Leave No Trace: Library Scavenger Hunt

Did you know that 80,000 tons of solid waste are produced in the national parks annually? Come learn how to minimize your impact on the outdoors during our Leave No Trace Scavenger Hunt on Thursday, June 26th, at the Franklin Library then use your new knowledge to participate in a library scavenger hunt and a game of trivia! Prizes will be awarded to the winner of both the trivia game and the scavenger hunt and snacks will be provided!

Kettering Restaurant Makes Environmentally Friendly Changes

Disposal serviceware is an ominous issue for the restaurant industry and providing convenient carry-out options while reducing waste is a challenge. Christopher’s Restaurant in Kettering made the switch to compostable straws a few months ago and has recently taken another step toward more sustainable operations by switching to compostable versions of all carry out containers and nearly all disposal amenities in-house. These products are sourced from local distributors such as Bio-Green-Choice and go beyond the designation of biodegradable with a compostable certification.

The ownership said they believe that investing in this ware is important for several reasons. First, many customers have taken up the practice of composting at home and will now have the option of composting disposable items from Christopher’s. These items also present less impact to the natural environment if accidentally introduced. Containers made from plant based materials will decompose quickly compared to plastic, styrofoam and waxed alternatives. Finally, supporting the compostable product industry is important to ensure that our industry moves in this direction, and creates demand and financial feasibility for larger scale composting efforts in the future.

Christopher’s say they will continue to look at all potential options to reduce waste and make changes where possible. They  encourage any other restaurants looking to do the same to contact them for more information.
