was really something to enjoy a Food Adventure while standing among Courthouse Square or underneath Dayton’s skyline.   Urban Nights was a great time and made us proud of our hometown of Dayton!  Enough of the sentimental stuff, you have to check out these amazing food photos below !!

Urban Nights, Downtown’s Biggest Street Party, Returns This Friday

Fall Urban Nights will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 14, in downtown Dayton, the Oregon Arts District and Wright-Dunbar Business Village. An estimated 30,000 people attend Urban Nights, which is held in downtown Dayton, the Oregon Arts District and Wright-Dunbar Business Village, and there are more than 100 activities planned during the event — including live music on outdoor stages, art exhibit openings, tours of downtown housing, discounts at restaurants and retail shops, and much more. A full list of events is available online. Highlights include:

• Dancing in the Street: First Street will be closed between Ludlow and Main streets to make way for performances by DCDC, the South Dayton Dance Theater, Funk Lab, SMAG Dance Collective, ZumbAtomic and the McGovern Ceili Dancers.

• I Am City Folk: Cityfolk will launch this year-long project that is part of its Culture Builds Community initiative. It will feature mosaics, compiled by local photographer Andy Snow using photos of Daytonians taken by Nicole Christian, on display throughout downtown. • Dayton, Ohio! You Are Here! This large-scale performance piece will transform the Old Courthouse on Third and Main streets into a work of art through video projection and architectural lighting on the building’s exterior, as well as visual art and performances of dance, music and spoken word inside the historical building. • Over the Edge: Returning to the fall Urban Nights will be this challenge that combines fundraising with adventure. Participants who raise at least $1,000 will rappel over the side of the 27-story KeyBank Tower, which visitors can watch from Courthouse Square. All proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley. For more information, contact Matt McDowell at 937-220-6855.

•Taste of the Miami Valley: This weekend-long event will kick off during Urban Nights at RiverScape MetroPark. Guests can sample food from more than 30 area restaurants. Admission is free, and most tastes are $3 each.

• Downtown in Focus: Winning entries from this annual amateur and professional photography contest will be on display in the PNC Center lobby.

• Business grand openings: Three new downtown businesses will host grand openings during Urban Nights: OinkADoodleMoo in the lobby of the KeyBank Tower, 10 W. Second St.; Brim, a new hat shop at 464 E. Fifth St.; LIVV Interior Designs, a home and office interior design firm at 520 E. Third St. in the Cannery; and Sew Dayton, featuring fabric and patterns, at 16 Brown St.

• Urban Bikes @ Urban Nights: Cyclists will gather at 5:15 p.m. at Don Crawford Plaza in front of Fifth Third Field for, a community ride through the Urban Nights action hosted by Bike Miami Valley and ending at Courthouse Square. While the ride will be in parade fashion with a police escort, it is not appropriate for small children on their own bikes.

This is just a small sampling of the many activities that will be part of the Sept. 14 Urban Nights. The event also includes live music on five outdoor stages, art exhibit openings at galleries and other creative spaces, discounts and specials at downtown restaurants and retail shops, a chalk walk, roaming entertainers, and more. In addition, Greater Dayton RTA will provide free event buses to help visitors get around; bus routes are included in the event map.

Welcome to our new column for urban volunteer opportunities! I’ll be posting all kinds of ways to get involved in city neighborhoods – from hand-on service to crowdfunding to fun community-building events – so if you have items for submission e-mail me or add them to our Facebook group!

Spotlight on: Garden Station

Have you driven on Wayne Avenue downtown and wondered what that raucous splash of color was by the railroad tracks? Or maybe you’re a regular at the many frequent events occurring at this two-acre community art park, such as the weekly Sunday Market or ‘Free Music First Friday.’ Launched in 2008 as an initiative of the Dayton Circus Creative Collective, Garden Station is now a stand-alone organization led by Lisa Helm with a small crew of volunteers. It is an “urban hub where the Dayton community can come together to enjoy art, campfires, festivals, movies, concerts and community gardens.” They always need help on Saturday work days throughout the growing season, and this week, they are holding Wine and Weeding Wednesday to get spruced up for Urban Nights. The garden’s current fiscal sponsorship agreement expires on September 14 and its estimated monthly costs are $300, so they’d love if you made a tax-deductible donation before Friday! Or if you don’t fancy yourself a philanthropist, you can still give by eating at Blind Bob’s on the first Monday of the month and mentioning Garden Station Night.   • Guide our county’s future: Montgomery County is asking citizens to give input through a series of public forums. The topic for Tuesday, Sep. 11th is “Where Do We Stand vs. Other Communities?” Seen any great ideas in other areas that you’d like to bring back here? Chime in!
  • Show your art on downtown streets: Activated Spaces, the Downtown Dayton Plan’s joint project of Generation Dayton and updayton, is conducting a final call for submissions for art to fill downtown storefronts. Artists will appreciate that they’re printing the art on vinyl window clings this time, making installation much easier! Click here for more information and to apply by the September 14th deadline.
  • The November library levy (Issue 70) includes an “upgraded main library that will be a regional information, reading and cultural attraction for downtown Dayton.” Their online volunteer form asks for help with phonecalls, going door-to-door, endorsers, poll greeters, and public speakers.
  • Bike sharing for downtown was recently a hot topic of discussion in our group, and we learned that Bike Miami Valley is exploring the idea. Fill out their brief online survey to share your thoughts on a ‘smart bike’ system!
  • Which urban neighborhoods are on Facebook? Several years ago, DMM publisher Bill Pote and I led a training at City Hall to get more neighborhoods on social media. Let us know how far we’ve come by adding to my running list.

  • Clean up North Main Street: Volunteer help is needed for cleaning up litter and overgrown vegetation; supplies such as gloves, brooms and bags are provided. Saturday, Sep. 15, 8:30am-1pm, 2141 N.   • Demo Day at the Fifth Street Brewpub: Meet at the community-owned brewpub (1600 E Fifth) at 10 am, Saturday, Sep 15 to demo the interior of the brewhouse. Email them if you can make it so they can plan accordingly (e.g: buy enough beer)
  • Community-Police Action Planning: Learn about community-police relations, give feedback, and sign up for volunteer opportunities at the Dayton Community Police Council’s Community Day Party. Saturday, Sep. 15 11am-3pm, Convention Center.
  • Help make peace in Dayton neighborhoods: The Dayton Mediation Center is looking for volunteer mediators to attend upcoming trainings and commit to helping with conflict resolution. More details can be found here.

  • Adding color to Xenia Avenue: Over 170 volunteers participated in the year-and-a-half long mosaic mural project led by K12 Gallery for Young People in partnership with East End Community Services Corporation. The finished project can now be seen at 504 Xenia Ave. Like K12’s page to get involved in future projects! The new mosaics decorate the facade of the future location of the Corner Cupboard Charities thrift store, a volunteer-run organization that raises money for other local nonprofits. Check them out!

  • DDR volunteers rocked it!: Over 200 volunteers came out to support the Downtown Dayton Revival Music Fest this past weekend and a good time was had by all.
  • Invest in the city through real estate! Theresa Gasper of Full Circle Development, LLC recently shared some amazing before-and-after pictures of the homes she and partners have transformed in the Historic South Park neighborhood, an area which saw a 23% value increase in the last reappraisal. There are plenty of great urban realtors who would love to get you started!
  • First Friday Park Planters: A dozen volunteers organized through our Facebook group planted about 40 shrubs and perennials at a little downtown park on Friday night before exploring First Friday together. This was made possible by a grant that volunteer Brian Ressler obtained from Keep Montgomery County Beautiful. Thanks everyone!

 

Explore a Block Party & Urban Nights Previews During September First Friday

Downtown’s next free First Friday art hop will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7.

The United Way of the Greater Dayton Area will host the Live United Block Party in the Oregon District from 4 to 7 p.m., when 19 partner agencies of the organization will set up booths along Fifth Street, including Goodwill, a Special Wish Foundation, the Girl Scouts and Catholic Social Services. Guests who visit more than 10 of the booths will be entered into a raffle to win several prizes, including a diamond tennis bracelet and a pair of tickets to a Cincinnati Bengals football game. Select restaurants, including Blind Bob’s, Dublin Pub, Oregon Express, Coco’s Bistro and Trolley Stop, will donate a portion of proceeds during

the event to the United Way. Look for Heater, the Dayton Dragons’ mascot, wearing a Live United T-shirt during the block party from 5 to 6 p.m. The United Way of the Greater Dayton Area supports local health and human service programs provided by more than 70 partner agencies in Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties.

Sew Dayton, the newest Pop-Up Shop in the Activated Spaces initiative to fill vacant downtown storefronts, will host its soft opening during First Friday at its new home in the Color of Energy Gallery, 16 Brown St. The shop, owned by two Dayton seamstresses, will sell a variety of fabric and patterns, bags, and accessories, in addition to offering sewing classes. Sew Dayton be open until 9 p.m.

Blue Sky Project, CADC, Gallery 510 Fine Art, Grass Roots Enrichment and Wellness Center, K12 Gallery for Young People/TEJAS and the Yellow Cab Building will debut new works of art during First Friday. The Ghosts, Cemeteries and Murders Walk of Downtown Dayton will begin at 7 p.m. at Courthouse Square; contact tour guide Leon Bey at 274-4749 or email grantsguru501c3@yahoo.com for a reservation. The Loft Theatre will host the opening night of “Managing Maxine,” a new comedy, at 8 p.m. More than a dozen restaurants and bars will offer dinner and drink specials, and several retail stores will host sales and other special events.

During First Friday, fire dancers from the Soul Fire Tribe and folk musicians Todd the Fox also will provide entertainment while roaming the streets of downtown.

First Friday is presented by the Downtown Dayton Partnership with support from the Oregon District Business Association, the Ohio Arts Council and WYSO-FM 91.3. Amateur and Professional Photographers – Bring Your Cameras Downtown!

Amateur and professional photographers are invited to participate in Downtown in Focus, a photo contest aimed at finding new and distinctive shots of our downtown. The City of Dayton, Downtown Dayton Partnership, Kaplan College and Dayton Daily News are sponsoring the contest.

"Epcot, Dayton (RTA Hub)" by Robin Feld won 2011's professional "My Downtown Favorite" and "Best in Show" categories.

One amateur winner and one professional winner will be selected in each of the following categories:

  • Downtown Festivals: Images showcasing individuals or unique moments at any of downtown Dayton’s summer events or festivals.
  • Active Downtown: Photographs featuring people participating in active lifestyle activities, such as biking, kayaking, dancing and running in downtown Dayton.
  • Scenic Downtown: Creative images featuring buildings, architecture, skylines, parks, the river or any other picturesque view of downtown.
  • Best in Show (selected by the judges)

Terry Orf's "To Be Young Again" won last year's "My Downtown Favorite" and "Best in Show" in the amateur category.

A panel of judges ― consisting of professional photographers, photography editors and instructors, and community leaders ― will select the winners in each category and award a $250 cash prize to the Best in Show winner in each division. Honorable mentions also will be awarded at the discretion of the judges. In addition, City of Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzell will select one photo that best represents the City’s “Dayton Originals” motto. This photographer will receive a gift basket from the City of Dayton.

Contest winners will be recognized at the Sept. 14 Urban Nights, and all entries will be displayed in a special exhibit during Urban Nights.

From approximately 8 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, during First Friday, many of downtown’s buildings will be lit for photographers who would like to capture night shots of the city.

The deadline to submit photos is 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2012. There is no fee for application or participation. Photographers are not required to be Dayton-area residents, but winners must be age 18 or older. Photos must have been taken in Greater Downtown ― which includes the Central Business District, Oregon Arts District, Webster Station and the ring of neighborhoods that surrounds downtown ― within the past calendar year. A Music Review of Dayton’s Urban Nights Event

This past Friday night, Dayton hosted the annual Urban Nights.  Urban Nights is an event that twice a year (one time in the spring, and one time in the fall) Dayton highlights downtown with music, art, dining, retail, and urban living.  More than 100 places were showcased during the evening.  As being a music junkie, I had to go around and see all the local music that was filling the Dayton skies.

I brought a couple of friends of mine, and we decided to start at the Main Stage on Courthouse Square.  There, we saw that HeyThere Morgan was beginning to start their set.  HeyThere Morgan is a three-piece band that played cover songs from classic rock to modern hits.  Some cover bands don’t do the justice and respect that the originals are destined to have.  Some cover bands try too hard to spin it to make the songs their own.  By doing that, the cover band becomes a band that loses its flare.  HeyThere Morgan wasn’t one of those cover bands.  They smoothly transitioned between each song.  The band claims to be able to tailor their shows to the crowd, and they were true.  Having never seen the band before, and seeing a number of cover bands, HeyThere Morgan were entertaining and fun to watch.

Next up, we walked over to the Yellow Cab Company building over on East Fourth Street.  The building hosted ‘The Sideshow Lucky No. 7’.  The festival featured 50 local artists that included paintings, photography, and sculptures.  All the art had the feel of freedom of expression.  The artists who did the work seemed to let the creativity run wild. Truly some of the most mind-blowing artwork I have ever seen.

The band that we saw while at The Sideshow was Dan Raridan & The Calientes.  Having heard about them thru people in and around Dayton for the past couple of months, I was looking forward to seeing what they were going to bring to the show.  While most of the bands were alternative, Raridan and crew brought their own sound to the mix.  The guitars were rich in sound.  The vocals had soul.  So many different variations and influences soared out of the band.  Imagine Blues and Punk unified together.  Raridan &The Calientes did it with ease.  All the talk surrounding the band previously before seeing them was comforting.  The crowd and the band gained an appreciation to one another.  It was a very tranquil moment.

Ape the Ghost

Two bands in the books, we decided to head to the Oregon District to see the action there.  The sun had settled into the sky, and moved over to let the moon have its moment. When we arrived to the Oregon District, we were lucky enough to see Ape the Ghost starting their set at Trolley Stop.

Remember that time when you first heard a song or a band that you just knew it would change your view of music?  That sound coming from the instruments. That hunger for wanting more.  ATG’s soft folk sound, mixed with dreamy lyrics made the large crowd feel that way.  It was delightful to see throughout the set the crowd grew more and more.  People stopped and marveled at what they were being witness to.  If their influences were standing there at that time, smiles from them would go cheek to cheek.  Incredible.  Ape the Ghost’s set will go down as one of the top sets ever in Urban Nights history.  If you miss it, I am truly sorry you did.  If you did see it, I know you feel the same as I do.

Urban Nights provided everyone the sense of pride in the town’s music scene. It also showed everyone just how good we have it here in the Gem City.  We have so many options for music.  Folk, alternative, rock.  Bands that play songs that take you back to the good old days.  All these, and so much more.

Ladies and gentlemen-Urban Nights was a night that I will soon never forget…

Dayton Fashion Week and Urban Nights Presents: Ambush Makeover!!

Dayton Fashion Week will be participating in Urban Nights This Friday

Dayton Fashion Week will be making its Urban Nights Debut this Friday and of course it’s going to be one of the most fashionable events of the evening!  Our sponsors at The Downtown Dayton Partnership have asked the DFW Team to give the patrons of Urban Nights a unique and fun experience– and of course we don’t want to disappoint!!  So with that being said, DFW staff, along with our models, team of makeup artist, hair stylist, and photographers will be out and about at various locations downtown during Urban Nights scouting for individuals to be a part of our first ever Ambush Makeover!

That’s right, the lucky individuals will receive super model treatment during Urban Nights, they will have their hair and makeup done, treated to a professional photo shoot by our amazing photographers, and will receive lessons on how to rip the runway by DFW models right there on the spot!  The individuals selected by our scouts will also be appearing in Dayton Fashion Week’s fashion and lifestyle print magazine which will be debuting in July—just in time for our big event!

The Makeovers will be taking place from 6p-9p at our table located in Court House Square!  Though we are finished holding Casting Calls for this year’s event—I’ve been known to approach random strangers and do some scouting!  So make sure you stop by and say hi because you never know you just may get discovered!
