FREE Live Music from Jeanne Phillips Trio

May 31, 2026 By Lisa Grigsby

We welcome the Jeanne Phillips Trio back for another memorable visit on Tuesday, June 16th, from 7-10 pm. Let Jeanne’s heartfelt vocals send you into each song’s “story” whether it be smooth, soulful, or energetic. Accompanied by the creative skills of Zachery Karp on the keyboard and Mason Daugherty on the string bass. Leave the day behind and “take a trip” tonight into the world of jazz! They’ll perform alongside our Tuesday night wine specials when wine is 50% off by the glass and 10% off by the bottle!

The trio consists of Jeanne Phillips, Mason Daughtery, and Chris Johnston. Jeanne Phillips is a vocalist and pianist native to Cincinnati. She has a music studio in Cincinnati in the historic Herzog/King Records Music museum on Race Street. She has performed all over this city and many others in the eastern states as a soloist for intimate settings of 7 up to convention crowds of 10,000. While strongly influenced by the stylings of Billie, Ella, Diana Krall, and so many more, Jeanne creates her own unique interpretations that are inspired, inventive, and artistically crafted to create and sustain just the right mood. Jeanne loves to pull her audience into a song’s expression of the heart and varied emotions of the soul.

Mason Daugherty is a jazz bassist, educator, and composer/arranger who, after obtaining his Master’s in Jazz Studies from UC, now calls Cincinnati home. He works professionally in the area in various jazz combos, country bands, and wedding bands while holding the role of Assistant Director for the Cincinnati Jazz Academy. He busies himself composing and arranging for El Ritmo Del Mañana, an occasional chart for CCJO, his own trio, and alongside his band members in DMJ. You can hear his work on “The View from Riddle”, available on Spotify.

Chris Johnston is a Cincinnati-based pianist and organist, known for his lively accompaniment with the JumpNJive Big Band as well as numerous sit-ins with ensembles across the city. A piano graduate of the Toedtman School of Music, he brings both technical skill and stylistic versatility to his playing, spanning jazz, swing, and classical traditions. In addition to performing, Chris is an accomplished antique restorationist with FixMyAntique, specializing in Pianos, Pipe organs, and historic furnishings. His passion for preservation extends to his role as the current caretaker of the historic Wurlitzer Theater organ and Steinway Player piano at Cincinnati Music Hall’s Ballroom, where he ensures that these iconic instruments remain in excellent playing condition for the ongoing concert series and future generations. Blending artistry with stewardship, Chris continues to enrich Cincinnati’s cultural landscape both on stage and behind the scenes.

Please remember, we do not accept reservations. Guests are seated on a first-come, first-serve basis. We request guests dress appropriately, meaning business casual through evening elegance or period-appropriate attire, if you wish (jeans are acceptable but must be well-kempt). We are 25 & up and require a valid ID for entry!

FromOhio Festival Lands in Springfield May 29–30, and Yes, It’s Free!

May 6, 2026 By Dayton937

Remember IndieCraft? It got a glow-up. The festival formerly known as IndieCraft is back this spring under a new name, a new mission, and a lineup that leans hard into its best instinct: that you don’t actually need to fly anyone in to throw a great music festival in this state. FromOhio Music Festival takes over downtown Springfield Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30, with eleven Ohio indie acts, two historic venues, and a weekend of craft beer and local food — all free and open to the public.

The pitch is right there in the name. Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton have quietly been running one of the more interesting regional indie scenes in the country, and FromOhio is built around the idea that a great festival bill doesn’t have to look outward to fill itself out. This year’s lineup is a real cross-section of where the corridor is right now:

  • The Ophelias (Cincinnati) are arriving fresh off Spring Grove, their new Julien Baker–produced LP on Get Better Records
  • Carriers (Cincinnati) — Curt Kiser’s heartland-rock-meets-dream-pop project is touring behind their 2025 LP Every Time I Feel Afraid. Stereogum’s been calling them “dreamy, Dylan-esque” for a reason.
  • M Ross Perkins (Dayton) is a 60s-inspired psych-pop charmer, written up in American Songwriter and Uncut
  • crabswithoutlegs (Dayton / Columbus) is an amazing 12-piece neo-soul-fusion powerhouse and 2023 Dayton Battle of the Bands winners
  • Heather Redman & The Reputation, Mol Sullivan, Visitor, Multi Ultra, Novel Vibrations, Rug, and Jess Lamb rounding out the bill across indie, soul, shoegaze, and rock

Mol Sullivan is one of the performers at this year’s FromOhio Music Festival

Performances split between Mother Stewart’s Brewing (a craft brewery in a beautiful old downtown warehouse) and the historic State Theatre, which are both walkable and genuinely lovely venues to see a band in. More food vendor and brewery partner announcements are rolling out in the weeks ahead, so keep an eye on socials.

Springfield’s about 30 minutes up I-70. Call it a day trip, call it a mini-vacation, call it the easiest free weekend on your spring calendar, but get it on the calendar!

The details:

  • When: Friday, May 29 & Saturday, May 30, 2026
  • Where: Mother Stewart’s Brewing (102 W. Columbia St.) & the State Theatre (19 S. Fountain Ave.), Downtown Springfield
  • Cost: Free and open to the public

PorchFest – 40 Mini-Concerts In One Day

August 21, 2018 By LIbby Ballengee

Play Music on The Porch Day started out as an idea…“What if for one day everything stopped…and we all just listened to the music?”

Even though this seems like a simple idea, if it worked, it could produce profound results. So in 2013 the organizers of the first “Play on a Porch Day” decided to share this idea with the world and to their surprise the idea spread even faster than they could have ever imagined.

In 2017 thousands of musicians from at least 40 countries and over 400 cities – including Dayton for the first time – participated and the movement continues to grow every day. Musicians from across the globe, regardless of their differences, are finding common ground through music.

This year Dayton again participates in this growing international music phenomenon as the now annual event known as Dayton Porchfest, a free, family friendly event for all ages. The festivities take place in the historic St. Anne’s Hill neighborhood, just east of downtown. There you will find over 40 live Dayton musical acts performing on home owner’s porches. Not only do you get to listen to music all afternoon, you get to experience one of Dayton’s most charming neighborhoods!

This event celebrates Dayton’s rich and diverse music scene, with musicians and bands covering funk and blues to indie rock and jazz, classical and country, to bluegrass and old time muisc that has deep Appalachian roots here. This event also celebrates our “Welcome Dayton” spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade.

Dayton Porchfest is organized by The Collaboratory, a non-profit incubator for community enterprises and initiatives, located on Courthouse Square. Proceeds from Porchfest go to benefit The Collaboratory. Tips for the musicians are appreciated!

St Anne’s is home to the Fifth Street Brew Pub, who will be open during the festivities. Four food trucks will also be on site, including: McNasty’s, Courtland’s Mobile Grill, Pa’s Pork, Chi-Dogs, and Gary’s Italian Ice. Be sure to scroll below for map and music schedule.

How to Go?

When: Saturday August 25th from 1:30pm – 7pm aka “International Play on the Porch” Day. See schedule below.

Where: Throughout St. Anne’s Hill Historic District located between 4th and Josie St. Please do not park in the neighborhood. Parking is available at the Liederkranz building, Stivers High School, Becker Electric, RSC Graphics, and Miami Valley Gasket. Signs will be present. See map below.

Cost: Free!

Ages: All ages welcome

Remember to bring: Sunscreen, chair, and umbrella (just in case!)

Vanessa Rubin Performs Free Jazz Concert

March 21, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity, warmth and sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father.

At 7pm on Saturday, March 24th  a short interview will be conducted by Fenton Sparks to help you get to know Vanessa a bit better. The free concert will start at 7:30 pm.

Her career began as a young woman in 1980 singing in small clubs in Cleveland, Ohio performing with musicians such as Wynn Bibbs, Skip Gibson, saxophonist and arranger Willie Smith, Neal Creque, Matthew “Chink” Stevenson.  It did not take her long to make the big trip to New York where she joined up with other jazz musicians like Pharaoh Sanders, Frank Foster and Cecil Bridgewater and Barry Harris. Her first recording contract was with Novus/RCA Records making five albums in three years. “Full Circle” (Creative Perspective Music – 2013) is her most recent recording and is a joint project with saxophonist Don Braden, both of whom are from the Midwest and share a deep appreciation for the Hammond B3.

Vanessa will be performing with an Ohio based trio: Dreve Ivy on piano, Peter Dominguez on bass and Reggie Jackson will to return to the Hayner on drums. In Vanessa’s own words: “I will say they are all fine musicians and wonderful human beings.  Drene is a Cleveland native, an accomplished pianist, accompanist, music instructor and Minister of Music at his place of worship. Peter is the Bass Chair at Oberlin College and is one of the best kept secrets on acoustic bass in the country.  After 30 years in NY and playing with only the best, I am delighted to discover him right here under my nose in Ohio. Reggie, from Columbus, is no stranger to the center as he has played there previously with Bobby Floyd, whom he plays with regularly and has toured extensively with Grammy Winner Dianne Sure.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is proudly supported by the citizens of the Troy City School District through a local tax levy and generous gifts to the Friends of Hayner. For more information regarding these free events and to receive a complete listing of events taking place at the Hayner Center, please call 339-0457 or visit our website at www.TroyHayner.org for complete details
