Collaborative Chef Dinner Benefits Raptors

August 16, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

In what is possibly my favorite culinary event of the year, seven of the Miami Valley’s most talented Chefs join forces to pull off a spectacular six-course meal, under a tent in the middle of nature, at the Glen Helen.

Whoo Cooks for You 2017 will take place on Sunday, Sept, 10th from 4-8pm.

The night starts off with passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails while you tour the Raptor Center, an outdoor education space, filled with birds that are being nursed back to health, and some that are permanent residents due to handicaps or injuries.

And then dinner is called and we hike up the trail a bit to a large tent nestled amongst the trees for an over the top dinner, each course prepared lovingly by one of the area Chefs who has volunteered their time to render the locally sourced ingredients into a delightful dish to serve to the hundred or so guests that attend this annual event. Each chef describes their dish and after a fabulous meal, complimented by an array of Ohio wines and beers.  Coordinator Anne Simonson and her team often share some updates on the raptors being kept at the center.  If you’re really lucky there will be a rehabilitated raptor ready for release that night.  You’ll never be so excited to watch a bird fly away. Oh and this is a fundraiser, so bring some extra bucks for the silent and live auctions!

This event sells out every year so please order your tickets early to ensure your place at the table. For more information, please contact  Ann Simonson or call 937.769.1902.

Celebrate An Active Labor Day Weekend!

September 4, 2015 By Melissa Ledinsky

Guardians of the Glen

Daytonians there are some amazing events coming up this holiday weekend! The festivities include a ‘clean up’ of The Glen Helen Nature Preserve, The Holiday at Home 5K run, last but not least, a wiffle ball and corn hole tournament. Something for everyone this weekend!

Help protect and maintain Glen Helen on Saturday, September 5th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Glen is a 1000 acre nature preserve, located in Yellow Springs. This is a great opportunity to bring the family out to one of the most beautiful preservations in all of southern Ohio. Volunteer some time and spend it outdoors assisting the Glen Helen Ranger with trail maintenance, graffiti removal, litter clean-up and other trail tasks. This is an excellent way to be active and the learn the tricks for keeping the Glen in such pristine condition! All supplies will be provided. Closed-toe, trail appropriate shoes are required, and plastic gloves or work gloves are suggested.  All ages are welcome, however, children under 16 must be accompanied by a guardian. Meet the Glen Helen Ranger at the Trailside Museum to receive your trail assignment, and get ready for some outdoor activity and education!

Mardi Gras comes to Holiday at Home this year in Kettering, and it is truly loaded with a lot of fun activities for the whole family.  The Holiday at Home Festival will include the annual 5K race and kids fun run. The race welcomes all levels of runners and walkers to participate in one of the areas premier road races. Start your morning with a run through the streets of Kettering then take a break with a pancake breakfast and awards ceremony. After the 5K watch the parade and enjoy the festival! The race begins at 8:00 a.m. with registration fees between $15-$25. The sole purpose of Holiday at Home being held over the Labor Day weekend is to provide the city of Kettering and the surrounding communities with a reason to stay at home and stay safe rather than travel out of town over the holiday weekend. Come out and support your community!

After starting youLindenwald Wiffleball & Cornhole Tournamentr day with a 5K mosey your way down to the Lindenwald Wiffle Ball And Corn Hole Tournament on Monday, September 7th. The registration for the tournament is from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with play beginning at 1:00 p.m. The cost is $10 per wiffle ball team and $5 per corn hole team. Extra bonus: it is free for spectators! All proceeds go to Lindenwald Baseball. Lindenwald Baseball is entering its 63rd year and is located in Hamilton, Ohio. The organization provides summer baseball and softball  programs for all boys ages 4 -15 and girls ages 4 -18 who live in Butler County. This is a fabulous way to support youth sporting events, and not to mention have a blast with some friends!

Many different activities to chose from this holiday weekend. Help clean up the Glen, kick off Labor Day with a 5K, and then head to the wiffle ball and corn hole tournament. Sounds like this could quite possibly be the best holiday weekend ever! Let’s get out and get moving Dayton!

Glen Helen Seeking Creative Images For 2016 Wall Calendar!

March 23, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

glenLogoBlockCalling All Photographers!

The diversity of habitats and wildlife in Glen Helen’s nature preserve provides outstanding photo opportunities for photographers at all levels of experience. We invite both first time visitors and long time friends to send us photographs taken in the Glen for a chance to be featured in theirr 2016 Wall Calendar.

They are seeking a variety of images that convey the different moods and seasons of Glen Helen—an iced-over spring, a flower or animal only found at a certain time of year, a lush green meadow on a summer day, a foggy morning sunrise in late fall—images that capture what is special about Glen Helen throughout the year.

Proceeds from the calendar sales are a significant annual fundraiser for Glen Helen, contributing to the continued protection and restoration of the Glen Helen Ecology Institute’s 1000-acre nature preserve and the programs of Glen Helen’s Raptor Center, Outdoor Education Center and Trailside Museum.

Entries, including entry forms, must be submitted online by 5 pm on May 30, 2015.

Photos must be taken of or within the Glen Helen Nature Preserve and depict its natural beauty. The winning images will be judged on aesthetic merit as well as how well they combine with other images to create an attractive calendar.

Contest Guidelines

    • This contest is open to all ages and skill levels. There is no entry fee.glen
    • All submissions must come through our online entry form below, which includes a consent form. Among other things, the Consent form states that the entrant gives the Glen Helen Ecology Institute and Antioch College nonexclusive rights to use the design in perpetuity for no fee.
    • Each entrant may submit an unlimited, yet reasonable, number of their own original images. Please note, only 3 images from any individual photographer may be chosen for the calendar.
    • Photographers whose work is chosen for the calendar are credited and receive a free 2016 calendar.
    • All images submitted must be the submitter’s original work.
    • Electronic images should be saved as .tiff or .jpeg files in the following format:  PhotographerFirstandLastName.PhotoTitle.SeasonTaken.  Photos not saved in the listed format will be rejected without exception.  Please upload photos in the highest resolution available.
    • Tips: Horizontal color shots fit the format of the calendar the best. Images using natural light instead of flash photography are favored. The calendar requires a variety of image styles and subject matter—close-ups of flora or fauna, seasonal or weather related images and lesser-known sights in the Glen are encouraged.
    • All entries must be submitted online by 5 p.m. on May 30, 2015.

You can apply online here.
