TIFF 2019 – Day #5

September 10, 2019 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello Most Metro!

Today was my fullest day so far.  I’m so glad I had an auxiliary battery for my phone.

MARRIAGE STORY was my first film of the day.  “Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach’s incisive and compassionate portrait of a marriage breaking up, and a family staying together, stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, and co-stars Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  Within the first five minutes of this film, I wrote “It’s incredible” in my notes.  The script is fantastic, the performances are right on, and material is taxingly honest, and the supporting cast are lovely additions to the mix.  At one point, I felt like “this is getting to be too long” (a feeling I’ve had numerous times this year), but then I reconciled it by thinking “getting a divorce is tedious and insufferable – so maybe that’s the point…perhaps it suits the material to be a little too drawn out.  In a very clever marketing strategy, there are actually 2 trailers for MARRIAGE STORY…watch both in one sitting below.

After my first screening, I went to a delightful hour+ event in which Allison Janney was interviewed about her career – along with clips that illustrated some of her cinematic touchstones.  This was a pretty hot ticket, and Allison’s mother Macy was the person who scored the ticket for me.  In the coming days, I believe that TIFF will post this interview on-line, and I’ll make sure to share the link with you if I find it.  Allison is funny, smart, gracious and a great storyteller – it was a delight to hear some of her personal history.

After listening to Allison, I got to see her new film – BAD EDUCATION.  “Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, and Ray Romano star in this fact-based dramedy directed by Cory Finley (Thoroughbreds), about an infamous school-larceny scandal that rocked Long Island in the early aughts.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  This film is pretty terrific (though I questioned some of the motivation for the queer content)!  The story’s upsetting subject matter is handled in such an interesting fashion and Jackman’s performance is unlike any I’ve seen him give before.  Janney is also in top form, and I think this film will get snatched up in no time.  Below is the image being used with this film…there is no trailer yet.

THE TRUTH – with two leading ladies I adore – was next on my list. “Acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s (Shoplifters, Like Father, Like Son) first film made outside his native Japan stars Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche as a mother and daughter in the film industry whose professional collaboration triggers long-buried resentments.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  My “review” of this film might be a little unfair because I was a bit tired when I walked into this screening.  The first half hour was pretty wonderful, but then my eyes got very heavy and I fought to stay awake.  Ultimately, I kept feeling like I wanted the pace to pick up – but maybe that was just my exhaustion speaking…or maybe it was a little too slow.  At the end of the day, I think it’s a nice film…but it won’t get the roll-out that SHOPLIFTERS did for this director.

TWO POPES was my last film of the day.  Fernando Meirelles and Jonathan Pryce and others from the team introduced the film, and Meirelles said that the reason he likes Pope Francis so much is because he wants to build bridges when so many leaders want to build walls.  Of course that deservedly got a huge round of applause. “In 2013, progressive incoming Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce) and conservative outgoing Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins) debate the best path forward for the Catholic Church, in this surprisingly funny chamber piece from Oscar-nominated director Fernando Meirelles (City of God).” (taken from TIFF catalog)  That description kinda sums up the film…but not really.  It’s not just a chamber piece, it’s a pretty big, fully realized film with two incredible central performances.  I’m not a Catholic, thus I can never understand the ways of the church, but I’ve always felt like the regality surrounding the papacy seems to contradict some of the church’s messaging…and it appears that Pope Francis holds a similar sentiment.  This film made me appreciate him more. Through flashbacks and archival footage, we get a much bigger picture than just two Popes chatting.  Though the film loses a little steam in its third act, I think audiences will nonetheless adore it.  I hope Netflix does a theatrical release – more than just a couple cinemas. (I personally know many people who don’t subscribe to Netflix who would love to see this movie.)

It’s time to call it a night. Four more films are on the docket for tomorrow.

Thanks for checking in!

Jonathan

IDA & WORDS AND PICTURES Open Friday at THE NEON!

July 23, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal

MCDIDAA EC018Hello Everyone,

If you still need to see LIFE ITSELF, THIRD PERSON or CHEF (which has been here 9 weeks!), you’ll need to hurry. Thursday will be your last chance to catch any of these films at THE NEON. On Friday, we’re clearing the decks for two new films – the critically acclaimed and powerful new film IDA and the romantic drama WORDS AND PICTURES. (For this week’s remaining showtimes, visit our website at www.neonmovies.com)

Synopsis for IDA: At last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, I saw 30+ films. This film was at the top of my list (with films like 12 YEARS A SLAVE and PHILOMENA), but it won’t stick around for too long. I hope you’ll hurry down. “From acclaimed director Pawel Pawlikowski comes IDA, a moving and intimate drama about a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland who, on the verge of taking her vows, discovers a dark family secret dating from the terrible years of the Nazi occupation. 18-year old Anna, a sheltered orphan raised in a convent, is preparing to become a nun when the Mother Superior insists she first visit her sole living relative. Naive, innocent Anna soon finds herself in the presence of her aunt Wanda, a worldly and cynical Communist Party insider, who shocks her with the declaration that her real name is Ida… In this beautifully directed film, Pawlikowski returns to his native Poland for the first time in his career to confront some of the more contentious issues in the history of his birthplace. Powerfully written and eloquently shot, IDA is a masterly evocation of a time, a dilemma, and a defining historical moment; IDA is also personal, intimate, and human. The weight of history is everywhere, but the scale falls within the scope of a young woman learning about the secrets of her own past.” (taken from Music Box Films press notes) Click on this LINK to visit the official website.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXhCaVqB0x0

Synopsis for WORDS AND PICTURES: “A witty romantic drama, WORDS AND PICTURES stars the engaging duo of Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen working together on-screen for the first time. Prep school English teacher Jack Marcus laments his students’ obsession with social media and good grades rather than engaging with the power of the written word. A one-time literary star, Jack has not published in years filling his spare time with drink versus the art of language. He meets his match in Dina Delsanto – an abstract painter and new teacher on campus, who was once celebrated for her art. From the start, the two flirt and provoke each other with equal relish.” (taken from Roadside Attractions press notes) Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official website.

On Tuesday, July 29 at 7:30, The Evangelical Immigration Table will host a one-time screening of the documentary THE STRANGER. “This film was produced to motivate evangelical Christians to take a stand for immigration reform. The film tells the story of three families caught in our broken immigration system. The film is a stark reminder that immigration isn’t just a political issue, and it certainly isn’t a liberal or conservative issue. It is an American issue, and it is a spiritual issue. Tickets are $5 (Now Available at THE NEON’s Box Office) and all proceeds will go to local refugees served by New Path Outreach, a ministry of Ginghamsburg Church. Watch the film. Then call your Congressman.” (taken from press notes) A panel discussion will be held after the screening.

On Thursday, July 31 at 7:30, 4 Paws For Ability will screen LEGENDS OF THE KNIGHT. This tugg screening has crossed its required threshold, but more tickets are still available…with a portion of the proceeds going to the group that provides service dogs to children in need. “LEGENDS OF THE KNIGHT weaves together the uplifting true stories of individuals who have overcome devastating obstacles, unselfishly given to the community, and embraced their inner superhero because of their love of Batman.” Follow this LINK to find out more about the film, watch a trailer and reserve your ticket.

On Sunday, August 3 at 1:00, SPAN Ohio will hold a one-time screening of THE HEALTHCARE MOVIE. “Single Payer Action Network Ohio (SPAN Ohio) is proud to host THE HEALTHCARE MOVIE on the 49th anniversary of our own Medicare system. THE HEALTHCARE MOVIE is a 65 minute documentary that reveals the intensity of the political struggle that led to Canada’s universal medical care system, and exposes public relations campaigns that have been prevalent in the U.S. since the early 1900’s to dissuade the American public from supporting national health care. Every day people are dying or going bankrupt due to the ills of the United States system. Who are we in the face of this human tragedy? If you agree that people are more important than profits, then you must see this film. Admission is free and open to the public.” (taken from SPAN Ohio press notes)

“On Thursday, August 14 at 7:30 Boston Stoker is proud to present A FILM ABOUT COFFEE to the Dayton Area. The film, which first premiered in Seattle at the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), explores the world’s involvement and fascination with specialty coffee from crop to cup. It captures in-depth views on the current state of specialty coffee with footage from throughout the US, Africa, South America and Japan. Boston Stoker is a specialty coffee roaster and wholesaler that has operated out of Dayton, Ohio since 1973. The company has a long history with direct trade work within the coffee industry, focusing on Heart to Honduras.” (taken from Boston Stoker press notes) This screening will be an Ohio premiere! Click this LINK to find out more about the film. Click this LINK to visit Boston Stoker’s official site.

Save the Date! On Saturday, August 30 at noon, Roosevelt Class of ’67 is planning a fundraiser with a screening of BUCK AND THE PREACHER. More details will be in next week’s newsletter.

I’m delighted to announce that our opening date for BOYHOOD has been moved up! It will now open on August 1, and we can’t wait!

Thanks so much for your continued support!

We hope to see you soon!
Jonathan

Toronto – THE FILMS – Day #6

September 14, 2011 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

If you need showtimes for the upcoming weekend at THE NEON, please visit the official site at www.neonmovies.com.

Well…it was a mixed bag again today.

First off, I saw ELLES – a new, sexually charged film starring Juliette Binoche.  The movie is about a woman who is quite busy being a housewife…but is also a journalist.  For her latest story, she is interviewing 2 young ladies who have become prostitutes in order to put themselves through college.  While writing the story, she revisits her interviews and begins to question her marriage, her position and her own sexuality.  If you’re thinking BELLE DU JOUR (with Deneuve), so was I.  Though not as strong or provocative, I do like that it makes us think about how we perceive women.  The photography is good, and  Binoche is always a treat to watch.  There is no clip or trailer available, so all you get is the photo above.

Next I saw a film I’ve been dying to see.  The new film directed by Madonna – W.E. The movie concerns 2 stories – The relationship of Wallis Simpson and King Edward…and a contemporary story about a woman who is obsessed with the early 20th century romance.  (Though Madonna was in town for the premiere yesterday, she did not attend this 2nd screening.)  I went into the screening with a negative vibe.  I was prepared to be disappointed – as early criticism from Venice was mostly negative.  Then the movie started.  Though there were some visual choices that I didn’t care for, I was ready to stand up again the naysayers!  Andrea Riseborough – who plays Wallis Simpson – is absolutely spectacular.  The costumes are fantastic, the sets are divine.  Though camera work was a little unsettling, I was entirely engaged…for the first hour.  Then begin some moments that are simply inexcusable.  It’s really too bad…there’s a good film here, it just needs to be cut.  I’d be more than willing to offer my services.  This film needs 3 scenes cut…and overall about 20 minutes taken out…and it would be at the very least, a good film.  Below are a couple images of Riseborough and a scene from the film.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msii9-OyZ3I’]

Lastly, I saw the latest film from Whit Stillman – who hasn’t made a film in more than a decade.  DAMSELS IN DISTRESS is CLUELESS for the college set.  I thought it was a scream.  Stillman, lead actress Greta Gerwig (who you might remember as the best part of GREENBERG), Adam Brody, and a couple other damsels were at the screening.  It’s the funniest movie I’ve seen at this year’s festival, and I think it will certainly develop a following.  Below is a clip – but by no means the funniest part of the film.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF2InbftsPo’]

4 Films tomorrow…need to be up by 6:00 one last time.  Thus off to bed.

Cheers,

Jonathan
