Rolled Ice Cream Shop Reopens

Today is the Season Opening for I Heart Ice Cream, Dayton’s first & only Rolled Ice Cream spot, located at 9 N. Williams St. in the Wright-Dunbar District of Dayton. Starting at noon today there will be $5 milkshakes, and all guest can enter to win free ice cream for the month of June!

The Thai inspired ice cream shop, run by Liz Smith began as a vendor at 2nd Street Market and a food truck. The shop offers a rolled ice cream, made by pouring a liquid base onto a super cold surface and then scraping and rolling it into thin, long strands, creating a visually appealing, almost artistic dessert. This method, sometimes called stir-fried ice cream, results in a denser, creamier texture and allows for endless customization with toppings and flavors. Toppings are often added to the base with Oreo, Berries & Cream and Resse’s Peanut Butter Cup among the most popular.

Wright Dunbar Ice Cream Shop Opens Thursday

Celebrate the opening of Dayton’s first rolled ice cream shop this Thursday August 8th at 3pm in Wright Dunbar! Discounted prices on select menu items and an exciting chance to win FREE ice cream for the month of August!

I Heart Ice Cream is Dayton’s first and only rolled ice cream that uses an Asian method of producing ice cream. Their mission is to produce and sell the finest quality rolled ice cream at fair prices with a continued commitment to the freshest ingredients while respecting the earth and environment.

“I Heart Ice Cream was created during the pandemic in 2020, with hopes of bringing food into neighborhoods when social distancing was crucial for safety. Since officially opening for business in May of 2021, the company has expanded into the 2^nd Street Market in downtown Dayton. A storefront will provide a permanent location with more operational hours and special even options for our customers”, said owner Liz Smith.

Food Truck Spotlight: I Heart Ice Cream

Liz & Danny Cortes opened a new mobile ice cream business last week, just in time for a summer of serving up ice cream around the Miami Valley. You’ll see Dayton’s first-ever rolled ice cream truck, e I Heart Ice Cream, all over town this summer.

A Dayton native, Liz shares she comes from a family of entrepreneurs and she has fond memories of her grandmother’s vintage ice truck, which inspired their business choice. This husband and wife team are veterans of the food service business and during the pandemic they decided to make plans to launch their own family business. So they commissioned a 6 x 10 trailer to be built with a 1950’s look to serve a delicious sweet cream liquid based ice cream that is poured onto a frozen pan and then chopped, mixed, spread and rolled right in front of you!

Danny says when they were doing research they had a friend in Thailand that told him about rolled ice cream and they where seeing it in other big cities, so they are excited about being

something new to the food truck scene in the Miami Valley. They pour a fresh cream based sweet vanilla onto a frozen stainless plate, mix it up with ingredients, like oreo’s and chocolate sauce, pressed flat and in a couple of minute it’s pressed out and then rolled into strips of frozen ice cream.

They feature 10 different flavors including vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter, cotton candy, cake batter, strawberry and they even have a vegan option. They have a menu featuring a dozen suggestions,

like the Strawberry & Banana Rolls pictured here– Sweet Cream Vanilla Base + Banana + Strawberry Syrup. Topped with Whipped Cream, Strawberry Drizzle, Strawberry Pocky Stick, Banana & Strawberry Garnish.

Since it’s a true family business, they’ve used their children, Ezra- 5 years old and Inez – 2 year olds as taste testers, a job they are very willing to take on.
