Century bar has started construction on Kette’s Kandies. The Century’s new 1920’s inspired speakeasy cocktail bar.
From 1909-1913 the building at 10 South Jefferson Street was home to the Kette and Sons Whiskey Company. But during the flood of 1913, their building was destroyed by fire. Afterwards, Kette, seeing prohibition looming, exited the whiskey trade and opened a candy store. “That inspired the name and store front for our new speakeasy lounge”, said Century’s Joe Head. “It’s a great story and we want people to experience the rich heritage Dayton had during that place and period in time.”
To help kick off the project, Century Bar and Warped Wing Brewing Company have collaborated on another barrel-aged beer. “The Kette’s made and sold rye whiskey, so we decided to use rye whiskey barrels as our aging vehicle”, said Head. “And because my favorite style of beer is Porter, we worked together with Warped Wing’s Brewmaster John Haggerty to develop the beer. “The beer is coal black in color with aromas of cocoa, vanilla and bourbon and notes of dark roasted malt, bourbon and hints of wood with tannins from the barrel”, says John Haggerty. “We’re calling it Kette’s Pride. The name is a tip of the hat to Kette who was and will be remembered as a Dayton icon”, according to Nick Bowman, VP of Sales & Marketing for Warped Wing. Kette’s is 8% ABV.
This very limited draft only release will be available at Century Bar next Wednesday, November 8th. The Century will host a toast event at 5pm to celebrate the kick-off of construction at Kette’s Kandies. It will also be available in the Warped Wing taproom.
