15th Annual Free Fair Celebrating Life and Health

March 12, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

It’s time again! Time to invite you and your family to attend “Celebrating Life and Health” – a FREE health fair and luncheon taking place on Saturday, April 1st, at Sinclair Community College!

Hosted by the Levin Family Foundation, this is the 15t h year of “Celebrating Life and Health” and the perfect opportunity to reduce the stress of healthcare costs for area residents, and provide the community with preventative testing and healthcare education – all at no charge.

This year’s annual health fair consists of over 50 area agencies who will be providing health services, education, and screenings for various topics and conditions such as Cancers, Cholesterol, Diabetes, Vision, HIV, Depression, Anxiety, Osteoporosis, Blood Pressure, Mammograms, and much more. Pre-re gistration is only needed for Mammograms. All services are FREE, and tickets are only required for Free RTA bus rides to and from the Ponitz Center.

Why “Celebrating Life and Health?” Because everyone’s health is important! Levin Family Foundation realized the local need 15 years ago and put this program into action with the help of local health and education facilities – plus a tremendous volunteer base.

Sinclair Dental students help with screenings

With basic healthcare getting harder to obtain, compounded with the added financial hardship of rising medical costs, “Celebrating Life and Health” brings organizations together to make a positive impact on the wellbeing of people in our community.

Please join the volunteers and caregivers for the 2017 “Celebrating Life and Health” fair and luncheon to be held Saturday, April 1s t , from 10am to 3pm at Sinclair Community College Ponitz Center (Building 12), at 444 W Third St.

The health fair and luncheon event is being offered to the entire community – regardless of your employment, insurance, or ability to visit the doctor’s office – you and your family are invited to attend. All are welcome!

For more information on the program, pre-register for a Mammogram, to order your Free RTA tickets, or to help volunteer yourself or your group, please call: 937-223-5433 or visit: www .celebratinglifeandhealth.org Thank you!

Celebrating Karen Levin On Her Birthday!

December 30, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

levinka04Karen Levin is a native Daytonian, serving as executive director, trustee, and secretary of the Levin Family Foundation. The not-for-profit philanthropic organization grants about $1 million annually to Montgomery County organizations that focus on the hungry, the homeless, the medically underserved as well as women and children at risk.  While health issues are a focus, the Levin Family Foundation also supports organizations as varied as Habitat for Humanity, The Human Race Theater, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, the Dayton Art Institute, SICSA, and more.

Karen was appointed to the Executive Director’s position on January 1st, 2001.

Prior to her appointment, she worked in Biomedical Research at Wright State University and served as a physician assistant working in family practice and geriatrics. In 2008 she completed her Masters degree in Public Health from Wright State University.

Karen serves on the board of directors of:

  • South Community Inc.
  • Homeless Solutions
  • Prevent Blindness (State of Ohio board)

Her favorite projects involve programs that deal with the medically underserved and children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Celebrating Life and Health is one of the main programs she works on throughout the year because she believes that it is morally wrong not to provide preventative health care testing to all segments of the population.

measles campaign

Her trip to Madagascar and participation in the American Red Cross Measles Campaign in September and October 2004 was a life changing experience. She discovered that sometimes you have to go halfway around the world and experience true deprivation and hardship to uncover who you really are. She hopes to volunteer for more medical missions in the future.

Karen can frequently be seen on the bike paths riding her silver recumbent bicycle. She also works quite a bit in the fiber arts. Her specialties are knitting and weaving. The creed she lives by:

“Never believe your own PR!”

FILMDAYTON ANNOUNCES 2013 FILMDAYTON AWARD WINNERS

August 7, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

xyublegiva1rlgct4da93er6bgscn32a  The FilmDayton Festival is back for the 5th year with submissions of shorts from around the world, great features you wouldn’t see elsewhere, valuable workshops for professionals or those looking for a behind the scenes view, and the  popular Pitch-It contest where you can share your movie plot idea for a chance at cash and prizes. The Festival, headquartered at The Neon, will take place on  Fri, Aug 23- Sun, Aug 25.

For the second year as part of the festival, FilmDayton honors talented Miami Valley residents who choose to offer their skills, creativity, innovation and support to the local community. This year’s honorees receiving FilmDayton Awards include:

Jud Yalkut – The Innovation Award – an award for a lifetime of innovation and creativity in filmmaking

A resident of the Dayton area since 1973, Yalkut was Assistant Professor of Art at Wright State University (where he yalkut_jud_600x480_01152013-1founded the film and video area of the Art Department), and taught at Sinclair Community College in Dayton and at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Jud started making video art in the 1960’s and collaborated with Nam Jun Paik on a series of groundbreaking video-film pieces. His work has influenced a number of other video artists and his innovative style broke boundaries between artist and spectator, inside and outside, reality and fantasy.

Jud’s film and video work has been exhibited at such venues as the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Miami University Art Museum, and Anthology Film Archives in New York, the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan. (Award given posthumously)

Andy Copp – The Filmmaker Award – a career award for excellence in filmmaking

original

A native of Dayton, Andy’s first feature film, The Mutilation Man (1998) was a gritty, blood-soaked, fever dream set ina bleak, post-apocalyptic near-future. Shot on a mix of film and video, The Mutilation Man paid homage to his filmmaking heroes while presenting his own unique and personal vision. Andy was a fiercely independent filmmaker, as well as an emerging artist and innovative filmmaker.

As an educator and mentor, Andy also made an impact on the Miami Valley’s film community. He taught classes in film history and theory at Sinclair Community College, and presented workshops in various aspects of video production at the Miami Valley Cable Council, KIT-TV in Tipp City, DATV and FilmDayton. Andy teamed up with Rick Martin and horror host Dr. Creep to create Horrorama, an annual horror film marathon, which has raised thousands of dollars for charity since 1997. (Award given posthumously)

Levin Family Foundation –The Key Award- an award for special service to the regional film communitybanner-logo

The Levins have supported filmmaking in the Dayton region for decades. Sam Levin’s movie theatre empire consisted of 17 theaters in the Dayton region. In 1964, Sam was driven to improve the quality of movies showing at his theatres and wrote the feature film Girls on the Beach which features major musicians of the day and is still a cult hit today.

Recently, the Levin Family Foundation became involved with film through their generous underwriting of Take Us Home, a documentary depicting the challenges faced by Ethiopian Jews on exodus to Israel.

How to Go:

The public is invited to the 2013 Eichelberger FilmDayton Awards, Sunday August 25 @ 8PM at the Neon Movies.  Tickets are $9 and can be purchased at www.filmdayton.com.
