5 Star Chili

Dayton’s Forgotten Chili Parlor

August 13, 2019 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

5 Star Chili on W. Siebenthaler Ave

Three weeks ago, while driving around West Siebenthaler Ave, we came across a restaurant we had no idea existed.  It was called “5 Star Chili.”  We decided to go in and explore for an impromptu Food Adventure.  The food was great so we went back 2 more times in the following weeks.  It was time to share an article on Dayton Most Metro about this forgotten chili parlor.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on 5 STAR CHILI:

— 5 Star Chili is a family owned business, located at 3257 W Siebenthaler Ave in Northwest Plaza

— The restaurant has been around since 1993, and is known for Cincinnati Style Chili

— Hours are – MON – SAT 11am -4pm, closed on Sundays.

— Menu consists of chili, burgers, dogs, sausages, gyros and fries.  They also sell our favorite, Mikesells Chips and have a full selection of soft drinks in cans.

— Seating is limited to a few tables for four, tightly packed in, or carryout is available.

— The food is served in “to go” containers whether you are eating in or not.

— In a city of Skyline Chili and Gold Star Chili, this is a similar product, but a different taste when it comes to seasonings.  If you like those two restaurants, you will like 5 Star Chili.

Inside 5 Star Chili

Now you know about 5 Star Chili. When you are here, what are the best food items on the menu?

MUST EATS at 5 STAR CHILI:

— 5 WAY CHILI:
Delicious combo of chili, spaghetti, beans, onions and cheese served in a “to go” container.  The flavor of the chili is great.  We suggest adding a drizzle of hot sauce on top to complete the experience.

THE GYRO:

The Gyro from 5 Star Chili

A good gyro, very reminiscent of the ones they serve at Dayton’s Greek Fest, except these onions are cooked.  The tomatoes and tzatziki sauce are buried inside the gyro pita.  Ir is a good, easy to eat option.

— THE CHILI CHEESE CONEY WITH EVERYTHING:
A small hot dog served with chili, onions, mustard and a mound of cheese.  Again, drizzle the top with hot sauce to get the full flavor effect.  One visit we were super hungry and ordered an extra hot dog with just mustard.  Damn was it good..

Cheese Coney with Everything

— THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK:
Maybe the dark horse of the menu.  This sandwich was great.  Shaved steak served with mayo, cheese, onions, green peppers and banana peppers served on a hoagie bun.  Perfect contents to bun ratio, it was delicious.

We have also tried the plain hot dogs with mustard, the bowl of chili by itself and the chili cheese fries.  All were good in a pinch.

It would be nice to see 5 Star Chili get a little love from Dayton public.  While we were in there, sometimes it was busy, sometimes it was quiet.  If you live nearby, or are in the area and you are a Cincinnati Style chili fan, then you have to stop and check this place out.  Dayton’s only, non-chain, stand alone chili parlor, is waiting for you.
